DCtober Prompts 1&2
Heroic
Friendship
Jayn is based in Gotham City, one of the only cities in the world where cosplay is banned. Even if I’m not RPing a ship w/him, Jayn’s best friend in the DC Universe is almost always going to be Jason Todd.
Rose definitely looks up to Zatanna, John Constantine, and Doctor Fate, but her favorite superheroes are the Green Lantern Corps (at least, in terms of how cool their powers are; their rules sometimes annoy her). She had to leave all her friends behind when she lost her parents & John took her to the Tower of Fate to be mentored/protected.

the boys OC: Jayn Loren
Legal Name: [previously] Janice "Jayn" Katherine Loren; [alias] Safina Peterson
Masked ID: Frostbite (status - secret)
Date of Birth: Aug. 10, 1995 (age 28 as of 2023)
Appearance (FC - Tessa Thompson)
Jayn is a biracial (Afro-Latina & White) female who stands at 5'4” (1.63 m). Visually, she takes after her mother in most ways, having brown skin, dark eyes, dark hair, and a slight pear shape. Like her father, her shoulder-length hair is naturally straight, but it's common for her to curl it so it's more like her mom's. She exercises regularly, even more than most people her age, which has resulted in a toned figure. Her muscular definition tends to appear whenever she's stretching. She wears this in her pursuit of crime.
Powers/Abilities:
In addition to the typical Supe physiology (possessing superhuman-level strength, speed, agility, and durability), Jayn has the versatile power of hydrokinesis. Her degree of control is so great that she can turn water vapor into ice instantly, manipulate her surroundings to travel quickly underwater, create thick clouds of fog to confuse targets, temporarily "harden" the water she controls to physically assault enemies, and/or affect a person by telepathically seizing their blood. However, unlike The Deep (who she unfortunately gets compared to often), she cannot naturally breathe underwater or communicate with sea creatures.
Skills:
To aid in her crimefighting, Jayn has taken the time to learn and practice the following: judo, kickboxing, freediving (max: 20 min & 40'/12.2 m without using her powers), lockpicking (using tools & water vapor), American Sign Language, French, Russian, and Korean, basic gymnastics/acrobatics, and knife throwing. She is an Olympic-level swimmer.
History:
She was born to Dahlia Loren, a scientist who had once worked for Vought, and Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who secretly operated as the Supe hero Batman. Because Bruce had discovered the truth about Compound V and was preparing to release the information to various news stations worldwide, Vought responded by threatening Dahlia's life and Bruce's company (which, up until then, they allowed to succeed in the tech industry since they weren't competitors in the same space). Bruce agreed to fake his death and ultimately stay quiet. He was unaware that Dahlia, when approached, had agreed to inject their unborn daughter with V to keep Bruce and her parents safe. Jayn was special to Vought because she was 1 of the few examples of a child who would both inherit and be injected with V, not to mention that Black Noir was her mother's older brother. Vought secretly monitored the Lorens until Jayn revealed her powers at the age of 13, when she defended herself from a bully. They separated her and her mother, sending her to Red River Institute while they forced her mother to work for them again. They told Jayn that her mom had died violently resisting. Jayn initially was angry and rebellious, but after several "punishments", she learned to be obedient. Before she turned 14, her father paid someone off to sneak her out using a laundry cart. He helped get her a new identity ("Safina Peterson") and train so she could become a vigilante and try to take down Vought.
Extra:
She learned English and Spanish pretty much at the same time since those were her mom's mother tongues. Through reading, Jayn learned some Greek and Latin root words.
Black Noir doesn't know about her, and neither she nor her mom knows about the abuse he suffered at the hands of Soldier Boy. As far as the Lorens know, he just got too busy and stopped answering their calls. Vought told him to cut ties with them once he got out of the hospital following his disfigurement.
Jayn was born in California, but she ended up being raised in New Jersey, her father's home, once he took her in.
The first time she killed someone was when Vought's men separated her from her mom. She just lashed out and accidentally imploded some of them.
"Safina Peterson" works at WayneTech, the company that would have legally been owned by her father, as a business analyst with a few good recommendations and an MA from Ramon Llull University in business. Jayn never went to college because her father deemed it to be too risky. So he taught and quizzed her until she was 19, then arranged for her to train. His Supe ability is a genius-level intellect, so she had a pretty decent education.

