You watch as the pink-haired Foxian in front of you stirs his ramen pot, his movements graceful and practiced. Jiaoqiu ladles the broth into a deep bowl, then collects some cold rice noodles from another bowl to the side. He stirs the noodles into the bowl gently, letting the broth heat up and cook the noodles, then slides the bowl of noodles across the counter to you.
 "Just as you usually enjoy it, m'lady." He bows, smiling charmingly at you as he does.
"Thank you, Jiao," you say, pulling the bowl towards yourself. The steam of the broth wafts up to you, hot and heavy, giving you a taste of what’s to come. Just as you raise a clump of noodles to your lips with your chopsticks, someone slides into the seat besides yours. Someone dangerously familiar.
"Well, well, well. Look who we have here!"
"If it isn't Sampo Koski," you say, lowering your chopsticks.
 "The one and only! You know it, baby." Sampo grins. "And don't you look absolutely ravishing today, miss." He picks your hand up and kisses the back of it, earning himself a giggle from you. "How has this beautiful lady been?"
You shrug, giving him the usual answer. Fine, good, nothing much has happened in your life. And Sampo isn't the type you'd share juicy gossip with anyway. He’s prone to selling that kind of information off if it suits him.
"I didn't expect to see you here in the Xianzhou," you say.
"My business takes me places. You know how it is." He winks.
Just as you’re about to mention how thick he’s laying it on, a loud crack startles you both. Jiaoqiu has slapped his hand fan on the counter.
 "And will you be ordering, sir?"
 "Oh, yes, of course. You wouldn't catch old Sampo Koski loitering around, bringing bad business."
The two men grin at each other, charming smiles all around, although you can feel a charge in the air. Their smiles are a little colder than you've seen them before.
 "I'll have what she's having," Sampo says, pointing to you.
 "Oh, be careful Sampo," you say, "his noodles are really spicy."
"Oh don't you worry your pretty little head," Sampo chuckles. "I'm a man, I can handle a little spice."
"And besides," he continues, leaning in and whispering, "this guy doesn't scare me one bit. He might be all bark but I doubt he's got a lot of bite, even in his food."
The two of you chuckle, but you watch Jiaoqiu's ears flick in annoyance. Sampo’s digging himself a deep hole.
In fact, one could call it a grave.
"Here you go, sir," Jiaoqiu says, passing a bowl of noodles to Sampo. "Please enjoy as much as you can."
 "We'll take a bite together then," Sampo says to you, as the two of you raise your noodles from your bowls. "Three, two, one."
You slurp up your noodles, and let out a small moan. Heavenly. You expected nothing less from Jiaoqiu, of course, but the taste of his noodles never got boring. It’s rich, sweet, and deep, with a tingle of spice, as you always prefer. Jiaoqiu only kept his noodle stall open for a few hours a day but you made sure to mark the times and get yourself a helping whenever you felt like it. You smile up at him.
"Amazing as always, Jiao."
"You flatter me too much," Jiaoqiu says, fanning himself.
You hear sudden coughing at your side, and you turn to find Sampo hacking away, his face red.
"Sampo! Are you okay?" you ask.
 "I-I'm fine, miss," he wheezes. "It's just a little...spicy is all."
"Oh—" you turn to look at Jiaoqiu, who’s hiding the lower half of his face behind his handfan, watching Sampo flounder with slitted pupils. You look back at Sampo, making no remark.
"This—" Sampo coughs again, "—this is a lot of spice."
"Only as much as hers," Jiaoqiu says, gesturing to your own bowl. "You asked for what she had and I gave it to you."
You slurp up your own noodles, and Sampo watches as you swallow with no reaction.
"If you're as much of a man as you claim to be, I think you should be able to handle what she's eating with no problem," Jiaoqiu continues.
 "I can, yeah. This is nothing." Sampo grins at you, although you can see his eyebrows furrowing together. You only nod at him, then glance at Jiaoqiu as if to say how could you? Jiaoqiu only winks at you as Sampo musters up the courage to take another bite.
The rest of lunch you enjoy in silence, as Sampo is too busy wrestling with the spice he was given to make any further conversation, and Jiaoqiu isn't one for small talk. To Sampo's credit, he manages to finish the bowl, and by the end of it he looks as though he’s been through war. The two of you leave the stall together as Jiaoqiu closes up, and you notice Sampo giving the Foxian a dirty look.
△ △ △
It was only a few days later you found yourself in Aurum Alley, perusing the wares. A flash of soft pink catches your eye, and you turn to find Jiaoqiu wandering towards you, fan in hand.
"Fancy seeing you here," he purrs.
"Jiaoqiu? I thought you'd be managing your stall," you say. It isn’t yet the time for him to close.
"I would be, yes." Jiaoqiu flaps his handfan rapidly in front of his face, a sign of irritation.
 "Apparently my supplier for the peppers I use in my cooking ran into a bit of an issue. They made a… ‘bad trade.’ All of their peppers are inedible. Therefore, I have nothing to make my noodles with."
"I see," you muse. The situation he described rings a bell, yet you can’t place your finger on it. "That's unfortunate."
"They'll have a new shipment by the next week. I trust they won't make the same mistake again." Jiaoqiu stares off into the distance, anger bubbling under his lidded gaze. But the show of annoyance is shrugged off almost as fast as it came, and he turns to you with his trademark smile.
"Anyway, I won't bother you with unpleasant details." He offers his elbow to you. "Shall we take a stroll?"
You hook your arm in it, smiling at him.
 "Where are you going?" A voice comes from behind you, and both of you turn to find Sampo standing as though he'd been there the whole time, hands behind his back.
"Sampo!" you exclaim. Out of the corner of your eye you notice Jiaoqiu flatten his ears.
"Sorry if I scared you," Sampo smiles apologetically. "I was just too excited to see you."
"And look!" He brandishes a bouquet of flowers from behind his back, handing them to you. "I got these for you~"
"Oh, you shouldn't have," you say, taking them. Behind you, Jiaoqiu's tail thrashes from side to side.
"Oh, but who could resist giving such a lovely lady as yourself equally lovely flowers?" Sampo bows, then straightens.
"I see your companion has yet to give you anything.” Sampo turns towards Jiaoqiu. "Not very thoughtful of you, I must say.”
"I was about to take her on a stroll when you so rudely interrupted us." Jiaoqiu glares—glares—at Sampo.
"Really? That reminds me, aren't you supposed to be managing your stall right about now? Run into any... mishaps?" Sampo leans in, a challenging look in his eyes that is at odds with his placid expression.
"It's none of your business." The way Jiaoqiu waves his fan makes you worried he might break his wrist.
Sampo puts his arms up in mock surrender, then turns to you.
“Well, since I got you the flowers, you wanna go out on a walk with me?”
“I asked her first! And she accepted,” Jiaoqiu protests.
“But clearly I have more merit behind my offer,” Sampo argues.
“How about the two of you go out on a walk with me,” you say, getting in between them.
The two men look slightly miserable as they walk you down Aurum Alley. Of course, they don’t want to both be walking you but they can’t say no to your face, so here you all are. Being sandwiched between two attractive men, however, you can’t complain.
“Oh!” you gasp, breaking away from them to look at a food stall. “I’m really craving some skewers right now.”
“Consider them bought,” Jiaoqiu smiles. As he moves forward, Sampo stands in his way.
“I’ll buy you two,” Sampo offers you.
“I’ll buy you as much as you want, m’lady,” Jiaoqiu says, but it feels like he isn’t talking to you directly. The two of them are locked in a death stare with each other.
“Err… you can buy them for me Jiaoqiu,” you say. “I’ll make good on your offer later, Sampo.”
Jiaoqiu smirks at Sampo as he moves past him, but thankfully Sampo seems placated enough by your words to let him pass. You keep a laugh to yourself. Out of all the things, you didn’t think you’d ever have to stop Sampo from spending money on you.
