Secrets (1971)
Going through my list of "Watch Later" files on my YouTube account, I came across the subject of this post. 1970s British cinema is among the cream of the crop in the history of film and having people like Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Powell as the stars would be an advantage. Unfortunately, Philip Saville's "Secrets", which also includes Swedish film legend Per Oscarsson and Oscar nominated actress Shirley Knight, is part of the bargain basement collection of leftover soap opera bits and faux Ingmar Bergman scenarios.
The story takes place in less than 24 hours and involves a faltering marriage between two closed minded people Jennifer (Bisset) and Allan (Powell) and their daughter Judy (Tarka Kings). The opening scene shows Jennifer and Judy at the laundromat and like a scene out of "Rugrats", Jennifer leaves Judy behind for some fresh air. While she's being wooed by wealthy businessman Raoul (Oscarsson), because she reminds him of his late wife, Judy is led to the house of a fellow laundromat customer named Raymond (Thomas Ellice). On the other side of town, Alan is taking an exam for his job and strikes up a conversation with the female proctor named Beatrice (Knight). For the duration of the afternoon, the 3 members of this family are in the companies of complete strangers where betrayals and passions are prevalent.
"Secrets" has the formula for a fascinating story, but not much character development and plot progression is thought out. Director and writer Saville creates a trio of stories where none of the characters are fascinating, and you gradually care less and less about them while the film drudgingly goes on. Part of it is that the film is less than 90 minutes and leaves little to no room for the characters to gain any kind of sympathy with the audience. Most insulting is that of the plot involving the daughter, who is put in a situation of possible harm by a complete stranger while her mother is at another stranger's house. There is a moment where Judy straddles Raymond like two lovers making out that is done in the most trivialized and tasteless manner. The worst thing is that there is no consequence of this terrible act put forth on any of the parents or the girl herself. By the end of the film, every single character is held at the highest levels of contempt.
Bisset, Powell, Oscarsson and Knight are four acting legends all held in great regard in much better content, but in this schlock, they are maneuvering a script not worthy of their talents. Bisset, in particular, acts in the same passive monotone voice from start to finish, like her character commits adultery and neglects her child on a daily basis. Powell's booming voice is put to waste with boring voiceover monologues, that only demonstrate how childish his character really is. As the two respective home-wrecking lovers, Knight and Oscarsson bring little chemistry to the bedroom, with limp sex scenes that lack passion. Oscarsson does have a good scene where he recounts how his wife was diagnosed with a terminal illness after giving birth to their child and for only a few minutes, you'd think you were watching an adequate film.
The big secret about "Secrets" is that it's a terrible film that no one knows about, nor should ever see it and take seriously as a work of art. It's best viewed with Servo, Crow, Statler and Waldorf in the peanut gallery making wisecracks.
3/10

Page 31: Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber may look like the picture-perfect couple, but Justin admits that their first year of marriage wasn't what he expected, saying it was really tough and there was just a lack of trust and he blamed the strain on his own personal struggles and said before he didn't have someone to love or someone to pour into but now, more than two years after exchanging vows with Hailey, he has that
* Kacey Musgraves' romance with Dr. Gerald Onuoha is giving her butterflies -- the pair are so happy they found each other and while Kacey, who split from her husband Ruston Kelly last summer, is trying not to get too ahead of herself, her connection to the Nashville-based doc is off the charts and it's got the potential to go a very long way
* Today's Savannah Guthrie is thankful to have husband Michael Feldman in her life, especially given the demands of her early morning work schedule
Page 32: Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are getting serious -- all the details on their whirlwind romance
Page 33: Adapting to parenthood has been a breeze for Emma Stone and she's soaking in all the precious moments of being a mom for the first time -- she and husband Dave McCary welcomed their baby daughter in March and Emma is super protective and a very hands-on mom and Dave is also hands-on and helps with their daughter -- thanks to the little one, Emma's marriage with the comedian has also gotten stronger and having a baby has brought them closer in a way they never expected -- Emma is looking forward to getting back to work; she's taken this time off to embrace motherhood and her number one priority is to raise a healthy baby so that's what she's focused on right now
* Britney Spears is setting the record straight -- despite her ongoing conservatorship battle with her dad, Jamie Spears, she is doing totally fine, assuring fans that she's extremely happy and she has a beautiful home, beautiful children and she's taking a break right now because she's enjoying herself -- although the legal drama with her father is heating up, Britney is staying strong and she has this wonderful ability to see the positive even when the odds are against her
* Keeping Up With Us -- production for the Downton Abbey sequel is underway, Mossimo Giannulli is a free man, Chrissy Teigen returned to Twitter 23 days after announcing that she was leaving the platform, Vanessa Bryant remembered her late husband Kobe Bryant on what would have been their 20th wedding anniversary, Helen McCrory lost her battle with cancer at age 52 according to her husband Damian Lewis

Page 36: Moms Tell All -- Happy Mother's Day! From milestones and manners to rules and nanny-bans, celebs and insiders talk about raising kids in Hollywood
