He really should get a haircut soon.

It wasn’t like he didn’t enjoy some aspects of long hair. It was nice, actually. He liked being able to put it up better and do more with it than when he had it short, where the most he could manage was a little ponytail. It was nice to have to mess with in his hands when he was feeling nervous, and longer meant hair to run his fingers through and fiddle with. It looked cool when the sun hit it and refracted with gold off the strands, and he liked the little swish he could feel when he walked sometimes. Also it was fun to just dip his head forwards and do that rocker move where you swung your hair around.

But also, it was heavy, and on days like today, it was hot. It frazzled a tiny bit and felt like a curtain was on his head. Maybe in the winter it might be nice, but summer? Forget about it. It was hell’s curtain, sticky and sweltering in the Texas Tempo sun. It already a miserable time of year for him when he hated being over-warm. A thick mess of hair just made it worse.

He’d been walking with Salena along a lake area in a camping ground, and the heat was starting to get to him. The lake was right there, but honestly, a giant sopping ream of wet hair pulling at his scalp also sounded like a bad time. So for now, he’d go with an alternative.

The only thing he could think to combat it was putting into a ponytail and then a loose knot, to keep it up and out of his way. It was thick and heavy enough that after a few hours the weight of it might make that hurt, but hopefully by then, he’d be in a place with A/C and he could relax. Maybe google a hair place to get it sheared off. He liked short hair too, and he kind missed it, if he was honest.

Humming, he fixed the last of gold strands to the top of his head with a few bobby pins to keep it in place, head tilted forward so the nape stretched beyond the fabric of his hoodie. lines marked his neck as well as pink burns that shaped fingerprints, no longer hidden by heavy strands, and he shivered with no short amount of gratitude at the cool breeze that hit now that his hair was out of the way. He rubbed it for a moment and turned his head to crack the joint, left and then right.

Salena’s soft comment made him pause. “’Oh?’ Everything good, Sal?” She was behind him and he glanced over his shoulder at her with a raised brow.
