Now I said what I said.
Midoriya Izuku aka Deku has RANGE. He's pretty, he's cute, he's handsome, he's picturesque. He can display his emotions and look different every single time. He has looked like a whole ray of sunshine and then a damn demon ready to take kneecaps from his foes. His freckles, curly hair and big green eyes are weapons. He is as fluid as his damn zodiac element, water.
Just saying, that should be appreciated more.

Hello!! I hope you're doing well💕 Idk if this been requested before, headcanons about them having a stylish, fashionable s.o? You can choose the characters, tysm!!💖 For BNHA, if possible, please <3
fashionable s/o
character(s) : shinsou hitoshi, bakugou katsuki, todoroki shouto, midoriya izuku (bnha)
legend : [Y/N = your name] they/them pronouns used, quirk not mentioned
headcanon type : fluff (x reader)
note(s) : this isn’t that long, compared to most of my headcanons, but i did add four characters! will post more later
»»————- ♡ ————-««
shinsou hitoshi
feels like a trashcan next to you.
in reality, his fashion sense is either top tier stuff, or something you can find at dollar tree
and when i mean that, i mean black sweatpants (that haven’t been washed in 2 days) and a black sweater, with a coffee stain on it to match
his fashion sense is quite lazy and comfortable, but that one outfit he wears on special occasions make up for it.
he smiles when he notices how you never-ever wear the same outfit twice in a row. at some point— assumed that you were also loaded.
and how you always find a way to make an ‘ugly’ outfit suddenly not ugly— he doesn’t know how you exactly do it.
hitoshi could look at an outfit in your closet and think “WHY did they buy this again?” but then in the following second, he could go
“oh, that’s why. they always know how to make it work.” since then, he has learned how to trust your sense in fashion
you could probably help him with his fashion sense, and he wouldn’t mind at all— just help him be consistent with it.
sometimes, he didn’t even know that a certain article of clothing would actually look good on him. the more you know
doesn’t mind it when people gawk at you, because of your very boujee✨sense of style. because, who wouldn’t look at you? they’d be missing out.
in short— he adores how you put so much effort with your clothes, and how you’re also effortlessly stylish
“but i’m dressed like a trashcan next to you,,” he’ll say with a hand resting on his nape, and you’ll reply with
“hitoshi, stop saying that.”
bakugou katsuki
appalled when he shows up to your dorm— and sees you wearing the fanciest pair of pajamas he has ever seen in his entire life.
“what the heck??”
“why, katsuki??”
“WHAT’S WITH THOSE FANCY PAJAMAS??”
his fashion sense is fine,, i mean— his parents are canonically fashion designers. so, you’d expect him to carry their sense of style
yes AND no. have y’all seen the official art of him carrying that large suit case? the fit was lowkey horrendous
rolls his eyes when he sees you wear something stylish to the grocery store— when he’s wearing a black tanktop and some sweatpants.
“seriously— is the outfit really necessary? you stand out too much.”
“is that a good thing?”
not for me.”
okay but,, it’s not that bad as he says it is. he secretly loves seeing you pull up to dates in those nice clothes. he hasn’t seen you reuse the same outfit two times in a row.
but omg he hates having people gawk at you in public because of your clothes. that’s the part he despises the most
“this is what i didn’t like about your stupid style”
“oh? jealous, are we?”
“shut your trap.”
yes, you’re in fact— attractive. BUT THEY GOTTA KEEP THEIR EYES TO THEMSELVES
katsuki actually loves this part on you— but he grows irritated when his parents suddenly asked him if you were interested in modeling 💀
‘screw you and your fancy pants’ he’ll think to himself, when his parents are fawning over your sense of style.
todoroki shouto
shouto is also a fashion icon himself— so you two get a lot of attention for just,, looking fancy as heck, even in the mundane.
he didn’t really care about what you wore. you had the fashion sense of a white crusty family dog? well,, so what? he doesn’t care as long as you’re comfortable.
shouto noticed how you managed to make a plain piece of fabric a fashion statement— and wanted you to show him your closet
so when you do, he’s fascinated. your brain must be LARGE just thinking about what outfit combination you want to wear every single free day.
but he also thought you were like,, the emma chamberlain of fashion— he thought you created every single fashion trend out there today
when in reality, you just happened to know how to put your own touch on an outfit 💀
“what do you mean you didn’t bring back the brown pants trend?”
“shouto, for the last time— i didn’t do that,,”
he’s not convinced yet.
loves it when he walks into your room, and sees you mumbling to yourself on what you want to wear for a specific day— especially when you’re just wearing a sweater of his, instead of your own
even though you probably have 50 sweaters in there 💀
you need to fix your outfit in public? well, that’s not an issue! he’ll literally do it for you, with no hesitation.
fixes your collar when it gets caught in your bag’s strap, and also makes sure he doesn’t pull anything too tightly.
eventually buys you clothes, when he manages to map out your aesthetic, and what you like— even though anything looks good on you in his opinion
the class can only gawk at the two of you, when the class takes another shopping trip at the mall. i mean,, you both stick out!
“jeez. we look like goodwill mannequins next to them”
midoriya izuku
“that nerd’s fashion sense is lackluster at best.” — bakugou katsuki
i mean,, his fashion sense is simple. he never considered dressing in anything flashy— at least until he started dating you
he dressed in simple, and sometimes corny shirts— when you’re dressed in something he’d see in a luxurious clothing store.
he feels so,, out of place standing next to you. which you reassure that he doesn’t! but he can’t help but think that sometimes,,
because of that, he would be very willing if you decided to give him a clothing makeover!
he gets confused sometimes when he sees your closet like,, “i wonder what would this be paired with,,” but he knows to trust you with that
he’s just,, curious. that’s all.
has this fact written in his notebook— it has nothing to do with your quirk or anything related to that, but he does find it interesting
“Y/N wears a new outfit every weekend. i’ve never seen them wear the same outfit twice in a row! i wonder how that’s possible. i’ve seen their closet! and there’s a lot of things in there, and i just..” blah blah blah— when you came across that page, you were so flattered.