Jiaoqiu comes back with the skewers, and you eat them quietly, savoring their sweet taste. The three of you keep walking down Aurum Alley, with you trying to keep the peace between the two men at your sides. They’re proving to be a lot more trouble than you had bargained for.
As the three of you come to the end of Aurum Alley, Jiaoqiu produces a small box from his pocket.
“You know, I don’t want us to continue on bad terms, Mr. Sampo. Accept this as a peace offering from me.”
Sampo raises an eyebrow at him, scrutinizing the box in his hands. Carefully, he decides to open it.
“You don’t trust me? I’m heartbroken,” Jiaoqiu puts a hand over his heart in mock shock.
“I’m sure you can forgive me for my suspicion,” Sampo says, pulling a small bottle out of the box.
“It’s only perfume. A gentleman of your caliber must be interested in such things.”
“Of course,” Sampo says, pocketing the bottle. “I appreciate your act of goodwill. Consider our slate cleaned.”
They smile at each other, and you’re certain that they’re now amicable.
△ △ △
The next day, however, you hear a knock on your door. You open it to find Sampo. You aren’t sure how he knows where you live, but your immediate concern is less on what he knows and more on how his eyes are red and tearing, and the expression on his face of deep anger.
“Where is that fox?” he asks.
You shake your head, letting him through. He splashes water on his face, and on his neck.
“What happened to you?” you ask.
“It’s that damn ‘perfume’ he gave me. Or rather, pepper spray.” He splashes water on his face again. “Peace offering, my ass.”
You move your hand up to your face in shock. After a lot of washing and rubbing, he removes enough of the spray, and stands up. You hand him a towel to dry off with.
“Now, darling, if you’d be so kind to tell me where he lives.”
“I honestly have no clue,” you say, and you’re speaking the truth. You only ever see Jiaoqiu either at his stall, or throughout the Xianzhou. With him being unable to sell ramen for the next few days, you don’t know of a place where you’d be able to find him reliably.
“That’s okay, I’ll find him myself. You wouldn’t want to watch us anyway. It’s going to get real nasty.”
Sampo smiles at you, and then walks out of the house, the door clicking shut behind him. You groan, putting a palm on your forehead.
△ △ △
For the next few days, neither man interacts with you. Whenever one gets close enough, the other would immediately sabotage him, leaving you to witness a fight out of the corner of your eye. For two non-confrontational men, it surprises you. You didn’t expect them to behave this way.
Regardless, you go on about your day, ignoring them. You aren’t one for ungentlemanly behavior.
One day, you receive a knock at your door. You open it to find both Sampo and Jiaoqiu standing behind it.
“Miss, we need you to decide,” Sampo says.
“Which one of us would you go out with?” Jiaoqiu finishes.
You look between them.
“Well, you see—” you start.
“The young lady is already spoken for tonight,” a deep voice rumbles behind them.
Sampo and Jiaoqiu turn around to find Jing Yuan. Immediately they straighten.
“Oh, I see.” Jiaoqiu says, fixing a peaceful smile on his face and bowing. “My apologies, general.” Sampo, not to be outdone, bows as well.
When the two stand back up, the general nods to each of them, smiling politely.
You observe all three men with deceptively gentle smiles on their faces, and realize that you have a very strong type. With a sigh, you step out the door and take the general’s hand, and the two of you walk into the night.

I think I'll take my noodles spicy
synopsis: You stop by Jiaoqiu's stall to try his noodles. They are very. Spicy. tags: jiaoqiu x reader, gn!reader, written before Jiaoqiu's release a/n: I think the reader is clearly a masochist. Also I don't know why I added that undertone of loneliness for Jiaoqiu, I think it's very out of character for him, but I decided to have a little fun since he isn't out yet. 700 words!

On a summer afternoon in the Xianzhou, you decided to stop by a well-known noodle stall and order some noodles.
The Foxian man standing on the other side of the counter smiled as he slid the bowl of noodles over to you.
There was a flash -- something mischievous glinted in his eye -- and then it was gone. You had heard conflicting opinions from people about this man. Half of them told you to stay away from him, and the other half said he was a miracle worker, if a little unorthodox.
Jiaoqiu was a healer, and you weren't sick, but you did want to try his renowned cooking.
The bowl of noodles smelled delicious as the steam wafted up towards you, and you happily picked up a few strands with your chopstick and deposited them into a deep spoon filled with broth, before slurping the entire spoonful. You could see his ears flick a little as he watched you intently.
He certainly was as handsome as the women claimed he was. It seemed that everything he did, he did it with that soft yet strange smile on his face.
 It didn't hit at first. But then you felt heat crackle at the back of your throat, burning you from the inside. Tears sprang to your eyes, and you coughed, covering your mouth with your sleeve.
"How do you like it?" Jiaoqiu asked, still with that smile on his face, which, in this moment of deep betrayal, you realized to be anything but sweet.
"It's a little--" you coughed, choking on the "--spicy."
 "Just the way it's meant to be enjoyed," he said, his tail swaying from side to side behind him. Despite the burning heat, the noodles were very good, and you watched yourself in horror as you raised some more rice noodles to your mouth (you avoided drinking any more of the broth to reduce the pain).
"It's a little mix that I made myself. I find that a good hit of spice will clear your sinuses and flush your system." Jiaoqiu continued.
 "You don't say," you half-said, half-cried as tears streamed down your face.
"Yes, I believe in the power of spice to ail the sick," Jiaoqiu said, passing a box of tissues. You gladly took one, blowing your nose. The spiciness was numbing your lips, and you panted in an attempt to cool your mouth, which felt as though it was set aflame.
It was clear now, despite his good looks, why you often saw him alone. His cooking probably scared off anyone who was initially interested in him. You continued to eat the noodles, slurping them up despite the fact that each time you did so a part of you caught fire and died inside.
 It was so spicy. And yet, so good.
And Jiaoqiu watched you intently the entire time, lazily resting on his hand through lidded eyes and slit pupils, like a hunter watching his prey flail in vain in his trap. It wasn't just your mouth, but his attention was setting your skin on fire.
Finally, you finished the bowl of noodles, pushing it in front of you. It felt as though you were breathing steam, and you mostly felt glad that it was all over.
"Did you enjoy your meal?" Jiaoqiu asked, smiling innocently as though he'd done nothing wrong.
"Y-yes," you said. Despite the torture you just went through, the flavor of the noodles was unlike any other. Jiaoqiu was deserving of his status as a famous cook.
"Here," he said, rising from the counter and moving to the back, "have some chilled Puffergoat milk. It'll help with the burning." You graciously accepted the ice-cold jar of thick milk, and gulped it down, sighing with relief as it washed away all the heat and pain from before. You set it down with a satisfied hum.
"I hope you'll come by to visit my stall again," Jiaoqiu said, rising. There was a hint of deflation, as though he were sad to be left alone again.
"Another, please," you said. He whirled around, ears perked up in surprise.
"What was that?" he asked.
 "I'll have another bowl of noodles," you said, grinning.
 "Really? I thought the first put you through quite some duress," he said.
"Well, so long as I keep drinking this throughout," you said, gesturing to the jar of milk at your side, "I can continue to enjoy your beautiful cooking."
Jiaoqiu blinked, then smiled, turning towards his pot and reaching for the ladle. As he scooped more soup into a bowl for you, you watched as his tail swayed from side to side.

Hi there long time lurker here for you blog and all your works! I'm not kidding its been a long time and I love your writings. May I request a Jiaoqiu x vidyadhara reader who is a sassy noble person with a sweet and kind heart but she somehow got severely injured?
Tumblr media
Thanks for requesting, I'm so glad that you enjoy my blog enough to ascend from the lurking stage! :D Hope to hear more from you in the future!!