Page 37: Bindi Irwin says life at home with her daughter Grace Warrior has been positively blissful and her family with dad Chandler Powell is so full of love, adding that the newborn has already met some of the wildlife at the Australia Zoo where Bindi and Chandler live and work and of course she's seen some crocs and really lit up when she saw them -- while the Aussie conservationist is sad Grace won't get to meet her late dad Steve Irwin, Bindi's brother Robert Irwin and mom Terri Irwin have been by her side constantly and Robert is obsessed with Grace and has been helping out so much and her mom has been the biggest guiding light and she's already taught Bindi so much about being a mother, both in how she raised her and by showing her things day by day and Terri is quite the baby whisperer and she's so great a calming Grace down when she's crying -- first-time father Chandler is also a natural with Grace and he's been the most supportive and involved dad and together, he and Bindi make such a great team -- for now, Bindi, who stars with Chandler in Crikey! It's a Baby!, is hoping Grace will follow in her animal-activist footsteps, saying having three generations of strong women working as conservationists is a dream come true
* Jennifer Garner said teaching your kids is a lifelong job, and certainly values are something you have to show them -- Jennifer, who shares kids Violet, Seraphina and Samuel with ex Ben Affleck, is staying true to her word and has led by example when it comes to things like kindness and patience and she won't let anyone in the house to judge or speak ill of people, and she enforces the same wholesome, traditional values that she was raised with and the kids have been taught to be loving, hardworking and fair -- Jennifer has always taken a kids-come-first approach to parenting, and it shows as they bake together, enjoy movie nights, read books and have very active lives and it's a very healthy, happy household filled with laughter and love
Page 38: Gwen Stefani has her hands full with her sons Kingston, Zuma and Apollo with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale, but she wouldn't want it any other way -- Gwen's a tomboy, so having three boys wasn't daunting for her at all, plus she has fiance Blake Shelton by her side to pitch in with parenting duties and Gwen and the boys have a blast at Blake's ranch in Oklahoma where they enjoy riding their ATVs, and they play baseball and football -- it's not all fun and games, though because Gwen is big on boundaries and manners and she doesn't want to raise Hollywood brats and it's important to her that her sons be gentlemen
* Meghan Markle's pregnancy with Archie was no walk in the park, as she revealed during her bombshell TV interview with husband Prince Harry, the couple had concerns over whether or not the royal family would provide security for their son and claimed there were conversations about his skin color -- but this time around, as Meghan and Harry gear up for baby No. 2 at home in L.A., she's doing everything her way, without the royals and Meghan and Harry feel blessed that they're able to raise their daughter in the U.S. and can live by their own rules and make the decisions they feel are best for their children; having independence is the most important thing for Meghan and she's got free rein to be exactly the kind of mom she wants to be -- her parenting style is really like most mothers out there, and she's been craving pasta and doing yoga two times a day as her due date nears and she keeps a lot of art supplies out to foster creativity and healthy snacks around and she's a devoted mom and wants the best for her kids
Page 39: Kate Hudson has a lot on her plate, so the mom of three, who shares son Ryder with former husband Chris Robinson and son Bingham with ex Matt Bellamy and daughter Rani with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa, knows when to put her foot down as things can get a little overwhelming at times for Kate, but when she says no, it absolutely means no, and the kids respect her very much because of that
* Gigi Hadid, who shares daughter Khai with boyfriend Zayn Malik, wants to spend every waking moment with her precious little girl -- Gigi could easily afford to employ a team of nannies but chooses not to and she prefers to do everything herself and besides, she can't bear to be away from Khai for more than a few hours
* Candace Cameron Bure's three grown kids are flying the coop, but she's still super involved in their lives, despite slowly becoming an empty nester -- the mom of Natasha, Lev, and Maksim with former hockey player Valeri Bure says it's been a very transitional time and she's been trying to help them make decisions they feel good about and it's challenging, but they're figuring it out
Page 40: Oh, Baby! Meghan Markle's due date is just around the corner, and here are all the details
* Bump Brigade -- Halsey, Gal Gadot, Shawn Johnson East

ED BOOKS
I stole this from mpa (because I wanted to save it) but I’m going to highlight those I’VE READ... also I might add some others as time goes...
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson (it was a good read!)
Solitaire by Aimee Liu * (Considered first anorexia memoir. Thus, there are points when EDs aren't completely understood, but still totally worth the read. Available through KU.)
Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain by Portia de Rossi (it was really good and real tbh)* (One of my faves! A memoir that really captivated me)
Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia * (Really is what it says on the tin and so much more. This memoir captures the darkest parts of EDs and is done very logically, stabilizing itself with facts that are intermixed by the chaos of EDs).
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen (Romance)
Thin by Lauren Greenfield (Nonfiction elements. Like the TV documentary of the same name, but of course, the book has more details.)
The Best Little Girl in the World by Steven Levenkron (NOT like the movie. Based on research of EDs in figure skating and gymnastics.)
Perfect by Natasha Friend
Purge: Rehab Diaries by Nicole J. Johns
Skinny by Ibi Kasliky
Loud Girl in the House of Myself: A Memoir of a Strange Girl by Stacy Pershall
Gaining: The Truth about Life After EDs by Aimee Liu (same author as Solitaire)
Identical by Ellen Hopkins * (Written in same manner as her other books, which is basically more like a poem than traditional novel format. LOVE this book and recommend the authors other, non ED books)
Letting Ana Go by Anonymous
Massive by Julia Bell
Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen (Romance)
Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves
She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb
Thin by Grace Bowman (memoir)
The Disappearing Girl by Heather Topham Wood (Romance, KU)
After the Strawberry by Adrienne Maria Vrettos
Purge by Sarah Darer Littman
Beautiful Me by Natasha Jennings
Hunger Point by Jillian Medoff (it was okay, the sister of mc has an ed)
Pointe by Brandy Colbert (Very dramatic. Deals with sexual abuse and also kidnapping in addition to an ED. Still not sure how I feel about this book, but a read that is very interesting, especially for those who like reading all things ballet. Also, this is nice because a black girl is not only a ballet dancer, but also has an ED, which is not portrayed enough!)
