Beach House - an ethereal experience
It was a warm, November night in Charlottesville, Virginia (weird). Teens and adults alike lined up outside of The Jefferson, awaiting the concert of their dreams. The doors opened and, one by one, the theater swallowed buzzing Beach House fans. After passing through security, we approached the floor and immediately contemplated the important questions: where can we best appreciate the light display? Where can we avoid tall people? We settled for the center of the pit. Silhouettes started to move across the stage, and we hooted n’ hollered in anticipation—just a person with a flashlight, scouting the area for any last-minute things that needed touching up. “Maybe they’re looking for Beach House,” I heard someone joke. I like this crowd. After an hour of waiting, the band made their appearance on stage and we all went wild. Low-key lighting combined with fog created an alluring, ominous atmosphere. Three translucent, rectangular structures hung from a wire. At some point during the concert, it hit me: these things totally resemble the “monolith” in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey! Indeed, the experience was ethereal. Boundaries between the material and the immaterial were challenged that night. The band opened with “Levitation”, a song off of their album Depression Cherry, which was perfect since the kick-drum comes in after a whole 2 or so minutes into the song. I found myself mesmerized by the drummer (no surprise there). And when he disappeared for a few songs, I felt kinda disoriented. Then, a moment so palpable, so spell-binding—bright lights flickered in harmony with the beat of the kick while the crash directed Victoria Legrand’s angelic exorcism. At least one person blacked out (don’t worry - she came to, then proceeded to describe the event as the best concert of her life). When the purge was finally over—well, I can’t remember. After performing the last song of the set, Victoria uttered a quick “thank you,” and the band members took their leave. The relentless crowd’s encore explosion must have lasted at least 2 solid minutes. Then, the fairy herself reappeared, bowing before us, her palms pressed together. Her bandmates emerged a moment later, and the encore song was performed. Headed toward the exit, we once again walked through the softly-lit, high-ceilinged hallway of The Jefferson—but it felt different this time. “I feel like I’m in Hogwarts,” I thought aloud. Of all the songs on the setlist (which can be found here: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/beach-house/2016/the-jefferson-theater-charlottesville-va-43fae3bb.html), my favorites were “PPP” and “Elegy to the Void” – but “Space Song” and “Myth” conjured the most nostalgia, flooding my mind with memories of my ex.

Way Out In The Water
There are certain songs that just feel like they have always existed- like I can barely remember a time when they weren't on my favorite playlists, even though I know for a fact that I haven't always known them.
I remember seeing Fight Club at the Jefferson Theater, back when the venue actually was a movie theater. I had several friends that worked there who would give me the hook-up (holla if ya hear me) and let me in to watch movies for free. I know that I'm breaking both the first and second rules of Fight Club by even mentioning this fact, but it feels important to the reflective journey’s narrative.
Those friends also worked with me at Plan 9 Music, our local record store where I had just that week picked up my first Pixies album. While Pixies’ influence on all of the bands I liked were well-documented, I had never partaken in their music- at least until that week, when Surfer Rosa made its way to my used CD hold shelf. #OhMyGolly #OhMyGolly
Fast forward later that week, and I’m watching Fight Club when (#spoileralert) Marla and a guy who I'll call Jacks unified sense of mind and body are standing hand in hand, watching with elation as the skyscrapers of the financial district come crashing down. With this song I can barely place blaring in the background.
It was The Pixies’ Where Is My Mind? (And no, that wasn’t a question. The question mark is part of the song title.)
That song quickly became part of my regular open mic circuit set from that day forward- to which I tied an intro of Carly Simon’s Nobody Does It Better that was more than highly influenced by a cover I once heard by Radiohead. Since the chord progressions mirrored each other, it felt like a good fit. (In the same vein, it would usually be followed by a cover of Say It Ain’t So for the same reason.)
As a member of a band 10 years later, this song became one of our favorites to play together. We first tried to do it my way, and later worked to make it ours, as drummer and former student Aaron “Gabe” Slagle added a Flaming Lips-inspired snare flare that kept the energy just so. It was a blast to play it with the guys. During one of our shows, we reprised the looping ending ad infinitum, just because. We. Could. Not. #woooooooooStop.
More recently, that song has seemingly entered the zeitgeist. I've heard versions on countless media outlets of late (Mr Robot and The Leftovers come to mind), along with commercials for cars and mobile phones. It's everywhere, almost to the point of being hackneyed. But never to me.
It feels like a song closely tied to identity- to the breakthrough between what once was and what now will be. Maybe it's the nonsense lyrics that allow listeners to draw their own interpretations, or maybe it's the prototypical loud-soft-loud approach of the music under the words that brings this tension to bear.
Either way, it's a coming-of-age song, one that I've always thought that I’ve known and yet now can specifically pinpoint where and when I first heard it.
