• once she even meowed at him, causing his heart to tug just a little

• and after a year into your relationship, dallas could finally tolerate your cat

• if you had to work a late shift, he would come over and feed her for you

• while you were in the bathroom, he would scratch her chin

• and rarely, if you fell asleep, he would pick her up and coo at her soft enough that you couldn’t hear. you did

• you would be sitting at your desk studying for a test as dallas paced around you room. he liked hanging out with you, but he got bored quick. and he hated just waiting around.

• thoroughly believed cats at witches, and that’s part of why he hated them so much

• but as he watched jazzy slowly step into the room, meowing softly at you as your worked, he thought, they might not be so bad after all.

• he was proven wrong when jazzy pissed on his shirt he has thrown in the floor later that night

• you two might be sitting out the couch watching a movie and you had already fallen asleep on his shoulder. he would keep quite as you snored softly.

• a little while later jazzy jumped on the couch next to him. he totally flinched.

• “what do you want cat”

• he huffed, turning back to the tv. but the rest of the time he say, jazzy would come up and rub against his arm, meowing at him.

• he sighed, glad you were asleep, unable to see as he began to pet the cat, her eventually crawling into his lap to lay next to you head.

• he would have thrown the cat off him if it wasn’t for you sleeping.

• at least that’s what he told himself

The Beat Generation 1992 Beat Poetry / Jazz / Spoken Word / Vocalese / Comedy

The much publicized, ridiculed, and parodied Beat Generation, which started sometime in the late 1940s and was eventually subsumed by the hippie and countercultural movements of the 60s, did not end up producing too much music of its own, but the whole lifestyle and aesthetic that it promoted, along with its iconic literary works from the holy trinity of Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs, is integral to the history of popular music as we know it. The beatniks themselves worshipped jazz cats like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, and plenty of musicians, such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles, drew lots of inspiration from the Beat Generation. Plus, another major figure of the movement, Neal Cassady, was also in The Merry Pranksters, a roving group of folks who ended up bridging the chronological gap between beatniks and hippies, and toured the continental US in a bus while giving out free LSD to people, which was chronicled in Tom Wolfe's famous Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test book; and members of the Grateful Dead were in those same Merry Pranksters too.

So what we have here is less a triple-disc compilation of music from the Rhino label—although there is definitely music on it—and more a full-on audio documentation of what made the Beat Generation what it was, which in addition to *some* music, includes a lot of Beat poetry, interviews, news items, and mini-audio documentaries too. Here, you get 197 minutes of Beat material, a solid chunk of which is provided by that aforementioned holy trinity themselves, plus kindred spirits like controversial comedic legend Lenny Bruce, whose righteous battle for the freedom to publicly say whatever he wanted without any repercussion made him a Beat ally, even if he was not in any way a beatnik himself.

But for the music that *is* on here, we've got some of the bebop jazz tunes that the beatniks went totally nuts for, including Charlie Parker's terrific "Cosmic Rays," which is one of many songs that demonstrate just what a deft saxophonist Parker really was. And we've got something from Tom Waits too, who arrived way too late to be a beatnik himself, but was nevertheless fond of the movement, and wound up showing his appreciation with his uniquely gravelly voice on "Jack and Neal / California, Here I Come," in which Jack is Jack Kerouac and Neal is Neal Cassady.

So if you're looking for over three hours of music, you're not gonna find it on this release, but if you want something of a definitive audio document of one of the most important and influential subcultures to have ever been formed in American history, without which where we would be now as a culture and society is completely unknowable, you should definitely check this thing out.

And by the way, there's an acid jazzy mid-90s trip hop tune by a German guy named Jazz Con Bazz called "Wayz of Life" that I've been listening to for years now that samples one of the audio documentary tracks that appears on this release. Really blew my fucking mind when I heard the sample too; like, I felt like Wee-Bey in that famous scene from The Wire that's since been turned into one of the greatest gifs of all time. Holy shit! 🤯

This is what I meant in my last post abt this version of Macavity trying very hard to be simultaneously more and less provocative btw.

It’s kind of fascinating-- there's a big chunk of Cats that does little to no storytelling beyond 'check out this cool character who’s part of the Jellicle club' and yet Macavity is one of the few songs that’s actually trying to tell the audience something vital to the plot: Demeter knows Macavity.

