“Ballad Of Hank Williams“
If you knew me in high school, you probably heard this song dozens of times. It’s the closer on Bocephus’ 1981 album, The Pressure Is On. The album was a Number 6 country hit and produced two songs that would become Hank Williams Jr. staples: “All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down)” and “A Country Boy Can Survive”. I’d argue it was his last great album, though it’d be a couple more years before he descended fully into self-parody.
The guy singing with him is Don Helms, who played steel guitar for Hank’s Drifting Cowboys. Apart from ol’ Hank’s lonesome voice, Don’s crying steel guitar is probably the most striking thing about the man’s sound, and he played on 10 of Hank’s 11 Number One hits.
He also put up with Hank’s shit for quite a while, and ol’ Hank was a world-class causer of shit back in the day. The mention of working for Hank Jr. refers to his time with the Cheatin’ Hearts, Rockin’ Randall’s early backing band. One can’t help but hear a wee bit of venom in Don’s lyrics. The melody is from the famous Jimmie Driftwood song “The Battle of New Orleans,” made a hit by Johnny Horton and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
Dig it.

i hope you know this blog was the deciding factor on me watching all of danny phantom. also: man out of all the character dynamics you've drawn (and they are all very cute and good and interesting!!) i am obsessed with whatever the implied dynamic is with danny and jimmy. literally saw two posts and latched onto their friendship like driftwood in the middle of the ocean
danny and jimmy have an interesting dynamic that i really love to explore more but i am so limited to how i want to put my thoughts into words, the fact that you acknowledged them is extremely validating to me so ty!! in simpler terms i just like how in the games they seem to have an established mutual respect with eachother given how they're both equally capable with leading the team. i also see them having this sort of trust that they wouldn't have with their other friends but not because they're close, rather its the kind of trust that you'd put on someone that you know would have the best judgement, if that makes sense? i hope im making sense but anyways this reminds me i dont think i ever posted this sketch here since its kinda related to what im trying to convey
anyways sorry if i was rambling but tysm again for the ask!!

write post about the tulpar crew working at like waffle house also you opinion on what brand of soap they use
Soap first:
Anya washes with dove bar soap first, cucumber cool moisture. Uses one of the Neutrogena liquid soaps like the brown rain bath. Unscented lotions or balms and a very light perfume, thinking something vanilla like or a shea butter. Over the counter cheap perfume that’s a bit to alcoholish but it suits her in a clinical way.
Curly is like high maintenance shower guy. Started because an ex put him onto it and now it's a routine. Special face soap and exfoliating hand brush, bodywash that is way too expensive but he feels dirty without it. Has like a lot of serums and a body oil lotion combo that he has that makes him smell really nice. All of it is uncommon and you need to go to a specific place to get them. Not excessive but he starts tweaking if he runs out of one mid routine.
Daisuke is just as bad as Curly. His bathroom looks like a bath and bodyworks display front. Has a bath bomb for the day, uses a like honey dew mask and soaks. Long as showers and has a teeth cleaning kit. He stare at 9 and isn’t done until 11. Cherry Blossom lotion you can smell him a miles away before you see his ass.
Jimmy uses either unscented dial or Irish springs. Maybe even like the aqua bars from dollar tree. No towel or luffa or anything just rubs his on his hands then washes with the lather. None descript deodorant, mixes with his smell in a weird way. Is the type to do it all at once in the shower, teeth, hair, nails. It’s like all jacked in a way. Shaves his razor blade rarely but thinks his shave is clean always.
Swansea uses like man scents. Sandalwood and driftwood soaps standard rag. Likes to stand in the water, cold shower guy surprisingly, his wife hates it, she never wants to shower with him. No cologne and uses like Old spice because it reminds him of his youth in a nostalgic way. Smells like old man naturally so he just smells like a freshly reupholstered chair and sweat.
Waffle House time:
Anya is the hostess super good at her job but has issues because the waiter is shit and the kitchen is run worse than dashcon. Has ignored a family to rearrange one stack of menues and trips on the grease stains a lot.
Daisuke is the waiter and bus boy and tends to talk and forget about his tables. Once sat and ate off a customers plate with them, whether they enjoyed the company or not doesn’t matter this is a Waffle House
Curly is the manager and is usually dealing with complaints and files in the office. Has had to facilitate more fights after Jimmy was hired but business has improved subsequently…
You’ll see him crying in a booth but he’s real good at acting normal for the customer. Sits with costumers to and it’s awkward cause he’s way too nice to be there.
Jimmy’s the supervisor and cook. He makes the shittiest food that only tastes good if ur coming in shitfaced at like 2 am. Hears a complaint and comes out grease pan in hand ready to “take criticism”
Swansea works there but what he does is between him and god. Sits in a booth playing solitaire and if you come and ask him for anything he mentions how I he did his time for this shift and he’s on an extended break. Treats the fights like a show and dinner.
They stay open even if they actually reach Waffle House’s huricxan threshold
If Curly or Swansea come in to break up a fight everyone scatters like rats
They all chain smoke and hide it from each other. Only Curly really cares because someone (Jimmy) is smoking in the kitchen. Yes he’s blowing it onto the food.
The crash was Jimmy putting ice in the air fryer and it did hurt Curly but like he’s regularly fine they just put him in the office cause there’s still the hurricane outside
I feel like they are in like West Virginia idk just seems isolated enough. I like the idea this could only happen if they are all southern
The restaurant is infested with many things but the health inspectors can’t rip the B rating off so they just say fuck it
Combined with the soap I think the safest thing to eat at the Waffle House is like ice from the bin but by the time it gets to ur table it likely has like mold spores on it.
#mouthwashing#ask#catstew#I think Jimmy can cook better but he’s being on brand#he’s taken a customers plate and ate it himself#I’m not taggin everyone