»»———————— ♡ ————————««
♡ It's unlikely that Jiaoqiu is the first person to hear about your injury; however, he's the first one you see by your side once you open your eyes again. He sits there, stern-faced, ears twitching. His hand is holding yours almost a bit too tight, with some of his fingers resting on top of your pulse as if he's afraid you'll slip from his grasp. But you don't get the time to ask him why he looks so sullen because he jumps up and calls out to you the second he notices you waking up. Although he hovers over you when it becomes clear that you have regained your conscience, there is a certain distance between you two, and you can't really understand why. Even if you ask if something is the matter, he won't tell you, brushing you off and leaving if you insist on speaking about it. Not for long, just to cool off. After all, he still has to make sure you're fed and taken care of. Jiaoqiu won't allow anyone else to make your food, and he has to be in the room to review any medicine you receive.
♡ The reason why it feels that he's distant is because he is so angry. Angry at you, angry at the circumstances that put you in danger, and the most angry at anyone who hurt or allowed you to get hurt. Jiaoqiu is trying to keep his feelings in check in front of you, but he always knew things would play out like this. Countless times, he told you how reckless you were. That, no matter how good your heart was, you never thought twice before putting your life on the line. You find him flexing his fingers at the murderous thoughts in his mind or have him touch you just a tad too harshly when the feelings interfere with your treatment. He wants to throw all these accusations and emotions at you but refrains. You are a patient, and your recovery is more important to him than anything else.
♡ Especially when your recovery forms you into an adorable little mess for him to figure out. Vidyadhara are tricky organisms, and Jiaoqiu does everything he has to learn from Bailu how to treat you properly and then use the knowledge to the best of his abilities. He spends almost more time on research than actually treating you, but he won't allow a single mistake. Nobody is allowed to treat you except him, so you are also counting on him, only adding more pressure. It's all worth it, though, when he can observe you slowly regain your strength and liveliness, the bruises turning back into your skin color and your wounds closing up. No matter how much sleep he loses over it, he wouldn't miss the nights he spends with you for anything; protecting your sleep, slipping into your bed and cuddling with you when the nightmares act up, and getting to be with you when you wake up in the morning, feeling a little better every day.
♡ For a while, your conditions are a blessing as he gets to take care of you properly. Even just the mundane things, like brushing your hair or helping you wash up and dress yourself, thrill Jiaoqiu. It's almost a little sad that it has to end. He wants you to be healthy again, he really does! But won't you get yourself in trouble again once you don't need to be on bed rest? Won't you fight again, argue again? Are you going to keep coming back more beat-up than the last time for him to fix? Of course, someone as observant as he is notices your growing restlessness and desire to be up and of help. But this is not just about your self-preservation anymore, it is also about him. What will Jiaoqiu do if, one day, you just don't return at all?
♡ He can push these thoughts aside for a while since it takes time for you to be up and running again. But you begin slipping out of his grasp too quickly for his liking. And when you refuse to even be fed any more, telling him you are ready to go back to "normal" food, Jiaoqiu has to make a decision. "One last meal together," he tells you. One more, and he won't complain about you taking control of your own life again. He insists you take another spoon and another—enough so that the sleeping pill can really take effect.
♡ A patient who's still barely able to wake up can't be released from his care, right? You'll probably not feel so great the next few days, and he can't have you collapse in the street. Jiaoqiu has to at least find out the cause! He tells himself it's only for a few more days. Just one more week. He is merely prolonging the bedrest until you are fully healed—many would beg for a chance to get some good rest, and surely you will appreciate it, too. It's all in your best interest, but he certainly doesn't mind spending some extra cuddle time with you, doting on his favorite person.
♡ And while you are asleep, and he knows you are in a stable condition, he can finally take care of the actual problems that caused you so much harm. Because he still can't and refuses to forgive anyone who put their marks on you and made you suffer. They don't deserve his mercy, and he has feelings that he still needs to flush out of his system so he can give you the love and affection you deserve. Jiaoqiu will make things right, so they won't come to bite you in the butt once you are keeping yourself busy again. Even if it'll take a while longer for you to be back on your feet—that gives him enough time to prolong these wretched people's torture as long as they deserve.

Homecooked - Jiaoqiu x Reader / Fluff
Tumblr media
The door to your apartment creaked softly as you pushed it open, the weight of a long day hanging heavily on your shoulders. Your work had been particularly exhausting—staying overtime and you were absolutley beat. You just wanted to take off your shoes, lie down, and forget the world for a while.
But as you stepped inside, something was different. The usual silence of Jiaoqiu not being there was replaced by the warm, comforting scent of something delicious wafting from the kitchen, something you hadn’t smelled in months.
You blinked, taken aback. "Jiaoqiu?" you called out, almost wondering if your mind was playing tricks on you.
"Right here," came the soft response. Jiaoqiu appeared in the doorway, his hands tucked into the sleeves of his apron, a soft smile playing on his lips. "I hope you don’t mind. I thought I'd make dinner tonight."
You stood there for a moment, trying to process the sight. Jiaoqiu, the ever-diligent and caring individual, stood in your kitchen—an area you never expected to see him in, given his usual calm and scholarly demeanor. But here he was, his cheeks flushed with concentration, his eyes shut from his unfortunate blindness, holding onto the pot with a glove and stirring the soup.
"Jiaoqiu, you… cooked?" you asked, your voice betraying a mixture of surprise and curiosity. You couldn’t believe your eyes, wanting to know how?
He chuckled softly, his smile growing a bit sheepish.”I’ve missed being in the kitchen.." You look around the kitchen, and you see the spices out on the counter, in a line, all seeminly organized. The same goes for the utensils and pots, all having been organized in a way so he knows exactly where everything is. He had managed to find a way to do something he loves to do even when his unfortunate situation normally wouldnt allow him to.
Your heart warmed at the thought, and the tension you’d been carrying all day seemed to melt away. "You didn’t have to cook for me…but I’m really glad you did." You were estatic, smiling happily as you watch your husband work on making you dinner. He was careful, both of his hands wearing heat gloves, gently reaching out for what he needed, and using his foxian nose to determine he had the spice he needed.
You both stayed in silence, but you knew he still knew you were there with him.
As he finished cooking, the scent of the meal filled the room—a savory mix of spices, tender meat, and vegetables simmering together perfectly. Jiaoqiu carefully plated the dish and set it before you on the table, the presentation neat but humble, just like him.
"Go ahead, try it," he encouraged, his voice soft but filled with hope. He was praying he hadnt messed anything up..
You picked up your spoon, the first bite surprising you with how comforting and flavorful it was. The balance of flavors was perfect, the tenderness of the meat complemented by the richness of the sauce. It was the kind of food that made you feel like you were home, wrapped in warmth and care.
You sigh, letting out a hum if appreciation. "This is... incredible," you said, looking up at him in awe. "Jiaoqiu, I didn’t expect this.. its delicious. You’ve outdone yourself."
He blushed slightly, his smile growing wider. "I’m glad you think so. I spent a lot of time on it, and I wanted to make sure it was just right for you.. I’ve missed cooking for you..”
As you continued to eat, the two of you talked—about the day, about trivial things, about little bits of life that felt less significant but more intimate in the moment. It was clear this meant more to him than just cooking.
"You know," you said between bites, a smile tugging at your lips, "this is exactly what I needed. Thank you."
His smile softened as he tilted his head and turned towards you. “I’m happy to do it. Your happiness means a lot to me."
The night passed quietly as you finished your meal, Jiaoqiu staying by your side, content in knowing he had made a difference in your day. You realized that, in this small, simple act of cooking, he’d given you something far more valuable than just food—he had given you a moment of peace and a reminder that even on the hardest days, there was still comfort to be found.

👁️Jiaoqiu x Feixiao 👁️Seeing Eye
She couldn’t tell if he was asleep or not. He was lying motionless on the bed beside hers, breathing slowly and eyes shut tight, not like the last fact would be a tell-tale sign. He didn’t speak a single word to her the entire time either. Perhaps he was under the assumption that she was resting as well?
"Jiaoqiu?" Feixiao said softly.
Jiaoqiu turned head slowly in the direction of her voice.
"Hm?"
"Ah, my apologies, I didn’t know that you were asleep."
"Oh, I wasn’t. Not like you’d be able to tell either way," he said with a soft chuckle.