at first, he gets really sheepish when he’s standing next to you in public— because of the stares. but he learns to get used to it
“look, sweetheart! your style is nothing short of anything stylish.” he basically feeds you compliments on the daily— but who wouldn’t??
gets so happy when he sees you wear the clothes he bought you— even if he wasn’t so sure if someone as fashionable as you would wear it,,
to him, it’s overwhelming at first— but he does love how you look! he could talk about you all day and night. even if it annoys some people

Kintsukuroi
Just to preface this, I’ve never posted my writing to Tumblr before so if anyone has any pro tips, please hit me up! Enjoy ;)
Chapter 1
“Jeez, you guys, again?” Tsutsumi Aiko chided with a smirk, stepping through one of her own portals. “The best heroes this world has ever seen yet you two somehow always end up trapped and then I gotta come rescue you.” Her wormhole closed the moment she was through it. “If I’m always out here rescuing the number 1 and the number 2, then shouldn’t I be number 1?” She queried, raising an eyebrow at the two young heroes sitting back to back, quirk cuffs cutting into their wrists. They were blindfolded and bound to each other at their torsos with rope and their hands and feet were tied together rendering them immobile.
Todoroki Shouto was the first to respond, sighing heavily, gesturing with his head at Midoriya Izuku behind him. “This guy.”
Izuku rolled his eyes, though it was missed by Shouto given their current state of imprisonment. “Nobody forced you to follow me.” Both of them laughed a little at that, everyone knew Shouto would never let Izuku go into a dangerous situation alone if he had a choice in the matter.
They froze at the sound of footsteps and Aiko’s head shot up. “Shit, someone’s coming!” She whispered. “We have to go, NOW.” She knelt next to them on the floor, looping her right arm through their bindings.
“Hey!” The husky male voice came from the doorway. The light that shown from behind was almost blinding and it was impossible to see any of the features or distinguishing marks on the person standing in it, just the outline of a body that didn’t look particularly imposing, but she had no idea what this person might be capable of. “What do you think you’re doing with my prisoners?” The voice sounded exasperated by the intruder who appeared in the makeshift jail cell.
Aiko smiled at the darkened figure in the doorway, “What prisoners?” She asked as her left hand splayed out on the floor and a portal opened below her and her two friends and they fell through, hitting the ground within a few seconds with a thud.
Shouto groaned in pain. He had landed face first from who knows what height, because he was still blindfolded and still tied to Izuku, with all Izuku’s hulking muscle landing right on top of him. He tasted dirt. He could barely breathe under Izuku’s dead weight.
“Izu..” He choked out, just barely. He could feel Aiko tugging on the rope tying them together. “Tsut…Tsutsumi…” He managed.
“Oh!” She yelped and rolled them over so they were laying side by side and Shouto gasped for air as soon as the pressure was alleviated from his lungs. “Sorry.” She gritted her teeth.
“It’s all right.” He panted, Izuku had said nothing nor had he moved and Shouto determined he must be unconscious. “There’s a utility knife on Izuku’s belt in the front.” He offered and Aiko stopped tugging for a moment. When she resumed, he could feel ropes being cut away one by one. Once she was able to separate them, she removed Shouto’s blindfold.
They were in the grass, tall trees began a few meters in front of Shouto and the forest extended beyond his field of vision. He sat still as Aiko was still cutting away the rope at his feet, and there was still the issue of the quirk cuffs. They could only be removed with a special device and he silently hoped she had thought to bring one. His feet were finally freed and he moved to stand, his body stiff from sitting on the cold hard floor of the cell they had previously been stuck in as well as sore from falling to the earth only to cushion Izuku’s own fall. Once standing, he stretched a little and then turned to take in the rest of their surroundings. Aiko was already busy cutting an unconscious Izuku free. His first reaction was to check Izuku for injury, but he was interrupted before he could kneel in front of the number 1 hero by the sight of someone several meters away staring at them as though she was looking at a ghost. When he caught her eye, she started toward them tentatively.
“A-are you guys ok?” She was American, he recognized almost immediately. She was clearly of some sort of western European decent but her accent was clearly American.
<Where are we?> Shouto asked in Japanese to no one in particular.
“Oh, you don’t speak English.” She said a little dejectedly, looking rather confused as to how to communicate with them.
“We speak English.” Aiko offered. “And yeah, we’re ok. Well, we think he is.” She stated gesturing at lump on the ground that was Izuku, newly liberated from the ropes.
The American girl looked at Aiko wide eyed, the way she was looking when Shouto noticed her. “Where the hell did you come from? I literally just watched you drop out of a hole in the sky.” Her eyes narrowed conspiratorially, “Are you guys aliens?”
Aiko had just closed the pocket utility knife she’d borrowed from Izuku’s belt and she let out a hearty laugh. One corner of Shouto's mouth even raised in a slight smirk.
“No! We came from Tokyo!” Aiko explained, catching her breath. “Aliens.” She muttered before erupting with laughter once again. The girl looked down, seeming even more confused than before, almost as if she would have preferred to accept that they came from outer space than another country on her own planet.
<Tsutsumi.> Shouto demanded and displayed his wrists behind his back still in the cuffs. <Do you have the device?> He asked, still speaking Japanese.
“Oh! Yes.” She pulled the quirk cuff removal device from her back pocket and stepped behind Shouto, he heard the click and then the cuffs fell away from his hands. Aiko threw them in the grass and Shouto knelt next to Izuku, checking him for serious injury and the strength of his pulse. He seemed fine enough, he must have been knocked out during the fall, though if anyone should have been rendered unconscious by that, it should have been Shouto. He sighed in relief and absently put his fingers through Izuku’s curls.
“They’re not in love.” Aiko said suddenly and he looked up at her, realizing she was speaking to the American girl next to her as they both gazed at the two men. He ignored her and looked back at Izuku’s peaceful face. “At least, that’s what they keep trying to tell all of us. Anyway,” she stopped and bowed to the girl. “I’m Porter, I’m a rescue hero in Japan. These are my friends, I’m sure you already recognize them.” She bent down and also freed Izuku’s hands from the quirk cuffs.
