ADDICTION
Our government is addicted to cruelty to immigrants, and especially inhumane treatment of immigrant children. We can no longer afford to look the other way. The Law is the Flores Agreement which limits the holding of children to 21 days, but our government is ignoring this Agreement and warehousing children intentionally, and in growing numbers, separated from their parents in a growing number of concentration camps. The private camps that are being established are not open to the same human rights regulations as governmental establishments are.
There are other options.
The best option is Family Case Management Programs which were established to keep immigrant/asylum-seeking families together while they awaited trials. They were immensely successful in getting 99% of immigrant/asylum-seeking families to their Immigration Court hearings. These programs were slashed in 2017 by the Trump Administration and deemed too expensive — They ran $36 per family per day.
The warehousing of children forcefully separated from their families is unethical, immoral, illegal and is costing American taxpayers a shitload of money. U.S. taxpayers are shelling out over $700 per child per day. And what does that money get you?
For profit prisons are making money hand over fist while putting 900 people in a space designed for 150. Kids are kept in deplorable conditions, drinking toilet water to survive and standing on toilets to breathe freely. Illnesses including mumps are raging through these camps. Schooling, language, outdoor activinty has all be cut “to save money.” Some people are being housed in dog pounds and under freeway overpasses in areas where they are forced to sleep on gravel and where daytime temps are over 100 degrees (40+ Celcius).
The simplistic answer is don’t come here, but as the Trump administration cracks down on the governments in Central America, for allowing these surges, the conditions for residents living there becomes more dire and unsafe. When it becomes untenable, the surges start to build and head northward.

June Blog a Day
Comfort
“A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines” Ralph Waldo Emerson
My current comfort is filled with consistency. We could have a long conversation as to whether it is foolish or not, but I am consistent and comfortable. As a trans woman who is marginally out and has not yet started her medical transition, I feel a little imprisoned by my comfort. I’ve eased in to the calming warmth of a good and steady paycheck, lovely home, and loving family and wife. (And not to mention male privilege; if I’m being honest, that’s pretty darn comfortable, too.) They all fit so well and feel so comfortable.
Yes, since I am trans, I can’t help but ask, “are those comforts really foolish inconsistencies since I’m hiding a big part of myself?” I know the answer in my heart, but give me a minute while I enjoy a little more coffee and relax in my living room.

January 21, 2019 - A Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Among Star Trek fans of my generation this is a fairly well-known story. I wanted to share it one more time for a new generation, and because it deserves to be remembered.
Nichelle Nichols was the first African-American woman in a starring role on American television playing a strong, capable and (perhaps most importantly) non-stereotypical Black character in her role as Lt. Uhura on Star Trek. At the end of the first season, she had decided to leave the show. Officially, she wanted to leave to pursue her dream of being a Broadway singer. (Unofficially, she was getting tired of doing little more than opening hailing frequencies. She once related that in one show she “OHF’ed” so many times that after the seventh time she ad-libbed, “If I have to open hailing frequencies one more time I’m gonna scream!” That line was cut from that episode, but the producers liked it so much they wrote it into another episode!)
The weekend that she submitted her resignation (and was told by Gene Roddenberry to think it over), Ms. Nichols was at an event in California. One of the promoters told her, “ Ms. Nichols, there’s someone who would like to meet you. He says he is your greatest fan.” The actress turned around expecting to see some teenage Trekkie... and there was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr!
Ms. Nichols told Dr. King she was planning to leave the series, and he brought to her attention that she was a role model for thousands of African Americans, young and old, who watched the show. He convinced Nichelle to stay on Star Trek, and that Monday morning she approached Gene Roddenberry and told him she wanted to stay on the show.
Here’s a link to a site with the story:

What’s holding you back?
What is holding me back the most right now is probably a combination of my stubbornness/inflexibility in trying new methods of coping with my issues, and my mental health.

RISK The Egg Game Los Angeles, California
I had this idea. Since I usually buy chicks from a hatchery, but am considering paring down my flock size, so I decided to play a game with the kids down the street. Each of us would choose two eggs and I’d put them under a broody hen to hatch out. Whatever eggs hatched, the kids could name the chicks.
Then I thought why not, I decided to go big, and go public. I posted a photo of a flat of 30 eggs on FB and people "adopted" the eggs. It was really popular and I had to add 30 more. Finally, we started out the Game with 76 eggs including 10 that the neighbor's kid chose. A friend titled it Survivor: Chicken Coop, and that couldn’t have been more appropriate.
As...it's been a true disaster.
Albeit an authentic livestock experience.
There’s been a virtual massacre, between predators (primarily ground squirrels raiding the nests), other chickens eating and crushing the eggs and hens abandoning nests.
I actually tried to PURCHASE chicks to make up for the losses, and then the hatchery called, as they can’t deliver the chicks to Los Angeles as we are under quarantine for Newcastle’s in Southern California. SMDH
So, risk. The eggs that have survived the drama, if they are lucky, should hatch this weekend. This could be interesting.

JBAD the 1st
Fear isn’t the thing that keeps me from doing things I want to do. It’s lack of motivation. There are times when I’ve purposely done the scary thing to push myself to grow - trying out for plays and acting in them in high school, changing careers right before I turned 30, learning to drive when I was 26, taking on a project for work in a programming language I wasn’t that well versed in.
There are two times I can think of where fear prevented me from doing a thing. One is when Unfriendly, his youngest sister, and I went to Toronto. We went to the CN Tower and tried out the glass floor. I could not make myself walk on it. Some sort of reptilian brain response kicked in and my legs just wouldn’t work. I could not step on the floor while looking down. Unfriendly had no problem. It was the weirdest thing because even though I told myself it was safe, I was paralyzed and genuinely terrified.
The second time was last December - February-is when I had my breast cancer scare. There was a lot I probably could have accomplished since I wasn’t working at the time but there were many days where I was just a zombie. Couldn’t get out of bed. Couldn’t function. Couldn’t process the worst possible ‘what if’ scenarios. Other days I could and I even got the current job while waiting for the biopsy surgery.

January 7: Best/Worst about Tumblr
Best: The community itself. All but a handful of those I initially interacted with, for years, are long gone. My tumblr circle is smaller now, but I still cherish it. Tumblr is really unlike any other social media, in the best ways.
Worst: I mean, the smug social justice warrior assholes, the pornbots, the complete dysfunction of the Tumblr staff, and the mean anons are bad, but the thing I honestly hate the most is when several people I follow reblog the same thing, and it’s the actual longest post on the internet.

Jan 5: Go to drink order
My go to drink changes with the seasons, so:
Summer: Summer Squeeze (lemonade and Bacardi Limon or Absolut Citron)
Fall: Rum Runner
Winter: White Russian or Hot Toddy
Spring: Watermelon Margaritas
Lime Margaritas are enjoyed ALL year. So I guess that’s my Go To go to

What would I do if I weren’t afraid?
I’d make more phone calls. I’d answer the phone more often instead of letting to go to voicemail. And I’d check that voicemail more often when I did miss a call.
At this point in my life, my other fears are all pretty rational, a reasonable limbic calculation of risks versus rewards, tempered by experience and the wisdom of age. But the phone anxiety thing... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