It's important that the audience learns this-- not only that there is a story between those two, but also what that story is. If Cats doesn't establish that connection, then it'll just look like Macavity is snatching up random ensemble cats during his and Munk's fight. This song establishes the connection between Dem and Mac, and gives the audience a big fat reason why Mac is targeting her specifically: their relationship was sexual. You cannot escape from the fact that their relationship was sexual in 98 Macavity.

And this gives Mac a motive! It characterizes him as a villain, it establishes why he's even interrupting the Ball in the first place, it establishes why he targets Demeter, & it establishes why Demeter specifically seems terrified of him. Without the context this song provides, Demeter might as well just be a random ensemble cat who gets the responsibility of yelling 'Macavity' for each scare.

See: Macavity and Demeter had a sexual (maybe romantic) relationship > Macavity wants to get Demeter back > Macavity interrupts the Ball and takes Deuteronomy (and attempts to take her along the way) > Misto has to bring back Deuteronomy. This song sets up a big chunk of what Cats' plot/conflict is.

But tswifts bomba/dem Frankenstein (Demetaylurina if u will) is very obviously not in a relationship with Macavity; she works for him. He's her boss. She's not even a Jellicle, there's no reason we need the relationship between these two cats to be explained to the audience.

The stage play certainly doesn’t bother establishing the relationship between Macavity and the 2-3 henchcats that help him kidnap Deut! Their relationship doesn't matter, Demetaylurina herself doesn't really matter either, all she does is drug the cats (which is its own weird thing, plot-wise) and she only does like 2% of that job, most of it is M&R and the rigged moon prop.

And then you can say 'well she doesn’t matter to the plot but her relationship with Macavity can still be explored, not everything has to be plot-relevant’ which is true, there are big chunks of Cats that’s pretty much just exploration of non-plot-relevant cats' relationships. But the song doesn't explore their relationship. Because their relationship in the movie pretty clearly isn't sexual, and yet Demetaylurina still acts and sings in this provocative manner that (tries to) mirror the stage version. Like I said in the other post, the choreo that slings it in the audience's face that Demeter (and Bomba) had a sexual relationship with Macavity is gone, so their relationship is comparatively pretty sexless. But there's still this sexuality to the song that tswift just tries to jam in there with her voice and sort-of dancing that serves absolutely no storytelling purpose.

All of the sexuality in regular Macavity is very pointed-- both Bomba and Demeter have this sexual tension between themselves & Macavity, which is impressive bc he’s not even present. That 'there’s no one like Macavity' line where Demeter smacks a hand on her inner hip is an excellent example-- and it loses all of its oomph in tswifts version.

By all definitions, if they wanted to rework Bomba/Dem to being Macavity's henchcat instead of his former lover, then the song should've reflected that-- make it a menacing jazzy song like the original M&R!

But they don’t do that. The song is still sexual, or at least it tries to be: instead of the very potent, very pointed sexual aspect between these two characters in the stage play, you get Demetaylurina just kind of putting off sexiness into the world with no target and no goal, it’s just. there. It doesn't have any storytelling aspect to it and frankly it feels like the bargain version of most Demeters and Bombas-- and that's not even a dig at tswift, because again Dem and Bomba actresses are working with this actual story, dynamic, and history that they're given to act out to the audience as vividly as they can. Meanwhile tswift is just. Being sexy. Her character has no background, no meaning, no dynamics with other characters, no history. She’s just there. Being passively sexy.

Except it’s not passive because you can tell she’s trying very hard to come off that way.

It's just… odd and janky.