The girl looked at her strangely. “Rescue hero? I’ve never seen them before in my life.”
“Ohhhhhhh.” Realization bloomed on Aiko’s face.
<What?> Shouto stood again, eyeing her.
“I think I brought us to a parallel world.” She nodded. She spoke English, ignoring the fact that Shouto still spoke Japanese, she figured he didn’t want the strange girl getting any information regarding who they were or where they came from. Aiko wasn’t so tight lipped, she enjoyed meeting new people and making friends, and in order to make a friend you have to share information with that person. “I’ve only done this once before when I was a 3rd year at UA. Yeah, it was 3rd year, because you guys had already graduated.”
<Can you get us home?> He asked, panic rising in his tone.
“Yeah, of course. What do you take me for, Todoroki-san? I didn’t really think about it when I opened the portal, I was just trying to get us out of there. I don’t know if that guy had a quirk or what it was, I didn’t have time to think, I just acted. When I don’t think about my destination, I get dropped somewhere random. I’ll take us home after Izuku-san wakes up.”
“Did you- did you just say a parallel world?” The girl asked in disbelief. “What is happening?”
Aiko opened her mouth to answer but was interrupted by a groan from the ground, signaling the return of Midoriya to the world of the living. <Jesus, Aiko-chan. What’re you trying to do to me?> He croaked and Shouto snorted but said nothing. Izuku sat up slowly, his head still slightly spinning, he must have hit it on the way down. He’d had worse.
“Again, I rescued you guys. If it weren’t for me, who knows how long you would have been stuck there.” Aiko argued. “Why do guys always complain after they’ve been rescued? No ‘thank you’, no appreciation. Just a lot of whining.”
<Thank you, Tsutsumi.>
<Thank you, Aiko-chan.> Both responses came at once.
<You’re welcome.> She started a little defensively but then softened, <Thank you. That’s all I wanted.>
<Do you have any water?> Izuku turned to Shouto, who opened one of the vials on his belt and looked inside of it, grimacing.
“Water?” Aiko said in English to the girl.
“I could go get some from my place. It’s right over there.” She pointed in the direction of a path through the woods. She shrugged, as though she felt she had nothing to lose. “You guys could come with me if you want.”
Izuku got up and brushed the dirt off his hero costume. “Thank you.” He switched over to speaking English and walked over to her. “I’m Deku.” He stated as if he didn’t expect her to know who he was.
“Jade.” She smiled at him, whatever tensions she’d been holding previously suddenly gone. Izuku had always had a way of making people feel at ease around him.
“Like the color?” His face lit up. “You know, your eyes are sort of that color.”
“So I’ve been told.” She smiled shyly, looking at the ground. The attention seemingly made her a tad uncomfortable, a hint Izuku caught onto.
“You know, my name is actually Midoriya Izuku, midori is Japanese for green.” He pointed at his hair and then his eyes. Jade looked up and met his friendly gaze and smiled again.
She looked back at Shouto and Aiko behind her and gestured to them. “Come on, I’ll show you the way.” They followed her to the wooded path.
<Shouldn’t we be getting back?> Shouto hissed in low tones to Aiko beside him, Izuku and Jade a few paces ahead.
“Oh, come on Todoroki-san, live a little.” Aiko teased and Izuku snorted a little, glancing back to catch Shouto’s eye briefly.
<We don’t even know this girl and we’re following her blindly into the woods.> Shouto spoke freely, growing comfortable in the fact that the strange girl didn’t understand him. <Am I the only one here who finds it strange that she seems completely comfortable inviting people that ‘dropped out of a hole in the sky’ into her home without knowing anything about them?>
Jade stopped in her tracks and turned around to face the pair behind her. “I have a lot of questions. But I’m not as stupid as I may seem to you.” She directed her statement at the one person who hadn’t yet spoken her native tongue. Shouto was certain she didn’t understand his words but something about her eyes told him she was very aware of what bothered him. “I already know what I need to know about each of you.” She smiled a little mysteriously and turned back down the path, the end of which was in sight, a modest ranch style house painted red with a fenced in backyard at the other end.
At the clearing on the other side, they came upon a row of cookie cutter houses, all of them appeared exactly the same save for the exterior paint. Jade led them between the red house and the white one next to it. They crossed a quiet residential street and approached one of the houses, painted dark blue. Jade turned to the 3 heroes again, “Do you guys want to come in? I’ll understand if you’re not comfortable with that.” Her question had been posed to all of them, but the statement she directed to Shouto. Aiko looked over at the man standing to her right, a turquoise iris glancing at her from the corner of his eye, then fixing on Izuku who stood next to Jade smiling.
“It’s ok, Shou. What do you think she’s going to do to us? To us?” Izuku emphasized that last part and Shouto sighed. He supposed Izuku was right, they were the best heroes their world had to offer. True, they got themselves into more than a few binds but Aiko was a really good ally to have in times like those. Between the 3 of them, they should be able to neutralize this girl if she’s planning something nefarious. Shouto wasn’t sure why this girl was putting him on edge but there was something about her that ignited a strange fear inside of him, there was something. He wondered if the fear was a side effect of whatever it was about her, he couldn’t quantify it, he just knew he wanted to leave. He also knew it was almost impossible to say no to Izuku. Izuku always got his way with Shouto, that’s how they ended up captured by villains in the first place. He nodded slightly at Izuku, who took it as an agreement. “Lead the way, Jade” He gave her one of his best, brightest, number 1 hero smiles. Shouto stepped closer to Izuku, in a protective manner, before they followed her through the door.
The inside of Jade’s home was cozy. To the left of the entrance was the living room, a bay window stretching across the majority of the front wall. A fairly large U-shaped sectional sat in front of it a few throws draped along the top and some pillows haphazardly strewn in various area of it, with a large leather ottoman in the center of the room. On the far wall was a floor to ceiling bookcase full of books in seemingly no particular order. A television hung on the wall opposite the bay window before that wall was cut short to lead into the open kitchen in front of them. To the right of them sat a small dining area and just behind it was a corridor, perhaps that’s where one would find the bed and bath rooms.
