The Mosley Review: When Evil Lurks
Tumblr media
I tend to have a high tolerance and high expectation for horror films. When it comes to films about demonic possession, they're constantly all about how religion factors in or the standard set by the original The Exorcist with all the head spinning, levitating and gross out body horror tropes we've all come to know. Evil Dead Rise earlier this year was fantastic, but that is more of the extreme and fantastical nature. The last great grounded possession film I've seen was The Last Exorcism of Emily Rose and maybe The Last Exorcism. Both had their flaws, but delivered an engaging story and creepy visuals. What makes a great supernatural film is the ability to deliver a tension filled story that is not only compelling, but unpredictable. You have to really go places where most wouldn't dare and remove the common safe guards in place for certain characters. It has been a very long time since such a film has existed and has left me in a state of shock. What I really enjoyed about this film was that it was straight forward and gives you the right amount of lore and exposition that keeps you on edge. The sense of dread and tension is so thick throughout the film and I loved every second of it. Sure, there are moments of terror you could see coming, but you're still shocked once it happens and the sheer brutality of it was insane. Like any horror film, there are illogical character moments that are frustrating, but in this case it serves the story and highlights the flaws of the characters. That's how it should be done and I'm glad this film excels where almost all fail.
Tumblr media
Ezequiel Rodriguez was excellent and endearing as Pedro. I loved his steadfast decision making, but man did he seriously put everyone in danger when it wasn't necessary at times. I did love that he was the most capable and smartest characters in the film as he saw what was coming when nobody would believe him. Demián Salomon was also excellent as his loyal and somewhat softer brother Jimmy. I loved their chemistry and even though they were on edge for the majority, I was happy to follow them both through this nightmare. Jimmy was one of the major catalysts in the most clever way that if you weren't paying attention, you'd miss why. Paula Rubinsztein was awesome and probably the only kind soul in the film as their mother. She delivers the ultimate lore dump and setting up the rules when dealing with a possessed or as referred to in the film as "The Rotten", and man it was so fun and creepy. Silvia Sabater was awesome as a Cleaner or the film's version of an exorcist. Her scenes were so intriguing and she adds that perfect level of strength in her faith herself and wisdom.
Tumblr media
The film is well shot and what I loved is that there isn't any major visual trickery or CGI that tries to add to the look of despair. The make-up effects were top notch and equally grotesque in the best way possible. The physical horror was amazing and creepy in execution when it came to a scene involving Pedro's family. Like I said before, the tension in this film is thick and it never really lets up as the story continues to drag you through the hellish nightmare Pedro and Jimmy go through. I can't stress enough how this film goes for the unexpected and how unrelenting the violence is. This film has definitely raised the bar on how to deliver a perfectly paced demonic possession story that has thematic elements about grief, family and how it touches on faith, but it doesn't overtake the nonstop terror. This will hands down be the best horror film I have seen for the remainder of 2023. It is currently in theatres for a limited time and it will soon come to the horror streaming service Shudder. I highly recommend it for this spooky season for the curious, but it is NOT for the faint of heart. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

The Boogaloo Craze
The Boogaloo was only a brief period, it was all the rage for a while and then it was over quickly. In many ways, and in the opinion of many of the musicians who played it, Boogaloo was just a blip on the radar. It was extremely popular with audiences and it was at the top of the charts from 1966-1968. But the musicians who were playing before, during, and after Boogaloo, typically had quite a bit of disdain for the genre. While this period may have been brief, it was culturally significant. The Latin Boogaloo was the product of “African Americans and Puerto Ricans in New York City partying together for many years” (Flores, p. 76) and the meeting place between “Latin music and the musical culture of the United States”. This was a pivotal moment in the crossroads of African American and Puerto Rican culture, the Boogaloo served as an “expression of these two cultures in the pivotal years of their experience in New York” (Flores, p. 93).
In our previous reading, Echale Salsita: Sones and Musical Revolution, Moore discussed how culture is actively recreated with each new generation. In Flores’ article, the Boogaloo evolves from these two marginalized communities in New York City. African Americans and Puerto Ricans had been living together in the same neighborhoods, working in the same communities, and sharing cultures with each other for years. By the mid 1960s, there were generations of Puerto Ricans who were born and raised in New York. The Boogaloo draws on elements of both Latin and African American music. The mambo, the son, the cha-cha-cha were latin elements of it, while there were also elements of r&b, funk, jazz, and soul.
Eddie Palmieri, Pete Rodriguez, Joe Bataan, and Joe Cuba were successful musicians during this time, just to name a few. I really loved how music centered this article is, but I’m anxious to learn about the Boogaloo dance in the studio. There were so many different artists mentioned, and great pieces of music in the chapter that it had a whole Discography in addition to the Notes and Bibliography. Joe Cuba and his band recorded a lot of the Boogaloo hits like “Bang! Bang!” (1966). Flores’ references the song “El Pito” or “Never Going Back to Georgia” by Jimmy Sabater, another big name of the Boogaloo craze (p. 80). I found a version of that song recorded by Joe Cuba and it’s so fun. There are all the quintessential elements of Boogaloo; the whistling, the heavy drums and percussion, the mix of Spanish and English, the shouting and clapping, etc. Jimmy Sabater made the comment about the irony of his band singing a song about never going back to Georgia, when “none of them had even been to Georgia before” (p.  80)

