292: Various Artists // Abstract Magazine Issue 5
Abstract Magazine Issue 5 Various Artists 1985, Sweatbox Just got up to flip the record after sitting cross-legged on the couch typing on my laptop for quite a bit, not realizing my leg had fallen asleep until I tried to plant on it and had to pinwheel my arms to keep from falling flat out and cracking my head into my turntable. Absolutely how the coroner will shoot my body someday too, ass-naked and alone on the floor of my apartment, surrounded by instruments I can’t play and books I haven’t gotten to, bleeding into my record collection with a scythe propped sardonically against the wall in the background.
Speaking of ignominious deaths, while doing some research on the compiler of today’s record, a post-punk compilation / fanzine combo from 1985, the first thing that came up was a 2007 post from Burl Veneer’s old Typepad blog, specifically this inimitable sentence: “Abstract was the brainchild of Rob Deacon, who died last month in a canoeing accident at age 42 (same as me).” Strange nautical coincidence that, and a neat trick for Burl to keep blogging after death too (in fact, he’s still at it here on Tumblr), but I kept link hopping, and have learned that Deacon was quite a special guy, and a pivotal figure in two or three generations of UK music.
youtube
There’s genuine fondness and grief in The Guardian obit, the kind they reserve for lesser-known people who busted their asses and made a difference behind the scenes in media, and they spell out a resume I’m a little ashamed not to have been more up on. He was in his late teens when he started Abstract magazine, profiling the cream of the post-punk crop and cajoling exclusive tracks out of a bunch of them. Abstract would eventually morph into his own label, the influential Sweatbox, but the magazine + compilation bug stuck with him, and he’d go on to start the CD-era Volume series, which moved real numbers for an indie comp and featured… Jesus, everybody, apparently. He followed that up with the groundbreaking Trance Europe Express and Trance Atlantic electronic compilations, became a dance night impresario, did music photography, started a label (Deviant)… and then he fell out of his fuckin’ boat. Damn.
Abstract #5 is a real time capsule of 1985, featuring songs and interviews with the likes of Swans, Gene Loves Jezebel, Cindytalk, Colourbox, and the Jazz Butcher, interspersed with record reviews, scene reports, comics and more. The written pieces are all over the place stylistically, some transcribed in a borderline-incoherent fashion, others fighting for their lives against the adventurous two-tone printed layouts, but it has a wonderful fanzine energy and a level of ballsy spite you don’t see much these days.
Nearly every artist has a bone to pick with their label or journalists or bands they used to like that sold out or fans who have any sort of expectations of them. (The editorial pages get into it too, describing Morrissey “prancing daffodilously” and previewing a new New Order tune called “I’ve Got a Cock Like the M1,” which would see daylight as “The Perfect Kiss.”)
It’s zany and vulnerable and, even just shy of 40 years later, totally inspiring stuff. Highlights include Swans’ Michael Gira’s typically serial killer-coded interview, in which he talks about watching TV for 14 hours a day and shares the trans body horrific lyrics to a song called “BASTARD” that would eventually come out during the band’s maniac 1986; an account from industrial music pioneers Test Dept of the ’84 miner’s strike in South Wales, with a photo of one member who appears to have two sets of upper teeth like a shark; and the 400 Blows talking about having recorded their contribution to the issue in an echoing drainage pipe in which they nearly became trapped and drowned.
Musically this is by design a mixed bag (side one is kind of the uncommercial, experimental bits; side two the peppier guitar pop stuff). None of these exclusives would make anyone’s definitive collection of any of these bands, but as a complete listening and reading experience, Abstract #5 is a beautiful celebration. Cheers to Rob.

Click the Clicks You Want to See in the World
The podcast I was listening to was about the crisis in journalism – about how so many news sites were disappearing, how so many journalists are losing their jobs and about how the landscape was changing so dramatically and not for the better. (This country has lost one third of its newspapers and two thirds of its journalists since 2005 and it is accelerating.) I was only half listening – truth…

The asexual experience for white people is not the same for racially and ethnically marginalized people. Black aces and other asexuals of color must fight against stereotypes like the Jezebel, the Mammy, the China doll or the Geisha Girl, or the desexualized Asian male trope that have historically stripped our personhood of any nuance. Therefore, the insecurities we harbor that prevent many from even identifying within the community are valid.
