Platonic Yandere Mr. Cheng
Mr. Cheng is desperate for any semblance of his Daughter to be alive. While realistically he understands you are not her, you are not Xiao Lan, the Mogui whispers in his ear about your mannerisms, your hobbies. It feeds into Cheng Lan's growing obsession about you. You may not look like her but you feel like her. Your Qi can not be a coincidence. So out of curiosity he begins to look into you and your life.
Even all these centuries later Mr. Cheng remembers the deal he made with the Mogui. How Bai Suzhen told him the cost of bringing back his Daughter would be his Soul. Back then he was hesitant, now he simply lives with his choice having come too far to ever turn back. Daoists do not always believe in Reincarnation but Mr. Cheng can not deny how he feels around you. You remind him so much of his bǎobèi, it's not possible for you to be anyone else.
The deal was painful. Mr. Cheng remembers when he and the Mogui combined, his Soul being stolen by the Demon and his body fusing with this creature. He is aware of his looks, how he no longer appears as the sweet old man he once was and how that might scare you but he reassures himself it is necessary. It's for your protection. If he is powerful he can keep you safe. Besides once you know it's your BaBa you will eventually settle down and listen to him regardless of how he looks.
Mr. Cheng stalks you relentlessly, obsessive about your safety due to what happened to his Xiao Lan in her last life. He decides to follow and learn more about you himself instead of letting the demons employed under him watch you because he is afraid they will mess up or hurt you. He trusts only himself to take care of you. Only himself to properly protect you.
He observes your mannerisms. The way you talk, the way you move, what you're interested in. The more he learns the more he deludes himself into thinking your Xiao Lan, you're his lost daughter. It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl or neither. It doesn't matter if you're African, Asian, Caucasian, European, or Latin America. He doesn't care. He believes you are Xiao Lan.
He kept Xiao Lan's hair pin, never parting with what he considers his greatest treasure after all these centuries. It is carefully kept over where his heart once was on his robe. But one day wanting to see it in your hair he decides to leave it on your desk to see what you would do, if you would remember it. As Mr. Cheng observed you inspect the hair pin, he is overjoyed when you eventually put it in your hair. You don't seem to have an attachment to the hair pin like he hoped but when you wear it, it seems to affirm whatever thoughts he has about you being his. He takes it as a sign you remember and that you're ready to return home with him.
Your Qi is powerful but contained. You don't seem to have a third eye or a seers spiritual sight but you can sense things others cannot. Sometimes you pause and look behind you, possibly searching for him. You seem to have a basic understanding of Qi even if you aren't consciously using it. He knows you feel the connection as well, he can sense it. It's why you look for him when he's watching you.
When he takes you it's in the middle of the night when you are sleeping. Less struggle that way. Less possibility of you getting hurt or your false parents attempting to rescue you.
Xiao Lan was always a fan of flowers. She loved the Spring time when everything was in bloom. She'd spend hours playing outside in the warm sun while picking and playing with them. When you wake up, you're in another dimension. A plane of existence Mr. Cheng has complete control over. There's a traditional Chinese home that mirrors his old one and a Garden outside that stretches for Eternity. It's like a miniature version of the Great Beyond, but he controls everything. Make no mistake, this place may look safe but Mr. Cheng Lan can change that at any time. If his delusion were to break this Haven would become your Hell.
The house is stocked with toys Xioa Lan, his precious bǎobèi loved when she was alive. Art supplies, Books, Calligraphy sets, Chinese yo-yos, Scrolls, Toys, and all sorts of fun and unique things he couldn't afford when they were both alive. The closest is full of traditional Qipoas and other Chinese clothing. The bathroom has combs of all shapes and sizes along with new fancy hairpins. He spared no expense for his bǎobèi, he's been waiting for this day for a long time.
You're panicked when you wake up. Obviously terrified for your soul and life, fearing the demon that took you had bad intentions. Mr. Cheng tries to soothe you but you're too scared to listen and lash out so he gives you space despite how much it hurts. He only intervenes when you escape the house and attempt to run away in the garden.
You lament about your old life. Your old friends, your old family, any old hobbies or things you enjoyed that he won't bring here (video games, movies, anything involving technology). For the first year Mr. Cheng allows this to give you time to grieve but after the year is up he changes the subject or leaves you alone. Whenever you tell him to leave he does, only returning when you call on him. The isolation eventually begins to wear on you and despite hating him you need companionship. Your mind will break without it and so you give in. You get used to his presence and slowly you begin to bond some thing Mr. Cheng has waited life times to do again.
