Jessamine's design has always intrigued me. the stark, full black suit and tall collar are pretty obvious status symbols. black was for the longest time an incredibly expensive colour of fabric due to how difficult it was to achieve proper rich blackness during the dyeing process and the collar, while most likely just a trend in Dunwall fashion inspired by the 1890s high collars can be read as lace, especially in some concept art, which is hard to care for and needs to be starched to hell and back to keep nice and stiff for a collar like that
but what I find a lot more curious about this is that the clothes appear very much inspired by Spanish renaissance fashion
which, honestly, would make sense with the real world inspiration. 19th century was obsessed with the past, with the romanticized medieval and renaissance times, and it was quite common to see fashion inspired by times long past (I mean, just look at Worth. the man invented haute couture and there is so much influence of medieval and Elisabethan fashion in his designs). it was also a thing for rich families to just kinda... invest in recreations of historical pieces of clothing and LARP in them.
Jessamine's clothes, in particular, reminded me of Spanish court dresses. especially of the portraits of Anne of Austria and Elisabeth of Valois
obsessed with those slit sleeves. too bad Jessamine didn't go the extra mile to have the sleeves hang long and heavy around her arms but they were more form fitting
there is also something to be said about the tall white (possibly starched lace) collar and the style of clasps used on her clothes
the mini cape thing she has on top is more similar to the style of capes worn by men in renaissance, but yeah, of course she reminded me of a Spanish princess when this is one of the most given example portraits for this style
I wonder if this was an intentional choice on the designer's side or if they were just inspired by the revivalism present in 19th century fashion. what really makes me consider that though is that one of her earlier designs has those sleeves much, Much more pronounced and obvious
oh the things that could have been...
still, it makes me wonder: if this was intentional, what does this tell us about Jessamine, and the history of the Isles themselves?
#dh#dishonored#jessamine kaldwin#fashion history posting#I am not normal about this gown#me and sin even had an au where her and corvo are part of a fashion history reenactment group#still I wonder. does she just like the style? or is she just a little insane about fashion history like I am?#bias admission I spent two years working on a comic that had its entire aesthetic based around renaissance and its 19th century revival#so I might be seeing things where there are none#either way you are welcome Ive been meaning to make this post for Months at this point#we dont know if artificial black dye was already a thing at the time of DH1#another curious thing though!#since this is before silvergraphs were invented Jessamine wouldve been painted in a Particularly Nice Outfit#like if youre gonna pay someone to paint you youre gonna pose in your best garb#and its the same fit she wore to welcome corvo back which means she dressed up nice for him#which I find really fucking cute#anyways heres my insane ramblings I hope you enjoyed

~~~Jessamine Lovelace~~~
1860-1878
Lace, collarbones, pink and white, layers and layers of cloth, the bustle of city life, hiding behind a fan, to have one’s own emotions, grief, bitterness, regret, then forgiveness, curls on the nape of your neck, smooth glowing skin, carriage rides around the city, pristine shoes, kid gloves, the newest of fashion, smell of rose perfume and hopeless longing.
every part of the kaldwin lore is wild. what do you mean jessamine was crowned at 19. what do you mean she NEVER publicly married and just. had a child and everyone accepted that ok, the empress has an heir now, good for her. who's the dad? not important. who cares. feminism w for dunwall i guess ??? is this normal for you guys?? is this how they usually do it??
#the nemesis speaks#LIKE it's such a fascinating cultural difference in every way#ok dunwall quotes a lot of real world aesthetics but is very obviously doing something Very Different with its actual society#i read a fic where the author complained abt how ppl call emily ''lady emily'' even tho that's not an appropriate title for a princess#and i'm like THAT'S where you wanna start complaining about real world inaccuracies?? REALLY??#tbf sokolov suggests jessamine might be spooky witch lady so i guess she can do what she wants
So according to an email from Tumblr Staff, it might be a while before they solve my issue with in-line text posts not appearing in the tags. Until then, I have to continue copy-pasting links in my posts :’>
Ello, it’s me again with an important question~ Since Boss wears glasses, how bad is his eyesight?? Or does he only wear it for aesthetic reasons??
…….And would he allow Friend! Darling to take his glasses and try them on, or would he grip their wrist before they can remove it?? :3
(First scenario may or may not include Friend! Darling staring at his face and saying he looks more handsome with glasses)
how bad is his eyesight?? Or does he only wear it for aesthetic reason??
For the sake of possibly getting 🍀 going through a crisis, he wears it for the sake of being able to see. He struggles a lot because (correct me if I'm wrong cause its been a WHILE) he's actually far-sighted! However, when he doesn't have his glasses, he just wears contacts instead.