Looks by Madeleine George
Kessa by Steven Levenkron (I'd say this is probably for younger readers, but hey, you're never too old to read any book in my mind!)
My Sister's Bones by Cathi Hanauer * (Really liked this book and it isn't necessarily because of the ED part of it. I just like the whole feel and author's style)
Parperweight by Meg Haston
You Remind Me of You: A Poetry Memoir by Eireann Corrigan
Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics' Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders and Elusive Olympic Dreams by Jennifer Sey (Wow, that's a mouth full!)
Believarexic by J.J. Johnson
Feeling For Bones by Bethany Pierce
More Than You Can Chew by Marnelle Tokio
A Dance of Sisters by Tracey Porter
Gravity Journal by Gail Sobat
Elena Vanishing by Elena Dunkle (A memoir written with her mother)
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver (Haven't read this in a long time, but I remember liking it)
A Trick of the Light by Lois Metzger * (One of my favourites! About a male with an ED.)
Starved by Michael Somers (Another good male ED novel)
Reckoning Daze by Michael Beaulieu (Currently free kindle edition is available)
Thin (Sharing Spaces Book 3) by Alicia Michaels (This is part of a romance series and is the third book. This one focuses on the ED character, but there are hints to the ED in other books. You don't necessarily need to read the other books in the series and can figure things out without reading them first. I actually read this book before the others)
Cake Dreams: A Memoir of Survival by Hoyt Phillips * (Another male ED book. Great multi-faceted portrayal of EDs and general metal illness. Available on KU)
Not My Father's Son: A Memoir by Alan Cumming * (It's been a while since I've read it, but I recall there being an ED. The book does not focus on the ED, but it is thrown in there, adding to an already fascinating, interesting read.)
Nothing by Robin Friedman (Another male ED book)
Lighter and Weightless (books 1 and 2 of Begin Again Duet series) by Gia Riley (Romance and available on KU)
...And All Shall Fade to Black by Layla Dorine (Gay Romance, male with ED, available on KU).
Still Water: A Boys of Bellamy Novel by Ruthie Luhnow (Gay romance, male with ED, available on KU)
Four Weeks, Five people by Jennifer Yu * (A male wannabe rock star with an ED. He is 1/5th of the main characters who all have other mental disorders and have been sent away to camp to help with their various mental illnesses).
Phat (Escape From Reality series) by Taylor Henderson (Part of a series. KU)
Life-size (no, not like the Lindsey Lohan movie) by Jenefer Shute (Available through Kindle unlimited)
Love Struck (Star Struck Series) by Amber Garza (Romance series. KU).
Fake Perfect Me by Cari Kamm (KU)
Out of Breath (Exposed Series) by Hazel Kelly (KU).
The Kaitlyn Chronicles series by Elaine Babich (Series, for younger readers. KU).
Please Don't Go by Elizabeth Benning (A bulimic sent to a residence to recover and teams up with anorexic former enemy in hopes of escaping)
Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen * (very great!! I loved this one, it’s not only about the ed, but human nature and emotions) (A classic novel that everyone interested in metal health should read).
Do or Die (Fight or Flight Series #4) by Jamie Canosa (Romance series. KU).
Hungry: One Woman's Battle and Victory over Anorexia and Bulima by Jessica Skinner (The title pretty much says all you need to know. KU).
My Perfect Little Secret by Rebecca Coppage (KU).
Anorexic: The True Story of An Anorexia Survivor Who Found Love by Anna Paterson (This is romantic, but I wouldn't call it romance. KU).
Balance of Control by Stephanie Nance
Running in Silence: My Drive for Perfection and the Eating Disorder that Fed it by Rachael Rose Steil
My Not-So Secret by B.P. Morrison (KU).
26 Beats per Minute by Dez Wilder (Male with ED. Memoir. KU).
Summer Fades by Amanda Bews (KU).
It's Never Enough (Book 1 in Never Series) by Susan Soares (Series. KU).
Restricted: A Novel of Half-truths by Jennifer Kinsel * (KU).
Chrysalis by L.A. Field, Gary Thaller * (KU).
A Slow Fade by Brooke Melius (KU).
All We Ever Wanted: Unmasking the Silent Battle by Alexandra Wnuk (KU).
Life Hurts: A Doctor's Personal Journey Through Anorexia by Dr. Eliabeth Mcnaught *
A Fork in the Road by Rebekah Wilson (KU).
Skin Deep (Stolen Breaths series) by Pamela Sparkman (Romance Series. KU).
Feeding the Heart (Heart Series) by Marion Myles (Romance Series. KU).
Anorexic Annie by Sarah Burleton * (KU).
The Downside of Being Charlie by Jenny Torres Sanchez * (Male with ED, the ED is not a huge part of the book, but also deals with family dysfunction, which I always find interesting).
The Art of Starving by Sam J. Miller * (This is very interesting. Male with ED. Deals with super powers! Though, it could just be the ED causing the protagonist to think he has powers, but I'll let you be the judge!)
Skinny Boy: A Young Man's Battle and Triumph Over Anorexia by Gary A. Grahl
It Was Me All Along: A Memoir by Andie Mitchell * (about binge eater who lost weight)
Safety in Numbers by Brittany Burgunder *
Skinny: She was starving to fit in... (False reflections book 1) by Laura L. Smith (Currently free kindle edition is available).