Date: Wednesday April 17th Album: Ten Artist: Gardenelia Released: 2024 Genre: Jpop Review: Turns out Jpop and house music are closer than I thought. This album is energetic, pulling jazzy electronic influences from the pop side and the synth filters straight out of a good trap song. There are times when the band breaks away from your typical catchy dance tunes to throw down some truly surprising house beats, but it’s blended in together spectacularly. There is an effortless fusion of the two I find especially exciting, which takes genres in fun unexplored directions. It’s hard to even describe what’s going on here— check it out if you’re a fan of Jpop that pushes boundaries into places you aren’t expecting. Favorite Track: Cat Planet

as promised here in MY Insane Cats Fandom Story. formatting this greentext style bc it’d be fucking unreadable as a big block of text - be me - cats the musical fan, dumb teenager - in groupchat with several other cats the musical fans - our number one group activity is keeping up with this one fanfic, “the silver protector and me” - it’s 70k words of munkustrap x the author’s self insert oc - from the moment you pick TPSAM up it’s not great from a writing perspective but the further you read the more unhinged the plotlines get - everyone can shapeshift into normal cats with no explanation. the main character is french n everybody else is incredibly aroused by it. all the girl cats frequently body shame the main character for being too skinny. the love interest is abusive towards his son because he thinks he might be gay. there’s a bunch of sex slavery just like an insane amount - this isn’t really that alarming to us. obviously the author might sort of be goin through it but at the end of the day it’s just a fanfic - however. there is also an author’s note at the end of every chapter where the author (we’ll call her jazzie after her self insert) shares wayyyyy too much about her life - we learn a bunch through these. she’s british. she has a terrible ex. she loves the guy who’s she’s currently dating but he hates cats the musical. she’s been to cats the musical 115 times. she has a 7 year old son - she also links her instagram + tumblr. maybe this was a dick move of us but being teenagers we check them out - jazzie’s instagram is pretty normal other than the fact that everyone but her looks miserable in every photo - whatever. they might just have resting bitch face - jazzie’s tumblr is CRAZY - we discover that she’s been in several bona fide large scale scandals - you name it jazzie has posted it. most recently she’s gotten in trouble for comparing the traditional body modification of various unrelated african cultures to, and I quote, “dumb bimbos getting too much plastic surgery” - she’s also fighting on a daily basis with people who hate her fanfic over its various Issues, including one heated debate with an actual sex trafficking survivor - about a week after we start checking in on jazzie’s tumblr, she posts that she’s going to be taking a break n moving all her mutuals into a discord server - this server will also house the live drafting of new chapters of TPSAM - being idiot teenagers we decide we HAVE to get into this server to watch TPSAM get drafted live. its siren song is far too strong for morals to assuage us - in an attempt to gain mutualhood before jazzie leaves for good, I create my cishetsona - her name is abi n she’s a 17 year old girl living in indiana who loves only two things: cats the musical and her homophobic 23 year old fiancée who works in his dad’s garage - she’s a closet tuggoffelees shipper as well but she openly ships mistoffellees/victoria (which is for some reason the default straight ship in cats even though victoria canonically hooks up with plato. no I’m not sure why either) - abi begins participating in the cats the musical fandom by posting annoyingly heterosexual content - within one (1) week, this has gotten her into jazzie’s discord - a few of my co conspirators have played the same trick. there’s maybe four or five of us in there - inside this discord we are exposed to fandom drama we never even knew existed - jazzie frequently complains to the server about her current boyfriend. she hates how much he dislikes cats the musical, n hates even more that he’s always telling her to pay more attention to their kids (plural) instead of writing cats the musical sex slave fic - do you remember how I only mentioned the 7 year old son earlier. this is the first mention we hear of another kid - the next day something terrible happens

- we MEET the other kid - he is 12 years old n he is a SERVER MODERATOR - this means he’s been fully privy to the active drafts of his mother’s super explicit cats the musical sex slave fanfic - apparently nobody on the server was aware this moderator was jazzie’s son either, because her genuine mutuals seem just as shocked as we do - at this point one of the real mutuals snaps n tells jazzie that while she loves TPSAM, kids shouldn’t be anywhere near it. a good half of the server enthusiastically agrees with this - jazzie takes this as a personal attack on her parenting abilities n the server fucking implodes - a couple days later the whole thing gets taken offline - abi gets a message from jazzie apologizing for the whole situation n thanking her for not attacking her like everyone else - I don’t have the energy left to tell her abi isn’t real, so abi says “thank you. it’s no problem” - there is brief discussion of reporting jazzie to some kind of authority, but we decide that’ll probably only make it worse for her kids, so we don’t - we figure she got the message to not involve her preteen son in the drafting of her sex slave fanfiction when all of her friends left her - TPSAM has not updated since. I really hope it’s because jazzie stopped neglecting her kids for it - it’s for the best she stopped. I hope her family is doing better now - but frankly I’m a bit sad we’ll never get lines like “can I cum in you?” “oui!” ever again

SONGS OF THE MONTH

Came out in April but I first heard it in May:

"Funkfest" by grouptherapy. Don't even really know how to describe this track? Some of this track feels like being sucked into a cult and skateboarding pussy first into it. This song feels mischievous. Like it's too cool for you but is insecure about that. (Tinashe did a song with them called "Disco Pantz" which has an almost opposite vibe but like... check it out too.)