“Do you live alone?” Aiko asked, the home looked well lived in, but it was currently silent.
“No, I live with my two brothers. Taylor and Ryan. They’re both at work right now.”
Jade entered the kitchen and collected a few glasses from the cabinet above the sink. She moved to the refrigerator and retrieved a gallon jug of purified water from it, pouring a glass for each of them on the island in the center of the room. “So you guys are seriously from some other world, aren’t you?” She put away the jug and turned to them. “I mean, it sounds really, really far fetched, but it doesn’t feel like you’re lying. And I’m usually really perceptive when it comes to that kind of thing. Then there’s your strange hair colors,” She gestured to the two men, Shouto standing behind and to the left of Izuku, so close that their shoulders touched. “I mean, sure, people dye their hair all the time, but your eyebrows and eyelashes too? People sometimes dye their eyebrows but I’ve never seen anyone dye their eyelashes, I don’t even know if that’s possible.” she pointed to Shouto. “And he doesn’t seem like the kind of person who wants to draw attention to himself, so I can’t imagine he would willingly change his appearance to stand out.”
Izuku thirstily took the glass of water she offered and quickly threw it back, the refreshing liquid sliding cooly down his dry scratchy throat. “Wait.” He started after finishing the glass, “Another world?”
“Yeah, I managed to bring us to what I think is a parallel world. Jade seemed confused that we are heroes and she doesn’t know who you are.” Aiko caught Izuku up on the little bit he missed when he was out cold.
“What exactly do you mean by heroes?” Jade cocked her head to the side. “And you, Porter, is it?”
She nodded, “But you can call me Aiko, if you want.”
Jade smiled and continued, “Aiko, you said you’re a rescue hero. Like a firefighter or an EMT?”
“No, I use my quirk to rescue people. It’s called portal. I can open up holes to other places. If I have a clear destination in mind, I can control it. If not, it’s random.”
“That’s what you guys dropped through?”
“Yes. I usually don’t open them up in the floor but we needed to escape quickly, these two were indisposed and I couldn’t very well carry them out of there.”
“Where?” Jade had more questions with each answer she received.
“A shady industrial district of Tokyo. They were after a villain, they managed to get caught by said villain so I was sent in to retrieve them.” Aiko smirked a little. “That’s happened before, usually means they haven’t had time for, you know…”
“Aiko.” Izuku interrupted, fixing her with a look that pleaded ‘Not now.’
“So you guys are a thing?” Jade sipped her own water, leaning against the counter behind her, smiling at them comfortingly. She’d already guessed but she didn’t want to assume.
“Uh, well. Not exactly. Kind of? Maybe. I don’t know.” Izuku stumbled on his words a bit and Shouto said nothing.
Shouto owed this girl nothing. Her eyes bore holes through him and he averted his gaze to the wall on his right. It felt like she was searching his soul.
“Friends with benefits then.” She stated more so than asked. “You’re not necessarily in love or committed to each other. But there’s a lot of trust between you and you care deeply for one another.” She surmised with a smile, then cocked an eyebrow. “And sometimes you enjoy each other privately.” Both women giggled a little and both men turned beet red, Izuku’s hand coming up to rub the back of his neck nervously.
Shouto had to call upon his right side to suppress the flames threatening to escape his left. “Who are you?” He spat irritated, finally choosing to speak English.
Jade’s eyes widened in alarm, “I didn’t mean anything…” She trailed. “I just- I can feel the things you aren’t saying. I know that doesn’t really make sense, but it’s just a thing I do. I guess I’m just kind of sensitive to people’s feelings. I don’t know if it’s just I’m good at picking up on gestures and body language or…” She trailed off, uncertain of how to explain what she felt.
“Like a quirk, maybe..” Izuku picked up where she had trailed off.
“What is a quirk even? I don’t know what that means. A quirk is a strange habit that someone has. It doesn’t make people open portals to other worlds or have Pokeball colored hair. Explain what quirk means to you.”
“It’s an ability. Like a super power.”
“No. My ability to read people is not a super power.” Jade shook her head disbelieving. “Super powers don’t exist. At least they don’t here. I can’t speak to where you came from.” She paused. “What is your power?”
“Um…” Izuku was uncertain how to explain One For All to her, “It’s uh..kind of hard to explain. I’m best at close combat, my quirk helps to enhance my strength and speed. Detaining villains for the authorities and search and rescue following a disaster is typically what we are called upon for. We also run patrols throughout the city day to day in a bid to keep the crime rate low.”
“And you?” Jade’s eyes shifted to Shouto, his irritation still present in his expression.
“You know so much, you tell me.” He said bluntly in a low tone.
“Your super power is being rude then?” She quipped and Aiko stifled a small laugh.
“Shouto’s power is half-cold, half-hot. Hence the half and half appearance. He wields both fire and ice.” Izuku explained and Shouto glared at him for sharing additional information with this stranger.
<Can we go home now?> Shouto asked, again speaking Japanese.
“Not yet.” Izuku replied, still watching Jade. “We just got here. And this girl, she’s interesting. I like her.” He smiled over at her and she smiled back.
“Thanks, I like you too. Should I call you Deku or Midori?”
“It’s Midoriya.” He corrected. “Deku is my hero name, but you can call me Izuku if you want. Todoroki-san’s hero name is Shouto, which is also his given name. I think he’d probably prefer you call him Todoroki-san for now though.”
<I would prefer to leave now.> Shouto pressed and Izuku shoved an elbow at his friend’s ribs, silently attempting to remind him to be polite as they were guests in Jade’s home. <Don’t you think everyone at the agency is wondering where we are? Why Tsutsumi hasn’t returned with us yet?>
“That’s true.” Aiko piped up. “We should probably get going.”
“Can we come back?” Izuku asked hopefully.
“Sure.” Aiko nodded. “I don’t see why not. Now that we’ve been here, I can bring us back.”
“Maybe I could even come see your world sometime.” Jade shrugged. “Sounds more exciting than mine.”