When You Fall by Alex Karola * (through Wattpad. Not finished yet, but is a great read!)
Inner Hunger: A Young Woman's Struggle Through Anorexia and Bulimia by Marianne Apostolides
Empty: A Story of Anorexia by Christie Pettit
Inside Out: Portrait of an Eating Disorder by Nadia Shivack
Not Otherwise Specified by Hannah Moskowitz *
All Good Things Die in LA by Anhoni Patel *
Jane in Bloom by Deborah A. Lytton (Another one for younger readers. Still, a nice read)
Gravity Journal by Gail Sidonie Sobat
What I Lost by Alexandra Ballard *
This Impossible Light by Lily Myers (told in verse)
Sad Perfect by Stephanie Elliot (the girl has avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder)
Beautiful Bodies by Kimberly Rae Miller * (this is a KU book and is a fairly new release as of 7/28/17. It is about disordered eating and chronic dieting, not a full blown ED; however, I still enjoyed it and recommend it).
Shattered Image: My Triumph over Body Dysmorphic Disorder by Brian Cuban * (KU, male memoir detailing ED struggle and primarily his struggle with BDD)
Sugar by Deirdre Riordan Hall (KU)

The Vegetarian by Han Kang (it’s very good and wild. It also tackles on feminism and societal issues as well)
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami (it’s a great book. The ed is not the main point but there is a character suffering from one)

Libations: Pouring One Out for Your (Godly) Homie
Libations are a wonderfully straight forward concept within the realm of ancient Greek ritual. They happened. They happened a lot. The excess of libations and the manner they were carried out were very Greek–so intrinsically tied to how the Greeks did ritual that when Greeks observed other countries doing religious rituals they explicitly mentioned the lack of libations. For instance, when describing the Persians:
In describing Persian sacrifice, Herodotus seems to concentrate specifically on those aspects which differentiated it from the Greek. They had no altar, fire, libation, flute-music, garlands or sprinkled meal; the sacrificer crowned his head-dress, usually with myrtle, took the animal to a holy place and called on the god. Prayers for king and country only were allowed. (The Greek World)
And again when describing the Scythians:
The Scythians similarly did not use statues, altars or temples, except of Ares. Their method of sacrifice was always the same: the victim’s front feet were tied together, and the sacrificer pulled on the rope from behind to throw the animal down, before calling on the appropriate god. He put a noose round its neck, with a short stick under the cord which he twisted until the creature was choked. There was no fire, no offering of first-fruits, no libation. (The Greek World)
We can assess from these examples that libations were a predominately, if not uniquely, ancient Greek tradition. Nearly every dinner mention involves a libation (even without an accompanying offering or sacrifice). Libations were also used in what are called propitiatory sacrifices and offerings–these are also known as “appeasement” offerings (it is noted repeatedly that Zeus gets the predominate amount of these as a household god and as the ruler of the pantheon). They were also, naturally, used during rituals and festivals as part of the ceremonies. However, I hesitate to say libations took place during every offering and sacrifice. After all, the reasons for why the ancient Greeks would offer to the gods are endless and they would not offer a libation while gifting, say, a small tin trinket to a temple.
Now, how does one give libations in a traditional manner? You have a liquid (traditionally it would be honey, milk, wine, oil, and/or water), you decide who the liquid will be given to (and dedicating it to the whole pantheon is completely fine) and then you sprinkle out some drops or pour out a small amount. And you consume the rest. The sprinkle/pour step can happen before or after you partake in the rest of the liquid. That’s all there is to libations. As far as rituals go, I’d say they are probably the easiest and most accessible. The language, the liquid and the dedication are completely interchangeable. What matters is intent, giving a portion to the gods, and drinking the rest.
Libations are the best case of the whole mentality of the majority of Hellenic offerings which is “a part for the whole”. Holocaustal offerings are a different thing altogether and were reserved for certain situations or ceremonies. Regular rituals, most festivals and every day offerings were of the mentality that you gave freely to the gods when you could and the gods reciprocated with their own affections and good feeling. And every day offerings were a much more relaxed affair. As it says in Greek Folk Religion, “At the end of the daily meal a few drops of unmixed wine were poured out on the floor as a libation to Agathos Daimon.” (pg 46) This casual approach is a common mention. After all, think of the wide variety of personal practices we all have–most people are going to be more casual in their worship and relationship with the gods then, say, high priests.
An interesting case that perfectly encapsulates the idea that libations were offered “a part for a whole” is actually found in a case law book entitled Trials from Ancient Athens by Christopher Carey. Carey includes a transcription from a testimony from a homicide case and the witness states:
After dinner, naturally, since one was sacrificing to Zeus of Possessions and entertaining the other, and one was about to go on a voyage and was dining with a close friend, they made a libation and offered incense for their future. And while Philoneos’ concubine was pouring the libation for them – as they offered prayers which would never be fulfilled, gentlemen – she poured in the poison. Thinking she was being clever, she gave more to Philoneos in the belief perhaps that if she gave him more she would win more affection from him – she had no idea that she was my stepmother’s dupe until disaster struck – while she poured less in our father’s drink. They for their part after pouring their libations took their final drink, holding in their hands their own killer. (39)
This is wonderful because it gives us the full timeline of a traditional libations one would see at a dinner (not during a formal ceremony). The murderer pours the poison into the drinks because she knows for a certainty that they will be drinking from the cup. The amount given during a libation is also evidently left up to the individual. However, it clearly shows that the libation is done at a flexible time (pg 131, Ancient Greek Cults). Despite other examples showing libations being performed as a first or only offering, these gentlemen are taking their libations after merriment and sacrifice had already been performed. Therefore, we can conclude that unless one is following a precise ritual, the timing of sacrifices, offerings and/or libations is purely up to both the situation and the worshiper. Additionally, we have the certainty that you were expected to not drink a portion of the drink, unlike in a food offering in which it is normally the exception, not the rule, that you consume all edible portions.