I Loved You Then, I Love You Still (1/2)
Jason Todd did not like Jayn. And she was fine with that.
Jayn arrived at Wayne Manor with red-rimmed eyes. Despite her having flown from California to New Jersey, she had no luggage. She had nothing except the clothes on her back and a sealed letter that was addressed to Bruce. Alfred coaxed her out of the town car, and she was trembling, exhausted emotionally. He led her through what looked like a damn museum and she passed out as soon as she was given a bed to sleep in. When she woke up (still fully dressed), she used the bathroom and then went downstairs, following the smell of food. She hadn't realized that her mother's letter was gone until she saw it in Bruce Wayne's hand.
The letter was written to her, which she hadn't expected. But thirteen year-olds don't expect to telekinetically hurl water at a bully, or to be driven to the airport instead of straight home after school, or to watch their mother be escorted off of a plane and into a car while they're already seated. In the letter, her mommy apologized for lying. Her mommy told her that her father was Bruce Wayne, who used to be her boss and boyfriend thirteen years before. Her mommy explained how Jayn was a metahuman, and that the people who wanted the superhuman serum inside of her took her away. Jayn didn't react to the part that said her new father was Batman, because she was busy sobbing. It was too much. The boy her age, who sat at the dinner table, had an unreadable expression. Her father hugged her, but she wouldn't hug back.
He/Bruce/her father made sure she had lots of clothes in her size. Alfred helped her pick them out, because Bruce was busy working. It all seemed fake. She didn't want lots of clothes, or a bedroom in a mansion, or a new parent. She wanted her old clothes, and her room with the sunset that her mom's friend had painted, and her mother. Jayn went from sad to angry very quickly. Wherever she went, the room was cold. She hardly spoke to anyone.
And then Jason called her a bitch. In Spanish, her Mommy's language. Her FIRST language. Long story short, her punishment was to join Jason in the exercises he did as part of his Robin training. His punishment was just being there with her, apparently. But at least he got to be a hero. At least he got to have fun at school. Bruce wanted her homeschooled, so that the people who took her mom didn't find her.
Things changed when Jason broke his hand on patrol. Jayn told herself that she didn't feel bad for him. He was always gloating about beating her in the weightlifting and running drills, even though he was the one who had months of being Robin as an advantage. And with a broken hand, he was exempt from half of the exercises as it was. But one day, she was walking by the library and found him, struggling to push the rolling ladder. Bruce had told her and Jason that they weren't supposed to climb it by themselves, because they could easily get hurt (even with training, she was only 5'1" and Jason was shorter than her).
"Bruce told us not to do that," she muttered, stopping just because she'd rather lag behind than go start on her French homework.
"Fuck off." Jason actually cursed more than she did, but they both had to hide it from the adults of the house.
"Fine." She was going to leave until she saw how dangerous it would be for him, climbing with one hand--especially if he planned on carrying more than one book on his way down. "Ugh. Move and guard the hall." He hesitated for a moment, then did as she told him. "What book did you want?"
"Hamlet." Jayn grabbed the thing, along with a book that happened to catch her eye, and quickly scurried back down to earth, not wanting to be banned from any more of Alfred's baking (it was the worst punishment you could get, aside from having to run extra laps).
"Why didn't you just look it up and read it?"
Jason scoffed, but there was a little less venom in that than usual. He actually looked...embarrassed? "...GA's doing it for the winter play."
"Who are you trying out for?"
"Hamlet. Or Horatio."
"That's his best friend, right?" Jayn wasn't a big fan of Shakespeare, but she wasn't uncultured, either. Jason nodded. He walked off toward the hall, then stopped.
"What book did you get?"
"Sherlock Holmes. An anthology." His eyes brightened, even though he tried to look bored. "You can read it next week, when I'm done."
So they first bonded over their love of books and plays. He was mostly into nineteenth-century classics, like Jane Eyre, while she preferred modern fiction, but they found some titles that they liked to talk about together. She helped him prepare for his audition, and helped Alfred make Jason's favorite cookies so they were ready after school (despite Jason losing the role of Hamlet, he got Horatio). He showed her how to pick locks and do basic mechanical work, so she coached him in swimming and in Spanish (he also helped her learn French and his Italian).
The first time Jayn hugged Jason was when he (with Alfred's help) convinced Bruce to let her patrol with them, as Kestrel.
The first time she thought he was cute was when she'd had a terrifying nightmare after a breakout at Arkham and he'd stayed with her until she fell asleep (yes, he was still there in the morning, bedhead and all).
The first time she realized she was in love with him was when he got a girlfriend (they lasted exactly 41 days). Jayn may have created a thunderstorm the night of their first date.
They didn't have anyone they wanted to ask to prom (at least, that's what they told Bruce), so they figured they'd go together. They even chose to match, his tie to her dress.
Jason Todd was killed seventeen days before Gotham Academy's prom. Jayn didn't go to prom. She didn't go to the funeral. She didn't go to Oxford, which both she and her best friend had gotten accepted to. To all outward appearances, she just disappeared.

