anyway...it's actually worth noting that jiang ziya being depicted as young/youthful-looking is a pretty recent shift I've noticed in terms of his portrayals in fiction? Because even with fengshen yanyi and other stories/legends of the past, he's often depicted as an old man with long white hair and beard. it's only with like...as far as I'm aware warriors orochi and fate grand order that he's been depicted as younger looking.
[a bit on the jiang ziya movie under the cut since the second half is a bit of a spoiler]
(jiang ziya movie on the other hand kind of has an in-between bc he looks somewhat middle-aged for most of the movie and gains white hair at the climax)

Demon Performance Record (2019) 降妖功德簿
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Director: Yan Yuchao
Screenwriter: Lai Zhenghua / Hui Peng
Starring: Wang Yukai / Meng Zhanyi / Lin Fengye / Zhao Lin
Genre: Drama / Costume
Country/Region of Production: Mainland China
Language: Mandarin Chinese
Date: 2019-05-24 (Mainland China)
Type: Retelling
Summary:
Based on folklore stories, the film combines fantasy, humor, and love, and is full of freshness. It mainly tells the story of the Great God of the Big Dipper, "Tianpeng", who was demoted to the lower world for violating the rules of heaven. The heavens bestowed it with a "merit book", allowing it to travel around the world and read the stories of the common people.
Marshal Canopy (played by Wang Yukai) is brave and powerful, commanding an army of 800,000 sailors, wielding the "nine-toothed rake" and fighting the evil beast Qiongqi for three days and three nights. In the end, Qiongqi will be defeated and won a complete victory. The victory in this battle made Marshal Tianpeng act recklessly and lawlessly. He was drunk and knocked down the Jade Emperor's Bullfighting Palace. Marshal Tianpeng fell into the mortal world under the pseudonym Bian Zhuang, practiced hard all the way, fell in love with Gao Cuilan (played by Meng Zhanyi), and settled a century-old grievance with Qiongqi. After a hundred years of grievances, he finally understood what love is, what righteousness is, and completed the story of self-salvation. In addition to the "happy friends" love between Tianpeng and Gao Cuilan, the relationship between Gao Bufan (played by Lin Fengye) and Myna (played by Zhao Lin) is also a highlight in the film.

I've been researching a lot about FSYY, been eating up anything I can really find since I can't find a good English translation of it. The most I've been able to find was a summary doc. I've noticed that amongst the tumblr community, Jiang Ziya isn't talked about a lot. He's mentioned here and there and I think he's supposed to he some general during the war, but I can't find much else, and I have no idea how accurate the movie Jiang Ziya: Legend of Deification is. I was hoping you could provide an overview or analysis of who the guy is?
Our old friend, JTTW Research, has the only "complete" English translation of the novel by Gui Zhizhong on his blog.
"Complete" in quotation marks, because it left out quite a number of passages and poems and I have gripes about how it translated the Daoist names of immortals, but Gui Zhizhong's translation is still the fullest version of the story you can get.
Now, Jiang Ziya.
Much like the historical Xuanzang, Jiang Shang/Taigong Wang is a real person (probably, we can never know for sure with ancient history) who lived during the end of the Shang dynasty.
He is said to have remained poor for much of his life, into his old age. Having been divorced by his wife, he had worked as a butcher, wine-seller and servant at an inn (not necessarily in that order) before settling down in Xi Qi and becoming a fisherman.
Well, except fish isn't really what he's after. He is trying to fish up a true sovereign to work for, and that man is King Wen of Zhou.
They encounter each other while King Wen was out on a hunting trip, and together, they began to plot the downfall of the Shang dynasty (which is why in Warring States and Han dynasty works, Jiang Shang was often known as "the father of conspiracies/plotting").
He married his daughter to King Wen's son, King Wu, and as a result, is also referred to as Shangfu, "Esteemed Father".
If the Book of Poems was to be believed, he had also participated in the Battle of Muye himself, which ended the Shang dynasty:
牧野洋洋,檀车煌煌,驷騵彭彭。维师尚父,时维鹰扬。凉彼武王,肆伐大商,会朝清明。
After his victory, he was given the fief of Qi (modern Shandong) by King Wu.
Now, the historical Jiang Shang was very much known as a strategist, but later retellings had given him supernatural powers, as we tend to do to famous strategist figures like Zhuge Liang.
And the "deification" of Jiang Ziya began pretty early. The military book 六韬 that was traditionally attributed to him, has a story in which, during King Wu's campaign, five chariots had driven into the camp during a snowy day, yet left no wheel tracks on the snow.
King Wu asked Jiang Ziya who they were, and he answered that it must be the "gods of the five directions" coming to receive their orders, and summoned them in to give them their respective duties.
This is probably the earliest prototype for the "deification" story cycle.
As for Book! Jiang Ziya: He is a student of Yuanshi Tianzun who...just isn't very good at this whole "cultivation" business, having joined the Chan Sect while he was 32 and spent 40 years there without making much progress.
So Yuanshi Tianzun was like, "I'll be honest, you aren't really built for this. However, here's a chance for you to receive fame and fortune in this mortal life: the Investiture Project", then sent him down the mountain to wait for the right moment.
He went to his sworn brother, who, uh, not only generously sponsored him, but also arranged his marriage to Ma the 68-years-old virgin.
Thus began his unhappy married life, characterized by a series of businesses Ma pressured him into that all failed hilariously and forever cementing Book! Jiang Ziya's man failure vibes.
Like, even after he joined the War of Investiture proper and received some neat treasures, like the God-beating Whip that has damage bonus against people whose names are on the Investiture, and the Yellow Flag, one of four powerful magical banners, he is still destined to face "Three Calamities and Seven Deaths".
Literally. He got killed/sent into a near death state for 6-7 times, usually followed by an insta-resurrection via magical pills. And after the first couple of times, my mental image is just this:
youtube
Anyways, that funny tangent aside: because of his role as the guy chosen for the Investiture Project, in old Chinese folk religion, people often hang up Jiang Ziya's portrait, with the words "Taigong is here, all gods must step back!" (太公在,诸神回避) on it.