An important thing to know and remember, however, is that despite the evidence sometimes presented that many chthonic offerings were “sober” or “wineless”:
In a chthonian sacrifice (denoted by enagismos and other terms), the victim is black or dark, the somber sacrifice is performed at night on a low altar or over a pit, and there is no meal: the animal is burned completely. Chthonians are also thought to prefer wineless libations of milk, honey, and water. These generalizations fail because many supernaturals with a strong chthonian character, especially the heroes, regularly received festive, participatory sacrifices. In the study of Greek cults, it may be preferable to abandon the concept of a strong opposition between Olympian and chthonian deities, since the character of a given deity depends upon the context. (page 12, Ancient Greek Cults)
I understand that this was long but it can be easily summed up as thus: libations are an important and vital part of the everyday rituals of Hellenic polytheism. They can be casual or high ritual, propitiatory or thank offerings. As long as one sprinkles or pours out a small portion and directs their libation to an entity or a group of spirits/deities you can successfully complete a libation. Libations, in short, are for everyone.
A Parting Side Note:
Things that I came across in my readings that are of note but I will not be discussing here because of the depth of discussion they need and deserve: philosophical debate as to how libations reach the Theoi, the debate on the devaluation of the distinction between khthonic and Olympian gods, the discussion on why the gods themselves gave libations, libations used in potentially psychedelic rituals (like Eleusian Mysteries or the waters at certain Oracle temples) and why khthonic libations are so often “sober”. Perhaps I will do future posts devoted to each particular topic or perhaps someone else will get there before I do. Regardless, these are all obviously linked closely with libations and are important for a deeper understanding and fascinating topics; however, I do not have the time, energy, or post space to cover them at this point.

Mississippi students allowed to read To Kill a Mockingbird – with a parent's note
Biloxi officials had pulled novel from lesson plan for junior high students
Parents complained that language in the book ‘makes people uncomfortable’
Junior high school students in Biloxi, Mississippi will be allowed after all to read To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee’s classic novel of race and racism in the American south, as part of their regular study – but only with permission from a parent.
Earlier this month, the Sun Herald reported that administrators pulled the novel from the eighth-grade lesson plan because language in the book “makes people uncomfortable”.
An email to the newspaper from a reader said the use of the word “nigger” was the reason for the book being pulled. The parent who complained about the book told a school board meeting students “were laughing out loud” at the word.
“Is there not a better way to teach about that era and the horrors of that era, other than having kids laughing in class when the N-word is said?” Yolanda Williams asked. “It should not be required reading for all students. My child shouldn’t have to sit in that class like that.”
Biloxi public schools superintendent Arthur McMillan subsequently said that though the book was no longer required reading, it remained available to students.
“This book has not been banned,” he said, “this book has not been taken away from students, no school policy has been violated and students continue to be afforded the opportunity to read and study this book.”
The Sun Herald reported this week that Biloxi Junior High principal Scott Powell wrote to parents of eighth-graders to say teachers would now “offer the opportunity for interested students to participate in an in-depth book study of the novel during regularly scheduled classes as well as the optional after school sessions”.
Students interested in studying the Pulitzer prize-winning 1960 book – and the Oscar-winning 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, the lawyer who defends a black man accused of raping a white woman in depression-era Alabama – were required to have a permission slip signed by a parent and a teacher, the paper said. Students who did not wish to read the book would be assigned an alternative title.
Lee died last year at 89 after the publication of another novel, Go Set a Watchman, that describes events after those depicted in To Kill a Mockingbird and also contains depictions of issues of race that many modern readers have found uncomfortable.
The Biloxi decision to withdraw To Kill a Mockingbird from class study – following similar cases in the US – caused national outcry and made headlines around the world.
Jennifer Riley Collins, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi, said in a statement:“In a state like Mississippi, where we continue to deal with racial injustices and discrimination even today, it is critical that our students have the opportunity to engage on the themes presented in To Kill a Mockingbird.”
In a letter to the Biloxi school board, the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Connecticut offered help in teaching great books that deal with difficult language and subjects in manners now considered outdated.
Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, published in 1884, has been the subject of similar controversy over its attitudes and language and the presence of a character named Nigger Jim.
“Great literature makes us uncomfortable,” the letter read. “It changes how we think, forcing us to analyze our established points of view.”

Trouble Is My Business

Trouble is My Business (2018) Tom Konkle
Trouble is My Business (2018) 113 min.
A Lumen Actus Production directed by Tom Konkle
(This review originally appeared in the print publication The Dark Pages: The Newsletter for Film Noir Lovers, March/April 2018 issue.)
I’m sure there’s an axiom written down somewhere for people involved in any creative endeavor: the more time that separates you from any historical era, the harder it is to recreate it. It’s certainly true of film noir. If you have enough money, you can replicate the suits, the dresses, the cars, the hairstyles, and all the rest. That’s the easy part. The real challenge is in deciding whether you’re going to do a homage or a parody, a tribute or a send-up. That decision will determine the writing, acting, direction, pacing, and practically every aspect of the project. Trouble is My Business is that rare film that manages to give audiences a visual noir feast as the backdrop of an excellent story, all the while incorporating comedic elements that never waver into the territory of parody.