 "Give it To Me" by Miguel. Not something I expected from Miguel. I just like the contrast of his like contrite crooning with the dirtier guitar and the darker beats. Really feels liek begging. Would like the lines about being fertile... to stop existing tho.

"Where do we Go?" by Okamoto's. Summery, indie Jrock sound.

"Float (Coco & Breezy Remix)" by Janelle Monae. I felt like the original version of this song was kinda resting on Janelle's laurels. Like it wasn't bad but it wasn't pushing boundaries in a way I expect of Janelle. This remix isn't pushing boundaries either but it's so fun that I kinda forgive its roteness.

Not from April and I didn't even hear it for the first time in May but FUCK IT WE BALL! "Nihil" by lynch.. Jrock but the guitars kinda remind me of what was going in in FCPREMIX by The Fall of Troy. If you think it'll be identical to that song, you'll be disappointed but like... if you know what I'm talking about, please check out this song. Vocals are literally the opposite of that song tho, lol.

"Giving Me" by Jazzy. Dynamic and pulsing dance track. Symmetrik Remix is also pretty good, if you want a more beat heavy, fastpaced song. Do not know enough EDM terms to describe either version properly. Feel like the Symmetrik Remix would be labeled a ~club remix tho.

May Releases:

“Lipstick Lover” by Janelle Monae. Not her most experimental work but it’s still just so comforting to hear her again!! Yes, I’m including two of her songs here, if only to shout out that music video 😳

All the bonus tracks on the ten year anniversary album of Random Access Memories by Daft Punk. I don't know how much non-Daft Punk fans will get out of them, since they're largely demos and outtakes but god I WEPT. "Horizon" feels like floating amongst the stars. "Touch (2021 Epilogue)" feels like the ascension TO the stars. Even the vocoder test track feels funky and sublime.

"Little Things" by Jorja Smith feels sultry and addictive, though it might wear out its welcome in its repetition but if you reach when the song breaks down and collapses into itself, I think you might get a pleasant surprise.

The Used released a new album, it's kinda more of the same but the lyrics are... not good. That said I enjoyed it, it's fun. "Dancing with a Brick Wall" is kinda a stand out to me?? "Dopamine" has their older, more theatrical vibe though.

Meanwhile, I wasn't a fan of Kesha's new album but "Only Love Can Save Us Now" and "Something to Believe In" feel like they should be in like... powerful, kinda dark magical girl AMVs.

"Cat & Mouse" by Blackswan. This list needed some kpop on it, tbh. The beginning isn't great but then when it gets into the swing of it... SONG OF THE SUMMER! It's trying to capitalize on Cupid by Fifty Fifty which was just trying to be a kpop Say So but IMO this is my fave of the three songs, lol. Even with the embarrassing "Skrr" bit.

IRL stuff.

Holy shiznit. Yes tis I, blowing the 2 years worth of dust off this tumblr. I'll be honest, I just got distracted with a lot of things on the IRL front. So writing as a whole was affected literally as it took a back burner.

The fight with Bedbugs:

In Cat News: We only have one cat now. I mentioned Trix before, I had to surrender her to the humane society because she had a blockage in her intestines and I'm very certain after this long, my fur baby did not survive the operations involved to extract the whole thing. I still miss her fuzzy sassy calico face.

Jazzy and Ariel, two bonded siblings were fixed, and were doing well during the bed bug fiasco, however I have a PSA to include in this post about cats.

Ariel, met an untimely end in.. a dryer. It was accidental, nobody thought to check said appliance before it was turned on. I actually feel guilty about this, because I should have checked the dryer, Ariel was a very quiet cat, and their mews were so soft, you'd have to strain to hear her. Add that with, I'm used to the dryer sounding a little off balanced do to the heavy dryer loads of jeans, and pants that my father wears. This is by no means trying to justify the event, I'm just telling the truth.

