[jentry cheng au] i realized i forgot to mention that living in diyu means jentry's powers are somewhat suppressed (she's not aware of this) so in order to do the same things she is able to do in canon, she always has to use up a lot of strength and energy, pushing herself twice as hard -- it takes her a very long time to master her powers

jentry's relationship with cheng is very messy and complex. the foundation of it was never a stable one to begin with but he wasn't always snappy, judgemental or hard on her. during her childhood he was there for her physically but emotionally distant. affectionate one moment until something snapped in his mind and withdrew. still, she loved him. he was her everything

cheng definitely views her as a sort of replacement for xiao lan -- partially in the sense of her just fulfilling that hole in his heart but also in a more literal way. especially as a baby jentry looked just so much like *her*. he's always kept her hair in a similar style

while there are parts of his love for her that are genuine and fatherly it’s overshadowed by the fact that he doesn’t really love jentry as *jentry*. and as she ages (beyond the age xiao lan ever did) he only seems to grow more cold and resentful that the chaus' daughter is able to grow up but his couldn't. every milestone jentry passes is a stark reminder of what he’s trying to bring back. her training starts around this time

he takes jentry's place in her seoul friend group :) trying to live a human life like he's done many times before but not miserable

since they were cool with jentry's fire powers, i figured they'd also accept kit's true demon nature and be his support system (what he needed all along, really)

and when you think about it he actually fits in sooo well it's insane. he's an art kid just like jentry! he'd absolutely love art school, and the location being korea is the perfect excuse to keep his appearance the same as in the show lmaooo

we're thinking he could also be an ex lackey of cheng but ah, still workshopping that

yess that's exactly what happens. was thinking that in this au you can't separate the powers from her and after cheng takes her he realizes he cant force himself to kill her so he decides to raise her for the purpose of reviving his actual daughter. along the way he develops a genuine soft spot for her but it's all very fucked

treading into heavily making shit up territory here so bear with me: remember when ed called mr cheng a mogui king? assuming he has a reputation and influence, why wouldn't he have his own little palace somewhere in the bowels of diyu? that's where he's raising and training her in this au, forbidding her from leaving. ed is there to play a babysitter/big brother role and gugu spends those 16 years desperately trying to save her

in terms of personality she would be wayy more angsty and insecure than canon jentry for sure. she pushes herself a lot to win cheng's approval but more often than not that results in her hurting herself and disappointing him. needless to say his quick tempered and emotionally unavailable ass sucks at teaching lmao. her mandarin would be better tho

does jentry being in diyu imply that she's having weird guilt hallucinations all the time?

not all the time! but she does get them. mostly when she and cheng are fighting/he's mad at her

his palace in diyu is on top of one of these mountain ranges:

most likely the ones in the back so it's more secluded. jentry's never left the palace grounds and it's hard to see what's at the bottom but at least it's a pretty view. cheng's put warding spells around the perimeter to shield her from attacking demons and hallucinations but diyu's fuckery overwrites that sometimes and still affects her, especially when she's in a fragile state of mind

i feel like over time she'd learn to distinguish between what's real and what's diyu trying to torture her pretty fast and snap out but it's still horrible

haven't really gotten to the texas part yet, my brain works slowly trying to figure out where all the characters fit in since everything is just completely different. my main issue here is that i don't think it'd make sense for jentry to go to school at any point during the main plot? deciding this is proving surprisingly hard lol

i keep thinking about with the way she acts & talks people would probably assume she grew up in a cult jgfdkjlfdk

but michael Is gonna show up at some point but i feel like it needs to be tied to his powers since he and jentry were never childhood friends