Yes, diversifying spaces online and IRL can be hard. As the ace community continues to grow, BIPOC aces speaking on our experiences should be listened to and affirmed by white aces and all allosexual people alike. White aces with platforms in the community and beyond should especially “take the initiative to actively address anti-Blackness, they need to credit the Black aces they learn from, and they need to acknowledge the fact of that their whiteness helps to propel their careers,” Sherronda explains in the same interview. As even within the ace community, Black and POC asexuals often endure the harm of white supremacy and/or racial antagonism with little to no defense or solidarity from white asexuals.
BIPOC aces should know that we have long deserved better than the colonization of our sexuality. Societal myths, racial stereotypes, and tropes shouldn’t dictate our perception of ourselves. Luckily, in our broad understanding of (a)sexuality, we have many of the tools, knowledge, and resources to begin shifting narratives of sexuality that can ultimately benefit all people of color, whether they’re self-identified as asexual or not.

Susan Rinkunas at Jezebel:
Donald Trump’s new interview with Time magazine underscores the bleak consequences of what it really means to “leave abortion to the states.” Faced with questions about whether he’d enact a nationwide abortion ban, Trump has been running around claiming that he thinks abortion should be left to the states—but also criticizing state bans he considers too extreme, like those in Florida and Arizona. It’s a totally incoherent stance: Does he support states’ rights or not? He’s likely triangulating because he doesn’t want political blowback for laws that voters think are too extreme. But in a new interview, Trump blessed the most extreme effort states could take: Arresting women and pregnant people who have abortions in violation of state law.
Time magazine’s Eric Cortellessa spoke to Trump earlier this month and asked him how he’d govern if he wins the presidency in November. The reporter pressed Trump on abortion laws at both the state and federal level, given Trump’s Truth Social video where he seemed to suggest that he wouldn’t support federal legislation banning abortion, but also didn’t say he would veto such bills. Cortellessa wrote that Trump “decline[d] to commit to vetoing any additional federal restrictions if they came to his desk.” So there’s that! Then Cortellessa asked Trump specifically about whether states could monitor pregnancies and prosecute women who they believe have gotten abortions despite state bans, rather than just doctors who might provide them. Trump said states might arrest women and it’s their prerogative—but he’s staying out of it.
[...] Back to Trump’s interview, a reporter with access finally asked Trump about the Comstock Act, a dormant 19th-century law that conservative activists want him to enforce that would ban the mailing of abortion pills, and potentially all supplies to abortion clinics. Trump said he would make a statement on abortion pills and the Comstock Act within one to two weeks, but these interviews were done more than two weeks ago. (In a follow-up call on April 27, Trump told Cortellessa: “I’ll be doing it over the next week or two. But I don’t think it will be shocking, frankly.”) I guess we get to wait and see.
In a pair of interviews with Time recently, Donald Trump said that he'll permit states to surveil pregnancies and prosecute pregnant people for violating abortion bans. He also said that he's going to make a statement on the Comstock Act soon.
Trump's interview with Time in which he basically supports state laws punishing people who have abortions is why we must re-elect Joe Biden. He would support a federal ban on abortion if given the chance, despite claiming to have a "leave it to the states" stance.

In Memoriam: grab a teasing comb, can of Aqua Net and rat your hair up like a teenage Jezebel today in tribute to Margaret Vinci Heldt (11 February 1918 - 10 June 2016) – the inventor of perhaps the all-time greatest female hairdo, the beehive! As The Guardian’s 2016 obituary explained, “The beehive – a tall, conical woman’s hairstyle – became a cultural phenomenon during the 1960s and evolved into a style worn for decades as Hollywood’s starlets walked red carpets. Heldt created it at the request of a hairstyling magazine that published images of it in February 1960 and called it “the beehive” because it resembles the shape of a traditional hive … Heldt said the inspiration for the hairstyle came from a little black velvet hat, shaped like a small bump, and lined inside with red lace. Heldt went downstairs to her family room one night while her family was sleeping. She put on music and started working with hair atop a mannequin head. The magazine article described the hairdo as a “tall wraparound crown, creating a circular silhouette with high-rise accents.”” Over the decades variations of the beehive have been memorably worn by Brigitte Bardot, Jayne Mansfield, The Ronettes (pictured), Priscilla Presley, Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson of new wave band the B-52’s, Amy Winehouse, Lana Del Rey, Trixie Mattel – and Marge Simpson! We are forever in Margaret Vinci Heldt’s debt!

