Demon Barber of Fleet Street I haven’t seen Phantom of the Opera because I don’t know the story (and it’s way more expensive) but still I saw this (even though I haven’t seen the Depp/Bonham-Carter film) just because friends tagged me along. Unfortunately for them something came up and I had to find a replacement buddy to watch or I’ll end up alone. Good thing, Jayse’s leave was approved hahah. Sweeney Todd is a tale of revenge and if you know me, I love a Marimar storyline hahah. Though there isn’t a “pulutin mo ang kwintas sa putik gamit ang iyong bibig” eksena, revenge was served piping hot. Creatively, if I may add. I’m always on edge when the lights turn red hahah. The cast is outstanding. Jett Pangan is kinda Valjean in my imagination i guess. Lea Salonga delivers the lines, melodies, and pies hahah and some Helena Bonham Carter realness. I like Gerald Santos as Anthony (he doesn’t sound Brit though) and Mikki Bradshaw-Volante as Johanna (though i could tell her weave is fake even from the balcony hahah). Nyoy Volante as Pirelli is fun to watch. And Luigi Quesada is a standout for me especially with his ballad Not While I’m Around. I cried literally. I felt the emotions hehe. #Bagman. Arjo Atayde left such a big impression on me from BuyBust as Biggie Chen and as soon as I saw the preview of this new series on Netflix, I immediately added it to my list. Bagman is about Benjo who's a barber-turned-fixer (or in this case bagman) trying his best to earn a living for his family. What started out as an easy source of money by doing favors for a local politician, he soon discovers how dangerous the game he's playing really was. As someone who doesn't watch as much local TV the past couple of years, I was immediately onboard after seeing the poster of Bagman with @arjoatayde as the lead. Had no expectations whatsoever about the series so I just rolled with it. I mean, this is Arjo we're talking about so it's a definite must-try. Surely, I was not disappointed. From the first episode alone, it got my attention as it showed fast cuts of the season ahead. As the story unfolded, I felt like I was watching On The Job and Smaller and Smaller Circles. It's a very political show where you see the inner workings of a government that's in cahoots with the police, church, transport groups, even the media. Bagman has got balls -- the language, the duality of the community members, even the real-ness of the issues like bribery, blackmail, career assassination, corruption, red tape, murder, name it. I'm just surprised that this isn't making much noise, given the country's current political landscape. Aside from capturing the authentic local power struggle, the storytelling is just as impressive because it goes against the typical mainstream route. They leave clues, plant seeds, and intelligently use flashbacks to create tension and deepen the narrative. The payoff? Very much rewarding. What makes the series exceptional is the cast particularly Arjo, Raymond Bagatsing as Gov. Art, Yayo Aguila as Atty. Alex who are the main proponents of the plot. Also, Jett Pangan as Big Boy and Allan Paule as Cito. They're all so brilliant which is why I think the series turned out so well. It's uncommon for us to have local shows like this so when one comes our way, we support it.