older!Jason Todd feelings
apparently I’m having thoughts about my guy today. Who can blame me? 🥰 here's a thing about him & my OC, Jayn, when they're a little bit older...
to start, his FC is Peter Gadiot. (yep, let that sink in.)
ANYWAY--
he's 50-something. when he really thinks about it, he's surprised that he's made it this far. Like all the other vigilantes & Gotham-centric people (including his own partner), he's got his own collection of scars (& foraged Batarangs), but that's to be expected. The usual suspects (Jayn, the old ladies in their* neighborhood, the Bats who were still kicking, and the nighttime escorts) always compliment him on his looks, even if he doesn't think he looks all that special. The Pit has slowed his aging; aside from some deepened smile crinkles at the corner of his eyes and slightly darker skin, he hasn't physically changed in decades. Ah well--there is the bone spur that future asshole!Tim had clued him into (long since removed), the scruff he occasionally lets grow in, and the blue that's slowly returning to his eyes in place of some of the Lazarus-tinted green. He still has the nightmares, and some things (prolonged laughter, horror movies, being surrounded by intense cold) still bother him, but Harley's really helped over the years.
he and Jayn said they'd never get married. They agreed when they were maybe 27 that having an actual wedding would just jinx things. If either of them died too early, the other would resurrect them, and yet...they both preferred to stay on top uninterrupted for a while. So, they had a date night (and day) spent mostly outside Gotham, one which ended with them getting tattoos inspired by Pride and Prejudice: “My heart is and always will be yours,” for her, and "You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you,” for him. Well, that, and then they put their gelato to-go in the fridge before they had a nice round of sleepy sex. Now they've got matching ring tattoos--those were from their 25th not-anniversary last year.
she eventually sets aside her duties as CFO of WayneTech to run the Martha Wayne Foundation. It keeps her busy in a good way. She and Jason publicly live in the Wayne Foundation penthouse, which is close to all the venues used for charity galas and not far from all the places where Jason teaches. Because he wants to help as many as he can, he rotates between being an adjunct at Gotham U, an adjunct at Hudson, a teacher at a big high school (it'd been poor before "the Waynes" donated to it), and an online tutor...all for English and Drama. Jayn limited him to 2 jobs per semester and forbade him from working at Gotham and Hudson simultaneously. Still, she loves listening to his stories about the kids he works with. And they love their teacher, who wears graphic tees and ankle boots with button-ups, and who sometimes brings his pet to class.
the Red Hood isn't seen as often as the other Gotham heroes. Some of them are younger, newer vigilantes who find it comparably easy to fit nightly patrols into their schedules. Sometimes he envies them, missing the feeling of wind combing through his hair as he zips through the sky, or the combination of adrenaline, satisfaction, and relief that comes with saving someone from a creep. Well, he still experiences that stuff, just not as much. First off, the Red Hood is a reserve guy--he only comes out when Frostbite does, which is if shit has officially hit the fan (ex. planetary invasion, No Man's Land Part 2, the regular teams are out of commission, etc.). Then out come the pistols and gear, none of which he's ever thrown away (assuming it still works). Otherwise, he has to stick to riding his motorcycle, sparring with those who know about his past, and going on the occasional international vacation.
they stopped suiting up for patrol a few months before the twins were born. The kids were the result of a few steamy, excited, condom-less nights (some of which also involved getting high). When Jayn got the positive, she and Jason debated all the reasons why they should or shouldn't be parents, including having weird upbringings, living in a dangerous world, and noticing a little gap in their lives that seemed to want kids. Freddie Arwen and Lydia Wayne-Todd looked nothing like each other apart from their light brown skin, but Jason thought his daughters were perfect the moment he saw them. They still are, even though Freddie keeps bleaching the life out of her pretty, dark brown hair and Lydia's cooking typically tastes like stale refried beans. Both left Gotham years ago, but they make sure to visit once a month.
yes, the clown is dead. Yes, Jason was there when they dissolved the body using lye and water. Yes, he was slightly salty, seeing as how it'd taken the Bats forever to kill the creep. In the end, it'd been Ghost-Maker, Bruce's weird (yet impressive, from a crimefighting POV) ex, who'd been in Gotham tracking some illegal shipment. Apparently, Khoa had been a good boy, following Bruce's rules until he completed his mission. About a half hour later, Joker was found dead. There was an informal, 2-day celebration all across the city, one where everyone was kind to each other, like a reverse Purge. It would become a holiday, much to Bruce's chagrin. Oh, well.
when Jason turned 30, Alfred finally admitted to the Bats that he'd been part of some experimental Brit super-soldier program, one that had slightly increased his intellect, reflexes, and lifespan. Not many of them were surprised.