His claws are Dangerous but with you they are oh so gentle. He may be firm with you but he is never rough. He is your father after all, it is his job to discipline you but he would never even imagine hurting you. Even if you Attack and Attempt to hurt him he will never hurt you back. He is more powerful than you know or could ever understand, your punches, kicks, and hits do not physically harm him. Though your crying greatly upsets him and he often uses his magic to force you to sleep so he can hold you close after you have a fit.
Mr. Chengs skin in his demon form is like the texture of tar. The Mogui, keeps Cheng's original body trapped inside itself to preserve his life force and soul. But despite his looks, his skin doesn't hurt you like hot tar would. His skin feels strange against your skin, sticky almost. But it rarely ever actually sticks. Occasionally parts of the goop will get stuck on your clothes something the creature always gets embarrassed about. But otherwise the tar type texture is solid. Over time you begin to notice it heavily depends on his emotions and the amount of magic he's used. The tar becomes more hot and less solid when he's angry and more cool and solid when he's content. He avoids you on days his skin or magic could harm you, shielding you from that side of himself.
The longer you're together the more Mr Cheng comes to understand you don't seem to have any memories of your past life. While uncommon with Reincarnation Mr. Cheng accepts that you do not remember, believing his daughter was too pure to remember her death and was simply given a fresh slate when she was reincarnated into you. He will tell you stories of your past life to remind you of your bond but will not be frustrated with your lack of memory. He will just make new memories with you. Despite his willingness to make new memories he does sometimes get nostalgic. He will talk about old times as if you remember them and will get secretly frustrated when you don't know what he's talking about. He remains calm on the outside but on the inside he is frustrated. Despite finding you again, sometimes it's like speaking to a stranger.
It's a pampered but isolated life. Mr. Cheng will give into your every whim and desire except letting you free or giving you access to the modern amenities of the world. You will live how you lived before and nothing will change. To him it's almost like Xiao Lan never died, after all she's right in front of him. Over time you'll notice you haven't aged and while Mr. Cheng hasn't said anything about that, you know it's his doing. He will continue to keep you young and healthy and safe away from the worries of the world. Eventually a time passes you will forget your old life and only remember him. Personally he can't wait.

Something I noticed in Jentry Chau vs the Underworld... a quick ramble about her hair.
Spoilers under the cut
Throughout the first half of the season, Jentry's hair is dyed that silver color, when she is hiding her powers from the world, and distancing them from herself. Come the end of the Mr Cheng arc, we start seeing her roots come out when she is seeking out her mother. At this point, she is getting back in touch with her true self, a girl with a mission.
In the final episode, it ends with her hair back to its natural, black color. No dyes, no streaks, and no hiding herself from herself, or anyone else. Was the color of her hair indicative of how honest she was being with herself? Or was it just coincidence? My answer: possibly both.

It’s a real shame just how underrated Jentry Chau Vs. The Underworld really is.
I mean it’s on par with the likes of Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Amphibia, The Owl House and Steven Universe (before the undercooked ending)
Though it did feel the episodes after the 9th felt rushed. Reading that one review made me realize they could have used the material and stretched it out to season 2.
Like the fact that Jentry having supernatural powers isn’t a secret anymore. Everyone in town knows about everything. Well not everything seeing is how Kit had his human picture memorized at his locker at school so apparently it’s still a secret that he was a Painted Skin and the fact that everything went down was because of his deal with Mr. Cheng. It’s amazing that the vice principal wasn’t fired after outing Jentry and making her cry like that. He should have at least had something chucked at his head and booed at for what he did. Though I’m guessing it’s because he’s connected to someone rich and connected. I mean how else could he afford all that survival necessities and in his office as well. He said he was wrong to accuse Jentry. Was he wrong to out her or did he think Mr. Cheng’s daughter was the demon girl? I mean Jentry did admit to burning the town down by accident. Who knows what the town knows after the demon incident.
Michael’s powers were really glossed over. I want to know more about them. It seems like a lot went on during the time when Jentry was searching for her mom. I mean Michael mentioned taking boxing lessons. Was it his idea or his parents? Did he want to take lessons so he could fight or did his parents insist he should be able to defend himself better?
Speaking of Jentry’s mom I feel like her story was too rushed. I mean she lost all of her memories and didn’t even know her own name for years and suddenly she just turns up in this other town and there weren’t any issues with how she had this house when she didn’t even know her own name? It made me wish that Moonie Chau got to be part of Jentry’s life growing up. She would have been a disabled mother where Flora would still lie to her about the circumstances like blaming her lost memories on the suppose “accident” that claimed her husband’s life but she still would have been a mother to Jentry the whole time. Also they should have delved more into her and her husband’s dealings with the magic black market and how they constantly stole from GuGu in addition to it.
