SHADOW ATLAS
According to documents that open this book, the enigmatic and decades-old Umbra Arca Society has long compiled myths and legends. Though some question the organization’s very existence, it has allegedly archived a book “for each corner of the world.” This anthology, however, focuses on the Americas with a series of moody poetry and short fiction. Most of the entries follow a traditional format—a hero confronts an otherworldly, typically vengeful being or something equally heinous. But the spotlight shines brightest on the myths and legends themselves, originating from various locales. These include monstrous dogmen in Ohio (Tim Waggoner’s “God Spelled Backward”), the bogeymanlike Sack Man in São Paulo (Josh Malerman’s “Door to Door”), and a heart-eating female demon in the Yucatán Peninsula (Julia Rios’“Xtabay”). Recognizable characters crop up, such as sea and lake monsters or the tooth fairy in Annie Neugebauer’s spine-chilling “You Ought Not Smile As You Walk These Woods.” Other less-familiar tales prove just as fascinating, from raining fish in Honduras to the colossal “devil whale” in Jeanne C. Stein’s Colombia-set “Diablo Ballena.” An array of talented authors elevates this collection with indelible prose. Christina Sng, for example, delivers a series of creature-laden poems based in Mesoamerica and South America. In “The Massacooramaan,” she writes, “We reached Georgetown by morning. / It was empty / But for the dead bodies / Crisp under our Guyanan sun.” Editors Bissett, Dodge, and Viola stylize the book like an archive and include email correspondence, handwritten notes, photos, and sketches. Bissett and Dodge also contributed several Umbra Arca “case files,” detailing phenomena like mermaids in Mississippi and unexplained ghost lights in Saskatchewan, Canada. Meanwhile, Lovett’s complementary artwork, whether of grotesque, menacing creatures or dreamlike imagery, simply astounds.

Self-love Challenge Day 3
The lovely @thekm11 tagged me to do the @thefit-witch ’s #selflovechallenge
What is your favourite quote and why?
I don’t really have an answear for this, but I’m going to list some quotes that i either really like or that speak to me personally:
“Life may not be the party we hoped for. But while we are here, we may as well dance.” ~ Jeanne C. Stein
This quote might be the one that’s the best for the #selflovechallenge... For me it just means that I shoud never give up and always make the best out of every situation...
“Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk.” ~ Tony Stark
This is similar to the first one... But it also means that sometimes you have to do risky stuff to reach your goals.
“Respect existence or expect restistence” ~ Violator
This is just my general way to treat some people... Especially homophobic people and/or people who think that bisexuality is just a phase or not even a real thing... But that’s just the Slytherin in me talking...

“Life isn’t About Quotes About Life”
Life isn’t about quotes about life. Quotes about life are beautiful and idealistic and fun to read and admire, but they are useless without relevance. Quotes will never make you feel like actual life does. Quotes about life exist in multiple journals strewn throughout my room, they exist online and in the notes on my iPhone, they are underlined in every book I have ever read and on pictures taped to my wall. And I notice them, admire their perfect wording, and then they become little things that I love to remember. The thing about these quotes, is that they do not possess the ability to give me an exuberant, picturesque life like the whimsical words are taunting me with. To make a quote about life relevant, we have to live as though our lives too, are worthy enough to be written about.
“The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things” Henry Ward Beecher. One of my favorites. What I believe this quote is saying, is that to recognize the significant source of happiness, one must search among the ordinary. This quote has seventeen thousand pins on Pinterest, and I doubt (highly doubt) all seventeen thousand pinners implemented these words into their own realities. In order to truly harbor passion and pleasure from the simplest of things, a person must first notice the simplest of things. Life today is happening in fast motion, the news the internet, our families, our futures; all hurtling towards us at the speed of light, and who has time to admire how the first rays of sun peek out from the clouds on an overcast morning? Who notices the initial flower of spring, the smile they receive from a stranger, the text from their mother or the way their coffee tasted? These are the seemingly mundane experiences we take for granted. These are what Beecher wants us to realize. This quote is only effective if we take it personally; let’s all start improving our outlook on life by taking it personally.
“For what it’s worth; it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald didn’t use Daisy or Gatsby or Nick to deliver these words. He wrote them himself, and I took them to heart. I hope all of my friends and people I meet possess enough bravery to change the things that drag them down, as well as exude pride about the things that make them unique. Life is meaningless without positive experience, and what I believe we must all remember is this- you are not a puppet in anyone else’s game of life, but you are the puppeteer in your own. Create change and create memories and mend relationships and hold no grudge. Be authentically individual, and take no shame in feeling happy for yourself, for you deserve to live a life you’re proud of.
“Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we should dance” Jeanne C. Stein. There are moments in life where it seems nothing could ever be better, you’re on cloud nine with life, you’re in love and the sky is bright and you just ate a cookie. But these remarkable moments, inevitably vanish. Quicker than we know, all the light and sun turns to storm clouds and raging seas, depression consumes you and the only thing that keeps you alive seems to be lightyears away, hanging over you like the solitary lightbulb in an attic. We didn’t ask for heartbreak or death or failure, but we got it. Nobody promised that your family pet would live forever, so while you have dogs, love them. Nobody guaranteed success in everything you do, so when you succeed, be proud. Nobody invited you to the party of the century, so make a party in your bedroom, and dance. Life is better when we dance.