Drat, I just realized that I let the 10-year anniversary of my first seeing Scott Alexander's writing pass unrecognized by me. It must have been, most likely, January 13th, 2014 that a distant Facebook friend (likely friended from certain philosophical-discourse-ish Facebook groups years earlier but I already couldn't remember; we've certainly never met) posted Scott's Slate Star Codex essay "A Response to Apophemi on Triggers".
Mind you, this isn't the most important 10-year anniversary for me this year, as I didn't follow up on learning who Scott Alexander was or familiarizing myself with Less Wrong or the rationalist community until my spring semester was over several months later, sometime in May 2014, and I didn't (re)adopt the handle Liskantope and start participating in any way until a couple of months later still. When I first read "a response to Apophemi" ten years ago, I'm not sure I registered the name of the author, and I distinctly remember assuming that Slate Star Codex was some sort of community blog or forum, perhaps through glancing at the archives and seeing an implausible number of posts for only one author, and more likely because most of my exposure to "the blogosphere" had been through community blogs / online magazines / something of that sort (e.g. Feministing, Jezebel, Freethought Blogs). But reading a blog post like that was an absolute revelation to me, and I still have fairly vivid memories of some of my thought processes as I went through it section by section. I recall forcefully filing it away in my mind as "I need to follow up on the source of this to see if there's more, but not until this new semester is over and I have more time."
The revelation for me came from not only the (honestly rather earthshaking) event of this being the first article I ever read (as opposed to the occasional poorly-calibrated Facebook comment from that one friend) arguing against the general SJ mentality of the time (I was introduced to the term "Social Justice" through this essay and had internally been referring to it by several other terms up until that time; "woke" wouldn't show up until several years later), and eloquently at that, and not seeming to come from a conservative or otherwise obnoxious viewpoint. It was also that I had just never encountered anyone who wrote quite like this, with so much genuine politeness and compassion for the other party whose views they were arguing against and yet so rhetorically forceful against them at the same time, with a particular combination of intellectual meticulousness, and easy-to-read, semi-informal, lightness to the writing style, through which the general good character of the writer palpably comes through.
(Well, the brief paragraph about "hoisting the black flag" is pretty sinister actually, and I prefer to think that Scott was being carelessly hyperbolic. I don't think I took any notice of it on the first or second reading during 2014, though. At the time I had no idea who the "Heartiste" was that Scott was referring to.)
It's always interesting to reread something from a full decade ago and think about how long that is in "internet years" and how ways of talking about certain things has changed. Scott used the ze/zir pronouns which were (unfortunately) still very popular at the time but, as I recall, not for much longer, and he switched to they/them within a few months of this. He seems to use transsexual interchangeably with transgender (as I remember I kind of did at the time as well) and even used cissexual, which I didn't recall was ever a word. And, of course, although he discussed racism as a name-calling word quite a bit, he basically used "SJ" and "feminism" quite interchangeably, reflecting a perception I shared throughout the first half of the 2010's of SJ being essentially equivalent to (the popular internet form of) feminism.
