Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) and Yu Jiaolong, aka Jen (Zhang Zhiyi), battle in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).
I saw this film opening weekend at a large theatre in Los Angeles that was packed (Keanu Reeves snuck into the audience that night). The crowd, which was more the typical art house/film festival audience than kung fu/wuxia fans, went absolutely nuts after this scene.

10« N'essaie pas de me réparer. Je ne suis pas brisé. » Agatha x reader pls

I watched “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” yesterday for the first time in a long time and, watching as an adult and truly paying attention to what’s being said, really following the plot and not just the fight scenes, I realized that this entire movie is low-key messy and the core of all of the main characters’ conflicts is lack of communication and being dishonest with themselves. The male and female leads Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien (played by Michelle Yeoh) have been pining for each other for about 20 years, but because she was initially engaged to his brother who died in battle right before the beginning of said 20 years, they just stayed friends even though they both wanted more. Tradition was like “no.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, Li Mu Bai’s deceased brother’s killer Jade Fox, a notorious female thief and assassin who specializes in poison, took on an apprentice through becoming a governess in a noble household. This apprentice is none other than Jen, the daughter of the nobles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Jen is actually quite the martial arts prodigy and had surpassed Jade in skill for quite some time. Out of anger and jealousy, Jade resigns as Jen’s governess and leaves the estate. Naturally talented and easily bored, Jen seeks council and friendship from Shu Lien while concealing her other identity as Jade Fox’s (former) apprentice and quietly rebelling against the arranged marriage her parents set up for her. Enter Lo, aka Dark Cloud, the handsome thief who had robbed Jen and her mother’s caravan some time earlier.😏😝💕
Tumblr media
She returns home of her own free will thinking that she could just fall back into her every day life like she and Lo never happened and go through with the arranged marriage. But that doesn’t happen either. She runs from her groom and Lo and goes to the Wudan Temple on her own to fine tune her skills…and her self by figuring out what she wants to do with her life. Li Mu Bai offers to take her on as a disciple to continue her training at Wudan after they fight (again) and he spared her (again), but she wanted to find her own way…only to get snatched up by Jade Fox, who, during her time away, had made up her mind to kill her old charge! But Li Mu Bai decided to save Jen yet again and ended up getting himself killed. Shu Lien stayed by his side while Jen went back to Wudan for the antidote. She didn’t make it back in time. But Li Mu Bai did manage to tell Shu Lien that he had always loved her.😒
Tumblr media
That blew me soooo bad!!!! Like, y’all had 20 years! Everyone knew about them digging on each other and was just waiting for one of them to buck up and make the first move!😭 I wouldn’t be surprised if there had been bets placed! But she was bound to her deceased fiancé. So because he died, Shu Lien’s love life had to die too? They hadn’t even wed yet! Next, you had Jen out here being a brat starting fights with people, some of whom actually wanted the best for her and could’ve helped her ease her way out and/or around tradition, but out of pride and arrogance, chose to stab these people in the back and even got one killed.😒😒 Like, she and Lo could’ve been warrior boos training at Wudan Temple together. I’d like to say that if she stood her ground against her parents, she would’ve been fine and they would’ve accepted her life choices; but given the time period, and how traditional her parents were (and society was as a whole), I don’t think so. Then, you had Jade on the side being a hater because Jen was a natural at martial arts while she struggled to teach herself for years. So instead of being proud of the person she helped raise surpassing her in skill, she drugged her and tried to kill her because she knew she couldn’t take her on fairly. Like, this movie is so messy but in the best way!!!! Lastly, the end was always kind of murky for me: when Jen jumped, did she fly or did she die? I wanna believe she flew and was finally able to enjoy her freedom. But given that she jumped from the top of a mountain, that doesn’t seem likely. For the sake of optimism, let’s just go with the former.☺️
P.S. While all of Jen’s fight scenes were bomb, my favorites were anytime she fought Shu Lien!🥰 Especially when they fought at Wudan Temple and Shu Lien showcased her skill by showing out with like seven different weapons!!!!

Yu Shu Lien vs. Melinda May
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember: don't vote on "who would win in a fight", but on "who, when given a task that fits her skillset and talents, would do that task better: more comprehensively, faster, with more pizzazz, with less collateral, etc."
Endorsements! "What is she good at?"
Yu Shu Lien, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Accomplished businesswoman and proficient fighter in a world lead by men Yu Shu Lien lives a life as close to independent as possible. The only one who was able to defeat Jen Yu wielding the Green Destiny besides the sword's owiginal owner, Li Mu Bai.
Melinda May, Marvel: She is a SHIELD specialist, she is a fighter, she even trains superheroes! *-*

