Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train is centered on a myth still so potent that it can draw young Japanese tourists from Yokohama to Memphis to visit Sun Records and Graceland, but also so porous that Jarmusch can peer through it -- like the ghost of Elvis that visits Luisa -- and glimpse some of the racial injustice that elevated Elvis to superstardom and left black musicians like Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Rufus Thomas (both of whom have roles in the film) struggling for recognition. If the film's three interlocking stories feel too much like a familiar contrivance, it's worth remembering that Mystery Train was made five years before Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994) and probably influenced it. The first segment, with the young tourists Jun (Masatoshi Nagase) and Mitsuko (Yuki Kodo) providing a decidedly original point of view on a country they view through the lens of rock 'n' roll, is the best. The middle one, in which the newly widowed Luisa (Nicoletta Braschi) drifts toward the same hotel where Jun and Mitsuko are staying and winds up sharing a room with the frenetic Dee Dee (Elizabeth Bracco), is the weakest, particularly Luisa's ghost-sighting. The third section, with the wonderfully eccentric trio of Joe Strummer, Rick Aviles, and Steve Buscemi, ties everything together, but fortunately it doesn't do it so neatly that it feels phony. And the intermediary scenes with Hawkins as desk clerk and Cinqué Lee as bellhop keep everything in the skewed perspective that the film needs. Robby Müller's cinematography treats the characters in the film's three episodes as only transients through the city: He and Jarmusch often frame a scene, like the downtown buildings rising in the distance beyond vacant lots, and have the characters walk through the frame. The boarded-up storefronts and empty streets have an ironic permanence to them that the characters lack, so that the central character in Mystery Train is Memphis itself, seen here as bleak and grimy but still charged with some of the vital spark that gave rise to so much music. Jarmusch wrote the screenplay before he ever visited Memphis, but he found exactly what he anticipated there.

‘Belfast,’ ’The Quiet Girl’ Among 2022 European Film Awards Craft Winners
Oscar hopefuls 'EO' and 'All Quiet on the Western Front' also received honors in the EFA craft categories announced Wednesday.
Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast, Jerzy Skolimowski’s donkey drama EO and Colm Bairéad’s Irish period drama piece The Quiet Girl are among the winners of the 2022 European Film Awards in the craft categories.
Belfast, a poignant and sentimental black-and-white portrayal of Branagh’s childhood growing up in Northern Ireland, won two EFAs, with Jim Clay taking best European production design and Charlotte Walter winning for best European costume design.

Kate McCullough won best European cinematography for her lensing of The Quiet Girl — Ireland’s submission for the 2023 best international film Oscar. The film depicts a shy and withdrawn child who begins to emerge from her shell during a summer stay with relatives in rural Ireland.
Pawel Mykietyn won best European score for his music to EO, Poland’s Academy Award hopeful, which follows the adventures of a donkey traveling across Poland and Italy. Another Oscar hopeful, German WWI drama All Quiet on the Western Front, won best European makeup and hair for Heike Merker and best European visual effects for the team of Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller and Markus Frank.
The European editing prize went to Özcan Vardar and Eytan İpeker for Burning Days — a Turkish drama about an idealistic young prosecutor trying his first murder investigation. And Michelangelo Frammartino’s The Hole, which follows the adventures of a team of Italian spelunkers in the 1960s, won best European sound for its team of Simone Paolo Olivero, Paolo Benvenuti, Benni Atria, Marco Saitta, Ansgar Frerich and Florian Holzner.
The craft honors, called the Excellence Awards, were announced Wednesday and will be presented at the 2022 European Film Awards’ gala ceremony in Reykjavík, Iceland, on Dec. 10.

Lina Allemano — Canons (Lumo)

A canon is a compositional technique involving the statement and restatement of a melody with controlled variations. Familiar examples include rounds such as “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and Johann Pachelbel’s famous composition. In this recording, trumpeter and composer (and bandleader and label-runner) Lina Allemano experiments with the form in a set of small groups consisting of trumpet and one to three other voices, with cello by Peggy Lee, clarinet by Brodie West, bass by Rob Clutton, synth by Ryan Driver, guitar by Tim Postgate, trombone by Matthias Müller, and/or trumpet overdubs by Allemano herself; four other tracks include “live-processing/ effects” by Mike Smith. Allemano has worked with these collaborators before, and they commit fully to the project, which incorporates their improvisation into her compositions.
Especially given the variety in the instrumentation, each track has a distinctive feel. Opener “3 Trumpet Canon” begins with a classical-sounding flourish and ends in whispery breaths, while “Bobby’s Canon,” a lovely blend trumpet, cello, and clarinet, ebbs and flows through its variations. “Butterscones,” the first of the two tracks with Clutton, Driver, and Postgate, begins not unlike the opener but moves into atonal territory; the second, “Twinkle Tones,” begins in atonal territory and becomes more traditional-sounding near the end. Similarly, the sleek harmonies of the track with Müller are interrupted by a noisier middle section. The tracks with Smith represent an incarnation of BLOOP, his ongoing duo project with Allemano (Bill Meyer reviewed their 2021 release for Dusted). His real-time manipulation of her trumpet seems to stretch the canon form to its limits, with noise and effects serving to refract musical ideas often expressed in extended notes.
Canons is, according to the liner notes, the product of a kind of compositional game, and that lightheartedness pervades the album, in contrast with the more somber, Covid-focused Pipe Dream released earlier this year (which I reviewed in May), and this year marks the twentieth anniversary of Lumo, the label that Allemano founded and runs to release her music. So, this is a good opportunity to recognize her contributions to the scenes in Toronto and Berlin in particular and modern jazz in general. By providing an alternative to the corporate music industry, the hard work of Allemano and other musician-entrepreneurs such as, to choose a random example from the world of jazz, Whit Dickey’s Tao Forms, helps to ensure that adventurous and uncompromising music continues to be made and those with diverse tastes such as the readers of Dusted continue to have access to it.
