Sad Boy Hours: Billy Batson

He's trying so hard to get the screaming adults in the room to just stop screaming at each other and be reasonable.

He is immediately dismissed and storms off, justifiably insulted.

And Billy goes right back to blaming himself, trying to figure out where he went wrong, how he could have fixed things, managed the emotions of the room better--even though he is 100% correct and the adults are absolutely failing, and badly.

"Even if he's wrong...I should respect him." Honey, the thing that's eating at you is the absolute dogshit way they act and then expect you to just accept as normal. These grown-ass heroes should not be hitting each other.

And a degree, honey. Several of them.

He sounds like a teacher trying to get the class to behave and that script keeps failing him. Over and over the adults around him dismiss him for his optimism, ignore his calls for reason. And they're heroes. They're the good guys and they tear into each other regularly and viciously. And Billy is fifteen years old in a room of adults screaming at each other. The team is sometimes down right abusive, and this child is trying to keep them from falling apart.

I worry about him, ya know?

In the aftermath of Infinite Crisis, J'onn struggles with loving and losing Maxwell Lord, having been left to try and reconcile the man he knew with the monster he revealed himself to be. (Un)luckily for him, Max is there to help.

Finally got around to finishing one of my many, many WIPs. It's angsty, post-Infinite Crisis J'onnMax. I'd apologise, but let's be real, if you're a Max fan, you're a glutton for punishment at this point.

(Also, I gotta plug the comic that my good pal @/jailcell9000 over on twitter drew, inspired by the fic. It's what motivated me to actually finish writing this, because it's way too good.)

Self-Promotion as Distraction

Want something to read? Here's my stuff that I'd rec, along with what kind of mood it's good for. Feedback adored if you read any of these and wanna give it.

Supernatural - The (Second) Book of James - Long Good if you like stories written before Season 9, tons of angel lore and metaphysics, angel-vessel relations, Jimmy Novak, a story told backwards-and-forwards, and something with a very bittersweet ending that is not actually the ending. Some warning for tragedy, of a sort. If you love Cas and Jimmy, though, it's a hell of an adventure, especially if you like Cas as a total badass.

Star Trek: The Original Series - The Arc of the Wolf - Long Good if you love your Trek stories very grounded and humanistic. Pretty much the life story of Montgomery Scott, it's very much a Scotty story first and a Trek story only sometime after that. There's drama, humor, high seas piracy, friendship, found family and even if you don't actually know Trek very well, I've been told you don't need to in order to enjoy it.

Star Wars - Witness me - Long Good if you like Maul and specifically Obimaul, especially with the more Legends lean on Maul's characterization. Basically an AU where Maul was captured after Theed, the series doesn't ignore the fact that Maul was cut in half, so it's very heavy on the psychology and relationship building. It also has a whole gamut of emotions explored, and beyond the Obimaul, you also have found family and friendship building and an absolutely awesome cast of clones in Blackbirds: Year One. Probably my most popular work, and not entirely without reason.

Star Wars - Undersong - Long-ish Good if you like id-fic! A Sith AU where both Obi-Wan and Maul are raised by Sidious before escaping together, it's largely written in a serial format, with short chapters and a lot of momentum. Good if you don't like long, dense chapters, but do like a story with some real rollercoaster emotion. I enjoyed the hell out of the supporting cast, and so does everyone who reads it, too.

DC Comics/JLI - Past Resolution's Power - Mid-length Good if you want a shorter tale but with teeth. The prequel series to Stardust, this one primarily looks at the short span of time between the book Justice League: Generation Lost (and Booster Gold Vol. 2) and Flashpoint, mostly centered around Booster, but also with Rani and Rip and Michelle and Guy. It's a pretty heavy and genuinely mature story, though it's got its light spots, too. Also called the Mk. I timeline, as its the first.

DC Comics/JLI - Carbon Cycle - Long Good if you want something long, involved, sometimes incredibly fluffy and definitely filled with warmth. The Mk. III timeline -- meaning the third reboot, versus the Mk. I timeline above -- takes place mostly around DC's Rebirth era, on the notion that the characters aren't getting cleanly reset every time and instead that there are these echoes from past lives. The main story, Stardust, is Booster/Beetle slowburn, lots of funny but also lots of sincerity, and later on some heavier stuff creeping in, but the supporting cast has some serious screentime, too.

I have too many things to write already but now I'm thinking about how funny a fic where Danny is in the JLI would be

If you don't know, the Justice League International is a specific line-up of the Justice League without most of the usual suspects-- Batman is around sometimes, but Martian Manhunter is the leader. It's more of a sitcom than anything else. Anyway, I just think Phantom would be a perfect fit with the rest of those weirdos.

Anyway I'm not writing it because I don't have an actual idea, just vibes, but the vibes would be hilarious

WIP Wednesday

I'm alive!

As proof of life, let's do a fic accountability game, rules stolen from @authenticaussie, bastardized by myself.

Here's a chance to control my life a little bit!

Here’s how it works:

Make a list of five (or so--) of your WIPs for your followers to chose from.

I like providing short synopses/teases to give some context, but you can be super vague if you desire

Post a snippet from one of your fics that you’ve worked on in the past week.

Your followers get to send an ask with one of the five listed WIPs!

You must then write a paragraph or so in that file. If the filename is one you can’t share from (for example, an event or gift fic), write a paragraph on it anyway, and then another that you can share from something else.

I do recommend adjusting the writing requirement depending on the size of your following. The point is to make some progress, so if you're not expecting a lot of asks, maybe make your goal bigger, and the inverse is true for large followings. Do you.