Seven Seas of Chaos and Mystery - ScottJimmy
This was once upon a time going to be longer, but I had and still have too many projects going on so for the foreseeable future it's going to be here. Maybe one day…
But here are some notes I had:
The Bad Boys are pirates converted into seafaring adventurers/mercenaries/ explorers three-man crew of the Mistake. On one of their trips, they save a merling, Scar, from the aftermath of a pirate-navy battle happening over his home. When they hear he knows their old captain - the famous pirate Martyn, captain of The Littlewood, they decide to let him stay with them so that they may help him look for what happened to Martyn. No one has heard of the pirate in several years but the navy is still looking for him so he must be alive somewhere.
On the way Scott just about might fall in love with the ship's doctor and cook - Jimmy.
Joel is in charge of the 'crew' of driftwood golems and Grian is the 'captain' and navigator.
The last thing Scott remembered from before passing out was explosions and the smell of gunpowder and fire and screams. Human screams. And then nothing... And now there was the pain. Making him sit up with a growl and look around the room in panic. Where was he? It looked like a medical facility, and there was a pretty human...
"Slow, slow, it's okay, I'm a friend," the very pretty human said, turning to face Scott with his arms raised.
"Where am I?" Scott asked, glancing at the door. Escaping was probably a bad idea, he had no idea of the layout or how many or how dangerous humans there were onboard. The gentle swaying made him assume they were still on the sea. That was good. He'd be in big trouble if he were on land now. Really big trouble.
"We're onboard the Mistake... A ship me and my friends travel on, we found you near a battle between pirates and marines," the man explained, calmly, not moving an inch towards Scott. "I'm Jimmy. I promise we have no intention of hurting you but as this ship's doctor, I'd recommend you stay here until you've recovered. You do heal fast but your wounds are still pretty bad," he added as Scott thought what to do now.
"Okay, I'll stay for now," Scott agreed, he could easily escape if the crew tried doing anything shady. "You can check my wounds," he added and tried to relax as Jimmy approached with fresh bandages and other medical supplies.
To his credit, Jimmy was very careful when removing the bandages and checking stitches and cleaning wounds that didn't need those. And was even prettier up close. Scott could not fight the urge to brush some errand hairs off his face. To get this one endeared to him for security he told himself.
"Can I get some fresh air once you're done? It will help me heal faster," Scott asked just as Jimmy was about to ask him what he was doing.
"As long as you can actually walk and don't plan to do anything harder than walking and let me stay with you just in case, I don't see any reason to force you to stay here," Jimmy said with a tiny smile. "Though, I probably should get you a fresh shirt before we go anywhere."
Scott didn't really need any shirts but whatever got him some good proper fresh sea air. "Want to keep the show all to yourself," he joked, not quite meaning to say anything but Jimmy's blush getting darker was worth the slip-up.
"Wha... No, it's to keep the bandages safe," Jimmy stammered but his hands stayed steady as he finished the bandaging.
Scott chuckled a bit. Pretty and cute. What an interesting human. He thought as Jimmy left to get Scott some fresh clothes. He didn't lock the door, not that Scott had any intention of leaving the room. The cute doctor gave him no reason and as he already thought, there was a chance he'd get lost or run into someone he shouldn't. He did decide that if he ended up having to sink the Mistake, he'd keep Jimmy as a cute souvenir. Scott was familiar with multiple ways to keep him from drowning. But for now, while waiting he checked his fins and scales. The fins were mostly fine with a few little scuffs and scratches. His scales though were probably what worried Jimmy the most. And they honestly worried Scott too. Could he even shift to his other form or was he stuck in land mode? He could still swim like this but not as fast as he would prefer to.
"I'm sorry, I don't know much about treating merling," Jimmy apologised as he caught Scott inspecting his wounds when he came back. "And here, should keep the bandages protected," he added and passed Scott some clothes. "I'll wait outside..." he mumbled and left before Scott could mess with him anymore.
With a sigh, the merling inspected the clothes. They were likely Jimmy's considering the light blue of the shirt the doctor wore and what Scott was given matched pretty closely. And even though Jimmy was not the most built individual he was a fair bit taller than Scott. Most of merling's height was their tail, okay, and if that was out he'd be the tall one. But at the moment Jimmy being taller was a good thing. It meant his clothes were just big enough on Scott to not bother his fins.
Moving was a different thing. It hurt a... bit and Scott maybe thought about calling for help a couple of times. He didn't but trying to walk was a big failure that ended with him on the floor and Jimmy rushing in to help him
With Jimmy's help. After some convincing that fresh air would help. Scott finally got his fresh sea breeze. And it did make him feel a lot better. Better enough so he could probably stand on his own but he kept that to himself. He enjoyed Jimmy's help. So instead he looked around the Mistake. The pirate flag instantly caught his attention. He was about to ask about it when the ship shook.
"Hide under the deck," Jimmy said already moving up the stairs next to the door. Scott of course ignored his 'request' and followed.
"...did the Marines find us? How the hell are we..." sandy blonde, a short man with a colourful feather in his hat. The captain? Yelled, clearly panicking as he, Jimmy and one more, also shorter man, stared at three apparently marine ships in the distance.
Scott heard about marines. Martyn didn't like them. Jimmy didn't seem to like them. Martyn, back then. And Jimmy now was nice to Scott. And he had a vague memory of those sails from before he passed out. Scott did not like marines. So he leaned on the railing, glaring at the distant ships, ignoring Jimmy trying to pull him away. "Owen? Could you help me a little?" he asked his friend.
Soon marines had different problems from the Mistake. Tentacles of a massive kraken. Owen. Scott's good friend.
As soon as marines were 'occupied' Mistake's crew came to life. Literally. The other short pirate, brown hair with a green streak summoned kind of clones of himself out of nothing. The clones moved to get the ship moving away as fast as it could as Scott waved at the kraken.
"Wha... Where... Scott?" Jimmy asked staring at the marines trying to flee the kraken.
"Owen. My friend," Scott grinned. "Do you know pirate Martyn? He's a friend," Scott smiled turning to watch the commotion on the Mistake.
"He's our old captain, actually, we're kind of looking for him," the captain said. "Want to tag along?" he asked with clear ulterior motives. Scott was aware that being able to call Owen and his other friends for help was very interesting to humans.
"Sure," he shrugged. He was a big merling. A wounded one yes, but he could take care of himself. And if he was to sink the Mistake he'd like to keep Jimmy. He was pretty cute for a human after all. And he was a bit curious about where did Martyn ran away from him to.