…….And would he allow Friend! Darling to take his glasses and try them on, or would he grip their wrist before they can remove it?? :3
Jessamine. Jessamine. Friend! Darling would have somewhat of those rights but heaven forbid you pull that away for an hour, he will hold you on a death grip. This man wouldn't mind if they do it though, because he doesnt really need it and has his contacts, but... Well.
Let's just say he likes them better.
(First scenario may or may not include Friend! Darling staring at his face and saying he looks more handsome with glasses)
THE FIRST SCENARIO LMAOOO PLEASE TELL HIM, PLEASE FEED INTO HIS EGO. I will laugh because he'd be probably "oh, so you're into glasses, are you? :)" while internally going "hm... interesting..."
#💌 ;; messenger writes#💌 ;; a letter from: jessamine-rose#💌 ;; fine print: ''boss''#;; love how boss is just 'oh. you like those?'#;; if this were to be a sfw fic you'd catch him getting thick rimmed ones just for friend darling#;; alas. this aint a sfw blog#;; but in a way they KINDA got some form of favoritism/nicer treatment than others... chuckles.#;; also i promise i'll reply to the messages i am. not having it with my college classes.#;; anyways expect me to come in to feed ur demons (/exag) more thoughts of friend darling and boss. please. i need to hold ur shoulders#;; and shake you with them.#;; fucking blorbos. i love them.#;; would steal friend darling from boss to piss him off though 10/10
TID characters as Taylor Swift Albums
( i have wanted to do this for so long now)
Sophie Collins as Debut "Its alright to love someone who doesn't love you back, as long as they're worth you loving them. As long as they deserve it."
I mean she totally has those faded blue jeans paired with a tank top aesthetic when you think about it. She fell head first for a boy who showed her what hope was and then grew out of it to fall for a man who lit her world. She is brave and beautiful just like country Taylor.
Tessa Gray as Fearless (Taylor's version) "If no one in the entire world cared about you, did you really exist at all?"
Because she is the epitome of hope, her transition into a new country all by herself is so inspiring, and i’ve always associated Fearless with change, the inevitable beautiful kind, that transforms you into a new person, the sort of change that grows on you.
Jessamine Lovelace as Speak Now "Life is full of risks. Death is much simpler."
Sometimes we don’t say things when we feel them before it’s too late, but like Taylor rightly said “I don’t think you should wait, I think you should speak now.” Jessamine didn’t have much time but she realized things before it was too late. She saved them by sacrificing herself. She became her own salvation.
Will Herondale as Red (Taylor's Version) "Life is a book and there are a thousand pages that I have not yet read."
Yes i promise this is definitely not because Red is my favorite album (mostly). I have always associated Red with love and said that in a way Will taught me how to love. The selfless love that comes with knowing someone, falling head first for someone unknowingly, the sort of love that comes with the risk of them not catching you as you fall. It's ugly but it's radiant. It is the most beautiful shade of red because when you look into their eyes, you know it's worth it.
Cecily Herondale as 1989 "I am not afraid of London.", Cecily said defiantly.
Are you kidding me? She is literally the new romantic. She believed in second chances, she looked for the best in people. She was sweet and the sort of person everyone would want to protect but she also knew how to stand up for herself when come to it.
Charlotte Fairchild as Reputation “What I mean,” Charlotte said, correcting herself, “is that you are a Shadowhunter first, and a lady second.”
Make way for the first female Consul. *drumroll* She is smart, she is clever, she is wise, she is badass, she is the moment. She kind of ran the institute alone for years and took care of three kids with serious issues. She is the definition of being brave.
Gabriel Lightwood as Lover “You may hide here with me, if you wish.”
Please, we can all agree on the fact that Gabriel was the misunderstood lover boy. He is easily overlooked but that does not mean he doesn't have a sparkling personality. He is a pushover but when he knows something needs to be done, he does it.
James Carstairs as Folklore "You endure what is unbearable and you bear it. That is all."
Jem Carstairs is the epitome of wisdom and I consider Folklore the most lyrically established album so I think they go well together. He is like the start of August - when the breeze in the air feels like hope. He knew how to draw stars around someone's scars and heal them. He knew how to be there for the people he loved.
All CC's "Characters" are just shells of characters and fandom likes to fill in with their own imaginations. That's why there are soo many fanfiction characters that are more amazing than the Og characters.
Jace is just a shell of a character: he has no personality at all! he's just the bad boy trope from the early 2000s and a love interest. Will is the same trope applied in Victorian aesthetics and a love interest, Emma is the typical vengeful heroine with a Sword and a love interest. Kit is a traumatized young boy in love (yes, we haven't seen this before in the same series) and James (under the influence of Gracelet) is a perfect example of how bland every other TSC character would be if they are not in a "forbidden romance" trope. Jem is a good boy and explains a great deal about his relationship with Will to Tessa, Alec is gay with a bow. Isabell is Jace&Alec's hot sister, and Clary is your typical self-centred heroine and love interest. Lucie is an amateur writer with a love interest-Jesse is the Love interest ..etc.