This death happened last year in October.

Hence the PSA: If you are a pet owner, always check your washer and dryer for your pets before you start a load of laundry. I've developed an additional PTSD flashbulb memory because finding Ariel in the dryer , un alived was the most heart wrenching thing, and I pulled away from tumblr entirely after that.

I've been self healing with coloring stuff. Stayed offline for the most part, except playing xiv with my closest and best friend and romantic partner.

Who came up to where I live back in May, we spent a lovely time together, and they gifted me with art supplies, and some squish mallow pokemon babies, a coloring book, new markers, and a new book. We did partake of some booze which was very yummy. Our only regret was that the time spent, was too short.

HOMESHAKE- Horsie (SHHOAMKEE Records)

Toronto’s HOMESHAKE, Peter Sagar, has released his second album of the year. (CD Wallet came out in March.) It’s another album where Peter does it all (written, performed, mixed, produced), but this is a different bag than the earlier one. Horsie has a chill, jazzy vibe to it. Anyway, it’s a different sound than I’m used to so I had to check it out. The album begins with “Ravioli.” It’s a short, dreamy, keyboard-y track filled with a tuba-bassline. Then the hip hop vocals kick in. Next up, the title track, “Horsie,” is where he really shines. A beautiful indie folk track (with a beat) that caught my attention right away. The jangle guitar part reminds me of Pretenders’ “Private Life,” but Peter’s vocals slide in and it’s a beautiful song with trickles of keyboards. The lyrics capture his loneliness. “i can feel it in the air; could u roll the window up a bit; leaning back into a stare; on the horsie that we rode in with; pick it up and dial in; and my mind will wonder if it’s happening here again, again i’m lonely.” It ends with soaring guitar which turns into distortion. “Diner Plates” features falsetto singing that I could have sworn was a woman singing. Nope. It’s Peter. I had to check again. It’s a really chill song that borders on R&B. More lyrics about isolation. “dreaming even tho i’m awake; pocket lets me know with a shake; that you’re with me now as i fold; room is cold and the hour’s late; here by myself with everybody else.” As a contrast, “Blunt Talk” features slowed down, distorted singing from Peter’s lower vocal capabilities. Warbly keyboards highlight this one. The lyrics say it all, “i know that you’re getting sleepy; pavement turning into soup; in a moment you’ll be sinking; mother named you i love you.”  “On A Roll” features slowed down jazzy, but distorted guitar. Next up, “Smiling” is another super slow song, with trickling keyboards and soft beats. “i ain’t gotta tell, i can just keep it inside; i don’t got a tell, i can just bluff it all night.” “Nothing 2 See” picks things up a bit, more R&B vibe with a jazzy overtone. Some interesting solos on this one. Here’s the video:

Up next, “Simple,” is the longest track on the album. More soaring guitars (reminiscent of Bill Nelson) begin this beautiful song filled with heartfelt lyrics, soft rhythm section, and gentle keyboards. Watch the video here:

“Easier Now” is another slower track that is filled with jazzy saxophone. “Believe” displays a funkier side of HOMESHAKE. “Empty Lot” truly captures the whole vibe of this album. Slow, chill, lonely vocals, and soft beats. The lyrics say it all, “waiting in an empty lot; for time to stop; old yellow lines fall apart; where i park my thoughts.” Here’s the video:

The album ends with “Ice Tea.” It’s a distorted blast of softcore with muffled vocals. HOMESHAKE has been releasing music for ten years. He’s new to me, but it looks like he’s finally found his groove. Hats off to any artist that can release two albums in a year. He’ll have plenty of new music to share live on his tour this fall. Okay on Saturday we meant to leave at 3 in the afternoon. Instead we leave at 5 after a full day of packing camping gear (Kimmer) and cleaning the house (Dave) plus a little last-minute shopping.