“That sounds like a plan. Ready?” Aiko asked the two young heroes she arrived with.
“Yeah, I guess.” Izuku rounded the small island countertop that separated him from Jade. He bowed to her. “Thank you for your hospitality. And I definitely think you should visit us sometime. We’ll have Aiko-chan bring you. I think you’d fit in well there.” Izuku took her hands when they parted and lightly squeezed them giving her another of his famous grins.
Shouto said nothing at all and waited near Aiko for her to open the portal home. Aiko also bowed to Jade, thanking her in a similar fashion to Izuku before opening a portal on her kitchen wall. Jade craned her neck over to where Aiko had opened it and could see a busy lobby on the other side. A few people stopped and looked back in, presumably able to see the heroes and Jade in her home, but most people seemed not to notice.
“Izuku.” Shouto’s tone was urgent.
Izuku smiled at Jade one last time as he rounded the island and headed for the portal. “We’ll be back.” He promised as he stepped through, Shouto following him.
Aiko waved to Jade and as soon as she stepped through it, the portal disappeared and Jade was alone in her kitchen.

The Long Way Around 3
Welcome back and Happy New Year's Eve. It's Izuku's first day at Yuuei's General Education Department and, of course, it can't be easy. Still setting the scene, finally introducing my beloved OCs you've probably heard me mention. I got some pics of my cute kids to show off so those will be up later. Will probably post Four earlier than intended just to start progressing the plot more. Thank you for reading! I appreciate it!
Chapter Two <-- --> Chapter Four
Chapter Three: A Long Way to the Starting Line
Izuku was a mess as he ran through the halls of his new high school. His mom wouldn't stop hugging and congratulating him this morning which meant he'd just missed his train and had to wait for the later one. He wasn't late quite yet but he'd hoped for more time to explore the campus. If he was being honest, he'd wanted to scout out the hero students. Oh well there was time for that later, he slows as he approaches class 1-C.
He looks at his classroom with trepidation but also renewed courage. This is where his story begins. Just as Izuku was about to enter, the door screeches open and he finds himself on the ground as another kid runs into him. A bit dazed, Izuku looks with concern at the boy who'd toppled onto him.
He was about his size with very messy orange hair and bright red eyes but, more importantly, he was shaky, pale and looked like he was about to be sick. The boy scrambles to his feet and weaves his way down the hall, presumably towards the restroom.
"Oh god I can't do this, I absolutely can't do this. I can't-" Izuku winces at the sound of the kid losing his breakfast on the hallway floor. What a way to start the day, poor guy.
"Oh jeez, that doesn't sound good," a girl with dark purple hair tied in a tail says as she pokes her head out the door with concern. Next to her is another tall boy with fluffy brown hair and glowing green eyes. She looks down at him and it takes Izuku an extra second to notice the girl has no irises, only pure white sclera underneath her glasses. "Look at you, are you okay?" She holds out her hand to help Izuku to his feet.
"Your mom seems really sweet but you can't let her make you late every day," she says brightly once she lets go of his hand. Izuku just blinks at her. "Sorry, I'm Motome Ayame and my quirk is Past Vision, I can see up to an hour of anyone's past if I touch them," Motome explains with a small smile. Down the hall, the red haired boy has gotten to his feet and finally staggered into the restroom. "What's your name?"
"M-M-Midoriya Izuku," Izuku stammers, he was already a little off-kilter from the confrontation and now here he was talking to a girl! This isn't how he imagined his first day of high school would go.
"Nice to meet you," the brown haired boy says in a friendly, but distracted, voice. So distracted, he probably didn't even realize he'd spoken in English. Now that Izuku looks at him, he did seem like he had some Western features, perhaps he was mixed? "My name is Patrick Takamitsu, please call me Patrick, I'll catch up with you guys later. I want to make sure that kid is okay. Excuse me," Patrick says as squeezes past them to follow the redhead into the restroom.
"Anyway, welcome to class 1-C," Motome says with a shrug as she steps aside to let Izuku in the classroom. "We still have a few minutes before homeroom starts, I can introduce you to some people I was talking to earlier." She says in a way which feels unnatural even though it shouldn't be. Here, Izuku wasn't the quirkless freak who wants to be a hero against all odds. He was just another student with no ties to his middle school self.
"Yeah, sure, that'd be great. Thank you, Motome," she leads him over to a small group who smile and wave with acknowledgement as they walked over. Most of them were girls, he notes with a funny twisting feeling in his gut as he feels his face flush.
"This is Midoriya," Motome introduces to the small group of four crowding around a single desk. "He had an unfortunate run in with that poor kid on his way to the lavatory but Taka- uh Patrick went to go check up on him." Izuku smiles at the group and is pleased when they smile back. "Midoriya, this is Kiyoshi, Kaneki, Korudo and Taketsu."
"Kiyoshi Kokoro, class empath. Don't be so worried about people liking you Midoriya; I just met you and I like you just fine." A tiny girl with the pastel blue hair tied in a braid says brightly. The person standing next to Kiyoshi, a tall girl with soft brown deer ears, horns and tail sighs fondly and pats Kiyoshi's head.
"Don't mind her," the brown eyed girl says, "Koko-chan and I went to middle school together; she's always like that. She just says whatever she's thinking or feeling, even if it happens to be someone else's emotion." She looks down with a mock glare at Kiyoshi who grins before turning back to Izuku. "I'm Kaneki Shika by the way; it's a pleasure to meet you, Midoriya."
"I'm Korudo Dan," the only boy in the group with pale blond hair says with a proud smile. "I can control my body's temperature meaning I can not only survive in any environment but I can heat or chill my body. I may have failed the Heroics exam but I'm going to get transferred and become a great hero someday."
"and I'm Taketsu Akane, nice to meet you," says the dark haired girl sitting in the chair. "So is your quirk like Endeavor's son?" She was a big girl with a rounded face and wavy black hair falling over her shoulders held back by a red headband. "Can you form ice?" Taketsu asks.
"Well," Korudo says awkwardly.
"What about fire?" She continues.
