Ford v Ferrari (2019)
There’s a point at 7,000 RPM where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless. It just disappears. All that’s left, a body moving through space and time. 7,000 RPM, that’s where you meet it. You feel it coming. It creeps up near you, and it asks you a question. The only question that really matters. Who are you?

Lookingglass Theatre Company
In Collaboration with WBEZ Chicago present the World Premiere Audio Play of
Her Honor Jane Byrne
Written and Directed by Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks
Thanksgiving Day at 11am and Saturday, November 28 at 2pm
Chicago, IL–Lookingglass Theatre Company, in collaboration with WBEZ 91.5 Chicago, presents a World Premiere audio play of Her Honor Jane Byrne, written and directed by Ensemble Member and Mellon Playwright in Residence J. Nicole Brooks. Her Honor Jane Byrne will air on Chicago’s NPR news station WBEZ 91.5 FM and wbez, org on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26 from 11am-1pm CT and Saturday, November 28 from 2pm-4pm CT.
Chicago is “The City That Works”—but does it work for everybody? It’s 1981, the city’s simmering pot of neglected problems boils over, and Chicago’s first woman mayor is moving into Cabrini-Green. Is this just a P.R. stunt, or will it bring the City together? For the next three weeks, residents, activists, media, the “Machine,” and the Mayor herself will collide as the City’s raw truths are exposed. Tune in to find out who will come out on top in Lookingglass Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks’ bold new work, Her Honor Jane Byrne?
Her Honor Jane Byrne premiered on the Lookingglass stage in March 2020 just five days before the Theatre had to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lookingglass Theatre Company has partnered with WBEZ, Chicago’s National Public Radio Station, to present Her Honor Jane Byrne as a radio play.
The cast features Ensemble Members Christine Mary Dunford (Jane Byrne), Thomas J. Cox (Alderman Roti, Swibel, Photographer, Evidence Tech) and Tracy Walsh (Reporter, Kathy, Claudia) with Robert Cornelius (Black Che, Seller), Nicole Michelle Haskins (Tiger, Rival Kid), Renee Lockett (Mabel Foley), Frank Nall (O’Donnell, Jay McMullen, Daley, Spilotro), Josh Odor (Superintendent Brzcek, Tavern Owner, Bodyguard, Pilot, Host), Taron Patton (Marion Stamps), Willie “Mudlife Roc” Round (Kid, Tral).
The creative team includes Michael Huey (composer), Christopher M. LaPorte (sound designer), Artistic Associate Wendy Mateo (associate director) Jason K. Martin (dialect specialist), Sarah Burnham (production manager), Jeremy Phillips (production assistant) and Ensemble Member Philip R. Smith (casting).
“Our play joins history to myth. Some of it is dramatic interpretation, and some of it is real,” comments J. Nicole Brooks. “When you grow up in a city that’s hyper segregated, run amuck with corruption, and political stunts and discord, you have to work hard to love it. I love the city of Chicago. I love the history. I’m fascinated by ethnic clans. I’m curious about patronage, councils, aldermen, and committeemen. Who gets elected and how? Who gets to lead us, and will they actually listen to us? Though I was very little, I can remember when it was announced that Mayor Jane Byrne was moving into Cabrini-Green. Can she stop the violence? Well, no one person can. Here we are decades later, asking the same questions. I hope our audiences walk away with a bit of the past, so they may know how to shape our future.”
““It was devastating to close Her Honor Jane Byrne last Spring just after it opened.  A play takes years of work to get it to the point of production, and this play was speaking directly to our city about our city.  So we are thrilled and grateful to WBEZ for giving us a new platform to share J. Nicole Brooks’ timely and brilliant play in its new audio form,” comments Artistic Director Heidi Stillman. “Over the past months since the show closed, it’s subject matter has only become more relevant. Her Honor Jane Byrne is ambitious, timely, and an important piece of work about the way geography, race and inequality line up in Chicago – and how choices made in the past are still playing out in our city today.”
This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. The following sponsors generously supported the premiere of Her Honor Jane Byrne on the Lookingglass stage last spring: Production Sponsors—National Endowment for the Arts and Edgerton Foundation; Lead Sponsors—Melinda McMullen and Duncan Kime; Production Support—Leigh and Henry Bienen, Linda Karn, Rachel E. Kraft and Douglas R. Brown, and Abbie Roth.

Bring(ing) Home the Bacon
The Kroger’s C-Suite knows where, how, and why the bacon is made. Now, it seems like it’s their turn to bring it home. Although not completely diversified, Kroger is a large enough entity for their divisions and division chiefs to be split by region and subset. As Barney notes, traditionally, compensation is only loosely tied to economic performance (357) and may be more of an interpersonal factor between the CEO and the board of directors. It seems as though Kroger CEO, Rodney McMullen, has certainly made an impression on his board of directors.
As reported by a local news source in Cincinnati (home to Kroger HQ), McMullen made 483x more than the median pay of an Kroger employee in 2019. Other members of the c-suite shared in the $7.5million bonus payout due to the $1.1billion in savings that McMullen helmed as part of “Restock Kroger” initiative.
