RIP JEF CAMPION - THE ARMY OF ONE
Jef Campion – The Army of One - passed beyond the stars late in January. He was a New Yorker, a firefighter, an anti-war activist and street artist, who also volunteered his time at The Ronald McDonald House – a charity for ill children.
I stumbled on his street art in the wide blue nowhere of social media.  His distinctive Red Right Hand print on his adaption of a photograph by Diane Arbus  - “Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park, New York City (1962)” was immediately noticeable.
Campion’s  distinctive wheat pastes conveyed strong anti-war and pro-children’s rights messages. The Child with Toy Grenade with slogans like “Give Peace a Chance”, “Chalk before Bullets” and “Camouflage Doesn’t Hide Everything” was reproduced numerous times in many sizes and mediums.
It was a protest and a warning that war is not child’s play and also that children are the innocent victims of bloody conflicts all over the world.
 I contacted him asking for some wheat pastes to stick up in Jozi – he mailed me a large paste and a number of stickers with this message;
“We are pleased with the gods for sending you our way.......we have not had a legion in South Africa as of yet.....you are our Minister of Propaganda in Johannesburg.......VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!!!!!!!”
I struck up some of the stickers up around Jozi but they promptly disappeared shortly after – either scarfed by collectors or vandalised. Luckily I kept the paste which I had framed and it now  hangs in my office as an everyday reminder to Give Peace a Chance.
Jef Campion’s life was irrevocably changed by the events of 9/11 - He spent about 40 consecutive days at Ground Zero after the Sept attack, which apparently took a heavy toll on his mental and physical well-being.
He was a crusader for peace and an advocate for kids’ safety. A comment on one the many sites reporting his passing put it much better than I ever could -
“Jef was a great human being. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he was all about giving back to the world he lived in. He always talked about charity and the rights of children who were victims of war & sickness. He was very involved with The Ronald McDonald house and he was also a damn good artist whose emotions would penetrate any medium he put that beautiful shiny red paint on. Rest In Peace Army of One - you now have an army of thousands who will carry the torch of compassion for those who are too young to have a voice”

Jef Campion, Part One: An Army Of One  Jef Campion is a fire fighter by day and a street artist by night - army of one/jc2.- It is impossible to walk the streets of Los Angeles or New York City without coming across the polarizing image known as "Grenade Boy".
Jef's reinterpretation of this Diane Arbus classic was born out of the rage unlocked after the tragic events of September 11th triggered suppressed memories of childhood neglect.