Even from the very beginning, we sense we’re in good hands. A lonesome trumpet yearns over a piano and strings as the credits appear in a font that could be a first cousin to the one used in Double Indemnity. Outside a city building, a man wearing a trench coat and a fedora waits. A sedan approaches, its headlights burning into the night before the car stops. The man gets in and with the upper portion of his face illuminated, says to the driver, “Take me to the cemetery. She’s still alive.”
In a flashback (What film noir is complete without one?) we learn that the man in the trench coat is Roland Drake (Tom Konkle), a P.I. facing an eviction notice and feeling the aftereffects of a failed missing persons case. Into his office walks Catherine Montemar, a dark-haired beauty in a black dress handing Drake another missing persons case: Catherine’s father has just disappeared and she fears her sister may be next. As easily as Catherine walks into Drake’s office, she also slides into his bed, but the next morning Drake wakes up alone with blood-soaked sheets. As Drake tries to process this, there’s a knock on his door. A loud knock.
As with most good film noir stories, this is just the beginning.Trouble is My Business is filled with familiar film noir touches that will surprise audiences not by their inclusion, but rather by the care taken in breathing life into them. It’s easy to make a scene more “noirish” by adding slanted shadows from window blinds, slowly spinning ceiling fans and two-piece rotary telephones, but not so easy to have the essence of noir seep through. Case in point: when Jennifer Montemar (Brittney Powell) hires Drake to find out what happened to her sister Catherine, Drake isn’t quite sure she’s on the level. Drake’s skepticism is conveyed visually as he circumnavigates both his desk and the seated Catherine, all the while walking in the shadows of the ceiling fan. The camera follows both players in this cat-and-mouse game as Drake gains confidence and Catherine loses hers. Or does she? It’s a moment that’s better than it has to be. Seasoned noir audiences notice and appreciate such things.
Fans will also appreciate a tip of the hat to several classic noir films. Caspar Gutman’s story of the black bird in The Maltese Falcon (1941) comes to mind during Jennifer’s tale of a stolen family diamond. A nice Vertigo (1958) moment occurs when Drake stands outside the Montemar mansion looking in. A movie marquee in the background of one scene announces the showing of Build My Gallows High, the novel on which Out of the Past (1947) was based. Such touches are most welcome, like an unexpected visit from an old friend.
Konkle’s performance as Drake is everything a noir fan could ask for: an average Joe with an everyman face, a wise-cracking manner, and that precarious balance of intensity and indifference that eludes so many actors attempting P.I. roles. Powell (Stacy’s Mom) is stunning as Jennifer: tough and desperate, vulnerable and vehement, coy and aggressive. Although Vernon Wells as Detective Barry Tate goes a bit over the top, the supporting performances are generally excellent. (Jana Banker does more acting with her eyes in a few brief moments as a hotel receptionist than most actors can do given an hour.)
Director Konkle stays true to the roots of film noir, yet isn’t afraid to have fun. Trouble is My Business has a strong noir look and structure that will appeal to veteran film noir fans while the action and comedic elements could win over less-seasoned audiences. Such a balancing act is hard to pull off, but Konkle and company have done a masterful job doing so. Trouble is My Business is a marvelous independent film that deserves a wide audience. You can visit the film's website and watch the trailer there (or here, below). The film is available on various streaming and digital platforms. You can also find Blu-ray and DVD editions of the film, including both color and black-and-white versions, at Amazon, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and other online retailers.

The Blogger Divide: Converters or Brand-Builders?
In the mushrooming global of social media, the industry is understanding there are kinds of influencers: people who convert and those who don’t. And both are equally crucial.
Reaching the coveted million follower milestone is what once legitimized an influencer, giving them the cache, star strength and capacity to jot down their very own tickets when it got here to securing projects with manufacturers that would elicit six, and on occasion even seven, parent fees.
Buy a brand new divide upon entry into this coveted membership is taking shape.
Once a blogger attains a positive reputation they’re capable of correctly forcing sales or brand recognition — but rarely each. Many of the influencers with fans within the numerous thousands and thousands don’t really circulate the needle in relation to conversion, in keeping with brands and industry experts. At the equal time, a developing number of online talent with followings at just underneath or in the 1,000,000 variety is proving to have a selling electricity that trumps their friends with five to ten instances that range of followers.
A character employed via a logo that has labored with top influencers maintained that of the largest names in the fashion and beauty space — Chiara Ferragni and Kristina Bazan — just don’t convert. Another industry supply mirrored that sentiment.
If a brand’s goal with a marketing campaign is an uptick in income, Ferragni and Bazan are not the expertise you want to work with, this source said. They are, however, who an emblem or fashion designer may need to accomplice with for an emblem recognition campaign.
Others with the deep know-how of the influencer landscape also labeled Aimee Song of Song of Style and Chriselle Lim of The Chriselle Factor as popular for logo attention campaigns who should “go both ways” in relation to driving income.
But low conversion rates are ways from a blogger loss of life sentence. All of the above are nonetheless in an excessive call for, as an instance, due to their abilities to reinforce a logo’s awareness amongst consumers.
Just ask Bazan, who after nearly years nonetheless reportedly boasts the largest contract among a blogger and a logo thus far. She turned into said to have inked a seven-determine cope with L’Oréal on the stop of 2015 and renewed the partnership 12 months later with a good higher rate. Then there’s Ferragni, whose partnerships variety from fronting Pantene for a pronounced $500,000 to running with SK-II earlier this 12 months on a logo-constructing campaign supporting its hero Facial Treatment Essence for a reported multi-hundred thousand greenbacks.