It's still kind of a mystery to me exactly who Apophemi was. Okay, looking back at their post that Scott was responding to, it seems they were also going by Cyrus Alexander, and were an Oberlin student at the time. But, given that once I got into rationalist community stuff a few months later, I basically never heard anything about them again, and their Wordpress blog's most recent update is from only half a year later, I have to wonder what it is about their blog or this particular essay demanded so much of Scott's attention. Apophemi's post isn't even particularly substantial or hard-hitting or well-written; why did it carry so much weight? Was it just that Apophemi was directly attacking the rationalist community and got a critical number of shares and reblogs? Was Apophemi just a temporarily famous figure in that corner of the online world, rather like the Tumblr-user Hotel Concierge was for a brief period around a year later before becoming almost forgotten? It is interesting that only two (arguably three, counting Ozy, mentioned multiple times not by name in Scott's piece) characters were involved in the first big controversial rat-community-related essay I was exposed to, and then one of them immediately and permanently disappeared from my view.
EDITED TO ADD: I also forgot to mention that Scott's "response to Apophemi" explicitly describes the cancellation attempt against him when he was editor of his college newspaper, and as far as I know, this is the earliest time Scott explicitly talked about this traumatic life event (except that he probably talked about it in his LiveJournal at the time it happened, but as he had locked the pre-college-graduation period of his LJ right before I came across it -- likely primarily because of this incident! -- I and most others have never seen it). He (understandably!) pretty much never mentioned it so explicitly again in the next decade, so my very first introduction to Scott included knowing this about him while I don't think that many among his bulk of later fans did. But it's an interesting (probable) coincidence that, as of several days ago, he first described the event again in his January 24th post on trauma/politics, ten years later to the month.

Cloudless Sulphur Butterfly Prophecy And Symbolism
The Following Channel is from higher powers, Divine, the ancestral plane and is prophetic through Quornesha S. Lemon|
Whether the Cloudless Sulphur Butterfly appears in dreams, visions, waking life or synchronicities, it is a sign and message that the migration into your promised land has commenced. No one can hijack a ride into what’s yours. Ending Kairos and entering into Jubilee and divine justice. Ending warfare and entering into rest. Celebrate. I heard no more robbing peter to pay Paul. No more apparition against you. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Wealth transfer. Dynamic eagle. This new season will be dynamite for you and your family. You will join a new family. No one can replace you. Make a bucket list. God will surely lengthen that list over time. There have been a lot of jezebel spirits trying to hate on you.
Wishing they were in your place. But neither of them can take what's yours. Divine will put them in the same trouble you had to go through to get where you've achieved. Their tongues will experience plagues. Your dreams are manifesting. And you'll see more dreams. Prophetic. Your face will be on/in magazines. There’s no competitive or petty people in the promised land but a coming together and abundantly overflowing energy. It’s blissful. A heaven on earth. The Cloudless Sulphur is a prophecy for you to get ready for business(es) to thrive and employ many people and usher in divine justice that has been long overdue. No more elite groups. An end has come and a new order has taken place. A righteouse dvine order. Where prosperity is easy and wealth obtainable. You’ll never have to worry about homelessnes, poverty, fatal sickness, threat/harm/danger, no evil can come near you.
The Enemy wants you to quit, but turn to them and tell them, take shelter, I am coming in like a storm. You know divine/God personally and your enemies are his enemies. Mother God/Divine supports you. You are not darkness you have authority over it. There’s a difference. The Cloudless Sulphur is a prophecy that the storm is over for the chosen ones. The times in the Kairo season is over and the Divine both he and she are proud of you. They want you to know, that the end has come for every enemy. They don’t have to take your name off of their altars, nor keep their name out of your mouth. Your aura glows differently and the enemy can never be you. So God is destroying every home, altar, temple, closet, fasting prayer group that has come against you. They will come out naked, confused, and dismantled as nature has been issued the approval to attack and undermine the enmies plans. The divine says he’s thinking of sending in a huge hurricane. This one, unprecedented. This one, will set the enemy back a decade. It’s not so fun now, attacking a chosen one .
You’re under heavy protection now. You’re surrounded by the fiery wall of protection. There’s still work to do in the promised land. People need stimulation constantly and the divine is sending them to you. Your heart is pure. Your soul leads the way for people. And you’re about to become very rich, successful, married, elevated and approved all at once. The Divine is covering you on every side. Your enemies are setting themselves up to be located by the wrath of the divine with your name in their mouths. And the energy syphoning, the same demons that you overcame are on your side and will contend with them and the tests you overcame will overtake the enemy and destruction will be on every side until they loose you and even if they don’t they’re digging their own grave.
