[Video Description/transcript: Over a blurred background is a cutout image of Joe Thornton holding a sign reading "Describe Jumbo." The image disappears and the background unblurs to reveal the Chelsea Piers East Rink as members of the Sharks organization walk past and others practice on the ice. As they walk past, people look down then speak to the videographer, implying there's a sign with a prompt.
Nico Sturm: He's got a nice beard. Fabian Zetterlund: Goat. Beard. Legend. Jeff Ulmer: Beard. Ty Dellandrea, following after Ulmer: Sniper. Loud. Macklin Celebrini: Life of the Party. Mikael Granlund: Really good hockey player. Jack Thompson, following Granlund: Exciting. Fun. Thomas Speer, with someone saying "Say beauty" in the background: Beauty. Henry Thrun: Funny. Ryan Warsofsky: Comedian. Vitek Vanecek, getting close up to the camera: Best guy. Mario Ferraro: Makes a high pitched "aaah" sound as he walks by Alex Wennberg, smiling: Oh, beauty. That's a great one. Jan Rutta: Very nice and funny human being. Tyler Toffoli: Animal. Jake Walman: Awesome guy. Barclay Goodrow: Bearded legend. Timothy Liljegren: Jumbo's the most positive guy I've ever met. Never have a bad day. Mackenzie Blackwood (next to Kunin with the camera focused on Luke Kunin then moving to him): Big beard. He's a fun guy. Luke Kunin (at first copying Blackwood then adding on): He's a fun guy, oh! Legend. Mario Ferraro, again: Repeats the same high pitched sound as previous. Cody Ceci: Unbelievable career. Great player. Givani Smith: Oh, just a great person. Brian Wiseman: Huge personality, infectious energy, and a legend. William Eklund: The. Goat. That's two words. Klim Kostin: Real gangster. Will Smith: Um. Fun and energetic. Dan Rusanowsky: Joe Thornton is one of the greatest people I've ever met in the game of hockey. A kind man, a real team player, and one of the greatest championship type personalities I've ever known. Carl Grundstrom: Great.
The starting image of Joe Thornton reappears, this time filling the entire screen, and the video ends.]

Some notes: So at the end of July I was off film and off tumblr and not sure if I'd be back but I guess now I am, to some extent at least. The very start of this list is a bit innacurate. I probably watched a few more films than I've listed and maybe in a different order but from Gothic onwards it's correct - not that it really matters! I really must try to get back into having a themed Halloween watch list, which I haven't done since the japanese one in 2019, it's more fun. Am I doing Noirvember? I don't know.

While testing the latest and greatest airship just above the atmosphere, Major William Allison (Robert Clarke) accidentally travels to the apocalyptic future of… 2024! Little did they know. Beyond the Time Barrier (1960) is a low-budget, sci-fi B-picture from director Edgar G. Ulmer (The Black Cat, 1934; Detour, 1945) and writer Arthur C. Pierce (The Cosmic Man, 1959; The Human Duplicators, 1965). To Chad’s dismay, the plot includes a lot of walking and talking across a set filled with inverted pyramids. Oh, and the mutants… sigh. Check out what the Grue Crew has to say about this B&W, time-travel trainwreck. Also, stick around for the usual batch of feedback from past episodes.
You might also want to check out these Decades of Horror: The Classic Era episodes:
THE HIDEOUS SUN DEMON (1958) – Episode 41: w/Robert Clarke as writer, director, producer, and star
THE BLACK CAT (1934) – Episode 67: directed by Edgar G. Ulmer, starring Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff
At the time of this writing, Beyond the Time Barrier is available for streaming from the Classic Sci-Fi Movie Channel, Amazon Prime, and Tubi. The film is available on physical media as a Blu-ray from Kino Lorber in the Edgar G. Ulmer Sci-Fi Collection, a trio of films that also includes The Man from Planet X (1951) and The Amazing Transparent Man (1960).
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by guest host Michael Zatz, is The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), another silent scream starring Lon Chaney! Sanctuary! Sanctuary! Incidentally, this will be the Classic Era’s tenth discussion of a silent film.
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel, the site, or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]
To each of you from each of them, “Thank you so much for watching and listening!”