I mean a bounty hunter went after them on more than one occasion and is apparently pretty old if she kept relying on this potion to keep herself young. They should delved deeper into her backstory she seems pretty interesting.
Also with the revelation that the demons of Diyu have Jentry’s father’s soul hostage will that provide the basis for season 2?

I finished watching Jentry Chau VS The Underworld and here’s my thoughts on the show.
It’s a good show and as a Chinese American, that was born and raised in Texas, I was so excited to watch this when I found out about it! The cultural references made me so happy and the setting being in Texas was a bonus. It was a good show for cultural representation and some action but story wise, towards the last episodes it was not that great.
I get Netflix is probably the one to blame though but some parts of the story made me question some stuff.
[SPOILER REVIEW]
I wished they leaned away from the romance or maybe took out the fact that Stella was Michael’s girlfriend. Like make Stella just a regular bestfriend character instead of being one of the love interest’s girlfriend. Or maybe in the beginning make Jentry “assume” Michael and Stella are a couple (which can still tick her powers off) but later find out they’re just really good friends.
The romance part of the show felt so forced??? Especially towards the end?? And Stella just brushes off a “relationship since freshman year” just because she thinks Jentry and Michael look better together? It’s whatever to see the main character have two love interest but having one of the love interest already HAVE a partner is frustrating and weird. More drama sure but for what? Just to be brushed off? Like what’s up with that. In my opinion the show would have been fine WITHOUT the romance.
Jentry learning her powers too fast was also kinda annoying/no progression was disappointing. Not even small ones. Like we see her struggle and have outbursts but an episode later she suddenly knows how to do certain things with her powers. (This was probably a Netflix issue with timing.)
Towards the end of the show with Jentry defeating Mr. Cheng and went to look for her mom, it felt kinda rushed and the story felt like it wasn’t going anywhere besides the fact that the Mogui was the main villian again. I wished they gave some conflict with the mom’s memories instead of her accepting the memories so quick. (might be Netflix timing issue again.)
Kit’s death meant nothing since the Mogui ends up coming back either way and wreck havoc once again.
Michael??? His character was overall kind of a nuisance. I get they’re in highschool but come on man. AGAIN, the romance was POINTLESS. Where in the series did they imply that Michael and Jentry were “dating”?? I had to go back to see if I had missed a episode or two to figure out why Michael said they broke up? Was it after the homecoming game? Was it after Jentry said she didn’t want him to get hurt? WHERE?? Also Michael kissing Jentry when he “moved on” and was dating another girl? Once more, I get they’re in highschool and feelings can be complicated but really was there even a point to Michael getting with a new girl? It was hard to watch. I get this show isn’t about romance but let’s be real, what was the point of adding it if you weren’t gonna make it at least tolerable.
Michael’s powers?? What was the point of his powers if they weren’t going to talk about it?? And his powers were practically useless the entire series besides just “foreshadowing” whatever is going to happen and EVEN THEN they never take action to stop Michael’s visions from happening. I get he was trying to tell Jentry about his powers throughout the series but at the same time he never really did?? Or never really went in depth with it. Either way, they basically did nothing to explain it or have his parents explain it. Probably a timing issue AGAIN but it’s whatever.
They never bring back the dad again after using him as bait for Moonie to sign another deal with the Mogui.
Iris/Jentry’s Grandma. They basically used her to give Moonie her memories back and sure Gugu has some scenes with her/backstory but they give little to no info/answers about her afterwards. She was just there for the memories and the scarf and then she’s gone.
If the show was gonna try for a Season 2 then maybe it was best to hold off some information but honestly with the way it ended I don’t see a Season 2 coming at all. And I’m completely fine with that.
I liked this show and I loved how each episode had a kick to it, besides the romance part cause to me it was unnecessary. But after the episode “Good Intentions” it was hard to keep watching the rest of the show until I found out it had literally 2 more episode left.
Story wise the first few episodes was a best 8 (minus the romance drama) but after they defeat Mr. Cheng, it dropped to a 6.5 for me. This is just my opinion though so if you disagree that’s totally fine! Feel free to comment about your opinions as well!

A Shell's Shelter - A Jentry Chau vs The Underworld Fanfiction
Summary: “Uhhh, hey.” He cleared his throat, “I kinda got kicked out.” The last words came out like vomit, a human function he was happy not to have.
Jentry gasped, quickly leading him inside.
Or
Kit is kicked out of his house after confronting Mr. Cheng, and has to find shelter at Jentry’s home. This, along with having to decide whether or not he will reveal himself as painted skin to Jentry while she’s trying to comfort him, stresses Kit out.