You’re walking on the shoulders of 10,000 ancestors and angels and counting. You have nothing to fear. You have a lot of work to do in this lifetime, so, thus said the Divine, NOTHING, NO ONE, NO ENTITY, can ever take you out prematurely. You are deaths’ companion, and attacks against you places the enemies’ names on deaths’ list. They dug one ditch for you, but two are being dug for them. It’s not so fun now, coming up against you. Now they have to pick up the pieces. The key of the bone yard are gifted to you. Power over the heavens, given to you. Power over the hospitals and death beds, given to you. Power in the spirit given to you. You’ll rebuke demons and they will flee from you and those you help. Keep going servant God is well pleased with you. Don’t give up on you. Don’t give in, carry on. Wherever you’ve been chained up in this lifetime, you’re being loosed right now. Your clarity in the spirit is needed before kings, and you will be seated amongst and known, as Royalty yourself. The Cloudless Sulphur Butterfly is a promise that a new day dawns and symbolizes the promises of God/Divine performing in your life. Greater horizons are coming in, and you cannot be stopped. The sword of humility is with you.
This message isn't, obviously resonant with all whose paths it crosses, as perhaps you may encounter someone of this vernacular, mastery or skill. Therefore, it is a sign from the universe that you're meant to work with such a person.
Need further clarity or your own queries answered? Book your own reading as my schedule is full and I do not guarantee a reply on social media regarding this post.
If this is not you, then it is time to get clear to rejoin your tribe or the rest of the world of infinite beings. It's time to bring your light to the forefront. This synchronicity can possibly have specific meanings for you, it's time to get insight.

Leveraging misogyny to cover up sexual harassment
youtube
First, start with the man who presented himself as an advocate for emotionally healthy men and masculinity - this is from 2023 sit-down with 'The Tamron Hall Show':
Justin Baldoni’s Mission to Redefine Masculinity in Modern Times
Then fast forward to the pre release marketing for the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel It Ends With Us, produced and directed by Baldoni. From What Happened on the Set of ‘It Ends With Us’?, posted on August 8, 2024:
A TikToker discovered that Lively, Jenny Slate, et al no longer follow Baldoni on Instagram, and fans have noticed that he’s been absent from all of the press appearances with the cast. Any promotion he has done has been by himself.
Social media scrutiny and speculation started the conversation. Misogyny and engagement shaped the conversation to target Blake Lively as the reason for the on-set issues. From But does it end with a win?, posted on August 13, 2024:
...but literally all the women involved in the project, and even a woman who isn’t involved in the project but who knows both Blake and Justin (Liz Plank), are not f-cking with this man. Which in any other circumstance is a red flag, right?! But not here. Here people are pointing to Blake’s florals and her haircare line and the way she’s been talking about the movie and supposedly not raising awareness about domestic violence, and labelling her the big villain. What makes this situation different?
Lively was targeted in such a way that people eager to remember their grievances against her previous missteps added to the chorus. A bombardment that took factual information (cast members not following Baldoni online) and spun it into a disparagement campaign.
So the movie is a hit - via The Hollywood Reporter....
Box Office Milestone: ‘It Ends With Us’ Is Top-Grossing Romantic Drama Since 2018’s ‘A Star is Born’ The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling book about a woman who reclaims her life after ending an abusive marriage has amassed more than $300M in global ticket sales.
....while Lively had to deal with her character and reputation being attacked. Via Guardian:
For weeks, she was eviscerated online by millions on TikTok, X and Instagram – by some for failing to grasp the film’s message about the cycle of domestic violence (and simultaneously promoting her haircare line and her husband, Ryan Reynolds’ gin brand), but by many, many more for simply giving off bad vibes. There was always something off about her, they concurred.
Eventually the hyper scrutiny and targeting did die down as news orgs, engagement and misogyny trolls moved on to the next story. Another marker of how culture targets women for existing for themselves.
And then on December 21, the NY Times story announces that Lively filled a legal complaint alleging sexual harassment, hostile workplace and a retaliation campaign.