Are there any morally grey characters among the characters that actually matter to the story? Morally grey characters are not inherently good people who did mistakes under some sort of influence. I can't go into detail about Grace because of Chot Spoilers. CC sucks at writing morally grey characters. None of her morally grey characters is intentional, the characters that were supposed to be hated but were loved by the fandom so she let them get a redemption arc.
No character in TSC has a personality to them. No characters (especially the mains) in TSC are solid characters. They are just love interests with tropes added to them.
All the TSC characters can pretty much be summed up with couple traits. In many occasions, fans have had a greater capacity to deepen and broaden the characters that returning to the original works feels terribly lacking.
The one morally gray character that comes up to mind is Robert, but he is one of those unintentional ones that gets a form of redemption arc. Stephen also edged that misguided but good the more we learn from him, though Tessa dismisses him completely. Kieran and, now I suspect, Grace both end up being good but were forced out of their circumstances to commit questionable or antagonistic things. The greater villains like the Unseelie King and Tatiana eventually end up taking the fall for the actions of their influencees because they were the main bad guys behind it all. Or that Kieran's or Grace's intentions were ultimately good but they appeared bad at first. Similarly Gabriel and Alastair are not fundamentally morally grey characters though their actions aren't always necessarily good either.
I guess Clare tried making a morally grey character when she wrote Julian, but Julian is just an asshole who goes above and beyond to protect his family and Emma. There's nothing morally grey about his ways, his actions are just portrayed as "ruthless" but. in the end, Julian still stands on the same moral ground as the rest of the good guys. Maybe Jessamine? She did what she wanted and wished out of her life, despite the Shadowhunter brainwashing, and sided with antagonists and villains to achieve that.
I think the reason readers find so much to discuss about Clare's characters and stories is because all the ingredients and sometimes subtext is there, but as Clare loves to wave at those as they pass by, the readers and fans are able to see the full potential and emotional depth Clare is incapable of executing. My favorite pieces of fan writing (unsurprising because of my main complaint always) are those that have the honest conversations and interactions and acknowledgements the series fails to externalize because it some way would not serve the characters like Jace who Clare wants to coddle.
Jace has always been nothing short of a power fantasy, a character that is so oohed and aahed at by other characters because anything happening in the series need other characters as the audience to validate whatever the tragic main hero is going through. Jace and Clary's position in the Clave is majorly overstated and poorly justified in Queen of Air and Darkness, that the reveal of them being alive and the rest of the Nephilim being gobsmacked by this doesn't really hit the notes Clare intended.
Alec clapping back at Lazlo in the election meeting was on point, but Alec's words cannot stand on their own without a random person commenting, "wow, he's good." As if Clare does not trust the effect to be delivered by her own writing, she needs to resort to writing someone giving a commentary on any given occasion or major reactions from other characters for emphasis. Similarly Alec invoking Michael's name to Sammael was pretty cool on its own, but no, Magnus needs to give his two cents on how cool it was. And it was way cooler than Jace doing it to Lilith in CoFA.
I went on a tangent again, but I agree with you. Jesse probably has even less personality than James. And that's not a lot to begin with. Clare's approach to her characters is very external, having a lump you attach things you think are cool to instead of creating a solid character that extends from the inside out.
Benjamin Volkov aesthetic from my original "Twilight" fanfiction "Midnight"
Benjamin was a Russian mafia boss' son who was also Anthony's first "boyfriend". Benjamin was abusive and was especially good at gaslighting his victims. He gives each of his victims a leather bracelet to always keep with them. Benjamin chose Anthony as his next target in 2005 when Anthony was seventeen and Benjamin was twenty. Anthony was able to escape from him a year later. In 2008, after Jessamine turned Anthony into a vampire, they had both hunted Benjamin down and killed him. After he was sure that Benjamin was dead, Anthony burned his leather bracelet.
also, no one's going to be as powerful as a marked, but there's plenty of ways to be magical in dishonored without directly being marked. billie is not, she's just directly using outsider charmed objects which makes her as powerful as a marked. but bonecharms themselves are magical, they grant users extraordinary abilities. maybe it's just my obsession, but delilah finding witch powers and learning to tap into the void isn't farfetched. she's a cunning manipulator. if she was truly touched by the outsider, she wouldn't have seduced one of the richest men alive for his riches.
delilah kaldwin has always just been obsessed with emily and jessamine. maybe the jessamine story is true, i somehow doubt it is ( either way, they were kids and the woe is me story is wild when jessamine had almost no control over any of that ). her plan was to BECOME emily, to replace her soul with emily's. delilah is as pure of a villain as they come and i guess it goes with the whole dishonored aesthetic -- you're going to be charmed by delilah and she's going to control you somehow because that's her villainry.