I Loved You Then, I Love You Still (2/2)
Valentine's Day had become one of Jayn's favorite holidays as an adult. Sex was an excellent part of it (not like she ever waited til February to fuck), but it was nice having friends and close family to share the day with, too. And she had Jason.
They'd started the day nice and early, with their "as long as we're not sick or injured" tradition: right at midnight, they jumped each other's bones. It was nice, waking up later that morning all naked and cuddly. She loved seeing his hair all overfluffed, and seeing him with a peaceful smile when she gently moved his signature white tuft out of his eyes. "Hey."
"Hey." They fooled around under the sheets, then a little more when they got into the shower. Jason cooked breakfast as usual, which the couple ate together before Jayn went off to work. Working on Valentine's Day wasn't her ideal situation, but it wasn't out of the ordinary, either. She continued to be in a good mood, spending most of the morning having coffee-sponsored conversations with Tim. He and she shared an open-concept office, which was basically one floor with just their two desk spaces a few yards apart (plus The Couch for Sleeping, a few art pieces, and Tim's $16000 coffee machine). As they worked on their laptops, they chatted about their bigoted board members, unique investors, and beloved R&D initiatives, sharing both groans and laughter. Then, hours and hours later, Jayn was done for the day.
She picked Jason up, and they drove over to Wayne Manor. Usually, the visit didn't last long, since they only went there to drop off some holiday cards and hug the members of their family who lived there. Alfred always checked the two of them for poorly-dressed wounds before handing them a Tupperware of leftovers and a reminder to come back for Sunday family dinner. But Jayn had another reason to visit. While Jason was in the kitchen with Alfred and Bruce, she went up to her old bedroom, making a beeline for the closet.
When Bats moved out of the Manor, their rooms were left untouched, mostly in the event that they had to sleep in there again for some reason. She ignored her high school-era posters and dug through all the stuff that hid Jason's gift. It was just the thing to mark their five-year anniversary (of dating)...an annotated copy of Hamlet. In fact, it was the exact same copy they'd used to help Jason train before he had his audition when they were teenagers. Jayn had reread and put comments in the margins, the same way her boyfriend did when he read novels. She'd put hers in a small gift bag that was stuffed with wrapping paper.
Anyway, that's what she was pulling out when something soft and cool brushed her neck. Jayn straightened up, bag in hand, to see what had come into contact with her skin, and froze.
It was the dress she'd never worn. The one she'd bought for prom. She hadn't bothered having a quinceanera, because her mother couldn't be there. A prom was gonna be her big, perfect dance, and she was going with Jason...even if they were just going as friends.
He ended up finding her curled up on the bed, hugging the gift bag to her chest. And then he wordlessly served as her big spoon. It wasn't like he'd gotten to go to prom, either.