273: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band // Will the Circle Be Unbroken
Will the Circle Be Unbroken The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band 1972, United Artists
Who can endure a sentimentalist music critic? Still, this morning anyway, my heart’s fit to weep over a one-hundred-and-ten minutes of exultant roots music and a beautiful idea executed to perfection. The notion behind Will the Circle Be Unbroken was to use the Dirt Band, a crew of talented longhairs from California, as a bridge between the trendy country rock of the day and the genre’s pantheon of avuncularly voiced pioneers. (And I guess in Maybelle Carter’s case ‘aunticularly voiced.’) Many of these sorts of intergenerational tribute projects give me queasy tasting notes of hapless arts council funding or the rap number from Walk Hard, but somehow this triple LP from the heart of rock’s imperial phase manages to be both reverent of traditional country and bluegrass history and present these genres as living organisms.
youtube
The Dirt Band are joined by a Field of Dreams cast of legends, plus an adjunct wing of ace players like fiddle genius Vassar Clements, and while the Dirties sneak in one original the focus is squarely on the standards. None of these takes supplant the originals, but the recording fidelity, superlative playing, and warm communal energy make for lovely alternatives. Merle Travis’s “Dark as a Dungeon,” one of the greatest folk and country songs of the century, has never sounded more lovely or doomed; Doc Watson gives Jimmie Driftwood’s “Tennessee Stud” a broad-shouldered boisterousness; Earl Scruggs and the Dirt Band’s John McEuen present the classic fiddle reel “Soldier’s Joy” as an infectious banjo duel.
Many of the songs include snatches of studio chatter between the band and their guests: Mother Maybelle sounds like the sweetest old thing imaginable; Roy Acuff comes off like as much of a pompous Haven Hamilton-type as I’d always heard he was; Jimmy Martin gives elderly prospector cricket. The tapes are even rolling for the first meeting of guitar legends Travis and Watson, who have an adorably awkward little chat before declaring themselves “buddies.” These peeks into the process are part of Circle’s artifice, but it feels like an honest attempt to capture the historic nature of the summit. The album rounds off with nods to the deep past in the form of a number of Carter family cuts, an homage to bluegrass father “Uncle” Dave Macon, and a group singalong of the spiritual “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” But then, right there at the end, we get 17-year-old Randy Scruggs performing a solo instrumental take on Joni Mitchell’s 1968 “Both Sides, Now.” The symbolism of the teenaged son of Earl Scruggs playing such a recent (and aptly-named) tune is clear, quietly closing the circle between past and present, a pact sealed.

