Attend The Tale of Sweeney Todd

Backstory:

Was drawn to watch Sweeney Todd (2007 film) before because of its star-studded cast. Imagine Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, and Jamie Campbell Bower in one film! A musical film!! I was so intrigued and excited! It. Did. Not. Disappoint.

Come 2019, it was announced that ST is coming to Manila!! Top-billed by Jett Pangan, Lea Salonga, Nyoy Volante, Gerald Castro and produced by Atlantis as a celebration of their 20th Anniversary! We were able to get tix at the balcony (medyo likod na) dated October 25, 2019. WHAT A PERFORMANCE!!! *slow clap

‘Twas Dec. 17, 2022 when I found out that there’s gonna be a 3rd revival of Sweeney Todd on Broadway. When I saw the line up, I was DEAD!!!! I said shucks gusto ko manood!!!! Puntirya ko talaga makita in the flesh si Josh Groban, Jordan Fisher, and of course Gaten Matarazzo!!! Just a pipe dream atm because we really have no plans of going abroad. Then came this invitation from a friend, and surprisingly everybody agreed to come and meet us (more reason for us to go). I was thinking at that time, whoa everything lined up. So, we’re a GO! Sadly, JF left early last June 18, 2023. And we actually missed to see Gaten too!!! Iyak na lang eh. Should have I known that his last performance will be on November 5, we would’ve booked the tix on that date!!!

Nonetheless, our baliw magastos generous friend suddenly booked front row tickets on November 9, 2023. Annnd BLOODY HELL, the show was revengefully amazing!!!! Annaleigh Ashford was such a scene stealer and no one could have done it better than Josh Groban!! After the show, a big crowd was already waiting outside the theatre. Even though we didn’t get the chance to really talk and have our photo-ops with the cast (unlike Hamilton), we were able to see them up close and let them sign our playbills.

Thank you for Sweeney Todd, Mr. Stephen Sondheim (mainly, but also 2M2M). Revenge theatre for this revenge travel by some revengeful hoomans. 😉❤️🖤

In less than a day, this poll has accrued more votes than the most popular poll from last week earned throughout that entire time. And it is a nailbiter.

So, I think we as a website are finally ready for the real Mrs. Lovett vs. Mrs. Lovett discourse.

Despite their wildly different typecasts, Christine Baranski and Lea Salonga do have one role in common, and it's one of the theatre canon greats. The chatty, scatterbrained, fiendishly clever Mrs. Lovett from Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. They aren't the only Divas in our tournament to pick up the rolling pin (but more on that at a later date).

Christine has played the role twice, first in 1999 opposite Kelsey Grammar in the LA Reprise! concert production, and again in 2002 at the Kennedy Center opposite Broadway's Leading Man Brian Stokes Mitchell. For the later, Mary Beth Peil starred as the Beggar Woman.

Lea has also taken on this role on two separate occasions. Technically. Her first starring turn as Mrs. Lovett was for the 2019 Manilla production opposite Jet Pangan. She again stepped into the role for the Sweeney Todd segments of Sondheim's Old Friends (2023) this past year in the West End with Jeremy Secomb as Sweeney. Bernadette Peters was also lurking in the wings.

Each Diva received rave reviews across the board. For Lea, this was an opportunity to step outside her ingenue typecast to showcase her phenomenal versatility. For Christine, she brought a mischievously sexy high-camp Mrs. Lovett to the party long before Annaleigh Ashford even graduated high school.

Of the experience, Mary Beth Peil said, "It was heaven. It was like going to church every day... And to watch Christine be given permission to be as sexy and primal as she was...I sat in rehearsals, [staring] cross-legged, knitting. I was knitting an afghan for J. Smith Cameron's baby that got longer and longer...I never went home from rehearsals, I just sat and watched [Chris Ashley, the director] work wiht these two gigantic talents... I have goosebumps just talking about it." (Here's to the Ladies (2023)).

Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1B

Lea Salonga (1971) made history in 1991 as the youngest performer to ever win Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Miss Saigon. She was just twenty years old at the time, and now all these years later, she qualifies for our MILF tournament. Lea has starred in six Broadway shows including Les Miserables (as first Eponine and then later Fantine), Once On This Island (2017), and most recently a brief stint in Here Lies Love (2023). She is also the singing voice for Disney's Mulan.

Diva, icon, certified GILF Christine Baranski (1952) has a theatre resume a mile long. A two-time Tony winner, Christine has performed on and off-Broadway, regionally, and internationally in shows such as Mame at the Kennedy Center, the pre-Broadway workshop of Sunday in the Park with George, and the infamous flop that was Nick & Nora (1991). She can be seen alongside a slew of other Broadway Divas in HBO's The Gilded Age, and has also participated in at least ten Sondheim shows and concerts over the years.

Hello! So as far as we know we have Lea Salonga as Mrs. Lovett, Jett Pangan as Sweeney Todd, and Nyoy Volante as Pirelli (you might have seen him on asiantheatre before when he starred in kinky boots).

It’s weird because tickets are now on sale but we don’t have info on who else is in the cast. I couldn’t find their website either. I think they exclusively do it through ticketworld now and it doesn’t have more cast info.

We’ll update if there’s more news!

Demon Barber of Fleet Street I haven’t seen Phantom of the Opera because I don’t know the story (and it’s way more expensive) but still I saw this (even though I haven’t seen the Depp/Bonham-Carter film) just because friends tagged me along. Unfortunately for them something came up and I had to find a replacement buddy to watch or I’ll end up alone. Good thing, Jayse’s leave was approved hahah. Sweeney Todd is a tale of revenge and if you know me, I love a Marimar storyline hahah. Though there isn’t a “pulutin mo ang kwintas sa putik gamit ang iyong bibig” eksena, revenge was served piping hot. Creatively, if I may add. I’m always on edge when the lights turn red hahah. The cast is outstanding. Jett Pangan is kinda Valjean in my imagination i guess. Lea Salonga delivers the lines, melodies, and pies hahah and some Helena Bonham Carter realness. I like Gerald Santos as Anthony (he doesn’t sound Brit though) and Mikki Bradshaw-Volante as Johanna (though i could tell her weave is fake even from the balcony hahah). Nyoy Volante as Pirelli is fun to watch. And Luigi Quesada is a standout for me especially with his ballad Not While I’m Around. I cried literally. I felt the emotions hehe.