He’s laughing
He lost his eyesight, and he’s laughing.
Feixiao forced herself to sit up on her bed. The pain shot through her side despite the medications, but she wasn’t going to let a little soreness stop her. She looked down at Jiaoqiu, who had his ears turned towards the direction of her voice.
"I’m...sorry. If I were quick enough, I could’ve saved you," she said.
"Nah, I should be sorry. I’m your healer, and now I can’t even read the ingredients for a little bowl of hot pot."
"You’re more than just my healer, Jiaoqiu. You’re my partner, my cook, my absolutely everything. And I..." Feixiao felt herself get choked up before she could say anything.
"And partners look out for each other, love. Eyesight in place of a life is a small sacrifice."
Feixiao clenched her fist, but took a deep breath. He was adamant that he did the right thing, and he truly did in the grand scheme of things, but any arguing would only bring more stress upon their already weakened bodies. Calling him an idiot for saving her life, and all of Xianzhou for that matter, was best saved for another day.
"Never mind that for now. How’s your detox coming along?" Feixiao asked with the intent of changing the subject.
"I don’t feel like I’m rotting away from the inside out, so that’s a plus. How are you holding up?"
"Hoolay hit like me a bitch, but thankfully he’s been subdued with me remaining in one piece."
"Ah, that’s a relief. I can only imagine how bad you must look right now."
Perhaps, just this once, she was glad that Jiaoqiu couldn’t see her. Her body was covered in bruises and cuts, what couldn’t be seen at first glance was most certainly hidden under a layer of gauze and bandages. If Jiaoqiu could see her, he would be stumbling out of his bed and crawling to the kitchen to cook her a meal for at least a boost in morale, if not amendments to her wounds.
"It’s not as bad as you think," she said, partially lying.
"Oh, I know you, dear. You’re probably bleeding from every square inch of your body."
"It’s not that bad, I promise."
"I can still smell your blood without any compromise."
Right. The whole scent thing was a bit of a problem here.
"Jiaoqiu, dear, I assure you, my injuries are not as severe as you think."
"How I wish I could believe you, but my ability to do so remains my one regret."
"Regret? I thought you didn’t have any regrets?"
"I won’t be able to see you again. Ever."
Feixiao was once more starting to feel choked upon hearing Jiaoqiu’s confession. He wouldn’t be able to see the meals he prepared, the condition of his patients, the enemies on the battlefield...the waves against the shore, the light of the sun’s rays, Feixiao smiling at stars beyond... the memories may be engraved into his mind, but that would never compare to seeing the world in the present.
"But you’re alive," Jiaoqiu continued, "and that is what’s most important to me."
A tear fell from Feixiao’s eye, and she forced her mouth shut to not allude to Jiaoqiu how she was feeling. He slowly rolled onto his back, but angled his ears so that he could still hear her.
"I can hear you crying."
Feixiao quickly put her hand over her mouth. Of course he could still pick up on even the smallest details. And he could hear Feixiao slip up. The slightest sign of weakness, which truly felt an unacceptable slipup to her. A tear formed in Jiaoqiu’s eye, but he covered his face and winced in pain before it could fall.
"Jiaoqiu, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything." Feixiao said.
He wiped his eyes with his arm, and turned towards her with a smile.
"Ah, there’s nothing to be sorry about. This is all on me.”
Jiaoqiu rolled over to his other side and his tail slowly poked out from under the blanket. He weakly wiggled it, like he was trying to attract a cat with a feather toy.
"Come on, Feixiao. You know you want to."
Jiaoqiu’s tail was extremely tempting, particularly seeing as Feixiao did not have one of her own. She did not recall Jiaoqiu sustaining any critical injuries to his tail, and the distance between their beds was small enough...
She slid out of her bed and walked the few steps towards Jiaoqiu. He heard her approach him as she limped heavily, though anyone could, and slid himself over to the edge just enough so that Feixiao had enough room to lay by him. Careful as to not crush his tail, she flopped her body beside him and grabbed ahold of his plush fur.
Despite being caked in blood days prior, it was well groomed and soft, though the fur was trimmed to be a little shorter. Usually, it was rather warm and cozy, but Jiaoqiu’s tail felt cold. Feixiao knew that it was due to extreme blood loss, but she couldn’t help but still panic when he felt chillingly like a long dead body.
Feixiao felt a bit guilty about his condition and held his tail a bit closer to her body.
Jiaoqiu pushed himself up slowly to sit and said to her, "Feixiao, I have a favor to ask."
"Hm?" she said, muffled by his fur.
"If I should one day forget what the waves look like, will you act as my eyes and describe them to me down to the smallest ripple?"
"It’s the least I could do as thanks for all of your sacrifices," Feixiao said, peeling her face away from his tail.
"But I insist on being your tail in return. I have more than enough fluff for the both of us, well when it grows back in anyways! Hahah-ack!"
"Take it easy, Jiaoqiu," she said, stuffing her head back into his fur.
Jiaoqiu patted his hand around searching for her head, only getting close enough to pat the mattress beside her. She felt him searching, and grabbed his wrist gently to guide him to the top of her head. He pried his fingers around a little, until he felt the back of her ears, then he started to scratch them.
His fingers felt cold. It made sense why, but it was heartbreaking nonetheless.
Jiaoqiu turned behind him and opened his eyes. For a fleeting moment, it had slipped his mind that he was no longer able to see. He saw nothing. Not even the light that cut through the thickest of darkness in his life. As his expression dimmed, he hoped that her face was still shoved into his tail, as he couldn’t exactly feel much between the thick fur and the chill. No matter how many times he kept telling himself, he still couldn’t shake the dread of never being able to see Feixiao again.
And she couldn’t shake the regret of being unable to save his eyesight.
Better for the smaller sacrifices to be made, for if Jiaoqiu didn’t cleverly poison himself, the Wardance would’ve quickly gone from a celebration to a massacre, costing the lives of far more innocent bystanders. There would have been no second chances to rectify the consequences of their failures. Jiaoqiu, however, had a second chance at seeing again, with Feixiao’s words able to paint a picture of the world before him.

Matchup for @little-soldi3rs
Sorry this is late also the format for the ask was weird so i had to @ you instead of responding to the ask directly. Anyway without further ado.
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Tumblr media
JIAOQIU!!!
I think you and Jiaoqiu would be a very warm couple. You both have a love of people and are incredibly kind. You also have a shared love of cooking and use it as a medium to convey your hearts.
You were a researcher who was doing a thesis on the land of a planet the Yao Qing troops were stationed at.
While you were taking some samples of the geographical formations, you were attacked by an abomination of abundance. You were within an inch of your life before you were saved.
You didn’t get a good look at who it was but they had long ears and a soft voice. “Don’t worry I’ll take care of you,” you heard before everything faded to black.
You woke up in a tent covered in bandages and with the smell of something delicious. A foxian man approaches your bedside with a bowl of soup.
He helps you sit up and encourages you to eat. He introduces himself as Jiaoqiu, the military’s healer. He doesn’t know what but something inside him to take care of you personally.
Since the day they found you to the day you made a full recovery he worked tirelessly day and night heal you. During that time you got to properly know each other and became quite close.
He was happy when you were better, but a little disappointed that it ment you wouldn’t get to spend as much time together anymore. He enjoyed your company and maybe had a bit of a crush on you cough cough.
Eventually he is able to work up to courage to ask you out months later to dinner at his place and he admits his feelings for you.
You guys are a very protective couple if that makes sense. You fuss and preen over each other like monkeys making sure the other is properly taking care of themselves.
Always making sure you’re eating enough and that the food is nutritious and you’re getting enough of the right vitamins and minerals is his passion.
You guys will cook together almost every night unless one or both of you had a long day then you’ll order out even if he insists on cooking anyway. He may be a bit pouty, but just give him a bit of a kiss and it’ll be all good.
You and him play chess together a lot. You both currently have an equal number of wins and have yet to break the tie to this day.
