THE DREAM MACHINE GAME SPOILERS (post-game rambling)

if i had a nickel every time i experienced media with an AI trying to give birth to itself in a human baby form through the protagonist's wife - i'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

on a whole i'm really >:3 about this game though!!! i should've known from the title (which is why i got it ofc) but just wasn't sure if it'd live up to my expectations for either the dream aspects or the machine aspects, i think it did for both though

the dreams could've been more dream-like in logic at some times (though i feel like they usually did feel p dreamlike), though with how difficult the puzzles were already maybe it's a good thing they weren't lol i did like the environments though like the wife dreaming of being the captain of a ship where all of the workers are clones of her husband, the stressed nurse dreaming about a cool fantasy land where she's the village medic, the wfh guy dreaming having some weird cube-like dream land that nobody expected but most of it being manipulated by the machine controlling him...

decent amount of dream psychology mentioned, specifically jung's collective unconsciousness (is that a zero escape reference??? /j) and some freud mention iirc? the disk-shaped shared realm of dreams that people start from the center of and move towards the edge as they age while being able to traverse the plane between people's dreams as well is an interesting concept - feel like i haven't seen that many games come up with their own dream lore like that. at that part in the center with the prenatal barrier and baby dreams being raw potential energy and such, i hadn't heard as much about that irl so looked it up in case it was some obscure theory i hadn't heard of before but didn't find anything unfortunately ^^;

also love the ending in like chapter 5 where you can just. choose to start working with the machine instead after almost killing it, i didn't expect them to give us that option. sorry to my pregnant wife but you're saying i can inherit this dead guy's whole repertoire of dream research passed down for generations and explore the dreamscape as i wish with this cool sentient eldritch machine? fuck yeah let's start hiding the bodies /hj (jk I would go help my wife if i were victor. but i'm not i'm the player and i want to learn about dreams.)

also re: the machine itself i thought it was a neat character ^^ was a bit ??? at what it's goals were at first, bc obviously the mortons were using it to map the unconscious but then it wasn't clear if the machine also wanted to do that or had its own agenda, but self preservation of its sentience and trying to maintain its existence by leaching from the dreams of others was a good motive. and then also 🥺me when the ai is lonely and misses its friends (and accidentally kills them when they stop giving it unsuspecting residents to feed off of but dw about that)

very 👀at that bit in the 3rd floor neighbors' dreams where we found out it was trying to build itself a body in the dream world out of dream npc's organs so it could move around the dream world as it wished without the clunky tentacles that kinda just stay in one place and die. another one of those things that's like 'bro it's a dream you don't have to be that thorough about it to make it work' but i get it with the weird shared dreamscape lore this game has set up and it was a very 'bro wtf' reveal. gotta respect trying the frankenstein method

actually that makes me think. are dream npcs sentient in this universe??? i was just thinking about it like 'at least it was just stealing organs from npcs and not people' but idk how this fits with the collective unconscious lore.

also i do have to address the ending of the game besides just that 2 nickels joke (the other media was demon seed btw. was a pretty disturbing watch ^^;;). that one bit felt like the stanley parable hole ending and the other bit felt like the 2001 a space odyssey ending. the playing god part was very ??? i didn't know what to think of it at first (still not sure) and this is the only screenshot i took from that portion.

that whole final colorful shifting area with the victors of different ages reminded me of the denver meow wolf exhibit (i haven't been yet but from the pics i've seen of it on the site). then i saw the area with our mother giving birth to us and i was like. Ah. Unfortunately this game has given us a lot of experiences with climbing inside of small holes, even when they're inside other people...

was also surprised that we just took up the machine's offer to share our consciousness and stay stuck in the dream world. feel like it'd be more effective to give us some options there and have multiple endings, but i guess if it was us (machine loses too much power to survive outside of the dream) or our child (would grow up possessed by the machine irl) makes sense as a trade, our poor wife though... i do like dreams but being stuck in the dream world forever like that would be OTL i am glad the machine got to survive though

anyway my final review is. puzzles were pretty hard so thank you steam and yt walkthroughs. ending was weird, it was too metaphysical for me to fully wrap my head around but i do like the artistic vision. game on a whole is good especially when you're autistic about dreams and ai characters, played it for like 10 hours straight. dream machine is my favorite character (no surprise). why did the game make us unbirth ourselves.