So. Every June, I try to challenge myself by posting something for Pride Month. For the past couple years, it's been ships with cute little pride flags. This year, the priority focus will be on the Trolls Summer Gift exchange. But at the very least I'd like to show ya'll the ones I've made in the past.
2022 bundle:
Tumblr media
Bi Hiccup x Gay Jack. Fun fact: This was the first gay couple I've ever laid my eyes on as a young child. I saw this ship and thought "I want that kind of relationship."
Tumblr media
Bi Tony x Gay Rudolph Watching the 2017 movie, these two reminded me of Luca and Alberto so much.
Tumblr media
Aro Merida You get it? Cuz she's an archer. It's funny. Laugh.
Tumblr media
Bi Nan Fang x Ace Fu Yao The headcannon was based off of a fanfic I read a while ago.
Tumblr media
Demi Ace Xie Lian x Gay Hua Cheng. I sevearly enjoyed the series. I occasionally eat fics of these two as comfort foods.
Tumblr media
Pan Xu Xuan x Trans Xiao Bai White snake was basically 2 hours of "What you are doesn't matter, it's who you are that matters", THEE Pansexual anthem, and then the second movie Turned Blanca into a guy? This is cannon.
Tumblr media
Ace Liu Qingge x Bi Shen Yuan Imma be honest. I didn't like SVSSS very much. Yandere's are not my cup of tea. And I was really hoping Shizun would have gotten with Liu-shidi instead.
Tumblr media
Gay Luca x Gay Alberto I'm so glad Luberto was actually confirmed to be somewhat cannon. Though Nowadays I see Luca as bi, cuz if we're counting the concept art as apart of the lore, then Luca had a crush on both Alberto and Giulia.
Tumblr media
Gay Jade x Gay Katie. Kate is the first character I actually felt scene as a queer person.
Tumblr media
Genderfluid Shi Qingxuan I freaking love them so much. Easily my favorite character.
Tumblr media
Aro Nezha This kid knows chaos and only chaos.
Tumblr media
Pan Adam x Gray Ace Freddy I saw this crossover on DA and thought they made so much sense together. Adam the literal personification of nature, and Freddy the unification of humanity and animals.
Tumblr media
Non-Binary Merz x Lesbian Alice These two are OCs of mine.
Tumblr media
Aro Lesbian Isabela and Aro Lesbian Elsa. I ship this in a sort of queer platonic way. Like a "we don't really want to date people, but everyone thinks we're dating, and we just don't care enough to correct them." kind of way.
Tumblr media
Genderfluid Camilo I want the ability to shapeshift so badly.
Tumblr media
Pan Ao Bing x Bi Xiao Jiu Ya'll get brownie points if you know which Ao Bing this is and double points if you know who Xiao Jiu is. Lol. It was a random crossover ship I made because the company liked to crossover their medias for advertisements, and we see the adults interacting and having fun, and Nezha joins them. But we don't see the two teenagers interact at all.
Tumblr media
Bi Verta x Bi Li Yunxiang Another crossover ship I made up cuz I didn't see a lot of Nezha Reborn and White Snake crossovers. Which surprised me, especially after Green Snake.
Tumblr media
Gay Jiang Ziya x Gay Shen Gongbao These two lived in the same house together for 10 years and adopted a daughter together. I am convinced these two are a married couple.
Tumblr media
Bi Mirabel There was a little bisexual rainbow on her dress. That's proof enough for me. Lol.
Tumblr media
Lesbian Amaya x Lesbian Janai I loved seeing their dynamic in the show.
Tumblr media
Non-Binary Kazi I love them. I'm glad they got more attention in the show.
Tumblr media
Lesbian Susie x Trans Noelle "Why does Noelle have antlers. Is she trans? The Null the Null the Null the Null..."
Tumblr media
Non-Binary Kris I love them. They literally never said a word, and I love them.
Tumblr media
AroAce Krel Based on a comic I made.
Tumblr media
Aro Blaze Another OC.
Tumblr media
Aro Douxie Idk why, but I get that vibe from him.
2023 Pack:
Tumblr media
Furry Omni Toby x Furry Demigirl Darci The moment Darci said she didn't want people to like her just because she was a girl, I felt that in my soul.
Tumblr media
Bi Steve x Pan Aja I am not convinced Steve is straight.
Tumblr media
Pan Simon x Gay Ao Bing This ship was inspired by a youtube video that had a list of crossover ships, this being on of them. And I freaking love it.
Tumblr media
AroAce Sun Wukong and AroAce Tang Sanzang In Monkey King Reborn, out of everyone in the friend group, you can just tell that these two cared about each other the most. And I think that's just sweet.
Fuck. I can only have 30 images per post. I'll reblog with the rest of the 2023 pack.

