Jim West's Suit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Robert Conrad’s finely tailored Suits, featuring the smart-looking bolero jacket and colorful vest, were an important aspect of James West’s character. The fact that President Grant recruited West to serve as his agent in the field meant maintaining a convincing cover. So the government set him up to be a fancy, high-living gentleman from the East, who traveled the country at his leisure in his private railroad car. West’s classy attire went a long way toward establishing this image.
"The jacket also served a practical function: Hidden behind the left lapel was a small pocket in which West kept a picklock, and at the back of the jacket was another pocket that held a throwing knife. This jacket, along with its hidden devices, was used throughout the series.
The tight-fitting pants that matched West’s jacket posed a special problem on the series due to the extensive stunt work performed by Conrad. 'My pants, which were designed by a woman, were always splitting because they were too tight,” recalled Conrad. “They were always saying, "Okay, how many pairs of pants is he going to go through today?"'
"The seat of Conrad’s trousers bears the scars of needlework repairs—a fitting testament to the daily rough-and-tumble activities of the wild, wild West."

Wild Wild West, you never cease to impress me with your dedication to tying up Bob Conrad and/or getting him naked
(Can we blame Angela Lansbury's son for this? Is he the mastermind here? I choose to think it was.)

I love seeing Al's band members in the background of the music videos. They feel like irl easter eggs for dedicated fans. (Most non-fans don't even know he HAS a band.)
Also pointing at a random guy and shouting "JIM," "JON," "STEVE," and "RUBÉN" is just really fun in concept.

When I say I was not PREPARED. I mean, I had seen gif sets of this clip before but I was NOT prepared for the AUDIO. Oh my god poor Artie!
The Night of The Death Masks really was Artemus's terrible no good very bad day. He gets betrayed, drugged, kidnapped, shot in the leg and then is led to believe he killed his boyfriend best friend!
The dropping the gun and then to his knees in despair, the terrible little "oh no's" and the way his voice breaks when he says "Jim". The closest we get to this level of sad before then I think is in Druid's Blood where Artemus is very visibly trying not to break down while Jim is seemingly gravely injured and comatose.
But what REALLY gets me in this scene is the sobbing, which is wild considering by that point Artie knows Jim isn't dead! A testament to how good of an actor Artie/Ross is!
Tumblr media
I mean it's really difficult to get crying/sobbing to sound right when you aren't actually crying let alone look real and he does both. He's actually shaking and everything, you can feel it, I feel like some actors even today forget we cry with our whole bodies, and he does.
That's really impressive. Especially considering the fact that art hadn't exactly been perfected for TV or film yet. Male characters in particular considering how such intense displays of sadness were rare (unless somebody actually died) and even then it was kinda hit or miss at times. I'm just so impressed.
Acting (good acting anyway) tends to lead you to pull from real life experiences to put emotion into your performance. I can only imagine Artie just sort of, unpaused the emotional reaction he was having when he really thought Jim was dead in order to convince Stark and Co that he still believed it.
It would've been really easy for them to have played this scene for laughs. To let Artie play up the crying as a comedic bit, but neither Ross nor the director took that angle I really love that.
The emotional depth of Jim and Artemus's relationship is really well displayed in how this scene was done. Even if part of it was a ploy and they jump back into the action-adventure shenanigans right after. It's really well balanced, and in a time where it feels like a lot of TV writing has lost touch with when to be tender/intense and when to be funny this scene just really stuck out to me.
I really do love this show.

Jim West's Train
The Gold Sofa
Tumblr media
“The private railroad car loaned to James West by the U.S. government should have had its own billing as the third star of the series. Built at a cost of $35,000, the train set appears in every episode. Serving as the agents’ home, as well as their mobile base of operations, the train contains a lab, where Artemus creates his various gadgets and disguises, and the main living quarters—attractively furnished in golds and greens—where the men conduct business, as well as entertain.
“The gold sofa was a key piece of furniture on that set. During the run of the series, its luxurious, golden cushions were enjoyed by such varied personalities as the president of the United States, members of royalty, and foreign dignitaries, as well as an assortment of criminal masterminds who invariably found their way onto West’s private car.
“Both Jim and Artie would probably agree, however, that the sofa had its most memorable use at the end of each assignment—at the tag of nearly every Wild Wild West episode—when two lovely ladies would curl up on this sofa in the arms of our heroes. The theme music would swell as the train chugged along the tracks into the distance, the two agents enjoying a well-earned rest from having, once more, saved out great nation from the forces of evil.”
