Jeanne Roques (23 February 1889 – 11 December 1957), known professionally as Musidora, was a French actress, film director, and writer. She is best known for her acting in silent films, and rose to public attention for roles in the Louis Feuillade serials Les Vampires as Irma Vep and in Judex as Marie Verdier. Born Jeanne Roques to music composer and theorist of socialism Jacques Roques and painter and feminist Adèle Porchez, Musidora began her career in the arts at an early age, writing her first novel at the age of fifteen and acting on the stage with the likes of Colette, one of her lifelong friends. During the very early years of French cinema Musidora began a professional collaboration with the highly successful French film director Louis Feuillade. She made her film debut in Les miseres de l'aiguille, directed by Raphael Clamour, in January 1914. The film highlights the problems of the urban women in the French working-class, and presents a new representation of the female even by the working-class movement in the early 20th century in France. Adopting the moniker of Musidora (Greek for "gift of the muses"), after the heroine in Théophile Gautier's novel Fortunio, and affecting a unique vamp persona that would be popularized in the United States by actress Theda Bara at about the same time, Musidora soon found a foothold in the nascent medium of moving pictures. With her heavily kohled dark eyes, somewhat sinister make-up, pale skin and exotic wardrobes, Musidora quickly became a highly popular and instantly recognizable presence of European cinema. Beginning in 1915, Musidora began appearing in the successful Feuillade-directed serial Les Vampires as Irma Vep (an anagram of "vampire"), a cabaret singer, opposite Édouard Mathé. Contrary to the title, Les Vampires was not actually about vampires, but about a criminal-gang-run-secret-society inspired by the exploits of the real-life Bonnot Gang. Vep, besides playing a leading role in the Vampires' crimes, also spends two episodes under the hypnotic control of Moreno, a rival criminal who makes her his lover and induces her to assassinate the Grand Vampire. The series was an immediate success with French cinema-goers and ran in 10 installments until 1916. After the Les Vampires serial, Musidora starred as adventuress, Diana Monti (aka governess "Marie Verdier") in Judex, another popular Feuillade serial filmed in 1916 but delayed for release until 1917. Though not intended to be avant-garde, Les Vampires and Judex were lauded by Louis Aragon and Andre Breton in the 1920s for the films' elements of surprise, fantasy/science fiction, unexpected juxtapositions and visual non sequiturs. Filmmakers Fritz Lang, Luis Buñuel, Georges Franju, Alain Resnais, and Olivier Assayas have cited Les Vampires and Judex as influencing them in their desires to become directors. At a time when many women in the film industry were relegated to acting, Musidora achieved a degree of success as a producer and director. Musidora became a film producer and director under the tutelage of her mentor, Louis Feuillade. Between the late 1910s and early 1920s, she directed ten films, all of which are lost with the exception of two: 1922's Soleil et Ombre and 1924's La Terre des Taureaux, both of which were filmed in Spain. In Italy, she produced and directed La Flamme Cachee based on the work of her friend Colette. In the same year, she co-wrote (with Colette) and co-directed (with Eugenio Perego) La vagabonda based on Colette's novel of the same name. After her career as an actress faded, she focused on writing and producing. Her last film was an homage to her mentor Feuillade titled La Magique Image in 1950, which she both directed and starred in. Late in her life, she would occasionally work in the ticket booth of the Cinémathèque Française—few patrons realized that the older woman in the foyer might be starring in the film they were watching. Musidora died in Paris in 1957 and was buried in the Cimetière de Bois-le-Roi.

Marie-Antoinette Lix - Heroine of the Franco-Prussian war

Marie-Antoinette Lix (1839-1909) was born in Colmar to a military family. Her father had served in emperor Napoleon I’s army and taught her military skills. She excelled in horse-riding, fencing and shooting, After studying in a religious institution, she worked for a prestigious family in Poland.

In 1863, an insurrection against the Russian presence broke out in Poland. Marie-Antoinette joined the fight against the Russians and became lieutenant of the Polish uhlans. She was, however, captured and was granted freedom only because she was French and had to promise to never come back to Poland. She thus returned to her homeland in 1866 and worked for the postal services. 

The Franco-Prussian war began on July 19, 1870. Marie-Antoinette was determined to fight for her country, but was denied admission in the regular troops. She thus decided to join the Franc-tireurs ( French for “free shooters”), irregular soldiers deployed by France. She rose to the rank of lieutenant and was ultimately named Commander of the Franc-tireurs corps of the Vosges. She notably distinguished herself during the battle of Bourgonce on October 6, 1870 and tended to the wounded after the fighting was done.

