okay so l'academie française gives its members ceremonial swords, and my linguist friends been thinking that proper linguists also ought to be given swords. what kind of swords would be most suitable in your opinion?

Since linguistics involves clarity of expression, their swords should be of very plain design with elegance of proportion, not flamboyance of decoration. Maybe something like this - original in the Met, repro by (defunct) Phoenix Metal Creations.

Swordsmith Peter Johnsson has a theory that correct proportion plays a role in a sword’s balance to help it work right, while also playing a role in its appearance to help it look right.

IMO a sword which “looks right” doesn’t need improved by gilding, enamelling or precious stones. This hasn’t stopped some cutlers from doing so, but there’s no law enforcing good taste.

The Academie Française doesn’t have a “standard” design. Instead its members commission custom work which represents their background in scholarship, science, the arts etc. Here are a couple of their sources: Gassier and Mellerio.

Sometimes the swords are styled after genuine court or military swords, from a historical period favoured by the academic or a notable date in literary history.

Sometimes the personal associations are more pronounced and it’s a case of YMMV...

Their influence is almost certainly accidental - people who make swords for the Academie aren’t likely to be familiar with wallhanger repros at the bottom end of the market.

...but with his trademark sketch profile there’s no doubt who it belongs to...

Thank you! I can’t claim credit for either my mobile header OR my icon (I forget who made the ‘bisexual salt’ header but it’s amazing), but I love them both so much. And I do try. :)

Also, if you are a US-based secondary-level teacher of pretty much any subject (whether high school or college) and are interested in making a little extra money grading AP exams this summer, feel free to hit me up. They have now sent me uh, several emails practically imploring me to reach out to anyone I know who might be interested, so yes -- your odds of being sent an invitation are pretty good. The application process is straightforward; you will usually just need to submit a sample syllabus or course plan or other evidence of having recently taught in your subject.

The money is not necessarily world-beating, but they raised it to $30/hour last year, and at 7 days straight of work, that adds up to enough to do things like buy a new mattress (as I did last year) or subsidize international travel (as I did the year before that and will do again this year). Everything is paid for, including flights and hotel and all meals, and I've enjoyed it enough the last three years that I look forward to doing it again this year. Downside: you have to read student essays, but as we do that in our day jobs anyway, yes. So there. I have done my bit, etc.

I miss being able to see you once a year because you are so lovely and fun to be around and you are one of about four people from the 216 I still truly care about.  

I’m so proud of you for having a real person life and doing so well for yourself.  I know you said you learned a lot from me on the Europe trip but I learned so much from you at the same time.  I love the way you look at the world and things I took for granted were exciting and new.

WIP guessing game: train, cat, sparkle, shelf

Train

“Watari said that exams are really bad this semester, and he can’t afford to take the train out right now,” Kyoutani said.

Wasn’t expecting to be able to find this one!

Cat

“All right, all right!” a guard’s booming voice carried over the crowd. “That’s enough! I’m sure you all have places to be besides gawking at a bunch of  injured people. Go on, scatter!”

This one technically doesn’t appear, but I have a lot of words that “cat” is in the middle of, so I cheated so that I wouldn’t have to leave half of them unanswered.

Sparkle

This one doesn’t appear in any of my WIPs at all! Wasted opportunity. I will rectify that asap.

Shelf

The other Novices tittered, and Aisilu's face burned. She gently picked up the book she was working on and put it away on her shelf, along with the tablet and her ink bottle and pen.

Wasn’t expecting to be able to find this one either! Had to go back to my novel, lol. Man, I’m not looking forward to editing that.

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I’m trying to get better about replies, and I wanted to say thank you!  

There are a lot of canons out there that I adore but don’t have any interest in getting into the fandom, and unfortunately Young Wizards is one of those.  It doesn’t quite have that academia-nerd-appeal that really drags me in, I’m afraid.  Not enough obscure historicism and arguments hinging on understanding of medieval economic structures.