secret sky high OC: Jayn's verse
Jayn Loren is a senior. At this point, students are no longer sorted into Hero and Sidekick (though she was placed into the Hero category), but by aptitude. She’s a skilled hydrokinetic who takes self-defense outside of school. Her small group of friends have never been to her house, because her father is the enigmatic Batman–the only nocturnal hero who is secretly billionaire Bruce Wayne.

DC Comics OC form (Jayn Loren-Wayne)
Full Name: Janice “Jayn” Katherine Loren-Wayne
Age: 28 as of Jan. 2023 (born Aug. 10, 1995)
Gender/Sex: cis (born female)
Sexuality: Bisexual (openly)
Ethnicity: Afro-Latina (Dominican, Mexican & Guyanese descent) & White (Jewish on her paternal grandmother's side) American
Speaks: English (East US), Spanish (Mexican), French (European); can understand American Sign Language & Russian
Appearance: Jayn is a 5'4” (1.63 m) young woman who engages in regular intense physical activity. She’s toned and has light brown skin with a warm undertone. Her black hair, which is naturally straight like her father's, is usually worn in a simple style that goes just past her chin. She styles it differently for formal occasions & she likes making it curly, like her mother's hair. As Frostbite, Jayn wears a wavy wig, which is always to the middle of her back to contrast with her natural hair. Her eyes are a deep, dark brown. She's known for her feminine, tasteful business casual (worn at the office) & her chic, black-accented streetwear. This is her Frostbite suit. This was her suit used when she worked as Kestrel, Batman's sidekick.
History: (TW for age gap w/a minor--can be excluded)
Jayn’s mother, Dahlia, was a scientist for WayneTech, working on a superhero serum when she got pregnant by her then-secret-boyfriend Bruce Wayne. Being around the serum altered Jayn’s DNA in utero, granting her hydrokinesis at puberty. Hunted by CADMUS and others, Dahlia sent 13 year-old Jayn on a plane to meet her dad, Bruce, in Gotham. Dahlia was snatched up by Men in Black on the airfield, and she would disappear altogether. Jayn and Bruce would go on to have a difficult relationship; he’d apprentice her as his sidekick Kestrel until she’d choose to become Frostbite. (That typically happens after Jason Todd dies at 15, since she bonded with him over the few years they had spent living in the Manor together.) She then trained with Deathstroke to learn to kill (& had a consensual underage relationship w/him) until she decided to be her own hero instead of an assassin. She returned to Gotham years later at the age of 24, determined to do things her way--not Bruce's.
Powers/Abilities:
Hydrokinesis: by the time she's an adult, Jayn's degree of control is so great that she can force water through phase shifts within seconds. For example, she can make the water vapor around her go from a gas to a solid or liquid, producing a protective barrier. She also can easily direct water to fill a cup or to blast open a door. In emergencies, she's enhanced her jumping by propelling herself through the air using the vapor around her. Though she reserves it for more serious occasions, she can seize control of living creatures by manipulating the water within their blood and/or organs.
Olympic-Level Swimming: before she began training with her father or using her powers, Jayn was on track to perform at the Junior Olympics. She's naturally a fast swimmer who can hold her breath for about as long as a free diver can.
Unarmed Combat: After being trained by Batman (and later Slade Wilson), Jayn is a master of her fighting style, a combination of judo, Muay Thai & Krav Maga. Catwoman taught her to fight in heels & Diana Prince gave her basic instruction with a sword. Jayn once used Batarangs as Batman's sidekick, but she switched to throwing knives (and sometimes shards of glass or ice).
Gymnastics: she's undergone the training that any (former) sidekick of Batman, which includes parkour. However, she notes that she's much less graceful and agile than some of her vigilante peers, partly because she had lived a regular middle-class life and started puberty before training.
Stealth: again, regular Batman stuff. She can walk soundlessly, which helps her hide and stalk targets. Sometimes she uses fog to make things extra spooky...
Detective Skills: includes criminology, chemistry, interrogation, lockpicking, disguises & hacking.
First Aid: enough to patch up bullet wounds.
Job(s): currently CFO of WayneTech; has a fashion company in addition to a hidden stash of money accumulated during her time with Slade; socialite-philanthropist who's poised to run the Martha Wayne Foundation once she’s older
Skills/Hobbies: swimming, yoga, traveling, lock-picking, intimidation, stealth, fashion design
Weaknesses:
Emotions: though she has been trained to visually conceal her emotions, especially her negative ones, Jayn has always been passionate. While this can be motivational in the moment, she sometimes acts violently to the point of pursuing vengeance for a decade (wanting to punish those responsible for Jason's death and her mother's disappearance, for example). It can also make her lose control of her powers, typically in the form of the temperature suddenly dropping when she's angry, or a storm forming when she's sad (which is actually environmentally dangerous). In a case of extreme fear, like that which might be caused by magic or a strong dose of Scarecrow's fear gas, she may be unable to use her powers at all.
Human Condition: Jayn isn't superhuman in any way, save for her hydrokinesis. Therefore, she can drown, suffocate, die of blood loss, freeze to death, burn, etc. She can try to slow down her own blood loss, but depending on the severity of her wounds, the strain may do her more harm than good.