"The International": Tim Drake thinks that putting together a new version of the Justice League International is a great idea. He is the only one who thinks this. It happens anyway.

Swap Day: Jon Kent gets switched with a future version of himself, and learns some...confusing things.

“...I mean...ugh.” Mary brushed some hair out of her face. “Like, on the one hand, it’s super nice of Tim to offer, and It’s…It’s not like I don’t know most of the other people he wants to invite, but also…I feel like the JLI is cursed? Historically?”

Billy spent a good solid fifteen seconds trying to figure out a polite, positive thing to say about his time on the original Justice League International. In the end, he only managed a shrug and a meager “...Eh? I mean it was a different lineup. And Bruce was also like…drowning in grief, Guy was there, Ted honestly loved the drama–”

“Yeah, yeah sure, and this team may be free of old men who under any other circumstances would be dangerous alcoholics, and I appreciate that. But…I think I’m going to get stuck being the parent.”

Billy winced. “Oh no.”

“Yep!”

“Oh, that’s…I mean…but Jaime’s going to be there?”

“Yeah, but do you really think Jaime can get Yara to back off? For any reason? Ever?”

Billy rubbed his chin. “...Well maybe Tim can–”

“Create an international incident by being snarky in an American way that will not translate well? Because he really wants this team to be a global thing and I’m going to be honest I’m not totally confident that the others can or will be looking out for that. Additionally, Yara has already threatened to drown him–”

“Okay so you’ve already locked yourself into this.”

“...Apparently.” 

“Then you need to recruit a co-parent.”

“Oh god.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Oh no you’re right.”

“Mmmhm.”

Mary held her face in her hands and groaned.

Hey, do you ever wonder if Superboy has ever interacted with Booster Gold? Like that’s got some narrative pull with the Superhero as Brand™️ stuff. And he’s pair bonded with Ted Kord Blue Beetle, who Tim has a weird fanboy crush on so like, there’s a thread there.

(Superboy, only name Superboy, looking at a 50 foot billboard of Booster Gold: Ok the JLA doesn’t like me and the JSA doesn’t care, I guess I can try JLI)

Revisiting Some Old (and New) Fic Ideas!

Obstacle Course: Linda and Wally babysit Owen, Bart, and Thad for the weekend to ease their fears about parenthood.

The Grandmother Effect: An older woman finds Damian Wayne unconscious in an alley and nurses him back to health. The problem is, he doesn't remember who he is, and he thinks she's his grandmother.

The Houdini Clause: Scott Free-centric boarding school AU

Radio Silence: College student and radio show host, Thad Thawne moves in with Tim Drake at Bart's request in this 90s AU.

If Ever In My Nature: HS AU where Guy recalls the summer he fell in love with a boy named Taylor from his school's buddy program.

I Bet You're Wondering: College AU where Ted and Booster meet in the emergency room.

orange: Guy Gardner decides to foster a little girl in this no powers AU.

Thicker Than Blood: Jade asks for Ivy's help after Roy shows up in her apartment, suffering from a mysterious illness. She suspects it's poison, but it's unlike anything she's ever seen before.

Sky's The Limit: College football player, Michael "Booster Gold" Carter pretends to come from a wealthy family to impress Ted Kord.

Little Winter: Stephanie Brown takes a little girl to the ER and decides to take responsibility for her when she realizes the little girl has nowhere to go.

A story of J'onn J'onzz, the man he loves, and the secrets they keep. Takes place during Hawkworld #23.

Literally, the only kind of Gar fic I want to write* is fic about Gar starting out as a villain and then ending up on a superhero team as part of his probation.

I want him to get sent to join the Teen Titans and be reluctant to bond with his teammates because the last time he was on a team, it was the Doom Patrol, and they all died.

I want him to have to join Young Justice and angst and mope about how the whole team is friends with each other but he's not pure and noble like them, and therefore, they'd never want to be his friends. (Spoiler: he becomes friends with them.)

I want him to end up with the Justice League International as part of the JLI's new initiative for reforming villains who can be rehabilitiated, and bond with J'onn, Guy, Tora, and Bea, and end up working shifts at Guy's bar.

All of the fic about anti-villain Gar bonding with his superhero team. That's all I want to write.

With Transformers the continuities I can work with are G1, Beast Wars, IDW1, Prime, RID 2015 and Earthspark.

With Yakuza I had played 1,2,3 and 7, currently playing Ishin so I can write characters from those games and settings.

I'm fine with doing oc work, I just need a good idea of what the oc is like.

Pricing (on US dollars):

$0.010 per word in any fic, so 200 would be $2, 1000 would be $10, etc.

$0.015 per word if the fic goes over the 3000 limit, so 200 extra words would be $3 extra, 500 would be $7,5 extra, etc.

Some rules:

I will not write stuff I'm uncomfortable with which be the basic no incest, pedophilia, bestiality, minor/adult relationship.

I don't have much experience with nsfw so I'm not doing those.

Self insert, also no experience there.

It can be general or ship fic.

1~2 weeks to finish the fic. I still have college and I'm looking for work so I'm doing it in my free time.

I need a good idea of what the fic is about, so the prompt needs to have the characters you want on it, basic plot and the genre you want the story to be, and what you don't want on the fic.

You can ask for the outline of the fic to be sure it is going how you want it.

Fic will be posted on AO3 under the commissioner's permission, if they don't want it to be public it's their choice.

We can discuss the fic length when starting the commission, payment is done after the fic is completed
