'Magic Mike's Last Dance' Movie and Blu-ray Review
The following review was written by Ultimate Rabbit correspondent, Tony Farinella. I thought the first two “Magic Mike” films served two different purposes, but they were entertaining and fun in different ways.  The first “Magic Mike,” directed by Steven Soderbergh, was more artistic and character driven.  It was a good film with great performances and cinematography. In “Magic Mike XXL,” we got…

Magic Mike's Last Dance https://bit.ly/3LOsL15 And so the franchise built around Channing Tatum’s early career as a male stripper comes to an end, with one bang and, doubtless, several whimpers. Magic Mike’s Last Dance sees Steven Soderbergh return as director, director of photography and editor, writing credit goes again to Reid Carolin and Tatum makes it three in a row as he dry-humps a role that’s been good to him. The “bang” refers to Salma Hayek’s character, the immensely rich Maxandra Mendoza, who hooks up with down-on-his-luck Mike Lane (Tatum) early on, then whisks him away to the UK after he demonstrates his Magic in a raunchy private routine that leads to the “happy finish” Mendoza expressly said … Read more

Magic Mike's Last Dance (2023)
Ten years ago, my friend Alicia and I walked into the Cinemark at Citiplace in Baton Rouge with a lot of excited middle-aged women to see Magic Mike, the then-new film directed by beloved (by us anyway) BR film icon Steven Soderbergh. Magic Mike had largely been marketed as an upbeat romcom about a hot dude raising money to start his own business by working as a male stripper. In the trailer,…

Magic Mike's Last Dance
[3 stars]
Channing Tatum (The Lost City) built his life on the sweaty back of his dancing starting with Step Up and, eventually, the Magic Mike, semi-autobiographical franchise. And the man can move. This latest addition (also by previous Mike movie writer, Reid Carolin) combines aspects of both series to move away from the grittier reality-style of the earlier Mike films to deliver a more glossy semi-reality, Pretty Woman style rom-com with Tatum at the center. Even the dancing, while explosive and really engaging, has a lot less flesh than the previous installments, though with plenty of sensuality.
Salma Hayek Pinault (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) is Mike’s latest partner for this romp. She delivers an uber-rich, dissatisfied, and confused patron with sympathy and just enough pathos to make it work. And Jemelia George as her daughter provides the sounding board for the whole story. As her first feature, George holds her own on screen against the veterans. Mind you, the framing is a little forced, but it does help shift the tone of the film and set it apart from the others as well.
Add to that all the dance, jokes, and virtual pas de deux, along with some nice smaller roles from Ayub Khan Din and Vicki Pepperdine, and you have a winning movie that provides a good escape. A believable one? Not really. But you don’t really care about that part in the end; the ride is what it’s all about. Which is good as the final moments sort of peter out. That was surprising given the control with which Steven Soderbergh (KIMI) had crafted and directed the rest of the movie.
Whether you come to this for the romance, the dance, or the modest amounts of skin, there is a bit of everything for its audience. Brilliant? Again, no…but none of the series was. But, like the others, it manages some nice surprises and takes itself just seriously enough to come across as honest and earnest.

Magic Mike's Last Dance
Release Date: February 10, 2023 | Theaters
SYNOPSIS:
Mike Lane takes to the stage once again when a business deal that went bust leaves him broke and bartending in Florida. Hoping for one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse and an agenda all of her own. With everything on the line, he soon finds himself trying to whip a hot new roster of talented dancers into shape.
REVIEW:
Without the core group of guys who danced with Mike in the past two films, this slim-plotted threequel is just an excuse to watch Hayek and Tatum flirt (and lots of sexy dances, of course). In the absence of the guys, Mike has a bunch of hired professional and street dancers, but it’s difficult to recall even one of their names, not to mention anything about their private lives. The dancers don’t have backstories like the Xquisite crew, because this script focuses solely on the relationship between Mike and Max. But as entertaining as it is to watch Tatum and Hayek dirty dance and fall in love, this one is even flimsier than XXL, and the series is definitely ready for its final bow.
CAST: Channing Tatum, Salma Hayek Pinault, Ayub Khan Din, Jemelia George, Juliette Motamed, Vicki Pepperdine, Gavin Spokes, Alan Cox, Caitlin Gerard, Christopher Bencomo
