Brazil court drops a suspect in Amazon slayings of a British journalist and an Indigenous advocate

A federal court in Brazil dismissed charges Tuesday against one of three men arrested for the killings of Indigenous peoples expert Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips in the Amazon, ruling there wasn’t enough evidence to try him.

Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, a poor fisherman who lived by the Itaquai River, was arrested on June 14, 2022, nine days after the slayings.

Also arrested were his brother, Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, and Jefferson da Silva Lima, who confessed to the killings but claimed self-defense. The Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region upheld a lower court decision that they will now face a jury trial.

With the ruling, Oseney Oliveira, a father of four, will be released following 27 months in prison, most in a federal penitentiary thousands of miles from Atalaia do Norte, his hometown in Brazil’s Amazon, where the killings occurred.

Há pouco mais de 75 anos, em 1947, Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002), biólogo, geógrafo, antropólogo, arqueólogo, explorador e escritor norueguês, junto de cinco conterrâneos (Knut Haugland, Bengt Emmerik Danielssen, Erik Hesselberg, Torstein Raaby e Herman Watzinger), realizava o feito de percorrer 8 mil quilômetros de Oceano Pacífico a bordo da “Kon-Tiki” (nome do herói mítico polinésio da solitária Ilha de Fatuhiva, pertencente ao grupo das Ilhas Marquesas, que segundo a tradição oral teria trazido os antepassados ​​dos ilhéus desde o leste), réplica de uma jangada primitiva de pau-de-balsa que construiu com materiais e técnicas pré-colombianas, demonstrando que os mares não se constituíam em barreiras intransponíveis, como se pensa6va, mas antes em autênticas “vias expressas” a interligar povos e continentes.

Brazil: Bruno and Dom case defendant granted house arrest

Fisherman Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, one of the three people detained in connection with the 2022 murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist activist Bruno Pereira, was granted house arrest Friday by case rapporteur Justice Marcos Augusto de Sousa of Brasilia's Federal First Region Regional Court (TRF1), Agencia Brasil reported.

The measure had been requested by the legal team assisting the suspect citing health problems such as the need for a colonoscopy to treat heavy bleeding in the rectal area.