In previous years, Kroger has used net operating profit as it’s the “performance metric” tied to bonuses. But Kroger’s board changed that approach in 2018, in a move that boosted bonus awards. Kroger’s approach suggests that there may be some performance based metrics to be met.
It will be interesting to see how 2020 will play into the bonus structure and if any of the diversification efforts like the purchasing of Home Chef and move into ‘ghost kitchens’ will pay off dividends during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
What is the web-o-sphere angry about this week? A dog who was killed at her owner’s will, a director who doesn’t answer valid questions and a music legend who doubts Beyoncé’s icon status. Here’s everything you need to know:
A Healthy Dog Was Euthanized and Buried With Its Owner
THE STORY: A perfectly healthy pup named Emma was recently euthanized after her deceased owner left a will that explicitly instructed that the Shih Tzu be cremated and buried with her.
Emma arrived at a local animal shelter in Chesterfield County on March 8, after her owner died and stayed for about two weeks before the executor of the dead woman’s estate arrived and asked to euthanize the healthy pup.
THE REACTION:
The veterinarian that perfomed the euthanasia should lose any right to practice. It is unethical to kill a healthy animal. There was no physical suffering to alleviate. I euthanized my dog tonight (lymphoma) and this makes me furious.
— John Bolton's Intrepid Moustache (@AdamReizner) May 23, 2019
A healthy dog was euthanized bc that was the wish of the owner in her will, who recently passed. Wtf? This is disgusting. Should never have happened. The Vet tried for 2 weeks to talk the executor of the will out of it, but would have none of it.
— Steve 🇺🇲🇮🇹 NYY, NYG, Conserv, Pro-life (@sdt927) May 23, 2019
We should also euthanize people when their pets pass away, just to keep things on the level.
— Building An Empire (@Tui_Viti) May 22, 2019
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Yes, this sounds terrible. And yet, many animals die in shelters because they aren’t matched with a home. It’s shouldn’t be so hard to empathize with a dog owner who wishes for their pet to have a quick and peaceful death, rather than have their pet’s final days spent in a cage afraid and grieving the death of their human companion.
But that doesn’t seem to be the case in this situation. According to personnel at the animal shelter where Emma resided for two weeks before she was euthanized, there were other options. “We did suggest they could sign the dog over on numerous occasions,” Carrie Jones, the manager of Chesterfield Animal Services in Virginia told the Associated Press, “because it’s a dog we could easily find a home for and re-home.”
Quentin Tarantino ‘Rejects Hypothesis’ Made by Journalist About Margot Robbie
THE STORY: At the Cannes Film Festival, a female journalist asked filmmaker Quentin Tarantino why he gave so few lines to actress Margot Robbie in his highly anticipated film, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.”
“Quentin you put Margot Robbie, a very talented actress, actor, in your film,” the New York Times journalist asked Tarantino during a press conference. Robbie plays the actress Sharon Tate, an actress who was murdered by the Manson clan in 1969.
“This is a person with great acting talent and yet you haven’t given her many lines in the movie,” she continued. “I guess that was a deliberate choice on your part. And I just wanted to know why that was that we don’t hear her speak that much.”
Tarantino, the film’s writer and director, responded: “Well, I just reject your hypothesis.”
THE REACTION:
Can we just stop for a moment to praise Margot Robbie for remaining professional and answering the reporter’s question. What could have been an interesting discussion of female characters in Tarantino films ended up with the director sulking because he didn’t like the question https://t.co/r8M5dBGpG2
— Bee Garner 🐝 (@cinebee2) May 23, 2019
Like, Tarantino has made some good movies and some bad movies but why even pretend like he gives a shit about female characters?
— Carmen Maria Machado (@carmenmmachado) May 22, 2019
hey male writers/filmmakers! maybe don’t treat your female characters like shit then refuse to hear any valid criticism about it!! how about that?? anyway tarantino is unprofessional and misogynistic, wHo KnEw RiGhT?
— karina✌🏻 (@kinaleighmac) May 23, 2019
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: As many on Twitter were quick to note, some of Tarantino’s most iconic characters are women. However, Jackie Brown and the Kill Bill volumes don’t necessarily give the director a free pass at being curt and unprofessional with a journalist who, in doing her job, asked a very valid question. The job of explaining the character should fall on the writer, but that job instead landed on Margot Robbie, who gave a thoughtful and reasoned response to the journalist’s question.
Dionne Warwick Doubts Beyoncé’s Status as an Icon
THE STORY: Legendary singer and actress Dionne Warwick recently spoke about her admiration for Beyoncé. “Watching her growth has been quite refreshing. It’s wonderful to see how she’s been able to create what and who she wanted to be and who she is…” she told Essence, “very proud of that, I really am.” She also, however, said that she doubts Queen Bey’s career will hold up against those like Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, and Frank Sinatra. She reasoned that such a legacy is quite simply a “long row to hoe.”