“It’s interesting — there are certain ladies humans work with for logo focus, and quite a few times it’s now not the equal individuals who convert. A lot of times [a brand] works with someone who drives logo recognition and someone who converts. There aren’t that many in this area which can do each,” stated Jennifer Powell, president and founding father of Jennifer Powell Inc., a firm that does branding and method for influencers inclusive of Julie Sariñana of Sincerely Jules, Danielle Bernstein of We Wore What and Rumi Neely.
Powell, who declined to talk to the strengths of any unique influencer, believes that after a person hits 750,000 fans “they could truly move the needle” — from either an cognizance or dollar perspective.
“Sometimes I’ll be like, ‘This individual has such a lot of fans, why don’t they convert?’ It’s a wonder to me,” Powell continued. “When I could sell any person who turned into maybe the largest influencer, and then…they weren’t changing, it turned into a wonder.”
Surprise or not, each camps are proving to be equally a hit.
Take Christine Andrew of Hello Fashion. The 31-yr-old blogger isn’t a front-row fixture at fashion week or one of the influencers flown in by style homes like Dior or Chanel to attend their tricky resort and pre-fall vacation spot indicates. She doesn’t actually have one million fans (she has 940,000). She does, but, sell a ton of product.
Reportedly Andrew lately drove numerous hundreds of hundreds of bucks in sales to nordstrom.Com in just ten days for the duration of the store’s annual Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Andrew declined to touch upon dollar amounts or expenses she incurred as a result of the sale. But based on an average commission of approximately 10 percentage, Andrew got a pleasant cut from Nordstrom’s income. When reached for comment, a Nordstrom spokeswoman said the retailer is “no longer within the practice of discussing information of our man or woman operating relationships, nor can we talk info of influencers’ income era.”
In an interview, Andrew said that any sales she might have pushed throughout the above length weren’t a part of an reputable partnership with Nordstrom. The emblem did sponsor a publish on Hello Fashion on July 24, which became unrelated to any content material Andrews posted among July 13 and July 23.
According to Andrew, she drove a significantly higher amount of sales this 12 months than she did at some stage in the identical time closing year. She attributed the spike in sales prompted by her content to the addition of Instagram Stories due to the convenience of linking out and the potential for fans to just swipe up to shop for a product.
From the looks of it, Andrew’s fulfillment is simply a part of Nordstrom’s multitiered influencer approach that spans collaborations of various tiers. Affiliates force a brief dollar, but the retailer is investing heavily in fostering deeper relationships with on line expertise. In September, Nordstrom will launch an garb collection co-designed with the aid of Arielle Charnas of Something Navy, who has already been documenting the manner to her a million enthusiasts on Instagram. Charnas become reportedly paid a charge from the store up front and also will get a cut of income once the line launches.
To Andrew, promoting energy isn’t a numbers sport. It’s approximately the type of fans one has, no longer always how many followers one has.
“I sense like my audience is a shopping for target market,” Andrew said. “Part of it, too, comes from transparency. I’ve bought stuff and said, ‘Hey, I told you approximately this product and I in reality don’t love it [because] it made my skin break out.’ I’m sincere while things don’t paintings. They trust me and admire my opinion and understand I received’t BS approximately some thing I don’t absolutely like.”
She talked about that she has an unusual vantage factor because she also has her very own apparel line, Ily Couture, which launched a few months earlier than Andrew commenced her Hello Fashion weblog in 2012. She defined that her weblog consists of a aggregate of apparel from her own line and other brands based on “what she’s sporting at the time.” The breakdown isn’t calculated nor does she try to “balance out a percent.”
“I see it from both facets from Ily [Couture] because we pay humans to put on it…We’ve done sponsorships with pinnacle-tier bloggers — who have completed insanely and on occasion we have ones that didn’t. I surely suppose it’s so various to peoples’ audiences, and a few people follow a few bills because they prefer to see what a person is doing and others observe due to the fact they want to realize what a person is buying,” Andrew introduced.
The selling strength influencers wield is a long way from information. Anyone with a smartphone knows that blogger promoting energy is growing — and rapid. WWD formerly stated that fellow Salt Lake City-based blogger Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies changed into stated to have pushed $1 million in sales to nordstrom.Com at some point of the vacation season in 2014, equal to the six-week duration from Thanksgiving through the stop of December.
But what is news is that bloggers are achieving these milestones faster than ever, and in turn seeing their every year earnings skyrocket.
Think approximately it: If Andrew has the strength to persuade several hundred thousand dollars in sales in 10 days, this will — if the fee is maintained — add as much as nearly $2 million in a month, or $24 million in 12 months. That’s a cut of roughly $2.Four million for Andrew (based totally on a commission fee of 10 percentage). And that doesn’t encompass any of her different sales channels, which range from advertising and marketing to Ily Couture, which has its personal e-commerce site at ilycouture.Com.
Karen Robinovitz, cofounder of influencer management company Digital Brand Architects — which counts Andrew as one in every of its clients — as compared the bloggersphere to Hollywood.
“Some humans can open a film, and it’s now not constantly the same man or woman who gets the Oscar. Cate Blanchett is a film superstar but she’s no longer going to pressure attention the manner Jennifer Aniston might. There are blockbuster names and those who simply deliver a overall performance,” Robinovitz stated.
