“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest”

This is not something new. The Old Testament is full of references to the “rest” of God which is pictured by “rest” in the promised land (Isaiah 28:12; Jeremiah 31:25 etc), which in turn points to the “rest” of eternal life (Hebrews 4:9–11).

However, here in Matthew 11 Jesus has a particular aspect of the “rest” in mind. He offers those who will come to him, “rest” from the weariness and burden of the ‘yoke’ which enslaves them. This ‘yoke’ is that of the Law, falsely imposed on them by the Pharisees as a way of salvation and acceptance with God. This legal system, with all its detailed regulations, was truly wearisome and burdensome!

By contrast, Christs own ‘yoke’ is that of discipleship to the Messiah and to his teaching. It is not the Old Testament itself that Jesus is criticizing, but the particular interpretation of the leaders of Israel, getting people to check off the Law as a way of salvation, which of course is a very cruel system due to the impossibility of anyone to keep the Law perfectly as God wants it kept.

So in contrast to the leadership of the church in Jesus’ day, Jesus is “gentle and humble in heart” and Jesus says “My yoke is easy and my burden is light”. This does not mean that his standard of righteousness and holiness is lower. The burden is light not because it is easier to attain, but because they are able to bear it by his grace. The apostle John in his first letter, speaks about obeying the commands of God and he says …. “and his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world” (1 John 5:3).

The teachings of Jesus, like the law, when it is properly understood (Romans 7:10–12), are for our good; suited to us and our needs, so that we are able to bear the burdens which they lay upon us — remembering at all times of course that the believers desire to live the way God wants them to, comes as the FRUIT of salvation, and is not the cause of salvation.

How different from the yoke of the Pharisees, and the burdens they imposed which are totally unworkable and harsh, cruel in the extreme, and lead only to despair, and not to “rest” !