When you cuddle he lets you pet and play with his tail while he plays with your hair and you nerdy ramble to him. He finds it incredibly comforting. His tail is incredibly soft sometimes you fall asleep cuddling it and he dare not move until you wake up.
Because he’s seen so many of his friends die due to not only being a long lived species, but also working on the battle field, he is highly protective of you. He’s afraid you’ll become one of the many faces that fails to return to him. You have to reassure him that you won’t just disappear.
Sometimes he has PTSD episodes and you’re the only one who can calm him down. Whether it’s with words or just holding him, he is very grateful to you.
Sometimes you get a bit insecure about all the time he spends with general Feixiao. You know it’s just his job, but you can’t help it. Who wouldn’t fall for her she’s beautiful, smart, and strong.
He waves those insecurities away by peppering your face with kisses and says you’re 1000 everything she is in his eyes and he would never want anyone else.
And you feel the same.

The Yaoqing trio may have met their match in the form of an adorable ball of astral mischievousness.
“You know, they say seeing a Wubbaboo is good luck.”
My mandatory Halloween fic is up! I am obsessed with HSR so naturally this year it had to be that fandom. (And this trio gives me life truly) November I am planning to do a chapter fic also HSR, but this time it'll be the Penacony gang! Keep your eyes peeled for that one coming soon.

i wrote a short jiaoqiu fic. may or may not post it in the coming days! I have to edit it first before I think of even posting it.
It involves spicy food, and mischievous fox-like quality.

2024 Fic Year in Review!
Welcome to the future everyone, but first... a glimpse of the past through the magic of graphic design
Tumblr media
As you can see, I was very, very busy hahaha and will remain so, with all that stuff in the oven. This year (last year??) I posted and got into so much new content, it's actually pretty wild. The 2022 and 2023 evened out around 150k words published, so yay new record! I'm nearing 1 million posted on Ao3 so big milestone!
You can read any of the fics here on my Ao3
And I'm always willing to give sneak peeks if you are curious about what I'm cooking!
What to expect in 2025?
Well, more of the same mostly, but firstly those two KLK zine fics will be off embargo, and then potentially that monster of a Jing Yuan x Jiaoqiu fic will be done. Expect at least 1 short fic for Settphel week early January as well. Since I've replaced Genshin Impact with ZZZ expect more of that in the world, because I cannot help myself v_v though I will likely still write GI so no worries.
As always, thanks for following along!

Important Note: There are some characters I will NEVER be writing for even if they are loved in the fandom and popular. Number one reason is because it reminds me too much of my husband in real life. So it's uncomfortable and awkward writing stories with characters that remind me too much of him (e.g. Toji from JJK, Yoo Joonghyuk from ORV, Aomine Daiki from KNB, Sung Jinwoo from SL, Wriothesley from GI, Callisto Regulus from VADTD, most ‘black flag’ or even red flag manhwa MLs to name a few. There's more, but these are some popular examples).

Honkai: Star Rail Fanfiction Story ideas (Part 1/?)
A/N: I made so many for Genshin, might as well make my list for HSR. Also, these are pretty much all "x reader". They are in no particular order. Basically piles of stories I don't believe I have the time or skill to write. If someone does make it, tag me cause I'd love to read it! ~~ (not proofread) Moze x reader -Xianzhou Trailblaze continuance quest, the one with Hoolay -Foxian!reader -reader used to be a slave of some sort to the borisin before running away with Feixiao -reader is Feixiao's friend and proxy/representative/diplomat or something of that sort, helping out with paperwork and other minor General related duties whilst Feixiao deals with the important stuff -Moze and reader get together prior to trailblaze continuance -Moze can be soft and awkward in private, but takes his job and professionalism very seriously, especially when his job this protecting his s/o -therefore reader and Moze are professional when they're in work -reader is sent to oversee the current state, details, and conditions of Hoolay's imprisonment in the Luofu Shackling Prison for Feixiao with Jiaoqiu and Moze -reader tries to escape to get help during the prison break, gets grabbed by a borisin and used as momentary leverage or something -reader and Jiaoqiu tell Moze to go (he leaves reader behind reluctantly) -reader and Jiaoqiu are the ones taken hostage -maybe Hoolay taunts Moze with reader as the Shackling Prison doors close (so close to save yet so far away) -idk maybe Moze goes through all the angst and self blame and having the sole job of protecting reader yet failing and leaving them to be back in the clutches of the creatures who abused them centuries ago -Feixiao has to convince him not to do anything stupid -when Moze finds reader again, screw Jiaoqiu, s/o is the priority -maybe Jiaoqiu is aware and is like "yea, please save them" -Moze is likely successful, but both probably get injured -reader either joins the fight (much to Moze's chagrin) or is insisted to a hospital (which Moze would probably prefer lol) -reunion scene, return to Yaoqing, Moze and reader kinda heal from all the trauma together -lots of fluff and/or cuddles when they get home -Moze opening up a little how scared he was to potentially lose reader
Jiaoqiu x reader -also based off the Hoolay quests -foxian!reader or human!reader -reader works with him, Moze, and Feixiao -perhaps they're engaged or married at this point -they both end up being taken hostage by the borisin -insert Jiaoqiu trying to do whatever he can to take the brunt of the borisin's assualts and taunts -if foxian!reader, him holding them and trying to shield them away from seeing the foxian man being attacked by Hoolay and turned into a borisin -if human!reader, reader trying to silently comfort him as the foxian man is being attacked and transformed before them -reader is able to escape, but Jiaoqiu is tragically unable to in time -reunion at the hospital where they make the discovery that Jiaoqiu is now blind -back home on the Yaoqing, life is more difficult for Jiaoqiu -reader has time off of work and reader tries to help Jiaoqiu nagivate life again without his sight -it's definitely a hindrance to him in some cases, especially when it comes to making his delicious elaborate meals, but he insists that he's just happy reader got away safe and unscathed and that he'd gladly do it all over again for them
Tingyun/Fugue x reader -I have not yet done her Fugue story quests yet, but I absolutely adore Tingyun/Fugue -foxian!reader (cause long life) -loved and lived with Tingyun for years prior to the Trailblaze quests -reader witnessed a shift in her at one point, but no one else seemed to notice it all that much -this person looks like Tingyun, sounds like Tingyun, acts like Tingyun, but something in the back of their mind tells them that this is not their Tingyun -they witness the neck snap and reveal of Phantylia -angst as they realize that their love may very well no longer be alive -starskiff funeral and returning to the now empty home with no Tingyun -grief of having to face the reality that she is very likely dead, coping with trauma of essentially "seeing her die" right in front of them, and the realization that they've basically been living with an imposter for who knowns how long -(time skip) -reader is only slightly beginning to accept and move on with life, but Tingyun's memory is never faded in their mind -then, she's there, standing before them -"You're just as beautiful as the day I lost you" moment -option 1: Fugue does not remember them, reader is understandably heartbroken and the grieving comes in another heavy wave, insert reader trying to be nice and helping and respecting her boundaries whilst also pushing aside the feeling of embracing her and rejoicing her return, angst route leads to Fugue being grateful for the effort but saying she'd rather not build the relationship further and they go their separate ways, happy route leads to Fugue falling for reader again slowly over time with their relationship somewhat stronger than before -option 2: reader and Fugue work through repairing old memories and catching up on lost time, reader helps her navigate life once more whilst she's healing from everything she went through -reader has to figure out how to handle the fact that the person they love is somewhat of a different person now

going through 2.5
2.5 STORY SPOILERS
trigger warning later of minor character death. shown off screen but is described in a way that could sound horrible to the faint of heart
WHAT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know i joked in my previous post when going through 2.4 that it sounded like the start of a fanfiction but im genuinely disgusted by this ew i was really fucking tempted to just write a fic where jiaoqiu beats his ass (even though i know hoolay is way more powerful then him) but also 2.5 already came out so i gotta get through the story before i get spoiled
Tumblr media
the smart choice would be to do 2. but also fuck you hoolay im doing 1. HHH jiaoqiu's voice sounds so like. stressed. like trying to have composure but you can tell hes struggling a little.