If a emblem’s goal is income, Robinovitz rattled off a listing of influencers she works with whom she deemed “converters” to suit that bill. In addition to Andrew, the group consists of Charnas, Extra Petite’s Jean Wang, Barefoot Blonde’s Amber Fillerup Clark, Mint Arrow’s Corrine Stokoe and Fashioned Chic’s Erica Hoida. She stated Aimee Song of Song of Style, who has 4.6 million fans on Instagram, as an influencer who would usually be commissioned for a emblem recognition marketing campaign.
If a logo is seeking to improve income however also raise its profile, then they have to take a layered method, Robinovitz stated, which equates to participating with a couple of blogger. There is a income motive force and a “emblem focus call” needed for positioning, adjacency and attain — and each are important to reach those end desires.
But while asked how a blogger becomes both a “converter” or a “emblem-builder,” Robinovitz stated it comes down to a few words: inspirational, aspirational and practicable.
She defined: “They’re all developing idea…however usually, with someone who has a very high conversion rate, there’s a reliability which you cannot best appear to be that individual in that outfit, but you may honestly have that life. Oftentimes, with logo focus, [meaning] the those who get certainly big, whilst still viable — it’s no longer as aloof as a magazine editorial — however it feels too a ways-fetched for that to be the life you could have.”
Claire Collins Maysh, widespread manager of U.S. Operations at virtual expertise management organisation Gleam Futures, referred to as 2017 “The Year of the Midtier Influencer.” While hard to outline by way of an exact follower count, Collins Maysh stated bloggers with “masses of heaps of fans” seems to be a candy spot because they have a great audience with out being so big that they lose the direct connection they have got with fans.
She believes that an influencer’s involvement in a product they are selling could have an effect on conversion, too. She stated considered one of her very own clients, Sun Kiss Alba (actual name Alba Ramos), who has nearly 900,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel.
A recent case study from Gleam Futures said that the natural splendor blogger’s conversion prices have been wellknown — however this all modified whilst she cocreated a product with Derma E. Radiant Glow Face Oil by means of Sun Kiss Alba, offered at Ulta Beauty, Whole Foods, Amazon and on dermae.Com is doing “insanely properly” (a quick examine ultabeauty.Com confirmed that the $19.Ninety nine product is bought out), in keeping with Collins Maysh.
“There are a few campaigns I’ve seen [with bloggers] wherein I don’t trust that that character would be using that product…[But] she did her personal product and was very involved…People feel that it’s hers in place of her hawking other humans’s product. It’s some thing she cares about,” Collins Maysh said of Garcia’s turnaround in conversion prices.
That said, she agreed that there are camps of bloggers, and types are getting savvier to what this looks as if. She acknowledged that many bloggers and social media influencers produce “remarkable content” however don’t necessarily have the ability to convert or evoke an interplay from their audience.
“The most they get is probably ‘likes,’ but no longer actually remarks because their content material doesn’t certainly require a reaction. Yes, you may recognize it, however it doesn’t make someone want to store it,” Collins Maysh said.
Again, this isn’t always a terrible thing.
“In the same way that I’m not fully convinced that a huge-time celebrity would convert — this character has the beauty and is on logo the way that maybe [a celebrity] might be — even though that doesn’t convert to income it doesn’t matter. It might simply be about getting attention for the campaigns,” Collins Maysh stated.
She thinks the cause manufacturers in the beginning opted to paintings with influencers, “in place of working with a celeb like Selena Gomez,” is because this group turned into considered as the “anticelebrity” who may want to foster a deeper reference to purchasers. This is no longer the case every now and then as today’s social media landscape has given way to a blurring of the lines. More and greater bloggers are achieving superstar status, with a few now the faces of primary beauty brands and acting on covers of main global print courses, making them “much less approachable.”
Danielle Bernstein of We Wore What, labeled through an enterprise supply as one of these rare bloggers who can each improve emblem attention and power sales, decided to release Second Skin Overalls, her very own line of overalls, in addition to Archive Shoes, a footwear series, after knowing her potential to transport product. Bernstein has 1.7 million Instagram followers.
“Revolve became usually telling me, ‘When you put on this we promote out of it proper away.’ From Revolve to Asos, they advised me that the second one I put up something they sell out of it without delay,” Bernstein said of what gave her confidence to launch not one, but of her own brands on the grounds that overdue remaining yr (she also founded frame jewelry logo Body Bauble 3 years in the past with two near buddies).
According to Bernstein, $70,000 really worth of overalls were offered in the first 3 hours of launching secondskinoveralls.Com in October 2016. During a second smaller “drop” of velvet patterns in advance this year, Bernstein offered $15,000 well worth of product in 30 minutes and almost $26,000 in two-and-a-half-hours. Today she’s launching two of her first-class-promoting normal styles in white on secondskinoveralls.Com.
Even even though Charnas, who shot the campaign for her upcoming Nordstrom collection in New York City’s Madison Square Park closing week, has some months until her own line launches, she’s still busy supporting outlets like Shopbop sell up-and-coming contemporary labels like Petersyn. Charnas posted a photograph of herself sporting a Petersyn pinnacle and skirt weekends in the past and in days, Shopbop bought $forty,500 of tops and skirts mixed.
An enterprise insider even went to this point as to call Charnas “the East Coast Lauren Conrad” of the blogger set, evaluating the 30-yr-vintage influencer’s girl-subsequent-door character to that of Conrad’s, which propelled the latter into fact superstardom years before Instagram even existed. Minus the boyfriend drama and “Speidi,” of course.
