It's been four years since we first adopted Jemima.

In that time, she's gone from being a young mother whose kittens were all adopted and she was left behind to being a pampered housecat who sleeps all day 😻

Jemmy gets irritated by her little brother Ash that we adopted earlier this year, but he does like cleaning her fur and napping near her (and sometimes she lets him!)

Anyway, here's a 1985 parody song I wrote last year for Jem—enjoy, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼

I found the Jem and the Holograms doll at Walmart! She's about $25! I was so excited to find her, as my mom introduced me to this show as a child.

(I have my reproduction barbie wearing the Jerrica outfit she comes with! Though the sash on that is something I added to make her more biblically accurate lol)

Jem is Jerrica's drag persona and she uses light constructs as makeup and couture.

The songs, makeup, costume changes and nonsensical teen drama / history plot (holes) and more glitter and pink than a collision between a Kylie's and a Nicki's show, gave joy, laughter (and even visibility, representation) and also dreams of slay on a stage to so many kids.

I love Jem songs and some lyrics made sense for Sams. Because my writing is hard to read, I'll separate each song to write the lyrics.

Song: Deception. Lyric: My life seems like it's nothing but deception

Also drew Eclipse in Pizzazz's outfit since The Misfits song fit him. Also, they literally had a song that started with this lyric: it's a total eclipse, the moon's overtaking the sun(2nd outfit was in that song. Song is Univeral Appeal)

jem is seriously such a fun cartoon!

YES! I was in my 20s in college when I first heard of it, lol. my bus buddy, whose name was ed, told me about it. I watched it shortly after, and the rest is history. 😊

what's not to love? its got catchy 80s bangers played by a pastel pink haired front woman who is a hologram who turns out to be an alter ego of a girl by the touch of an earring.

to paint a picture, it's like if hannah montana, julie and the phantoms and a barbie all had a baby in an animated series 😆 it's truly outrageous! even for the 80's. the combination of drama with a rivalry, jerrica's secret identity, evil banger playing rivals the misfits who commit multiple felonies with little consequence on the regular ie: kidnapping, vehicular manslaughter, arson and more, heartwarming orphans, evil record exec, a love triangle, glamor, glitter, fashion and fame all wrapped in a pretty pastel package. all in all, it's got something for everyone. jem was created just to sell some off brand barbie dolls during a saturday morning cartoon time slot. genius.

if i ask most women in their late 30s or 40s who grew up in the mid 80s about jem, not only do they know jem, they get all nostalgic and legit happy at the mention. example, a colleague at work had the dolls. my boyfriends older sister dressed as jem for halloween. a college classmate who was my age, and i bonded over jem. this show had girls in the 80s dreaming and thriving. evidently, with streaming, it's accessible. i believe it's free on youtube its now on tubi.

honestly, jem isn't just for girls or children. let’s be real. cartoons aren't just for kids. usually, look to disney, shows like simpsons, fururama, and family guy for comparison, some of these are clearly nit for kids. disney primarily has jokes that go over kids' heads, but can get mom and dad to crack a smile or bust out laughing. same reason parents and kids like bluey.

we don't discuss jem and the holograms (2015) not the same, not even close. looking at a fella by the name of scooter braun, (guy isn't liked by swifties either, might I add if you know you know.) who consulted fans of the og and made it a dumpster fire by not taking any of the suggestions and ideas he asked us for. i don’t even think he took some the suggestions from the creator of jem, he simply thought he knew it all that's the impression i get. to top off he took it out of the 80s and made it gimmicky, wannabe teenybopper shit. it was off. i didn't get that far.

FUN FACT: jem and the holograms (2015) received a 22% on rotten tomatoes.

I didn’t exactly expect a movie like that or one that was more true to jem from 80s to be perfect or win an Oscar by any means, but they could have made it a bit like tongue and cheek, like similar to og jem, or even deep at times like barbie (2023). We likely won't get a redemption or a new one, but it was a shame the reboot didn't do it justice. The girls of the 80s deserved a live action of their childhood favorite! I mean, look at transformers (2007) for the boys. Why can't we have nice things?

How did I discover Jem! Oh gosh, I discovered Jem because of Robot Chicken lol. I was in high school, and Robot Chicken made this sketch that was kind of like “where are they now,” but with 80s cartoon characters/dolls, and Jem was a fat chainsmoker doing kids’ birthday parties. There was this other gag about Jem in a different Robot Chicken episode too, asking if she was “truly, TRULY outrageous??” and she was peeing at a urinal...? (I still don’t get it)

From there, I looked up Jem on YouTube and just kinda fell into it because I love 80s things and cartotons sdlfjklgjh. I watched the first 5 episodes in parts on YT, and I found TheMitigating and made friends with him (he even sent me my Jem T-shirt, but I had him mail to my mom’s work because I didn’t want to give my address out to a stranger online lol) and we just fanned about the show. I made a Tumblr for the first time around then, which is why my main URL is JemstarEarrings (then it was JemstarStrawberries,) but that’s pretty much it!

TWELVE | Meaning Behind Your URL: Oh boy, here we go.

Okay, so I had a previous account called “trulyoutrageous101” (somewhere along the lines) and it was in reference to my name “Jem” because there was a show called “Jem” and the theme song went like “JEM, SHE’S TRULY OUTRAGEOUS.” I thought it was ingenious, but as I was looking through that blog I didn’t like the theme at all. It was not really my style and it was filled with “qUiRkY” stuff that typical young teenage girls reblogged. Not only that, the dashboard was filled with that and controversial stuff regarding feminism. I didn’t like it, so I deleted the blog and started up a new one that had the themes of horror, grunge, and goth (even though I wouldn’t call myself goth, I do appreciate and love the culture).

I wasn’t sure what name I wanted to go with, and I had no idea what I could use to associate all those three. Then it came to me to just use the word “Death” because it seemed to me that’s what they all connected to. So I did, and was gonna go with “DeathIsMe.” The issue was someone had already taken that username, so as a joke I went with “DeathIsNotMe.” I didn’t realize later that it had some significance to me, due to some events that has happened in my past.

So yeah, that’s the story behind my URL 💀.