also im sorry but hoolays human form looks so fucking ugly (okay maybe im biased but also FUCK YOU HOOLAY) idk ppl might still simp for him but also fuck you im on jiaoqius side >:(
Tumblr media
STOPPP USING THE WORD ALPHA like ive heard it so many times in media im DONE i cant hear it the same 😭
Tumblr media
"💀 " "None Can Hurt Me" UHHMSOFJFO i sure hope nothing happens to you buddy but
Tumblr media
BURN BABY BURN
Tumblr media
what the fuck im scared
Tumblr media
wait but so i CAN go try to get help? IM SCARED WHAT HAPPENS. uh. uh. uh. FUCK YOU HOOLAY IM DOING IT
wait if i do this will he die. like the the the npc?!?!??!?! GUYSS
Tumblr media
AHAHa.. AHgahah.... im. so fucing nervous
Tumblr media
im. ohhhh fuck literal chills. im. should i look at what other options i can do to escape or. im so fucking stressed holy shit. logically speaking if jiaoqiu leaves and the ship gets sabotaged or whatever he could die (both him and npc). if he asks him to send a message then the npc will die. guys i hate this what the fuck
Tumblr media
I HATE THAT ITS RED TEXT. okay with acheron it was a little startling but we never got like a warning that OUR ACTIONS have CONSEQUENCES. im so fucking scared
Tumblr media
me too man. me too. idont want jiaoqiu to die thoguh what if what we choose changes whether or not he dies in canon im
Tumblr media
okay ive talked to everyone. and the warning text for everyone is
the skarskiff(?) guy is just an ordinary person the realm keeping person is not prepared for this kind of emergency and that the cloud knight doesnt have backup (has the same choice options as the realm keeping person of borisin are here and introducing ourself)
also that we're being watched. who the fuck
okay the best option would be to cloud knight. but also is it a good idea? no. but. hiusgh. oh my god i hate this.
IM GOING TO BITE THE BULLET. i dont trust that this will end well for me but the logical option even if i get fucked later is to alert someone. a cloud knight knows what risks and responsibilities they're taking on by becoming one and if they die well fuck man but i REFUSE to just not do anything because that'd be like. playing into hoolays hands which 1. i hate him. 2. as a person who very much values my independence I NEED OUT OF THIS SITUATION
and maybe its what hoolay wants, for us to fail his 'test' but whatever. IM REBELLIOUS. (and probably really dumb)
cant wait to see how this affects story in the future. and also seeing how different choices affect things when i watch other people do this. haha. but predicting that they might not talk to anyone out of fear IM going to talk to someone
uhh im going to introduce myself first. its like how you're meant to share your address first in emergencies or something i think maybe? because if the call cuts out then they can find you quickly (i think your phone can be tracked but it takes awhile its not that easy i think?)
okay i did it. wheres the guy who was watching me i cant remember where he was. is he gone? did he disappear? i acnt tell im so fuckings tressed
nothing happened but. but the cloud knights gone now (presumably to spread the news)
i. do i tell other people ? do i. im. okay im
i only talked to the cloud knight. and then im going to do what hoolay asked. thats it. im not brave or reckless enough to tell eVEryone
HIS VOICE IS TREMBLING for the 100th time i hate this
Tumblr media
GUH
I FORGOT THEY HAVE OFFICIAL IDENTITIES PRETENDING TO BE--
oh fuck MY DUMBASS
Tumblr media
his voice... AGHH JIAOQIUUU
Tumblr media
GO FUCK YOURSELF YOURE NOT THE BOSS OF ME
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i knew it. i fucking knew it. IM JUSTIFYING IT TO MYSELF BECAUSE CLOUD KNIGHT YOU BECOME IT KNOWING YOU COULD DIE OKAY. id rather have tried to escape then not at all and prove his racist belief 'right'. okay i know im probably in the wrong because they couldve lived if i didnt do anything and i had a hunch that they wouldve died if i asked for help. but. okay at my core i am selfish. and for all i knew there was a teeny tiny chance that it couldve succeeded
and listen. im quoting twisted wonderland now.
"Zero is zero no matter what you multiply it by, right? But if you take some form of action, that zero could potentially become 0.001. And 0.001 has a chance of becoming 100. In which case, there's no reason NOT to do it." (Book 6 - Chapter 48 • A Sequel Cut Short)
i hate these kinds of mind games.
hoolay fucking yapping and i know we're in a tough situation meant to demonstrate how jiaoqiu's kind of powerless but hoolays just talking about how jiaoqiu will eventually crumble and im just. yeah okay big talk. and like i get that hoolay does have connections still and ppl pretending to be foxians keeping a close eye on everything and genuinely wont hesitate to kill someone but okay i just hate him
god he sounds like one of those people who are like. when you refuse their advances and they go 'oh so youre playing hard to get huh?' and keep going with the belief that we definitely want them or some shit💀
i should pretend. but no i cant. thats not the kind of person i am.
Tumblr media
oh shit. yeah okay remind me that maybe this could potentially lead to jiaoqiu dying in canon. i mean. its happened in npc stories before right? like that one person in penacony who we could choose to stop her from falling or let her fall
but fucking OW. hoolay talking doesnt terrify me. and maybe thats why im choosing all the dumb options. but ow.
Tumblr media
does he have this pose if we pretend to show weakness? i mean maybe its cause we got hurt and hes exaggerating it and showing weakness then. or maybe it actually hurts like a bitch and he cant help but show reaction.
Tumblr media
OMG MOZE
okay actually other idea of jiaoqius plan. contacting someone for help and deliberately being caught so its not suspicious if we go along with his demands too easily (but having another plan to get help thats more secret)
like okay i know it was my choice to try to get help and fucking it up but still canon-like right. although i doubt he'd be okay sacrificing an innocent life so um oops
Tumblr media
AHHH FUCKING LITERAL CHILLS. we got jiaoqiu flashback where he was like a healer on the battlefield. i dont think im saying that right i forgot what theyre called. but like remember feixiao mentioning in 2.4 how jiaoqiu healed her, and later became her like main healer or something something i forget the wording
and then it goes black and we hear hoolays voice. i have a little hunch that it might be the thing to stop the lupitoxin's effects starting to fade, nad thus the toxin starting to affect him
Tumblr media
hh his voice... :(
Tumblr media
yeah okay so let us go
Tumblr media
sorry did he just bite someone and they turned into a borisin or did it just get rid of the guys disguise
i wasnt paying attention to who it was. i know it wasnt mok tok (different appearance, also it showed jiaoqiu turning away to not see it and mok tok standing there while that was happening)
its genuinely so confusing trying to tell who is a foxian and whose a borisin cause disguises but i assume its an actual borisin who was disguised...
hes talking to moze but all i can hear is monke from ben's stream (aka moze's EN VA LMFAO)
Tumblr media
OH IT WAS A NORMAL FOXIAN
what if he does it on jiaoqiu but then they figure out how to turn jiaoqiu back to normal and learn how to cure feixiao. right? right??? probably not but im so stressed
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT JIAOQIU. he sounds so.. wrung out. exhausted.
Tumblr media
acting is fucking 10/10 he sounds kind of unhinged but in the slow still exhausted but with emphasis on some of the words?? like. like he still has fight in him. i dont know how to explain this but its really cool
Tumblr media
oh shit does he die now
hooly fucking shit literal chills the text appearing on the black screen actually like communicating in a way to us and helping us get an idea of whats going on
okay major manga spoilers for demon slayer. but here is my next prediction: he has poison in his blood that will affect the borisins if they drink it, like how shinobu kocho had like a shit ton of wisteria in her blood (it was also under her fingernails and shit like that, she put it EVERYWHERE) so that when douma (who killed her sister) ate her he'd be poisoned and severely weakened
AM I RIGHT??
