Drawing and Anxiety
Livestream replay
youtube
We get into a very interesting conversation during this livestream. I revisit some of my figure drawings from a class I took last week and analyze where things went wrong.
Meanwhile, we talk about how drawing can be a tool to help reduce/cope with anxiety, or in some cases can be a source of it. Everyone's relationship to the creative process is individual and we need to be self-aware in order to steer the relationship into the healthiest form possible.
00:00:00 - intro
00:01:00 - Am I too Old
00:16:00 - Which Pencil Lead and I using
00:20:00 - Solid structure
00:26:00 - You are not your art
00:42:00 - Drawing to relieve anxiety
01:04:00 - Use the wrong lines to find the right ones
Thank you to viewer Seretse Smith for the elegant expression of "Use the wrong lines to find the right ones"
And thanks to Amazing cartoonist and cartooning educator Jerzy Drozd for dropping in the chat and asking some very thoughtful questions about my relationship with anxiety - https://www.instagram.com/jerzydrozd/

TPD Special: The Emotions of Objects, with Marisa Szpytman by Jerzy Drozd The Inscrutable Doctor Baer and the Case of the Two-Faced Statue (https://doctorbaer.com) is finally available for purchase! To celebrate I’m joined by my friend, beta reader, and advisor Marisa Szpytman. It was through conversations with friends like Marisa that I discovered my book was becoming a meditation on topics surrounding object and cultural repatriation. In the earliest days of the book’s creation, she was generous in helping me understand the ethical quandaries around collecting cultural objects, and now that the book is in the world she joined me again to have that conversation anew. • Learn more about The Inscrutable Doctor Baer and the Case of the Two-Faced Statue (https://doctorbaer.com) • Suggest a topic for TPD here (https://jdrozd.com/ama) • TPD theme music by Eliott Drozd • Intro VO by Tara Platt (https://ift.tt/b4imC1L) Subscribe to the podcast (https://ift.tt/NV3HT6X) viaYouTube

The State Of Art Soundoff 2023?
BW Media Spotlight brings unhappy tidings to The State Of Art Soundoff 2023?
A few years ago Jerzy Drozd and Rob Stenzinger started the Art Soundoff Challenge. Creators would take maybe 15 minutes to record an audio or video blog, a “micropodcast” I think is the term, and share it with everyone using the #ArtSoundoff hashtag on Twitter. It was a good way to share comic creating perspectives, go over what creators are thinking about, and just interact without actually…

Tonight Tonight
Tonight was a bit of a grind. Every once in a while you have to work on a page that isn't totally super cool, but it necessary for story.I kept thinking of a pod cast from Jerzy Drozd where he talked about a project he has been working on lately. Drawing things that were a challenge and new, almost daunting. While not exactly the same (although mine has been more daunting than I anticipated) the sentiment is the same. "Draw the thing." It won't get done if you don't do it. Just push through, draw the thing, learn from it and when you are done, you get to move to the next thing. So, my "Draw the thing." moment was drawing notes on a desk based on very old alchemy references. My friend Geoff got me an excellent book on alchemy about a bajillion years ago, which has been a big part of a particular character's history. This page is a shot of the disheveled desk of this character. It is, basically, a redraw (with some minor changes) of ancient alchemy prints. Here it is:

Archives: TPD 314 – The Best Way to Help Me by Jerzy Drozd While making The Inscrutable Doctor Baer and the Case of the Two-Faced Statue (https://doctorbaer.com) I recorded a bunch of reflections on why and how I was making the book. These microcasts were shared exclusively with people who supported me on Patreon (https://ift.tt/9NjJRWO) (I’m sharing the entire process of making the next Doctor Baer story there right now!). To count down to the book’s release, I’m putting some of those reflections into the Thunder Punch Daily feed. Please note: the book was titled Baron von Bear and the Case of the Two-Faced Statue at the time of this recording. But baronvonbear.com does take you to the book’s landing page. Here’s the original post: Another thoughtful question from the Doctor Baer ask me anything form (https://jdrozd.com/ama) led me to think about my weaknesses as a Teaching Artist/Cartoonist. And finally ask for what I need from you to support The Inscrutable Doctor Baer and the Case of the Two-Faced Statue (https://ift.tt/DEV0hUO) : This is a two-parter: 1) making comics for public/wider consumption today involves a lot of things that maybe aren’t necessarily the things that one excitedly looks forward to (or is even thinking about) as they are headlong and heart-deep in the thick of making their comic — things like marketing, and promoting, and keeping somewhat of a social media presence. How do you balance the joyful, flow-state, lost-and-in-love-with-the-making-of-the-comic side of things with the more business orientated part of the process? Is it something that you don’t even think about until after the book is made? When does that side of things start popping up on your radar? And how do you feel about it? and 2) What is the best way to support you when BvB releases? Pre-order at my local comic shop? Order on Amazon? Put an order request in at the local library? What actionable steps will help the most? • Learn more about The Inscrutable Doctor Baer and the Case of the Two-Faced Statue (https://doctorbaer.com) • Suggest a topic for TPD here (https://jdrozd.com/ama) • TPD theme music by Eliott Drozd • Intro VO by Tara Platt (https://ift.tt/b4imC1L) Subscribe to the podcast (https://ift.tt/NV3HT6X) viaYouTube

Saturday Night Showcase: Riffing Out A Story (and I helped)
BW's Saturday Night Showcase is a Lean Into Artcast I helped out with. Also: art
Here’s something I forgot to post back in August of 2016 because I wanted to make something attached to it, and didn’t get the chance. Because 2016 hated me. Still, tonight’s posting is a podcast, and while I wasn’t a guest, I still took part in it and even helped…from the chat.
Lean Into Artcast is a podcast that does what the old Art & StoryI used to talk about (the archives aren’t even up…