"Not that either," Korudo answers testily, looking annoyed.
"Well what are you going to do? I think they want heroes who can do more than change their body temperature," Taketsu says with a smile but there's a teasing look in her dark red eyes.
"I still have a shot!" Korudo emphasizes. "The Todoroki kid has a natural advantage since his dad is the Number Two. Maybe I can't make ice or flame but I can still do stuff!" The girls begin to chuckle among themselves but Izuku finds he couldn't.
"I believe you," Izuku speaks up, calling everyone's attention back to him. He blushes a bit under the scrutiny but continues. "I-I mean, it is a pretty handy quirk from the sounds of it. Depending on how fast you could regulate your temperature and what adverse effects it had on your body, it could be very versatile. You could perform rescue operations to regions where other people wouldn't survive; you could warm up or cool down sick patients. I'm sure you could even come up with combat techniques that augment your quirk if you really worked at it." Izuku says, losing himself to his thoughts as he went through all the possibilities for a hero with Korudo's abilities.
"Hey, look out everyone; we've got a nerd in here." Another boy across the room with his hair styled in a tall pompadour says before letting out a loud nasally laugh. Izuku shuts his mouth on instinct from years of conditioning. He hates himself a bit for that, how easy it is to fall back into old, bad habits.
"Hey, don't listen to him Midoriya," Motome says, giving pompadour boy an empty-eyed glare that had the other boy turning away in discomfort.
"Yeah, that was amazing, Midoriya. Are you interested in Heroics too?" Taketsu asks with a smile that puts Izuku at ease. He nods shyly as she turns to address Korudo. "Sorry if I upset you, I was just teasing. Besides, I really don't have room to talk," she says a bit nervously. "I was interested in being a hero for a long time but I kind of gave that up."
"Well, I suppose you do have a point that I need to improve both my quirk and physical abilities if I want to transfer." Korudo sniffs, looking unhappy but unwilling to admit it. Korudo looks over at him and Izuku knows that Korudo was going to ask about his quirk. Luckily, Izuku was saved from that reveal by the classroom door opening revealing the biracial boy, Patrick, and the boy who'd been sick. Behind them comes one of the most terrifying men Izuku has ever seen.
Apparently the rest of the class agreed for they all freeze when the tall, dark-skinned man marches into the room. Izuku spots a few scars on his face but, more noticeably, his left hand ended at the wrist and three fingers on his right were partially amputated. Was he a hero? Or some kind of Yakuza boss?
"Good morning class, I am your homeroom teacher Chiura Hiro. Please take your seats," Sensei says in a quiet but stern voice that has the entire class seated and silent in a matter of seconds. "I will not waste your time or mine with meaningless pleasantries. Here is what you need to know: you will be on time every day for homeroom, you will be quiet unless I call on you and you will respect me and your classmates at all times. If you can follow these rules, then we will have a good working relationship," he stops and let the weight of his words sink in before continuing.
"Now opening ceremonies are about to start, we will walk there single file and, once that has concluded, you will change into your gym uniforms and we will conduct physical exams. I understand that your middle schools prevented you from using your quirks during these tests. Well, this is Yuuei and, even though you're in General Education, we still expect you to be able to manage your abilities. So you will be allowed to use your quirks within reason." A quick cheer bursts into air and is quickly silenced. Izuku gulps nervously. Use of quirks, huh, that was going to be tricky.
XxX
Even Yuuei can't make opening ceremonies interesting so Izuku spaces out for most of it as he frets over the upcoming physical exam. He'd hoped to have a little longer before his new classmates found out about his quirklessness. It probably wouldn't be as bad as it had been in middle school but just the few minutes talking to everyone this morning had been real nice. Izuku supposes it was better to get it over with than to keep living a lie. He winces as he remembers that he'd let slip that he was interested in applying for the Heroics department.
Great, they'll think he was useless and an idiot.
His pessimistic thoughts are briefly sidelined by the jaw-dropping announcement that All Might, the Number One Hero and everyone's favorite, All Might, would be teaching at Yuuei this year. Izuku can barely contain his excitement. He'd applied to Yuuei because it was the best hero school in the country but now his idol is going to be here too? Sure, he was probably only going to teach the hero students but Izuku might see him in the halls, hear that loud booming voice somewhere other than his tv.
Despite that bombshell of an announcement, the assembly ends on an awkward note when it became clear that hero class 1-A just, wasn't going to show up. He's not sure what happened there but the teachers look annoyed but not all that surprised. Izuku doesn't see Kaachan. His former friend had spent the last week of middle school announcing his acceptance into Yuuei's Heroics department so Izuku figures he must be with the absent 1-A.
soon, the whole class is dressed in their gym clothes and standing on one of Yuuei's many fields. Chiura-sensei paces calmly in front of them as they're lined up in class order. Maybe it was Izuku's nerves, but he feels like his teacher pauses a bit longer in front of him, as if sensing his weakness, before continuing.
"All right, we will be performing a variety of physical exercises today. This is just like you did in middle school but you will be allowed to use your quirks so long as you control them and use them only for the tests. At Yuuei, we believe in using all of our skills to reach our full potential. Is this clear?"
"Yes, Sensei," they all respond while Chiura-sensei nods with approval. He goes back to pacing with his mangled right hand holding his left stump behind his back.
"I suppose I should tell you a little about myself," he says in a steely calm voice that demands attention with its quiet assurance. "My quirk is Identification which means I can identify the quirk of anyone I look at and use that to compile basic strengths and weakness." Ah, so that was the reason Izuku got an extra look over. I'm still looking for it too, Sensei, Izuku thinks dryly.
"I joined the military right out of high school, became involved in special operations all across Japan and occasionally overseas. This," Sensei says, holding up his hands, "happened nearly 15 years ago during a mission. It cut my military career short but I found work within Hero Support. I have personally worked with many professionals heroes, including most of the ones on this campus, and yes, All Might himself. While I am not a hero; no one understands them better than me. So why am I teaching General Education?" He stops and stares them down with his pale golden eyes.