Tumblr media
I. FUCKING. KNEW ITTTTTT
okay well it was pretty obvious because right before it mentioned the green peppers(?) thing and how to get a picky child to eat it, it re-mentioned that conversation. and then changed it how to get a wolf to something something i already forgot so it was obvious
but JIAOQIU LETS GOOOO i really hope you didnt die
no wait but shit
okay so i cant share any more images i hit the limit on tumblr but okay so if he consumed poison (ist tumbledust. i already forgor. was it like the thing thats like a sedative thats good in small quantities but lethal in large quantities? or was that like yabruh or something)
does that mean he'll die anyway or
i dont think jiaoqiu said it in front of hoolay but anyway im so unhappy that cutscenes lag for me (hoolay immediately clocks on that it was probably jiaoqiu who poisoned him but sdhfuf. this MEANS that hoolay drank JIAOQIUS BLOOD?!?!?!?!? is he DEAD??? )
also i HATE the hoolay fight im struggling so bad ahuisdhdisuad
YANQING LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO (boutta trigger hoolays jingliu trauma)
im sorry for accusing you of being a disguised borisin, sparkle traumatized me ok (and im sorry for pinching your cheeks in 2.4 being cautious of if you were a fake but also i didnt know that was what that option meant)
you were just acting really weird so i got stressed but LETS GOOOO
WHAT WE'RE FIGHTING HIM AGAIN????? YOURE FUCKING WITH ME
oh shit feixiao boss fight
heyy her character. trailer?? i think thats what it was called teased this. like cause she got drunk and couldnt recognize jing yuan and fought him (briefly)
YANQING FUCKING POPPED OFF THIS STORY
i (think) all thats left is feixiao boss fight that we saw in the livestream
some stuff. ill do wardance later. but im gonna end this post here. havent gotten to the end but i dont think ill have anything else to share and i dont have space here anyway so brr
OH FINALLY I CAN ACCESS DIFFICULTY MODES
AND YOU CAN CHOOSE THEM WHILE IN STORY OH THANK FUCK casual mode my precious
okay we figfhting preceptor oh
dan heng: the oath of the alliance doesnt matter to me because im not a part of the alliance anymore *attacks*
me using imbitior lunae dan heng in battle: uh. uh. uh. uhm. YEP
anyway jiaoqius alive (he almost died though)
he sounds so more subdued :(
HOLY SHIT HES BLIND? OH MY GOD thats both better and worse than i thought
OH MY GOD TINGYUN
i was so confused on ruan mei appearance but OH MY GOD

For Shits and Giggles - Honkai: Star Rail fanfiction
After playing March's sword training sidequest, I couldn't stop thinking about Jiaoqiu's ending. Hence, this plot bunny came about.
Jiaoqiu couldn’t say he cared about the ongoings of many people. He cared about what happened to his master, both as her servant and companion, and he cared about things that happened to Moze, both as his acquaintance and co-worker. Otherwise, people could go on and live their lives as they pleased, allowing Jiaoqiu to sit back and watch with detached amusement, interest, or boredom. Life had become much easier—and less painful—after he’d adopted this mentality.
Yet, he couldn’t remain detached all the time. Occasionally, he’d get drawn into a battle that wasn’t his. Such as when a little pink-haired girl came up to him with requests for medicine to enhance her sword training. Teasing her and her gray-haired companion had been an entertaining way to pass the time, so he thought it fair to give them a little assistance in return. At the end of the day, he was a healer, a helper of people.
In most cases, his assistance would have ended there. On the contrary, this did not happen to be most cases.
Skott of the IPC. Oh, he’d heard the name, and much to his misfortune, he’d even seen the face, heard the voice, and suffered the attitude. In one particularly vivid memory involving a certain incident on the Yaoqing, one that had taken days for Feixiao to personally resolve, that man had been front and center.
Anyone who caused trouble for Jiaoqiu could be ignored and swept under the rug. Anyone who caused trouble for Moze would be on Jiaoqiu’s watch list, as long as Moze didn’t get to them first. Anyone who dared cause trouble for General Feixiao was not forgotten.
“Moze,” Jiaoqiu began, waving his fan leisurely at their accommodations as he looked out the window over the city. “Are you busy?”
The man in question looked up from inspecting one of his blades. The other blade rested on the table in front of him, along with a whet stone, a bowl of water, and a few rags. Despite their numerous differences, one hobby they shared was the intense care of their knives.
Jiaoqiu lowered his fan as he turned towards his companion. “Does an IPC representative by the name of Skott ring a bell?”
Moze’s grip on his knife tightened, the only visible sign of his disturbance. “The one who insulted Feixiao behind her back?”
“Ah, so you do remember him.”
“Starkly.”
A dark chuckle escaped Jiaoqiu. “He’s back in town, causing trouble. Now—”
“I’ll stop him.”
“I haven’t even said a thing.”
Moze stood, swinging his knife around. “The general is here for rest and medicine. As her retainers, you are responsible for researching the latter, while I am responsible for the removal of any hinderances preventing the former.”
Jiaoqiu’s smile felt a little less forced at that. “Let me handle it, Moze.”
The man quirked a brow at Jiaoqiu’s direction. “You?”
“Why not?”
“You don’t get involved unless something personal is at stake.”
“As a healer, I am also responsible for ensuring the rest of my patient.” His red eyes opened, sparkling with danger. “By any means necessary.”
For a moment, Moze held Jiaoqiu’s sly gaze before he plopped back onto his seat. “You getting involved promises to be worse than anything I can do to him.”
Jiaoqiu’s grin widened. “You think so lowly of me.”
“My judgement of you is right where it should be.”
I know. Jiaoqiu held the same opinion of Moze.
“Do you require assistance?” Moze asked.
“Join me for lunch tomorrow.”
“Just don’t make it spicy.”
“I’m counting on you to ensure it’s not.”
~~~
The pot of soup Jiaoqiu had spent the morning working on was just about done. Across from him, a certain man in purple was hunched over the empty counter space that wasn’t littered with ingredients, his chin propped up on his crossed arms as he watched the foxian removed a bundle of herbs from the pot.
Taking a small, flat dish that fit quite nicely in his hand, Jiaoqiu poured a bit of broth into it before handing it to Moze. “Taste; don’t eat.”
Moze took the offered cup from him. “Must you ruin perfectly good soup?”
“Ruin?” Jiaoqiu grinned. “My friend, it has been perfected.”
Raising the small dish to his lips, Moze sipped the broth but didn’t swallow. He swished it in his mouth for a couple seconds  before spitting it back out into the dish. “Bitter.”
“How bitter?”
“Kicks in after a second.”
“Aftertaste, huh?” Looking over his arsenal of ingredients, Jiaoqiu took a pinch of this, a sprinkle of that, topped it with some herbs, and let it simmer again.
“Do I get lunch?” Moze questioned, lazily watching Jiaoqiu work. “Or was your invitation suggesting we go out for it?”
“Since when have I ever invited you out to lunch?”
Moze shrugged.
Again, Jiaoqiu filled another dish, extending it to Moze.
And again, Moze took the cup, emptied it, swishing it in his mouth before spitting it out. He paused, assessing the taste.
“Aftertaste gone?”
“Yes.”
“Is that all you have to say about it?”
Moze’s eyes narrowed as he took the two used tasting dishes to the sink. “If you wanted more eloquent descriptions, you should have asked the general.”
“Oh, but she’s so busy. How could I possibly bother her?”
Moze washed his mouth with a sip of water, spitting it into the sink. “So, it finished?”
“One last thing.” Jiaoqiu reached for the chili oil.
Only to be stopped by Moze, who slapped his hand over the top of the jar.
“Moze.”
“No.”
“Moze.”
“No.”
With a relenting huff, Jiaoqiu reached for the green garnishes instead. “Fine.” He added a few flourishes on top of the soup before putting a lid on it. “Will you do me a favor and deliver this for me?”
Only after moving the chili oil out of Jiaoqiu’s reach did Moze reach for the pot. “Were you planning to make us lunch at all?”