Marie-Antoinette wasn’t the only woman to fight openly among the Franc-tireurs. If some women had followed their husbands as nurses, others fought actively. A certain Madame N. became a sublieutenant in her husband’s company, a company in the Jura was also led by a female lieutenant. Women also fought side by side with their husbands on October 13,1870 at Rambervilliers and defended the barricades and their children at Pouilly (October 30, 1870). They also followed the army as sutlers and on many occasions risked their lives to rescue soldiers on the field. Some of them found themselves engaged in fighting and were decorated for their bravery.

Explorer and author Jeanne Dieulafoy (1851-1916) also fought alongside her husband. Another notable female soldier was Marie Favier (born in 1843) who joined the Army of the Vosges as a volunteer and rose to the grade of sublieutenant. She was gifted a saber at Autun in December 1870 in recognition of her courage.

After the French defeat, Marie-Antoinette went back to civilian life. In recognition for her actions, a sword of honor was commissioned for her by the ladies of Colmar and Strasbourg.

 She wrote four patriotic novels and was finally admitted to a public hospital in 1898 where she died in 1909 at the age of 70.

VNC and Astrology

So, my sister, @skylights422, and I were talking about VNC (as we do) and we decided to sort out what signs everyone was. I think we did a pretty good job, so I thought I would share the results:

Aries: Astolfo - He’s  independent and assertive. Basically, he’s not afraid to take charge of a situation and he aims to get results.

Taurus: Olivier - So far, he seems like a very stable, cautious kind of fellow. He considers things from every angle.

Gemini: Roland; Riche. For Roland, he’s extremely social and hides his depths with a smile. He’s also extremely adaptable and willing to learn. For Riche, it’s harder to say since we’re still getting to know her but she’s highly intelligent and seems sociable albeit intensely awkward at times.

Cancer: Vanitas; Louis. These two parallel each other so much it would make sense they have the same sign. For both of them they tend to hide their more sensitive selves behind a wall but they care deeply about the people around them. For Vanitas, this shows up in how protective he is of Noé and other people’s lives even as he tries to act like he isn’t. For Louis, it shows up in how considerate he is of his sister, Dominique, despite all the reasons he has to be resentful of her.

Leo: Jeanne - I think she’s learned to be more reserved but if we consider how she was as a child and what she’s like when she’s more free to be herself she definitely seems like a Leo. She has a certain air of authority when she sets her mind to something, she’s deeply protective of Luca, compassionate, kind, and absolutely ferocious when it’s called for. 

Virgo: Chloé - Between her and Jeanne she actually is a reserved person; I don’t think she simply learned to be. She’s extremely intelligent and honest in her desire to protect and care for Jean-Jacques.

Libra: Noé - He absolutely cares about what the right thing to do is and he will pursue it. He attempts to be diplomatic and respectful no matter who he’s dealing with and he tries to look at things from every possible angle.

Scorpio: Dominique; Johann. For Dominique, we see she’s extremely perceptive when it comes to Noé and cares for him deeply. She’s downright overprotective to the point she’s willing to cross the line to keep him safe. Johann is similar; he’ll do anything to protect his family even when it might be mad to do so.

Sagittarius: Dante - He’s outspoken, independent, and seems ready to go the extra mile to get what he wants, which is usually information. He’s also not easily intimidated and is certainly shrewd.

Capricorn: Ruthven - He’s extremely disciplined, presumably ambitious, and set in his ways. He has a plan and he knows the steps involved to see it through.

Aquarius: Teacher/The Shapeless One - He’s extremely worldly, sees the big picture, and he’s eccentric. Rather than put his worldly interests to humanitarian ends he’s opted for something darker, however.

Pisces: Jean-Jacques - He’s extremely sympathetic to Chloé, perceptive of her needs, and sees her through rose-tinted glasses, I suspect. 

A thing of note: Noé seems almost exclusively interested in water signs (Vanitas, Louis, Dominique, Jean-Jacques...) and I think this explains why he’s had such a hard time understanding people. XD Air and water are notorious for having a hard time... The one exception is Roland, another air sign, and they get along easily.

We decided to leave out characters like Dr. Moreau and Vanitas of the Blue Moon since we know so little about them and they haven’t had enough presence to come up with a sign. Dr. Moreau just seems crazy and VotBM just seems mysterious, so... not a lot to work with there.
