Catch the Intense Action from the Uncivil War 3 Outlaw Race
The small tire drag racing scene has progressed a lot over the last decade. It was once the Outlaw 10.5 guys who stole the show, but the class was all but phased out for smaller tires, stricter rules, and even more intense competition. Brainerd Motorsports Park was one of the first tracks in the Southeast to pay big money for outlaw racing way back in the 1990’s, and it’s still continuing that heritage today with monthly heads up races at the historic track. Even though the track was built in 1963, it has been updated to modern standards with a full concrete surface, concrete barriers, covered stands and more. Steven Farrow, Ron Newman and crew have poured their hearts and pocketbooks into this track to make it a premier racing facility.
Brainerd Motorsports Park, along with Scooter Trower, organizer of the Southern Drag Radial Association put together monthly heads up races, with classes that range from entry-level street car competition to the nationally-recognized Limited Drag Radial category. For the Uncivil War event in October 2017, the event featured Limited Drag Radial, Limited Street, Easy Street, Bang Street (manual transmission class), as well as 4.70, 5.70, 6.0 and 7.0 indexes.
We caught the action, which included a Friday night testing and qualifying session, and then a full day of action on Saturday, with two additional rounds of qualifying, followed by eliminations. The weather was outstanding, offering cool air and excellent track conditions, which was a nice way to cap off the Southern Drag Radial Association season. Take a look at our highlights to see the tire smoking, wheelstanding action from the Uncivil War event at Brainerd Motorsports Park in Ringgold, Georgia.
There was no shortage of traction at Brainerd Motorsports Park for the Uncivil War race. Rodney Jones hangs ‘em high on this qualifying pass in his Easy Street-prepared Nova. Rodney said, “We were only leaving at 50 percent”, referring to the percentage of nitrous on the progressive controller.
While the race is geared toward drag radial cars, it also featured four index classes, including the popular 4.70 class. These fiberglass-bodied cars are fun to watch, and Dustin Martin’s 1957 Chevy is a class favorite. He won the $3,000 check with a 4.711 in the finals.
Jim Brackett’s Limited Drag Radial Camaro is a crowd pleaser and an eardrum abuser with its blown and alcohol-injected big block with fender-exit headers.
Long time Mopar buddies, Brad Shultis (near lane) and BoBo Keyes (far lane) battle it out in qualifying for the Limited Drag Radial class. Brad’s Duster features a Procharged Hemi, while BoBo’s Duster has a nitrous-assisted Wedge motor.
A legend in the outlaw drag racing world, Shane Stack came up from Alabama and took home the money in Limited Drag Radial. Shane’s twin turbo Monte Carlo is insanely clean.
Progressive nitrous controllers got a workout at the Uncivil War event.
While Billy Smith isn’t pedaling through a giant wheelstand in this photo, he’s been on the back bumper more times than he can remember, especially here at his home track. He took home a holeshot win in the Limited Street finals with his turbocharged Mustang.
Adam Turner took home the East Street win with his turbocharged Pontiac Firebird. The Woodstock, Georgia based racer clicked off a 5.17-second eighth-mile elapsed time in the finals.
Father and son, Dennis and Spencer Smith campaign this Plymouth Duster in the 7.0 index class. Spencer handled the driving duties at this event, taking home runner up money, with a 7.037 in the finals against Chase Hasty.
Jeeps aren’t common at the drag strip, but Garrett Beaver’s 1973 Jeep CJ5 looks right at home. He ran in the 7.0 index class at this event, but typically runs street car type events, as the Chevrolet power plant is tame enough for street use.
Our picture doesn’t do it justice, but Jarred Hicks power-wheelied his Procharged Mustang during Friday night’s qualifying session. His Limited Street-prepared Mustang features a blown 347ci small block Ford and he ran a personal best 4.85 in the finals on Saturday.