"Because I understand that the Heroics entrance exam is a load of bullcrap. Any idiot can smash a robot while talented students fall through the cracks. The General Education teachers serve as a checkpoint. I'm sure all of you at some point have dreamed of being a hero, but either due to failing the Heroics exam or lack of confidence, you ended up here. One of my jobs is to evaluate you, see if any of you are capable of transferring." Chiura-sensei stops and gives them one last appraising look, "so put your all into these exercises, your futures just might depend on it." He lets his words settle before giving them a quick nod. "You have five minutes to warm up and then we begin."
Izuku is all but shaking by the time his teacher finishes and why shouldn't he be? The man had looked right at them and said he was going to be the judge of whether or not they deserved to transfer. While it was common knowledge that students could move to the Heroics department, it wasn't something that happened very often. Izuku wonders if he's looking at one of the reasons why.
"Oh man, that was intense," Taketsu says, coming up beside him with a friendly but nervous grin. "Wanna stretch together? Exercises aren't exactly my strong suit and you look like you know what you're doing." Izuku was going to ask her what she meant when he realizes he had automatically started his normal warm-up regimen.
Taking a look around; Izuku notices most of the other students were awkwardly trying to figure out how to work their bodies and some weren't even trying at all. Strength training and martial arts has become such a cornerstone of his life that he forgot to factor in that most people probably don't have the same discipline.
"Yeah, sure, I'll show you what I do," Izuku says, walking Taketsu through some of his work-out. She was easy to talk to and the familiarity of his exercises quickly put him at ease as he explains the purposes of each stretch.
"You really are on top of this!" Taketsu huffs as she attempts to mimic his toe touch only to stop just past her knees. "What kind of quirk do you have to keep you in such good shape?"
"Um actually I'm quirkless," Izuku mutters, hoping she hadn't heard him. But the wide-eyed look in her eyes tells him that she had. "I uh hope that's okay," he says shyly
"Yeah, no, of course it's okay," she says quietly, as if Izuku were some kind of mythical creature she had only heard about but never seen. Taketsu shakes her head, "sorry, it's just a bit unexpected is all. You don't see many quirkless people these days. You said in homeroom you wanted to transfer to Heroics, right?"
"Yeah," Izuku admits with an embarrassed wince.
"Hey, I think that's great," she smiles revealing sharpened teeth. "I can't wait to see what you can do."
"Alright, if you're not ready now, you'll never be," Chiura-sensei announces, startling most of the class out of their small conversations. "We'll start with the 50 meter dash. First three in the class, come up and state your name, quirk and intention for study. You will perform the test and then the next group of three will do the same, is that clear?"
"Yes, Sensei," they parrot back as the first three began to gather up. An explosion rips through the air just then, stopping everyone in their tracks. Chiura-sensei frowns at them.
"We're not going to stop and gape every time one of the hero kids uses their quirks, now hurry into line." As the first three students line up, Izuku was trying to loosen up his muscles which had tensed up at the loud, and very familiar, sound.
According to the strength; Kaachan had to be on the other end of the school, in one of the aft fields probably. It was fine, he was just doing physical exams like Izuku was, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing to be afraid of. But it's easier said than done. Still, he tamps down the rest of his fear while the first students line up and give their introductions.
Izuku's anxiety quickly leaves him as he gets the chance to observe his classmates. It makes him realize a few things. One, spending so much time reading up on heroes, Izuku sometimes forgets that not every quirk was combat suitable or even all that useful; such as the boy who kept tripping over his unnaturally growing hair. Another was that, as far as physical training was concerned, most of his classmates didn't have the strength or stamina suited for these tests. Despite being quirkless, it was clear Izuku was more suited for this kind of exercise than most of the other students.
"Next!" And now it was his turn; Korudo, Kiyoshi and himself stepped forward. He listens to them explain their quirks again; Korudo with Thermoregulation was set on Heroics while Kyoshi the empath wanted to be a teacher.
"M-my name is Midoriya Izuku and I uh I also would like to go into Heroics." He stops and searches for the only person he sort of knows which is Taketsu. She gives him a worried smile and two thumbs up, "and I don't have a quirk." Well, that was done with, now for the fallout. A loud laugh breaks through the crowd. It was the pompadour kid who was hunched over as he laughs.
"What kind of idiot thinks he can get into the Heroics without a quirk? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard." A few other of the kids chuckle nervously along with him but most glare or shift uncomfortably, probably too ashamed to openly mock Izuku.
"Kamoto," Chiura-sensei snaps which instantly silences Kamoto's merriment. The boy is upright with a startled look on his face as Sensei steps forward and gets right in his face. "I gave you three rules this morning: be in homeroom on time, be quiet while I speak and to respect me and your classmates at all times." He leans down further until he was nearly nose to nose with Kamoto.
"If you disrespect your classmates, you disrespect me. Now tell me boy, is that something you want to do?" Kamoto quickly shakes his head. Chiura-sensei stares him down a second longer before stepping back to address the entire class. "Every student here has earned their place here until they haven't. Likewise, every student has the potential to go beyond and I'm going to do my best to ensure each and every one of you gets there. Now, may we continue Kamoto or do you have anything else to add?"
"No, Sensei," Kamoto whispers, doing his best to shrink into his uniform.
"I'm getting old boy, speak up," Sensei says with an exaggerated grin that reminds Izuku of Rikimaru-shishou.
"No, Sensei!" Kamoto says much louder, his face twisted with fear and embarrassment. Appearing satisfied for now, Chiura-sensei turns back to their group with a much calmer demeanor.
"Alright, if you three are done, then get on over to start line. I'll let you know when to go," Sensei says, resetting his stopwatch. Izuku is too busy staring at his teacher.
He didn't know teachers could do that; his middle and primary school teachers had never bothered to stop any of the bullying Izuku endured as a kid which had been so much worse than what Kamoto had said. He can't properly think of a time when someone other than his mom stood up for him once they knew he was quirkless. Chiura-sensei gives him a look.
"Is there a problem, Midoriya?"