Garfield: The Movie

AM: There’s an interesting writing choice in Garfield: The Movie regarding the setting. It begins in a cul-de-sac, just a few miles from a large city. For Garfield, the cul de sac is safe; he knows the ins and outs, all of the neighboring cats and dogs, and it’s where he always gets his way. Anything beyond the cul de sac, however, is dangerous, unknown, even hostile, and that’s not even mentioning the city. With all of this emphasis placed on place, one begins to wonder where exactly the film takes place. One would assume that it takes place in Garfield creator Jim Davis’ home state of Indiana. Wikipedia, however, claims that it takes place in Los Angeles of all places. What’s interesting, though, is that the movie does everything its power to obscure the actual setting from the viewer. There are no signs anywhere in this film that say “Los Angeles,” no one mentions living in L.A., and there’s just no defining characteristics. It’s not even a matter of the camera crew just choosing not to shoot things that screamed L.A.; things are deliberately edited to obscure that fact. There’s a scene towards the end of Act 2 where Garfield has to go to the city to rescue Odie from the clutches of an evil infomercial personailty. On the freeway, we get a shot of the city skyline and a freeway exit sign—which reads, not Los Angeles, but “The City.” A bus’s destination sign reads “City Center.” The so-called “Los Angeles” looks more like a movie set for a film taking place in New York. You would think that, taking place in L.A., the movie would have taken the golden opportunity to take Garfield to L.A.’s iconic locales. Garfield in front of the Grauman Theatre. Garfield at the Hollywood sign. Garfield at Dodger’s Stadium. But no, none of that.

Garfield: The Movie’s setting is strange because they don’t utilize it for what you might expect. The effort the filmmakers went through to hide the truth about the setting is rather impressive, I’ll say that. It doesn’t seem like it ultimately accomplished anything though. And so, ultimately, the choices made regarding the setting resulted in an affect that is neither good, nor bad, just… there. Much like the film itself.

I give this movie 5 out of 10 lasagnas.

JK: For my final official critique here at Garfieldandme.com LLC, I will be reviewing Garfield the Movie. How did it make me feel? How does Garfield make me feel at this point? I thought I knew, but as of right now… It’s mixed.

I thought I didn’t like Garfield. I thought it would be funny to employ irony against the fat cat. When I began writing about Garfield, the original mission was to find a way in, primarily through cruel joking and punching down, every week and that was it; that was going to be the focus of this project.

But finding a way through… It requires energy. It requires an actual interest in whatever you’re writing about, whatever you’re exploring. And as the project went on and on, my interest and energy waned. It became increasingly difficult to talk Garf. The ratio of good ideas/fun writing sessions to phoning it in grew smaller and smaller. Part of the fun, at first, was acknowledging the pure magnitude of syndication Garfield has amassed. But, diving into it, getting deep, it’s hard to keep a smiling face when the material brings so little to you. Life is short, and Garf is long.

There are hidden gems in the bog of never-ending Mondays. There are glimpses of Jim Davis giving a shit. And those moments, when they come up, are worth cherishing. It compelled me to write knowing the cat was acting in an interesting way. It gave me material to work with. It gave me hope.

And then, we’d get another week of duds. Then, another. It’d go on, and I’d feel frustration, apathy, devastation, etc. over and over again. It became routine.

So, Garfield the Movie. What makes Garfield the Movie interesting? It’s Garfield’s first live-action adaptation. It stars… movie stars. Garfield is CGI. These elements are all fine. The whole movie is just fine. And that complete milquetoast quality makes the film, ironically, a great Garfield adaptation. There were times I was watching the screen and I hoped the movie would be worse, more blatantly disgusting or bold. Maybe then I could write about it. But no, from start time to end, this movie is okay.

Bill Murray sounds like the voice Davis and Co. settled on when they brought Garf to the home television. Jon is whatever. You can have a discarded Chik Fil A wrapper replace Jon in this movie and nothing would change. Odie is lovable and fun (maybe the highlight). Jennifer Love Hewitt.. I mean, c’mon. Liz was hot already, but…

There’s nothing really deep here.

The only redeeming portion of the whole film is the credits. I’m serious. There, it tells another story. Comics and largely comic strips are a medium of sole ownership. Charles Schultz storyboards, Schultz draws, he signs his name in the bottom left corner. And that’s it. Film, in this critic’s opinion, is one of the most collaborative mediums of expression out there. On even the worst films (and I’m not saying Garfield runs in this camp), there are probably five or more people who gave up hours of their lives in an attempt to make you smile, to entertain you for a little bit. It’s interesting to see this many people interpreting Davis’s cat. This bird’s eye view perspective, however, does not negate how bored I felt during the film. And my opinion doesn’t really matter. The best of them, working on this project, hopefully made this to make a child (or the rare Garf fan) happy. Or they were miserable. Regardless, they all made the film. I spent an hour of my life watching. We are in this together.

