19. 5 book recs
Memoirs of a Polar Bear by Yoko Tawada. 2016, historical fantasy. The tale of three polar bears (a grandmother, a mother, and a son) who are skilled writers and performers in Germany, the third of whom is the famous Knut of the Berlin Zoo.
How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by Saša Stanišić. 2006, historical fiction/magical realism. A novel with autobiographical elements about a young boy whose family flees Bosnia for Germany during the Bosnian War and his attempts to make sense of it all.
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. 1959, post-apocalyptic science fiction. Centuries in the future in the aftermath of a 20th-century nuclear war that devastated the planet, an order of monks is dedicated to preserving the pre-apocalyptic scientific knowledge that has since been suppressed by the rest of society.
Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. 2018, short story collection. Mostly speculative fiction & often dealing with themes of racism, capitalism, and violence. My personal favorite stories: "Zimmer Land," "Friday Black," "How to Sell a Jacket as Told by IceKing," and "Through the Flash."
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa. 2012, magical realism. A cat and his human go on a journey to find the cat a new home for reasons the cat doesn't understand. Narrated by the cat.

I realize this is a really broad ask, but I'm in the mood to read more romance-y books and that's something I don't usually look for (my genre choices go for things labeled sci-fi/fantasy/spy thriller/historical drama before it gets called romance even if that's also a thing in the book) so do people (@jiggit or @tender-perennial ?) have recs I can use as a starting place?
#books#book recs#yes this is vague and broad and the book equivalent of opening and shutting the fridge hoping that the food i want magically appears

@jiggit i looked up that section of the 九辩 in my translated copy of the Chuci, here's Gopal Sukhu's translation:
Alone in the boundless wilds, with no way out of sorrow, lives a beautiful woman whose heart was not glad to leave her family in a distant land to come here, a stranger, and now, a vagabond, where will she go? She longs for you only, Lord. You cannot change her. If this you refuse to know, what can she do? Her resentment builds, Her longing deepens— Her heart so vexed by dread, she neglects her food. I desire but one meeting to speak this thing on my mind, but they are so at odds, my heart and yours, that when I left in the carriage you readied, only to return, you would not see me. It cut me inside, as I leaned on the carriage wall, and sighed through its lattice window, and so many tears crossed down my face, they wet the carriage rail. I rage that I cannot stop it. I am delirious, lost! How do I end this hidden misery? My frenzied heart pounds, but always for you.
#poetry#chuci#song yu#(attributed to)#tired now from work but like. gestures. interesting stuff going on with pronouns here#and the. almost run-on sentence quality of some of the verses

#cumplane elevates scum villain above the average isekai because it is a commentary on author-reader relationships #and its existence hence casts a metanarrative eye on every aspect of the text #and it's funny as shit #in 'fixing' the narrative sqq not only adjusts canon for coherence and emotional pacing but also brings the creator-fan experience #from a place of toxicity to an intertwined collaboration #above all scum villain is a paean to the editorial process #but also a fictionalised rendering of the basis of reader response theory (via @jiggit)
I think, on some level, that Shen Yuan is like enrichment for Airplane Bro's enclosure. I think Airplane Bro kind of fucking LOVES having this guy around. Like, I do think their relationship is nuanced, weird and full of contradictions and not always good for them, but I also think that some chaotic part of Shang Qinghua honestly likes having his #1 hater weirdo running around completely fucking up his world.
Shen Qingqiu, grabbing Shang Qinghua by the shoulders: "Why didn't anyone TELL ME that Binghe is GAY NOW?! I'm going to die because of MONSTER DICK?!?!?!"
Shang Qinghua: (internally, probably only half-consciously) "Incredible. Amazing. How did I live without you? You torture me with your bullshit. You complete me in every possible way. I think we might be soulmates and we should make out about it. I hate you. I love you. You mean nothing to me and everything to me. This isn't your story and you stole it from me. I wrote this for you without even knowing you existed. You are a fascinating mystery that I will never solve. I will throw you under the bus at the first opportunity and yet I can't stop risking my life to help you. Your stupid game of gay murder chicken with my emotionally and mentally unstable protagonist is going to destroy the world and kill us all and I've never felt more alive. You have changed me as a person. Let's do this forever."
Shang Qinghua: (out loud) "Lol, sucks to be you, bro. At least you can get laid."

I had also been helping Ratthi with the data analysis for his survey reports, and he was trying to convince me that could be a job I could do for other researchers. Which, sure, I mean, it could. If I wanted to be almost as bored as when a lot of my job had been standing in one place unable to move and staring at a wall. It wasn't boring with Ratthi, but not all researchers were going to be so happy about the reports we constructed, or get me to go with them to live performances in the Station's theater.

I love Terry Pratchett so much. He literally saw Harry Potter and said "I could do better." And instead of writing a book with bigger and better magic, he wrote a book where the smaller the magic is, the more magical it felt. And next to none of it was ACTUAL magic. Being a witch didn't really mean being able to cast spells; being a witch meant listening. Critical thinking. Speaking up for others. Leading with humility. Serving the community.
He saw a whole generation who suddenly desperately wanted to be witches and wizards, and instead of selling them merchandise to help feed that fantasy he gave them an example they could actually follow.
I'm going to drop a long, but I think beautiful quote here.
"You hardly ever saw Granny Aching indoors in the spring and summer. She spent most of the year sleeping in the old wheeled hut, which could be dragged across the downs after the flocks. But the first time Tiffany could remember seeing the old woman in the farmhouse, she was kneeling in front of the fire, putting a dead lamb in the big black oven.
Tiffany had screamed and screamed. And Granny had gently picked her up, a little awkwardly, and sat her on her lap and shushed her and called her ‘my little jiggit’, while on the floor her sheepdogs, Thunder and Lightning, watched her in doggish amazement. Granny wasn’t particularly at home around children, because they didn’t baa.
When Tiffany had stopped crying out of sheer lack of breath, Granny had put her down on the rug and opened the oven, and Tiffany had watched the lamb come alive again.
When Tiffany got a little older, she found out that ‘jiggit’ meant twenty in the Yan Tan Tethera, the ancient counting language of the shepherds. The older people still used it when they were counting things they thought of as special. She was Granny Aching’s twentieth grandchild.
And when she was older she also understood all about the warming oven, which never got more than, well, warm. Her mother would let the bread dough rise in it, and Ratbag the cat would sleep in it, sometimes on the dough. It was just the place to revive a weak lamb that had been born on a snowy night and was near death from the cold. That was how it worked. No magic at all. But that time it had been magic. And it didn’t stop being magic just because you found out how it was done."
This book, The Wee Free Men, was my favourite book as a kid. And I didn't want to be Hermione, I wanted to be Tiffany. And now, I've been re-reading it so I can introduce it to my husband, and I realise that I did try to chase that example. I think maybe a lot of what I've done and who I've become in real life* could be traced back to reading this book when I was little. And re-reading it is bringing me a lot of joy because I remember sometimes getting bored by the flashbacks to granny Aching, because I wanted to know what happened next. But now they feel like poems that make the book so much stronger.
*please don't take my blog as a reflection of what I'm saying here, oh my god
Discworld is so delightful because you get lines like "When banks fail, it is seldom bankers who starve" except it's spoken by a 7 foot tall sentient clay statue named Pump 19 and directed to a man whose name is Moist von Lipwig
