An Exploration Of Maki In 196 - JJK Character Analysis
Tumblr media
First of all , a fantastic chapter that I have no gripes with. The implicit detailing regarding Maki's freedom unfortunately however lead to people misinterpreting what Maki's freedom is.
Tumblr media
Maki and Mai's dynamic has a central theme to unravel. They both exist as the same individual merely with different essences , due to this dilemma , neither can develop as a whole if the other is unwilling. However as a farewell " gift " , Mai chooses to kill herself to free Maki of the burden ( Mai's existence ) she's forced to carry. Subsequently , Maki will be able to exist as an existence filled with an essence.
Tumblr media
This death is very consequential in dissecting her freedom for before Mai dies , she chooses to leave Maki with a request. The forenamed request being to destroy everything and explicitly stated to simultaneously " abandon " everything else.
Due to this effectuation , Maki loses everything , her emotions , her morality , her rationality and becomes a dehumanized being or simply put a monster. A monster hellbent on destroying everything and everyone that opposed her , all to fulfil her sister's wishes. Her own human ' heart ' ( figuratively ) is stolen from her ( first due to the Zenin clan's social hierarchy and secondly due to her own sister ). Her heart being a metaphorical representation of one's rational morality , a topic that the battle between Naoya and Maki talks about and firmly expresses.
Tumblr media
Going back to this panel , Maki became captive ( according to Miyo , because of herself , curses or other humans ). The most applicable exemplifcation if either herself or other humans because both can be attributed to Mai ( for she serves as a distinct individual to the superficial viewer but is concurrently Maki herself ).
Maki , due to her innate rage and desire to destroy everything in her view , was unable to be anything besides that. Her own existence was filled with the tenacity to destroy.
Tumblr media
Due to her conflict with Miyo , Maki is able to free herself from her own congenital tendency to destroy , the hate inflicted upon Maki by Mai. Consequently , Maki is able to " enjoy " fighting. Not anymore as a tool to destroy but to fight for her herself and to feel pleasure or rather freedom while doing so.

Cool Maki character development in this chapter. I'm still very uninterested in this fight.

JJK 197 LEAKS!
Okay I know some people are upset that Maki’s getting some help in the fight against Naoya but l kinda like it???
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see her do this solo, but at the same time, Naoya is pretty much getting his ass whooped by everything he looked down on
A woman/girl: Maki
A weapon wielder: Hagane, the katana guy. Naoya once said in a manga panel that he saw sorcerers who relied on weapons as weak or something like that 🙄 bitch your precious ‘toji-kyuuuun’ uses weapons so stfu
A Kamo: Noritoshi. Naoya probably gets Choso flashbacks lol
A feminist: Miyo, the sumo guy. It took me a while to think of it but then I remembered that one of the reasons ppl actually liked this guy (aside from helping Maki) was because he asked two teenage girls to fight sumo with him. for those who don’t know, girls aren’t allowed to participate in sumo because of this old rule stating that they were ‘impure’ because of their periods or some shit. Anyways, he clearly loves sumo and is an ancient sorcerer, but he said fuck sexism, girls should be allowed to sumo! therefore, he gives me feminist vibes which naoya would hate 🥰
IF THEY MANAGE TO KILL NAOYA ONCE AND FOR ALL... I would see it as poetic justice 😌

what the—this man is immortal I swear! the higher ups were so worried about Gojo but they needed to worry about Naoya and his ability to constantly evolve like a Pokémon and survive, whether man or cursed spirit