Evening! I come bearing some humor, song ─ and tall tale. Let me know what you think of it, and how you'd rate it!
The Good
-It's a fun song and I like this style of music and I'm glad it exists
The Less-Good
-His voice is too nasally for my tastes, and flattens out the words so they just flow over my brain without letting the story really sink in.
#answered asks#this is also how i learned that 'the battle of new orleans' was not a johnny horton original#and that there were several extra verses they were hiding from us#the extra verses were very fun#unfortunately his voice kind of glossed over the story part so it wasn't as memorable#as johnny's version with its more dynamic vocals#this was very fun thank you for sending!

I finally screencapped my DVD of Driftwood (1997) so I'll be able to make some high-res gifs soon, keep an eye out for them!!! :-) This is my favorite thing Jimmy does in the whole movie because when I broke my ankle last summer this is exactly how I got around for a month
#the way he hops out of frame 😭#driftwood#seeing this in HD for the first time instead of a fuzzy youtube upload... lives were changed#my favorite underrated JS movie. like yes it's kind of bad. but I'm kind of in love with it

Hello! As promised, you are given one song, this one by American composer and folk song collector Jimmie Driftwood. There have been many Irish recordings, most notably, this one.
If you'd rather not use Spotify, you can find the YouTube recording here.
Anyway, I'd love to hear yours thoughts; is it weird? Have you ever heard it before, and most importantly: How do rate it? (I'll come up with a standardized scale later, the blog is still very fresh, after all).
Hi! I really enjoyed it!!! It sounds like something my brother would listen to, I wonder if he's heard it before 🤔 anyway, the story was great and I liked the music and how it was sang. Sung? One of those. I'd rate it a... Maybe an 8/10