Joe Cuba Sextet - “El Pito”
Flores also mentions Dizzy Gillespie and Machito’s recording of “Manteca” that became a cornerstone of latin and jazz fusion. I love this arrangement of Dizzy and Chano Pozo. This is definitely more jazz heavy, but the influence can still be felt. The drums, the shouting refrain is “pachanga”, the clave is present throughout, etc.
youtube
Dizzy Gillespie & Chano Pozo - “Manteca”
Joe Bataan was African American and Filipino, but said to be of Puerto Rican culture. Bataan recorded bestsellers because he sang about his own life experiences, and many people could identify with that. This recording of “Mestizo” by Joe Bataan is an appeal to and celebration of a broad Latin community. I’m not sure if this would be considered a real Boogaloo, it definitely has a lot of the same elements, but it almost sounds more like a disco or funk song.

The Expression of Boogaloo
In the 1960’s was the end of one era and the beginning of another! It was the year that the Palladium ballroom officially closed for good, marking the end of the age of the Mambo and marking the beginning of a new decade. The dance that was in the up and coming during this time the boogaloo which was starting to grow popularity, mostly because of Jimmy Sabater’s new hit single called “Bang Bang”. This song illustrated the defining theme and musical feature of the boogaloo is intercultural togetherness (Flores, “Cha-Cha with a Backbeat”. P. 78). Let me tell you the boogaloo is not an easy feat. I completely understand why most inexperienced dancers chose to curve the boogaloo for the ever so simple Cha-cha.
Beside my own personal difficulties, the boogaloo had a lot of significance and holds the cross-cultural fusions seemed to differ from those of previous generations. The boogaloo was considered to be the first Nuyorican music which are the first generation of Puerto Ricans born and raised in New York “Bang Bang” played a big part linking Puerto Rican backgrounds with African influences that are prevalent in all aspects of social life, which includes their music and dance (Flores, “Cha-Cha with a Backbeat”, p. 78). The boogaloo was able to not only bring together African and Latinos together but was able to connect the disconnect between generations. Though not my personal favorite that boogaloo was able to engage this new generation by musically integrating traditional Latin music with popular pop music. Salsa personality Izza Sanabria considered the Latin boogaloo, “the greatest potential that we had to really cross over in terms of music” (Flores, “Cha-Cha with a Backbeat”, p. 82).
I believe that the boogaloo really helps people to better understand the culture context that is the Latin music field because of its rendition of popular sounds and funk rhythms. This started to begin far before the boogaloo’ percents with an inclusion on African- American r&b and soul sounds to jazz within the tradition Latin recordings (Flores, Cha-Cha with a backbeat, p. 82). This is another example of the evolution of Latin music and dance. The presence of Afro-American is still an influence but now so is popular American music and dance as well. It is interesting to think about because even today we find these integrations between genres. Today I am pretty sure you could find a mix of whatever genre you fancy. Do you like country and rap… well there is a genre for that! The only difference from today and the age of the boogaloo is the fact that the music in the 1960’s was more deliberate. When genres such as latin and funk were merged together there was still implements a lot of the Aftro-Cuban elements and rhythms (Flores, Cha-Cha with a backbeat, p. 86). From my very short experiences with the boogaloo, although I found this particular dance to be difficult I noticed that it is very expressive and I believe that it was perfect for this time and place.