Week 7 Blog Essay: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and the Comparison to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
(TWO FILM ESSAY)
By Jensen Boles
Tumblr media
In the year of 1974, Tobe Hooper directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He was also known for directing films such as Eggshells (1969), Poltergeist (1982), as well as the sequel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986).
youtube
Above is the original theatrical trailer for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Tobe Hooper's casting choice for this film mainly consists of unknown actors consisting of Gunnar Hansen, Marylin Burns, Edwin Neal, Paul A. Partain and Jim Seidow. While these actors were unknown at the time, they did eventually gain some recognition from horror fans, thanks to this film. Gunnar Hansen who played Leatherface in the film, even stated in an interview "Yes. And in fact, once Chainsaw came out, I started getting asked to be in films."
The story of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is set in the same year the film came out, being 1974. The story of this film follows five friends who head to rural Texas to visit the gravesite of one of their grandfathers which has been desecrated. While on their way they stumble upon a psychopathic hitchhiker and an abandoned house that's home to a chainsaw wielding, cannibalistic psycho, named Leatherface along with the rest of his family who are also psychopaths and cannibals who are also known for tormenting their victims.
The film was known for having a low production budget consisting of only $140,000 and having a cast of mainly unknown actors as mentioned above. However the film made $26,572,161 for the worldwide box office. The film was also known for being really controversial due to its excessive violence and disturbing content which got the film banned in the UK for 25 years. The film was also inspired by the real life serial killer known as Ed Gein.
Despite the film's low budget and controversy at the time, the film was still praised by fans as well as a few critics such as Roger Ebert who stated "It’s also without any apparent purpose, unless the creation of disgust and fright is a purpose. And yet in its own way, the movie is some kind of weird, off-the-wall achievement. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to make a movie like this, and yet it’s well-made, well-acted, and all too effective." Roger Ebert was stating that despite the unconventional elements along with the film's low budget and controversy, the film was still effective and enjoyable in the horror genre.
Tumblr media
Moving onto my second film of the week, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which was released in the year 2000 and has a totally different plot which is set in 19th century Qing Dynasty, China and involves a young Chinese warrior named Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi) who steals a sword from a famous swordsman named Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat). Li Mu Bai was originally going to give his sword to a young female warrior, Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) before it was stolen by Jen. Yu Shu-Lien, then gives chase to Jen and along the way, she encounters bitter loose ends, fervent passions, and an unconquerable desire for freedom.
Tumblr media
Above is a still frame from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon that consists of Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) about to battle Jen Yu (Zhang Ziyi) in the most iconic scene from the movie.
In comparison to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had a larger production budget consisting of $15,000,000 and made $213,966,221 worldwide. The film has also won an Academy Award for best cinematography as well as a Saturn Award for best Action/Adventure film.
The film has also garnered praise by fans and critics alike. Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian said "In the old-fashioned entertainment that it delivers, and in its inspired combination of seriousness and playfulness, Crouching Tiger is already assuming the lineaments of a classic." I think Peter Bradshaw makes a good point because the film is still considered a classic to this day and the cinematography still holds up today as well.
All in all, both of these films are totally different from one another because of the different budgets, the different setting, and the different style of films. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had a lower budget and was set in Texas in the year of 1974, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon however, had a higher budget and was a period piece set in 19th century China. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was also a horror film which had gained some controversy over the years, while Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was based off of a Chinese novel and had won awards for best cinematography and for best action film. Even the actors for both films are considered different, while The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had unknown actors at the time, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had a few well known actors, yet some of the actors weren’t known well amongst certain audiences.

music and film
music : what kind of music do they like ? do they have any specific favorite artists / bands ?
her favourite genre is definitely indie/alternative, but she also enjoys pop and classic rock a lot. she also casually enjoys a lot of old early 2000's kpop (girls generation, brown-eyed girls, 2NE1.)
she definitely gravitates towards artists like mitski, noah kahan, gregory alan isakov, maggie rogers, phoebe bridgers, florence + the machine, laufey.
she also heavily gravitates towards wlw artists like renee rapp, fletcher, muna, girl in red, kehlani, hayley kiyoko, brandi carlile, boygenius, chappell roan, beabadoobee. and in addition, she really enjoys music from taylor swift, sabrina carpenter, halsey, lady gaga, in terms of top 40.
she has a very large classic rock playlist for when she's at the dojo, it is so big that you'd think a middle-aged man made it. bryan adams, guns n' roses, the who, CCR, aerosmith, black sabbath, led zeppelin, quite literally every classic rock hype song you can think of. the only other playlist she will train to is the playlist she has labeled "glitter gel pen songs".
film : what’s their favorite movies ( or in the case of muses that haven’t seen them, what WOULD be their favorite movies ? )
there is no universe where suki would not have been raised on the films of our lord and saviour michelle yeoh. crouching tiger, hidden dragon will always be her favourite movie, and the sword fight scene between jen and shu lien was absolutely suki's bi awakening. though suki has seen a lot of classic martial arts movies, michelle yeoh movies were quintessential to her upbringing and always her favourites. she does also have a soft spot for kill bill vol. 1 and 2, particularly because she had a crush on every woman in that movie.
she also really loves girlhood/womanhood movies like sisterhood of the traveling pants, ladybird, little women (all of the iterations), steel magnolias, fried green tomatoes, frances ha, and the farewell. these are her feel-good "i need to have a good cry" movies.
on the complete opposite of the spectrum, she LOVES horror movies. supernatural and science fiction horror are her favourite subgenres, she doesn't really enjoy slasher films much at all. favourites include but are not limited to alien, aliens, the exorcist, the vvitch, the conjuring, the blair witch project, nope, the thing, jennifer's body, and annihilation. kudos to anyone who can make it through a horror movie with suki, she gets so happy when someone watches them with her.