Out the door, on the road, we cruise 405 to Hamptons Seattle/ South Center where we check in around six

We're missing a few things, though, like a luggage strap for one of our giant bags that's actually missing one of its handles so the remaining one just sort of flaps about. We shop some Target and Dollar Tree between six thirty and seven fifteen for the luggage strap (settled for duck tape instead), Easter candy for Kimmer's cousin, a chocolate bunny rabbit for me, and then some additional food for the evening and breakfast the next morning so we can eat on the fly if we have to.

By the time we're back in our room, it's 730. We figure we'll be in bed around 830 because that's the smart thing to do. Instead, we don't settle down for sleep until a little after ten. Kimmer studies. I score a hot chocolate downstairs by the lobby as well as water and a chamomile tea packet to go with the hot water Kimmer's already got going in the room. I decorate my thermos with Harry Potter, National Parks, Cheeky & Dry, Mod Pizza, and some other random stickers. I finish the evening coordinating with the gentleman looking after our cats. Did a huge text dump into his messaging app on the care and feeding of two cats that's so much more complex and complicated than taking care of just the one. Then I set three alarms on my phone. 245. 3. And 305. 245 did the trick, though, because we weren't sleeping at all deeply through the little less than five hours we could. It was more like we were playing tag with sleep. Sometimes we'd catch it. Most of the time it would get away. Not sure what that was all about. Maybe it was excitement on our part. Maybe it was the people, a family Kimmer says, who were arguing in the room next door during the wee hours of the morning.

So when my first alarm goes off at 245...

No big deal.

Our bodies weren't that invested in sleeping anyway.

In no time, we're outta bed, snagging the breakfast Kimmer scored at Target the previous night, mango yogurt and berry yogurt and split a banana. Then I hit the shower after taking a photograph of the alarm clock that reads

Because I can't believe it myself.

While I'm in the shower, Kimmer repacks what little we unpacked the night before, then she gets ready and we're outta there. 

Three thirty five AM we're walking out the front door.

We embark on an eight-minute basically nighttime drive to Doug Fox Parking, during which we travel part of the way almost directly beneath the light rail track that climbs the hill west of South Center Mall.

For the first time ever we're confronted by a Lot Full sign. Not a problem if you have a reservation. Which we do. Unfortunately, I've got it tucked in my bag in the back of the van. So I pull forward, get out the car, grab my reservation which the attendant checks, then we snag parking just as he pulls a shuttle right beside us. The whole process seriously moved. And now we're on our way in a packed shuttle to the Southwest drop-off just before 4AM, mere minutes behind our projected schedule. We check our bags, the two massive ones clocking in at 44 and 47 pounds, meeting the 50-pound limit so thus they travel free. Then we're into the TSA line where, because it serpentines, we get to see all the different ways family resemblance manifests across generations. Also, we're getting our first look at bleary-eyed human beings of all ages. Children, especially. It's like they just pulled an all-nighter. 😳 The morning, in fact, is marked by a lot of kids who look like this. 😕 They're wiped out even though they haven't done anything yet. 

By the way, some are wearing their PJs, some are dressed pretty jazzy, and all are wearing the eyes of being up all night. ☹️

Once we're through TSA and down the concourse, it's three minutes until it's time to take our place in line.

Our super early morning's timing wasn't tight... but it kind of was without us thinking too hard about it.

And the thing I said before about bleary eyed human beings? 

That was definitely the missus 'n me who slept deeply on both legs of our flight, short as each one was.

Landing at LAX around ten thirty was kind of a woozy experience recovering our bags and rolling everything out front and then a coupla blocks over to catch our Lyft at the new transportation hub.

Annoying. Exhausting. Kimmer was not pleased.

A few minutes later, our Lyft driver scoops us up and drops us at Escape Campervan around 11:15AM. Within a half hour, the staff at their  Inglewood location gets us checked in, set up, and on the road with our full complement of camping luggage.

To where, though?

Kimmer's idea is that she'd like to drive down the coast before cutting inland to her cousin's place. 

We're also hungry though.

Plus, earlier at one of the airports we were both remarking on how often we end up traveling on Easter Sunday. Mostly by car or van. This time by plane. But yeah.

Over the years we traveled a lot of Easter Sundays. 

At the same time we're thinking about that, I remind her of that one time we were traveling with Linzy. I think this was in the Rialta RV and we were driving down the coast from Crescent City California. It was taking longer than we figured, though, so we cut inland earlier than intended and Kimmer figured out a hotel for the three of us as we traveled through the middle of the night.

