(The Immortal Hulk # 0, November 2020 )
RATING: 10 ☢️ RADIATION INDUCED PSYCHOANALYSES OUT OF 10
This was such a fantastically awesome idea! The reprints of Bruce's backstory snippets from '85 and '97 were such a brilliant idea to show the consistency and legacy of the character. More importantly, it gave me some insight into elements that have fallen by the wayside. I consider myself as a massive fan of the Hulk yet have never seen or heard reference to the Triad until reading this. Bruce is constantly one of the go-to examples for ~vaguely defined and poorly represented mental problems~ and the approximation of Goblin to Id, Glow to Super-Ego, and Guardian to Ego (if I remember my undergrad psych classes) is a neat visual shorthand. This issue serves as such a nice condensed look at how Hulk and Bruce have been each other's enemy since the beginning of the character, and yet there is no worse foe to them than Brian Banner. I also think it's wild that apparently Hulk developed the ability to see into the astral realm out of sheer terror of his father returning. The fact that this is one of the best Hulk stories I've ever read and yet there is no super-powered brawl really cements how much I love the character. Finally, the tiny bit of in-continuity framing it has on either side of the classic reprints keeps the story fresh and ready for future developments, giving reason for showing the loathing between Brian and Bruce across the decades.
FAVORITE: The Gamma Bomb was designed as a casualty-free weapon which I've never seen alluded to anywhere else but I think is just so awesome and in character for Bruce
Tumblr media
LEAST FAVORITE: The realism of toxic family drama trauma makes me wildly uncomfortable and I'm so fortunate to have not experienced any on the level as this