This has Nezha and Ao Bing from Nezha (2019). So I really like the movie Inside Out, and I’ve also heard of Sander’s Side where they are manifestations of particular aspects of personality, and I watched this small animation short where introversion and extroversion are personified and battling inside this guy’s brain. What would happen if the emotions, (happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear) extroversion, introversion, and different personality aspects in Nezha’s brain were personified and worked behind a control panel inside Nezha’s brain? The aspects I think would be Rebel Nezha, Prankster / Jester Nezha, Noble Guardian Nezha, Parent Figure Nezha, Painful Truth Nezha. What about Sun Wukong? Ao Bing? Yang Jian? Jiang Ziya? And the rest of the Monkie Kid Gang.
It's an interesting thought.
I have seen concepts similar to Sanders Sides used for MK in LMK regarding how his clones seem to be exaggerated aspects of his personality. MK "splitting" himself up into his clones so his busy brain can work things out. Think the song "Rythhm Redux" from Sander's Side to get the idea of an internal fight.
Nezha having a similar situation would be an interesting idea - either as a mediation technique or as a result of a magical arifact. Nezha needing to "talk it out" with himself before deciding something he deems important.
However, I can imagine with so many different Nezha's arguing with one another, it quickly becomes a scene of chaos.
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong probably could have a discussion with a hundred of his hair-clones and they all come to the same conclussion because he's known aspects of his personality for centuries.
Ao Bing likely has two major aspects of personality; Loyal Student vs Wistful Child. Part of him that wishes to continue studying under Shen Gongbao vs the part thats still a child that grew up too fast.
It would be interesting for Erlang/Yang Jian to have a situation where he himself tries "talking it out" with the aspects of his personalities, only to be overrun with parts of his mind he has long since discarded. Like the part that's a scared child who simply wanted his mother back.

you’re so right i just got out of the theater and investiture of the gods SLAPPED HARD
It’s an amazing movie with beautiful design, acting and atmosphere, and the effort and skill and love that went into it is so starkly apparent - especially because this is an adaption of INVESTITURE OF THE GODS, which seemed for thee longest time to be impossible to adapt as movies. Many poor adaptions focus too much on the spectacle of gods and demons, but Creation of Gods knew the gods and demons were written into this real historical chapter to represent the struggles and turmoil of humans. It’s really a story about fathers and sons. The good father and son relationship that will foster a king, a king who will be a good father to his people in turn. What is a king if not a father, with duty and love for his people. In comparison to the toxic father and son relationship that gives rise to a tyrant, a tyrant king who eats his own sons, who really eats his own people. It’s staggering how good this movie was and how it got to be made.
I really love how they changed up the archetypical and frankly lazy interpretations of Yin Shou/ Zhou Wang as just a neglectful and gluttonous King, seduced and puppeted by Daji the fox demon. Creation of the Gods said no, Yin Shou is authentically a terrible man who was always going to become a uniquely bad despot with or without evil fox magics, and he has full autonomy over the many awful actions. (The entire hostage-son setup was also just a very smart way to exert political control, and maintain power in a personal cult of personality and family cult, making Yin Shou not only a skilled general but a great strategist.) He’s a great villain. And because he’s so good at what he does, it’s genuinely riveting to see and understand how Ji Fa can break away from that indoctrination through his real father and best friend/brother.
The actor for Ji Chang, Ji Fa’s elderly father and Duke of the West, in my opinion, was the highlight actor of this entire movie. He sold that prison food scene. He, forgive me, ATE. This actor is like almost completely deaf and he ate that role up like the absolute artist he is. His name is Li Xuejian (李雪健) and he was just on another level.
I felt that the actress for Daji was pitch perfect and she didn’t dominate the story like other adaptions. Her motivations being genuine adoration and gratitude for Yin Shou is similar to the 2003 Nezha tv show, which was very welcome for me. She really does feel like a cold body being possessed by a fox, a very unsettling allure.
Of course this movie has Jiang Ziya, Erlang Shen and Nezha in their earlier days. I enjoyed their how hilariously removed they seemed to be from mortals, overpowered fish out of water but taking their jobs Seriously. This is probably the most coolest and faithful adaption of live action Nezha EVER - I WAS SCREAMING AT YHE WAY THE WIND FIRE WHEELS AND ARMILLARY SASH WERE DEPICTED - NEZHA FLYING ON THE WIND FIRE WHEELS WAS AMAZING!!!
Again, the movie’s main narrative is so compelling and quite dark, that the three national heroes, Jiang Ziya, Erlang Shen and Nezha (each who have headlined their own animated movies in the last 4 years,) could be COMIC RELIEF.
AND IT WAS GREAT!