“Will you be patient for your reward?”
“No.”
Jiaoqiu sighed, mostly for show. “I should have expected nothing less from you. I’ll make it up to you later.”
“Lunch and a show?”
“I suppose that’s one way to put it.”
~~~
With two wrapped and warm lunches, Jiaoqiu sat at their predetermined rooftop, prepared for a picnic. He’d already left the famed Nameless duo and the other two of their party members. His duty was finished. All that was left was the watch the results of his labor.
He heard the soft footsteps of his companion approach from behind. “Do I get lunch now?” Moze dryly muttered.
Jiaoqiu handed him the box wrapped in a purple towel.
Taking the food, Moze plopped down on the bench next to him. In return, he handed Jiaoqiu a small pair of binoculars. He then put down a receiver in between the two of them, mucking with it for three seconds before the clear sound of Skott’s grating voice came in.
“This better not be spicy,” Moze muttered.
“The food or the show?”
“You should never be left alone with chili oil.”
“I don’t over-spice your rewards.”
“Once.”
“Exactly: once.”
Moze sighed, throwing a dumpling in his mouth before raising a second pair of binoculars to his own eyes. Through the transmitter, they could hear everything that was being spoken, although it was a bit loud at times with all the clinking machinery.
“Is it too spicy?” Jiaoqiu asked idly as IPC members began falling one after the next, their legs crossed and clutching their stomachs.
“Yes.”
Jiaoqiu rolled his eyes. “Are you just saying that?”
By the way Moze stuck the next dumpling into his mouth without hesitation, Jiaoqiu would assume so. “I’ve been forced to adapt to it.”
“See? Not over-spiced.”
“Just because you don’t have taste doesn’t mean I want you to destroy mine.”
Jiaoqiu scoffed. “Please, you didn’t have taste to begin with.”
Moze lowered his binoculars to shoot a glare at his companion.
Jiaoqiu suppressed his urge to snicker.
With a grunt, Moze lifted the binoculars to his eyes again. “I thought you’d have just killed them with spice instead.”
“They actually had to ingest it, Moze.”
“So you’re cognizant of heat when feeding it to others, but not to me or the general?”
“Really, what are you whining about? Spice is a medicine in and of itself.”
“Are you saying you spice our food because you care?”
“Do you buy it?”
“Not a damn second.”
“You wound me, Moze.”
Finally, having watched the rest of the IPC lackeys either run or collapse while their loud mecha exploded due to March’s minimal efforts, Jiaoqiu lowered his binoculars, a mischievous sense of pride filling him. Another job well done.
Moze did the same. He popped the last dumpling into his mouth as he eyed the receiver, where March’s lackluster gloating rang through clear.
Skott, on the other hand, sounded rather pathetic.
Well deserved, Jiaoqiu thought, his grin widening.
“What are they whining about now?” Moze muttered. “It’s their fault for eating food without knowing the origin.”
“They took it that easily?”
Moze nodded.
“I expected them to give you a harder time.”
“You give them too much cre—”
Skott’s last whine came through the receiver, causing both men to freeze. Temptation pulling them in, both raised their binoculars just in time to see the horrified reactions to Skott’s… rather unfortunate admission.
“Jiaoqiu.”
“Yes, Moze.”
“… Just how strong did you make that medicine.”
“Why, I’d only serve the IPC the finest quality medications. Nothing below the strongest, most effective I can give.”
Moze’s sharp eyes turned on him. “And you had me taste it?”
“I told you not to eat. Don’t worry, you shouldn’t have any issue. If you haven’t yet had to do the walk of shame that man will have to do, then you’ll be just fine.” Jiaoqiu stood from his seat, lowering the binoculars as he shot Moze a tight smile. “Although, I think that if we want to avoid issues, we should take our leave.”
“I feel bad for the workers who have to clean up after that.”
“They get paid well, I’m sure.”
“Do they really get paid that well?”
“… Probably not.”
~~~
Later that evening, Jiaoqiu was placing the finishing touches on the day’s dinner when Feixiao decided to strut through the door.
Yes, strut. With purpose, with intention, with a façade of a smile covering her true emotions.
His gut twisting into a knot, Jiaoqiu spared a glance to Moze, who spared a glance at him. Only because Jiaoqiu knew Moze so well did he catch the waver of worry hidden in his stoic expression.
The general paused, her hands on her hips as she looked between the two men. “I heard through the rumor mill that there was quite the commotion in Aurum Alley today.”
“Was there?” Jiaoqiu spoke, gathering plates and chopsticks to set around the dinner table.
“Apparently, a certain IPC member had made his appearance very loudly known a couple weeks ago, only to have been causing trouble on the Luofu ever since.”
“A certain IPC member?” Moze drawled, playing oblivious. “Like we’re supposed to know who that is?”
“I would assume so.”
Jiaoqiu finished setting the table. “And pray tell, why’s that?”
Feixiao’s eyes twinkled with mirth as she tried to temper a grin. “Because, there would be no reason that a random IPC member would suddenly receive a pot of medicinal soup unless it was a certain IPC member.”
“Medicinal soup? Just what are you implying?”
“Jiaoqiu.”
In mock offence, he placed a hand over his chest, his ears falling in an attempt to look pitiful. “Do you think I’d poison them, general? The IPC have caused you so much trouble in the past that I can’t fathom doing anything to get on their bad side. The last thing we need is to be on bad terms with them.”
Feixiao quirked a brow at him. “Unless we were, hypothetically, already on bad terms.”
“Are we on bad terms with someone?” Moze asked. “I thought everything was resolved.”
At that, her amusement flatlined.
Uh-oh.
“I don’t know, Moze. I doubt you’d forget this one with the… colorful language you’ve used to describe him ever since.”
Moze suddenly glanced away. There was only so much hiding from Feixiao. The woman was not the general of the Yaoqing for nothing.
Yet, Jiaoqiu and Moze were not the retainers of the Merlin Claw for nothing, either. “General, just what rumors did you hear?” Jiaoqiu asked, hoping, likely in vain, to salvage this situation. “You’re going to have to spell it out for us.”
With a hand on her cocked hip, Feixiao looked to Jiaoqiu.
He’d been in enough contests like this one to hold his own just fine.
“Alright,” Feixiao stepped up to Jiaoqiu, slowly, smugly, and maybe a slight bit sultry. His smile grew strained for a whole new reason. “Allow me to spell it nice and clear, my dear healer.” She leaned in close, her eyes twinkling with mischief and smile wide in satisfaction.
Dammit. He needed his heart to calm down.
“Next time you leave me out of enjoying a literal shit show, you’re fired.”
A snort, one equal amounts amused and embarrassed, escaped him.
“Goes for you, too, Moze,” Feixiao tacked on, pulling away from Jiaoqiu. He breathed a sigh of relief.
“Yes, General.” The assassin bowed. “Our apologies.”
With an amused hum, Feixiao meandered into the kitchen. “You better hope I don’t get dragged into assisting the cloud knights’ investigation into a sudden case of severe food poisoning of an IPC envoy.”
“Surely not,” Jiaoqiu tried to reason, reaching for the chili oil to put the final touches on the night’s dinner.
Only for Feixiao to take the jar and walk away.
“Et tu?” Jiaoqiu muttered.
Feixiao shot him a cheeky winner’s grin. “I’d like to taste my food, thank you. Which I’m always excited to do as long as you didn’t add any special medicinal herbs to that stew, that is.”
“What healer would I be if I didn’t?” Jiaoqiu rationalized, his gaze softening as he turned towards his master. “But what I added to this pot will not turn you into the next Skott.”
“Much obliged.” As a sign of trust, she placed the chili oil back on the counter. “Now, since I wasn’t invited to watch, why don’t you tell me exactly what happened and what lead up to it. I won’t rat you boys out; I’d just like to know.”
“Absolutely, General.” Jiaoqiu garnished the food he’d so carefully crafted for his companions with herbs instead of oil. “It’s only fair you get dinner and a story, too.”