Sun Summoner AU
In this AU, my half-Zemeni, half-Fjerdan OC, typically known as Janis “Jayn” Leary-Holt, simply goes by Janis Leary and she's a Sun Summoner. Her mother, a Tidemaker, was worried for her child so Janis was kept in her home country of Novyi Zem, never visiting her Fjerdan father (the Duke of Elling, who secretly sympathizes with Grisha). The other zowa helped train Janis and kept her gift a secret. But one day, a merchant from Kerch witnessed her using her abilities to entertain some children. Looking for a payout, he went to the King of Ravka, saying that Janis could bring down the Fold. Janis is about 35 in this AU, so she’s not ancient, but she’s had a decent amount of training with her powers. She only knows a few phrases of Ravkan, in addition to her native Zemeni and some conversational Fjerdan (necessary to read her father’s letters). Janis can summon bursts of light in various colors, create still illusions, render things temporarily invisible, and/or focus heat on objects.
Will she bring down the Fold? Will she bring down the Darkling?
Please hit "like" if you're interested in writing in this verse with me!

Bruce gets a (slightly) bigger cape when he has Jayn & Jason training with him. This is so they can all huddle together when it's cold or rainy (though Jayn soon learns how to divert the rain).
Maybe there are moments where both kids are on the same side, trying not to blush because their secret crush (I mean best friend) is huddled up next to them.

short PSA for people I RP with
my hydrokinetic OC who looks like Tessa Thompson’s name is Jayn, not Jayne. In almost all verses, her legal first name is spelled Janice, but in the Grishaverse it’s Janis & in her historical verses it’s usually Juana.
I’m not mad—I just noticed that her name has been spelled a few different ways this past week—

wondering if I should write Jayn as speaking Spanish more often...it's "technically" her 1st language, but her mom pretty much taught it to her alongside English. thoughts?

Jayn, do you get brain freeze?
Jayn's giggling.
Yeah, she does. Jayn's powers provide no immunity to the cold unless she uses them specifically for that purpose (& even then, she can't prevent herself from getting the sensation known as brain freeze). So, she's trained herself to swim & fight in very cold environments. Also, she can actually warm up the layer of water vapor (or liquid water, depending) surrounding her to keep herself warm in case of emergency, but she finds that doing so takes her focus away from whatever else she's trying to do.
TL;DR: yes!