The next morning (of course) after that midnight ride, it was Easter Sunday. Having no plans, we decided on a brunch at the local Denny's. The place was absolutely packed. We did get a booth, though. And, I'm guessing, a bunch of grand slams.

So.

With that memory freshly recovered, we drive down to one of the Denny's restaurants in Long Beach on the Pacific Coast Highway during a relentless rainstorm, water pouring in streams off the roof of the restaurant as we scooted ourselves down the block from the parking lot, along the side of the restaurant, up the stairs, and into the lobby. At our table, we order a Mile High Denver Omelette, a side of fruit, sausages, and brioche French toast along with a coffee and a tea.

Later, we shared our experience there with our waitress and the manager. Our waitress encouraged us to contribute a Google review.

Which I did.

"My wife and I actually had to travel today, Easter Sunday. We were up at 3 in the morning for a 520AM flight with one stopover. So by the time we arrived in California we were pretty wiped out.  😕 We were really hungry, though, and decided to stop in Long Beach for breakfasts for lunch. The service and attention we received from everyone from the manager to wait staff to assistants was the loveliest thing. We were welcomed and attended to in ways that surpass some of our fine dining experiences where there's only one point of contact. We're definitely leaving here feeling more energized and ready for the rest of our day ☺️"

And yes.

It really was that lovely.

We were at the Long Beach Denny's from quarter past noon to one thirty at which point the rain let up.

By this time, with rain dogging our travels, we travel first to the Irvine Sprouts to pick up groceries before heading to Kimmer's cousin's place where we roll in around 230. Kimmer's cousin's prepping his teardrop trailer he's taking camping because that's what we're doing this week: our annual Family Camp on the Hill Above Laguna Beach Adventure! If the weather permits (and it usually does) there's beach exploration to be had, sunsets to watch, stars to see, family campfires to experience and, since this is right along the PCH, I always think good grief, Veronica Mars lives down here. 😉

For now, we pull our bags outta the van, Kimmer and her cousin take it all into his place while I park up the hill. Afterward, Kimmer's cousin, Derek, continues his work, and Kimmer gets cozy upstairs for the papers she's gotta write and the tests she's gotta take for her doctoral program before the day is over.

Yeah. Her doctoral work is ongoing. Even while we're in sunny California.

Around 430 I head out to do some grocery shopping at Trader Joe's and Ralph's for dinner (and dessert) as well as a little bit for the week.

Back at 630, we all break from our late afternoon activities for a meal featuring bacon-wrapped, slow-cooked meatloaf and a viewing of Jesus Christ Superstar, a movie that I've never seen before.

Crazy stuff. 🤔

Afterward, Kimmer's back to papers and tests, Derek finishes his work before turning in for the night, and I hang out with Kimmer's nephew, Kyle, while he plays video games and I write. We do those things and talk at the same time and, eventually, it's just talking about neuroscience and academics, if you can believe that. Plus the story of my cousin in Europe who, whilst interviewing for the job of bodyguard answered the question Would you take a bullet for me? with a prompt No. But if there's time I'll push you out of the way. 🤣

By n by, Kimmer comes downstairs, triumphant in her day's doctoral accomplishments... and joins us.

By now, the day's just nudged into tomorrow and Kyle finally asks the obvious question.

Why are you guys still up???

Hmmm. Good question.

We were gonna take a nap just as soon as we arrived but that never happened.

I guess we just caught our second wind, I tell him. And then proceed to tell the tale of our earlier experience at Denny's, the experience that gave us the shot of energy that sustained us through the rest of the day.

Apparently.

To which Kyle says

Do you know you could've paid way less for breakfast?

Wait. What?

Yeah. Turns out Denny's gotta menu (back of the menu) for kids over 55. Now, I'm not saying the missus 'n I are over 55... but my spin on this is that Hey.

No one there thought we were over 55 so they never suggested we check out that menu.

Yeah. I'm going with that. 😑

In the end, we cruised the full twenty-one of a twenty-four hour filled day. We absolutely did chunks of it bleary eyed... but caught our second wind and just kept going.

Tomorrow, then, Laguna Beach!