We reflect whatever we spend time with. If you spend hours with the cat, you become the cat. You spend time working overtime at a job you hate, and suddenly you hate yourself. You spend the night out, maybe drinking wine with friends on a weekend, at a little bar on the outside of town. It’s August. The night is air is warm, and it looks like no one is on Wilshire tonight. Except you and people you love. You laugh and really feel it in your chest, in your stomach. You look at everyone and, maybe it’s the light, maybe it’s the Merlot, but they emanate a soft golden glow covering their forearms to their rears to their legs to their feet. You look down at yourself, and you’re glowing too.

Was it Anne Dillard who wrote “How we spend our days, of course, is how we spend our lives”? Am I remembering that correctly? What year is it? What was I doing about this? How does Garfield make me feel? How am I feeling right now? Stepping away from the cat is not easy, and in a sense, this gesture feels like stepping away from this past year in its good and nasty. I want to change my life, and so I’ll change my relationship with him. It’s small, but why not. Life is short, and Garf is long. Thanks for spending this time with me, I’ll never forget it.

besides the obvious, and that is andrea/sam staring across the room at each other with HATRED in their eyes? jk. (im not kidding.)

no but seriously, if we ignore odie’s scheduling issues and pretend we could have her back on the show, sam is like... the perfect CHARACTER plot hole filler. ignore actual plot, because like - what even IS going on in this show ever? but i’m talking like emotional, DEEP, character plot holes that i just wish we could have more exploration with. [and i know, we have too many characters, there’s Crisis which makes no sense, etc. but lets just...indulge me for a sec. you asked! lol]

sam gives the perfect excuse to dive further in lena’s past - have some flashbacks, make some shit up, do whatever. show more about their connection prior to Reign.... with her, lena and jack back in metropolis - it doesn’t even have to be gay, it can just be like... giving lena more substance besides her family drama (which i LOVE, and you all know i love). but we also know sam and jack gave lex and lillian THE BUSINESS too, and i wanna hear about it. i wanna see lena-sam’s first meeting. i wanna see sam’s reaction to lex’s bs. i wanna see lena tell sam she’s moving to national city and have sam make fun of her for it but ultimately support her. i just wanna see more reasons why lena is so GOOD.

sam also gives MUCH more weight to andrea and lena’s relationship as well. rojascorp is already pretty great with what’s implied, but if i can’t have true previous-history reigncorp (which we know happened, but for canon we’ll pretend it didn’t), then i picture something like from @i-am-robie ‘s wedding date AU where sam and jack are just like Team Lena forever, and the shade they throw against Andrea after her betrayal would be HUGE. sam, who we know has been ACHING for a real reason to hate andrea the whole time would be all OVER it. and so it makes andrea more well rounded than just the weird (ex)girlfriend vibe and nonsense with leviathan...and is just so JUICY. so then you’d have this present day tension where sam wants to defend lena, and andrea is reeling with how to put their relationship back together, and she hates that lena loves sam so much enough to save her life...and lena is just like -- i’m a luthor i don’t have friends (but literally you have just as many as kara at this point). and they’d go round and round and i’d get my sam-andrea hatred, but they’d probably be forced to work together to help lena against lex, and it would be SO FUNNY and delightful. andrea having to listen to sam? sam having to follow andrea’s lead? oh GOD.

plus then, it also puts kara in this weird position of like.... where do i stand with lena? oh god i HATE my boss but i have to pretend to like her....and SAM is here, and she REALLY hates andrea, and i really like sam.... and oh boy this is uncomfortable for everyone. like i could watch a show that just revolves around that for.... more seasons than i’d like to admit, lmao.

and then there’s also alex and kelly. who i REALLY want to be invested in, but i struggle when im just handed a relationship that took 2 episodes to develop. BUT if you insert sam (NOT to break them up) just to have a conversation - like imagine she meets kelly? and she feels all these weird feelings about what she almost had with alex, but she realizes kelly is so amazing, and she sort of has to deal with stepping back and allowing alex to be happy. that’s some DRAMA right there, but its in a good way. and it gives dansen more weight, because its just this added thing that makes you think. idk that’s just one suggestion out of many.

then, because everything is fake and time doesn’t matter and we retcon things in canon anyway simply due to laziness, i think they could dive deeper into her story overall as a kryptonian - make some shit up and have her actually have some kryptonian background, and her and kara can go down that entire path of really figuring themselves out and sharing this history together. it can be the friendship we always should have had for kara, where there’s an equal who struggles and UNDERSTANDS and has to come into their own. even if sam doesn’t keep her powers (i’m ok with either one, just explain it - although i’m always down for her to have SOMETHING).... it would just be great growth for kara without it having to be about a love interest. and maybe lena helps her figure out her powers or develops a weapon or two for her - OH AND BONUS - maybe she joins alex to fight some serious street crime. WHO KNOWS.