"N-no, Sensei!" Izuku pipes up, dashing over to the starting line where Kiyoshi and Korudo were already getting into position. Now that the worst was over, Izuku feels like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. Kiyoshi wishes them both well, Korudo appears cocky and overconfident but Izuku is calm. He runs nearly 8 kilometers every day, a 50 meter dash would be nothing.
"Go!" And Izuku was off like a light. All too soon it was over but Izuku feels like he could keep running forever even while Kyoshi and Korudo wheezed. Sensei gives him an acknowledging nod.
"7.2 seconds, that's a full second better than the rest of you so far. Good work, Midoriya, I expect to see that same kind of performance in the rest of your tests. Next group line up, let's see if your quirks can stand up against training and discipline," Izuku lets out a breath as he steps back into line.
Once there, classmates are congratulating him and asking what else he could do. The attention was dizzying and Izuku simply nods at the people whispering at him, not trusting himself not to dissolve into tears if he opened his mouth. It wasn't Heroics but it was lightyears better than where he'd been. Izuku gives Taketsu an encouraging smile as she, Patrick and another boy step forward as the last group.
"Hey! I'm Patrick Takamitsu, please call me Patrick, I'm originally from the good ole US of America but my dad lives here so now I do too!" Patrick begins with a flourish as his skin began to brightly glow. "My quirk is Glow and, like many of my dear friends, I'm also aspiring for Heroics," he beams, literally, causing some of the other students to shield their eyes. Well, it wasn't the most exciting quirk but there were definitely applications with proper conditioning.
"And I'm Taketsu Akane, my quirk is Bloodspell which means I can manipulate my own blood and I uh," Taketsu pauses and considers herself before continuing, "I haven't decided what I'm doing yet." Finally, the last kid steps forward with a tired, but resolute look on his face.
"My name's Shinsou Hitoshi," he says quietly. "My quirk is brainwash and I'm going to be a hero." Not, trying, going to be. Izuku wishes he had that kind of confidence but with a quirk like that it was understandable. There were some hushed whispers behind him but Izuku couldn't make them out, but Shinsou's fists clench by his side. With all of the introductions done, the rest of the exercises seem to pass by quickly.
Classmates chatted more easily with one another, details were shared on quirks and personal history as they completed more and more trials. Back in middle school, Izuku used to be terrible at these things, always finishing near the end despite the lack of quirks involved. Since he started training with Rikimaru-shishou not long after school started, he'd never gotten to measure himself against his classmates.
The rest of the morning was spent completing the other activities but Izuku hardly felt tired. This was nothing compared to what he usually subjected himself to. They're given a few minutes to rest as the results are compiled. Izuku grins at Taketsu, lying red-faced and panting on the grass, she gives a half-hearted kick in his direction when she sees his smile. Kourdo was talking to Patrick, Kyoshi was leaned up against Kaneki's back and Motome had pulled out a book off to the side. For once, everything seems to be going right.
"Alright, line up. We're going to go over the results and then head back inside," Chiura-sensei orders.
The results were stunning to say the least. Izuku came first or close to first in nearly all of the activities as most of his classmates didn't have quirks that enhanced their physical abilities, moreover, it looks like most of them haven't undergone any sort of training. It's ironic in a way, Izuku was the only one in the class without some sort of special ability and yet he ended up with the second highest score of the class.
"Let this be a lesson to you all," Chiura-sensei says after he's announced the final scores. "Strength is not defined by your quirk, but by the discipline of your mind, body and soul. We have a couple of students who are actively pursuing the hero track, for those of you were are serious about that, I suggest you work on your performance and attitude. High school passes quickly, go beyond or go home. You have lunch for one hour and then regular classes will begin promptly at 1300, dismissed."
"That was amazing Midoriya!" Taketsu says, coming up to him with a bright smile that lights up her face. He blushes from head to toe looking at how cute she looks and stammers out an awkward thanks. "Would you be willing to train me?" she questions, pointing to herself. "I need to lose some of these hips, not to mention everywhere else too. What kind of training have you had?" She babbles as some of the others fall in line with them.
"Oh I've primarily trained with Jeet Kune Do with my master, but I worked with Aikido in middle school and have incorporated that into my style as well." Izuku lists off, feeling more comfortable in his element. "I've wanted to be a hero since I was a kid; I know I'm at a huge disadvantage without a quirk so I'm working on training my mind and body instead. Just because Yuuei hasn't graduated a quirkless hero doesn't mean it's impossible."
"That's incredible!" Taketsu says.
"That's insane," Korudo counters, the small group turns to look at him but he frowns and crosses his arms. "What? We were all thinking it," he sighs and runs his hand through his short hair and smiles slightly. "Still gotta admit you beat me fair and square in physical tests; even Taketsu beat me a couple of times and she's got 15 kg on me." Taketsu swats him on the arm.
"My point being, it's insane but Sensei is right, you can't write someone off before they get started and you've got a hell of a start. I'd be interested in working with you too, if you don't mind. I've got this amazing quirk but it doesn't mean much if I can't do anything with it." Izuku is touched by the friendly camaraderie and acceptance of his ambition despite how impossible it sounds.
"Yeah me too! We could make it a group thing!" Patrick says, leaning down to put his arms around Korudo and Izuku's shoulders. "We can be like a secret club! We can train together and get t-shirts and everything." He says, his face glowing a bit.
"Please don't touch me, Takamitsu," Korudo hums as he slips from Patrick's hold. "Midoriya, those things you were saying about my quirk in homeroom, can you read those back at me. I think you have some good ideas that I can work with. Of course, I'd be willing to help you with anything you needed in return."
"Come on, we can talk more over lunch, let's go before the hero kids take all the good stuff. All this exercise has made me hungry." Taketsu says, picking up her pace. The four of them were joking and laughing all the way to the cafeteria and Izuku had never felt so complete in his life.
For just being a stepping stone on his way to being a hero, the General Education department was pretty great too. When he goes home that night, and describes in detail the events of his day to his mom, he tells her that it feels like he's finally found somewhere he belongs, somewhere he can be himself for once. He tells her it's a place that can help him achieve his dream but also make him enjoy the journey getting there.
