I honestly wouldn't care about generative text and images (aka "AI") if it wasn't such an immediate and pressing threat. Artists are already losing their livelihoods, and extremely dangerous things are being published using this technology that are just flat out incorrect. It's bleeding out into everything and it's unavoidable. The enshittification of everything is escalating because of it. People are having to legally defend that their faces, bodies, and voices belong to them.

But it didn't have to be this way. No one cared when AI was this imperfect thing that generated surreal landscapes and uncanny character faces. It could have just been another internet toy to make DnD character icons and YouTube Poop. Idealistically, it could have been a force for good, improved on consensually obtained data to make technology better.

But capitalism doesn't want things to be better. Capitalism doesn't want innovation. Capitalism wants to sell as much as possible while paying people nothing. So the people sponsoring and paying for AI are doing it to kill jobs, steal from artists, make existing tools worse, and make our whole lives worse.