thinking again about how the one reason I look forward to fgo tunguska's release is bc of jiang ziya also being added to the game
like genuinely I know fgo doesn't necessarily do enough with his character (which is a surprise I'm sure /s), but there's so much they could do with what they did give (his "too clever by half" moments while genuinely being smart in various ways, his various moments of genuine compassion and capability of immediately making up for mistakes while expressing genuine remorse...), and even if they don't embark on digging into that, I definitely will (when I can find the muse to write proper fics)

What are the inspirations for your art style?
I always grew up with an anime influence cause’ I was sooo obsessed as a kid! Now I’m in love with aesthetics like Manhua and movies like Jiang Ziya! I also love classical + historical art and could eat it!

Reading your other post, you mean jiang ziya legend of deification?? That's one of my favorites!
Most people say he looks like an animated version of Keanu Reeves 😭
If you would like to see movies based on fsyy, there is Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms. I liked it a lot. From what I've heard, fsyy is difficult to adapt, so the movie was liked by many people and will most likely have a sequel. Nezha and Erlang also appear in the movie!
YES THAT ONE!! i've been meaning to watch it oml i can't believe this man is going to take over my BRAIN just like Erlang and SWK did LMAO
for Kingdom of Storms I couldn't find a version with english subs :( i really want to watch it because i'm interested in seeing how they portray the war + Daji and then how they handle Erlang (i saw a GLIMPSE and i'm side-eyeing them a little /pos)
ough i hear it's going to be a saga? so i'm excited for that. i just wish i had someplace to watch it 😭😭

welcome to my JttW and chinese animations and mythology sideblog! my focus on it comes and goes so i'll let you know when turning on notifications to know when i'm posting again might be a good idea.
while this blog is mainly focused on JttW, I'll bring up other stories and legends, like Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi) or Lotus Lantern (Bao Lian Deng). this is also for Chinese animations and series as I find and explore them, and i'll occasionally do livereads of books, especially academic ones.
follow me over at my main @sparrow-in-boots if you'd like my more assorted interests <3

AU info and tags below!
#Expedition to the West au
my take on JttW if it was (more or less) rooted in the real world and the historical Xuanjang's journey. follows mostly the plot beats as outlined by @journeytothewestresearch's article, so giving it a read will help contextualize where I diverge or fill in empty spaces with my own takes and ideas. full props to OP, their research has been an immense help and inspiration!!
#Sun clan au
[CHARACTER DIRECTORY] started as my own version of giving Wukong a mother figure, now it's me fleshing out the monkey population of Huaguoshan with ocs to explore Wukong's bonds and filial piety, as well as the repercussions of his actions. expect a lot of family fluff AND angst!
note that both AUs are somewhat connected but I'll tag them separately as needed.
#Havoc in Midgard au
God of War/JttW crossover AU. Linked to my Fimbulvintr Blues AU where Atreus and Mimir are kicked back into the far past of Kratos' Spartan General days, and have to catch up to his current time the long way. I'm focusing mostly on his trips across the continents and pantheons as he retrieves the giants hidden there by Týr and slowly but surely acquires a veritable arsenal of magical artifacts, special powers and baffling alliances. And of course, his short but chaotic stint in the Three Kingdoms during the time of both Wukong's youth and the entirety of the Investiture of the Gods.
