The Jerba of Wyrmspine
Jerba are a race of people who are similar in appearance to large, bipedal jerboa. However, unlike Jerboa, Jerba have fur in a large array of unnatural colors, notable examples being green, pink, purple, and blue. Jerba culture values friendliness, and has strict, unspoken rules of hospitality dictating how guests in a jerba home are to be treated, and how they are to treat their hosts in turn. Jerba also have a heavy focus on art and documentation, with customary crafts marking milestones in a jerba’s life. It is typical that fur from the tail of a newborn Jerba will be taken, and woven into a bracelet along with fur from the tails of their parents. Upon losing their first tooth, it will be crafted into a necklace charm, and similar pieces will be crafted for them upon significant birthdays, and other life events. This dedication to art will even extend to their deaths, with Jerba elders often dedicating the last years of their lives to planning their own funerals, and creating the vessels in which they will be laid to rest. Because of this, no two Jerba urns or coffins are the same, each having their own unique designs and imperfections. Upon their deaths, Jerba are buried in sheer shawls, along with the jewelry and other such items crafted to document their life. Jerba funerals are most commonly celebratory events, the story of their life coming to a close being seen as a grand achievement, worthy of the same recognition granted to other important events in their life. It is a time for the family to raise their loved one up to the community, and celebrate the entirety of their life and achievements. Despite the revelry of the funeral itself, the Jerba are incredibly strict in the treatment of their dead once the festivities have come to a close, and the body is in the ground. Disrespecting a Jerba burial ground is viewed as being the same as vandalizing or damaging the home of living Jerba, but is even more severely looked down upon, as the deceased cannot force the perpetrator to leave their home. Graverobbing is viewed with the same severity as murder, as when items are buried with a Jerba, it is because the Jerba believe those objects contained a part of the deceased’s soul, memories, and identity. Removing items from the grave is akin to damaging or destroying the deceased’s soul, killing them again by denying them peace in the afterlife.

The majority (98% ) of modern Tunisians are Arabized Amazigh or Arab-Amazigh, and are speakers of Tunisian Arabic. However, there is also a small (1 percent at most) of pure native Amazigh located mainly in the Jabal Dahar mountains in the South East and on the island of Jerba. The Amazigh primarily speak Amazigh languages, often called Shilha or Tashlihit, or have shifted to Tunisian Arabic.

This isn't new, this isn't just Lybia.
I can't say anything about my grandma's birth village in Yemen, bc her family was "what was - was" type of. (Fun fact - I recently found it wasn't what I thought, but actually ANOTHER village, closer to Damar. I was confused due to last names shenanigans.)
But I can tell that those who left there homes towards the refugees camps, had to hide their identity and play Muslim. That's how dangerous it was to be recognised as a Jew.
I will NEVER stop talking about the Orphans' Decree, which meant the government got custody over every Jewish orphan (sometimes those who still had one parent.) The amount of time, mobey, and wit dedicated to keep those kids safe from being taken.
Ever heard about residential schools? In USA and Canada?
This.
But for fucking CENTURIES.
~
Also a quick reminder that in Tunisia, an ancient synagogue was burnt to the ground earlier this year.
~
Poland is the same, btw:
My father's family is from a city called Lodz. We were bakers there. The building we owned is still there at Targowa 67. You can see it on Google Maps. The city now owns it. Back in the 1990s, we made inquiries about reclaiming it... And the city told us that if we tried, "We would not be able to guarantee your safety when you are physically present." Whether that's a warning or a subtle threat is up for debate, but hey, we got the message either way that Jews Are Not Welcome In Poland.
yeah cool you’re an american jew that doesn’t think antisemitism is a thing anymore. anyway did you know that david gerbi has been trying restore synagogues and cemeteries in libya to try to facilitate the return of libyan jews but non jewish libyans keep trying to lynch him every time he comes to libya.