Well here I am 28. It’s been a long while. A lot of thing have happened since then. I’ve since graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Been through several jobs. None that have to do with my degree, go figure. Been working on many trips. I’ve moved to Colorado, it’s been three years already. I met the love of my life out here. Be have fur babes and are looking for a house of our own.

January of 2018 I moved out here by with college friend Cassy. We moved into this cute place in Golden Colorado. We had the cutest land lords Elmer and Elaine Dudden it was a two bed one bath apartment and it was “cheap” and ours. It had a pond with loud resident geese. The back yard was the beginning of the mountain which is what we came here for. I worked as a pharmacy technician at cvs in Wheatridge. Cassy finally found a job in April and she’s still there. We spent a lot of weekend down town Denver and took the light rail there. We were lucky enough to love across the street from the last stop on the W-Line station(quite handy). We eventually moved out and separated because Cassy wanted to move closer to downtown and I couldn’t afford that on my tiny wage.

I got my job at cvs in the November before moving out here. I started on January third 2018. I managed to get a full time position without the weekend. I had a nasty manager who was one and a half months older then me and threatened by me even though she has the doctorate degree. I met so good people there though. When I moved to dtc with my boyfriend I made a transfer to the Glendale location. I got a new and lovely boss who didn’t write me up because she needed someone to blame her issues on. While I was there she was demoted. Probs because she was the problem not me... Glendale was the busiest store in the state. So it had its trade offs. I happened to be the only person who could make it to work when it snowed... disaster. I eventually begged for a transfer because that place was bad for my health and both the pharmacists who made working there tolerable had left for better places. My last transfer was to a store only a few minutes from home. More trade offs, I had to work weeks here, but I was away from the place that took my ability to be a person a way. I worked at the last place for only a few months before I was approached by a girl I had met at Glendale. She had gotten out of the cvs craziness and asked if I’d like to join. I got the job real easy. And it’s the job that’s been the best since I’ve. Been in Colorado. Lowest stress and drama and no customers. I hate it the least.

I met Jonathan in March of 2018 and my life has been the best since then. He’s 6 months older then me and has 5 other siblings one being his twin. We went on our first date to an ice cream shop and had a tiny cup and talked for hours. I tenant liked him but I had bad luck before with making first dates second dates. Well I was lucky enough to get a second. He was in college still at this time so our dates were on the weekends and couldn’t be all day but I know we both wanted them to be. Our dates(not in any real order) were mini golf and sushi before he made it over to my house after I had spent a weekend camping with Cassy were her asked me to be his girlfriend. It wasn’t as romantic as you would have thought but it was one of the best days. May 28th. After that we had a lot of lovely sleep overs and dinners and breakfasts I made for him. He graduated Colorado in December of 2018 after about 8 years. I was so proud of him even though neither of us our using our degrees. After about a year we’ve moved in together and it’s been about a year and a half since we be done that. We will have been together three years in may. We have gone a lot of places together. We have been to Wisconsin a few times for the holidays and wedding and I’ve dragged home all over the country side (he loved every minute of it jk). We have been camping, we’ve been to the sand dunes, Pagosa Springs all in Colorado. We been to New Orleans with his family and soon the be a few more places to make memories with like Orlando Vegas and Glenwood Springs. We spend a lot of weeks together with his oldest brother and Jenni looking for gold flakes in the mountains.

Since we’ve been together we have gotten new jobs, we had Odie the best American black lab who is the goodest boy he is 6 and super smart LOVES his dad and tolorates me he loves me too really but never as much as dad. I rescued a sweet pup with a rough life named Ellie a black lab mix of sorts. We thought she was mixed with hound of some sort. The cutest! She was wild and loved to run outside. There must have been something bad that happened to her. She made it with us from September the December through heartworm treatment and many times getting out in the neighborhood. She made her last run for on January second 2019. She crossed rainbow bridge to be where she was longing to be after all. We miss her every day. ♥️ so 5 days later because I didn’t want to be without my own dog we brought home the sweetest baby puppy that we named Ruby! She is the best thing to come out of Ellie leaving the world. We love her so much. Ruby is a English black lab. She has the biggest darkest black eyes that reminds you of a cartoon. She’s pretty and little we love her so much. She’s already a a year old 😭 where has my baby gone.

I have been to all but 5 states including I still need to hit New Mexico, Oklahoma, Hawaii, North Carolina, and Delaware So I guess that traveling with the family is a big thing in my life. But now. Have a new travel buddy. I also want to make my count go up to 50 in the states I’m so close!