“I always describe myself as a frustrated bebop guitar player. That’s kind of where my heart is. One day I’ll make a bebop record, I think,” Jeff Parker says. This comment might come as a surprise to anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the guitarist’s vast output, especially his work as a longtime member of the genre-melding experimental-rock group Tortoise.
Reared on his dad’s Art Blakey and Lee Morgan albums, Parker likes hearing jazz cross-pollinated with other musical styles. A Tribe Called Quest’s landmark 1991 album, The Low End Theory, with guest Ron Carter, was a particular revelation. “It let me know that the music could [exist] in a different context,” he says. “I like jazz too, but I liked when you could hear it expanding. That’s kind of what led me into experimental music.” Last year, Parker released his own vision of such a hybrid with The New Breed (International Anthem).
Although Parker, 50, has called Los Angeles home since 2013, he maintains strong connections to Chicago, where he had lived since the early ’90s. In addition to Tortoise, he played with a wealth of the city’s creative musicians, including saxophonist Ernest Dawkins and various projects led by cornetist Rob Mazurek (Exploding Star Orchestra, Isotope 217). He’s been an associate member of the AACM since 1995.
This Before & After session took place in March, after Tortoise’s sound check at Mr. Smalls, a venue in the borough of Millvale, Pa., just outside Pittsburgh’s city limits.
Tired after an early morning flight from Mexico City, Parker nevertheless delivered thoughtful opinions, listening intently to everything from straight swing to psychedelic deconstructions of the masters. [Read More]

21st-Century Horror: Weird Fiction at the Turn of the Millennium, by S.T. Joshi, Sarnath Press, 2018. Info: stjoshi.org.
The literature of terror and the supernatural has been experiencing a renaissance over the past several decades, and with the advent of the new millennium a diverse cadre of writers have expanded the bounds of weird fiction and enriched it with their penetrating vision. This book is the first to present a broad analysis of horror fiction as written by writers in their forties and fifties. S.T. Joshi, one of the leading authorities on weird fiction, brings divides his book into three categories, based on his judgment of the varying merits of the authors in question. Among the 'Elite' are such writers as Michael Aronovitz, a master of metafictional narratives that intensely treat the emotional traumas of his characters; Adam Nevill, author of expansive novels that use the classic work of M.R. James, Arthur Machen, and others as a springboard; and Jonathan Thomas, who has found in the work of H.P. Lovecraft a touchstone for his cynical view of human foibles. Among the 'Worthies' are the grimly pessimistic writer Nicole Cushing; Reggie Oliver, who has revivified the ghost story; and Clint Smith, whose tales are distinguished by his lyrical prose. Controversially, Joshi has established a category of 'Pretenders'—authors whose work, in his opinion, is not commensurate with their reputations. Here we find Laird Barron, whose distinguished early writing is now confounded by mediocrity and preciosity; Joe Hill, author of bloated potboilers all too reminiscent of the unimaginative work of his father, Stephen King; Brian Keene, the prototypical hack writer; and Jeff VanderMeer, author of a trilogy whose confused premises and tiresome length try the patience of the most indulgent reader. Whatever one may think of Joshi’s views, his writing remains lively, provocative, and sure to promote discussion.

Up next in their very flexible schedule, as chosen by Doc, is The Lost Continent (1968), the Hammer film that features blood beasts, torture pits, giant jaw-snapping mollusks, a floating death ship, crazed kelp monsters, and fiery destruction … at least, according to the poster. A couple of familiar faces will join the Classic Era Grue Crew: Bill Mulligan (Decades of Horror 1970s and 1980s) and Richard Klemensen, the publisher of The Little Shoppe of Horrors: The Journal of Classic British Horror Films and the voice you hear on the commentary for the Scream Factory Blu-ray of The Lost Continent.

Justice Dept. Restricts a Common Tactic of Immigration Judges New York Times ^ | May 17, 2018 | Katie Benner
Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a directive on Thursday that places limits on a tool commonly used by immigration judges and could put hundreds of thousands of deportation cases that are essentially closed back on federal court dockets.
The move, issued in an interim decision, is unlikely to reopen all the cases. But Mr. Sessions said that immigration courts could not put such cases on indefinite hold by using a practice known as administrative closure, which temporarily removes a case from a judge’s calendar and delays a proceeding that could remove an immigrant from the country.
Immigration judges “do not have the general authority to suspend indefinitely immigration proceedings by administrative closure,” he wrote in the decision, and the practice “effectively resulted in illegal aliens remaining indefinitely in the United States without any formal legal status.”
The move injects fresh uncertainty into the lives of undocumented immigrants living in the United States, and some critics say the decision could lead to their deportation before they could gain legal status.
“Sessions is using his authority as attorney general to turn the immigration courts into a deportation assembly line, with ICE officers waiting at the exits with open handcuffs in hand,” said David W. Leopold, who oversees the immigration law group at Ulmer & Berne, referring to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mr. Sessions, an immigration hard-liner, said that the directive paved the way for such court cases that had been “put ‘out of sight, out of mind’” to return to dockets in courts across the country. From October 2011 to last September, 215,285 cases were administratively closed.