THE REACTION:
That fossil Dionne Warwick should have just sat in her old age chair, instead she is coming for Beyoncé pic.twitter.com/THNzXvEkyb
— Karabo (@Karabo__p) May 23, 2019
Dionne Warwick ain’t even an icon the bitch is just old 💀🤧 https://t.co/6nrIFI2CR0
— duke (@red0rum) May 23, 2019
You have a short road ahead, stay in your god damn lane
— Jay McMullen (@JayGMcMullen) May 23, 2019
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Dionne Warwick is a legend. The 78-year-old “Walk on By” singer has more hits than most artists have records. So it’s with the utmost respect I say this: age and longevity are not the only two criteria that indicate iconicity. Beyoncé has made substantial contributions both to music and culture, and she likely will continue to do so until she is Warwick’s age.

Paramount Theatre is excited to tune up for its rollicking 2017-18 Broadway Series opener Million Dollar Quartet, the wildly popular rock and roll musical that played more than 2,500 performances in Chicago.

Behind the scenes: Paramount’s Million Dollar Quartet
There was no plan for Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins to record together on December 4, 1956. But as fate would have it, their impromptu jam session left behind a historic and mind-blowing album. The evening begins in the Sun Records recording studio in Memphis. Up and comer Jerry Lee Lewis is recording songs with rockabilly king Carl Perkins when the iconic Elvis Presley stops by with his girlfriend. The not-quite-yet-guitar-god Johnny Cash is there to pay a visit to music manager Sam Phillips. Throw them all together, and you have one of the most unexpected, unprecedented and unforgettable musical moments in history. It was the first and only time they played together and, through their musical genius, created an explosive album that has yet to be matched.
Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux wrote the book for Million Dollar Quartet based on Mutrux’s original concept and direction. The Chicago production ran from 2008 to 2016 and became the third longest-running show in Chicago theater history. Critics called it “the most exuberant theatrical event,” “dazzling from first beat to last” and “the best live rock ‘n’ roll show I have ever seen.”
Fast forward to the kick off of Chicago’s 2017-18 theater season, featuring Paramount’s talented lead cast for Million Dollar Quartet. Adam Wesley Brown (Jerry Lee Lewis) played Eamon in Once on Broadway, has numerous regional credits and has been seen on local stages including Lookingglass and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. Kavan Hashemian (Elvis Presley) began performing his Elvis tribute at age three. Today he performs all over the world, including in London where he won the title of “The World’s #1 Rock N Roll Elvis” on BBC-TV. Gavin Rohrer (Jerry Lee Lewis) is fresh from playing the role at Lyric Theatre in Oklahoma City, where Broadwayworld.com raved “his piano skills are unrivaled, and his brash certainty provides some of the funniest moments of the night.” Bill Scott Sheets (Johnny Cash) just played the “Man in Black” at Berkshire Theatre Group in Massachusetts. Berkshire Fine Arts wrote “particularly strong was Bill Sheets, whose voice and delivery were sublime.”
“Icons Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash were southern, rockabilly country boys before they were discovered by Sam Phillips, the young, upstart record producer and owner of Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Their purely by chance meeting for the first and only time on Dec. 4, 1956, is a seminal moment in the birth of Rock ‘N’ Roll,” said Paramount Artistic Director Jim Corti.
“The show, exploring the connections of these four to their music and each other, is full of intriguing surprises and is not only a fascinating, short history but a full scale, no holds barred, in-your-face jam session of the kind of music that grabbed hold of our youth culture back then and hasn’t let go ever since,” Corti added. “From our Chicago and national talent pool, we’ve assembled a dynamite cast; you won’t believe your eyes and ears! There’ll be a whole lot of shakin’ goin’ on, all live, all on the Paramount stage, all made in Aurora!”
Jim Corti (director) was hired in 2011 to be the first-ever artistic director in the Paramount’s 80+ year history. He was instrumental in launching Paramount’s inaugural Broadway Series and directed and choreographed Paramount’s first self-produced Broadway Series show My Fair Lady, which played to rave reviews. Corti’s 2013 Paramount production of Fiddler on the Roof was a smash hit, and his Miss Saigonwas the only musical to make the Chicago Tribune’s Top Ten Shows of 2013. Rent in 2014 was a critical and box office success, followed by consecutive productions of The Who’s Tommy and Les Misérables, which collectively garnered five Jeff Awards for Paramount in its first year of eligibility, including Best Production – Musical – Large for Les Misérables and Best Director – Musical for Corti. He also staged Paramount’s 2015-16 opener Oklahoma! and closer West Side Story, Paramount’s second-consecutive Jeff Award winning Best Musical. Last season, Corti directed memorable productions of Mamma Mia! and Sweeney Todd. Before Paramount, Corti was a seasoned Broadway veteran, appearing in the New York casts of Ragtime, A Chorus Line and Candide and national tours of Urinetown, Cabaret and Bob Fosse’s Dancin’. Career highlights over three decades include being the only director in Chicago to have two productions at the same time in theChicago Tribune’s list of 10 Best Shows in 2009 – Drury Lane’s Cabaret and Writers Theatre’s Oh, Coward!. He remains the sole honoree to have garnered a Jeff Award as an actor (in Marriott’s Grand Hotel), a choreographer (Drury Lane’s Singin’ in the Rain) and director (Paramount’s Les Misérables, Drury Lane’sSweet Charity and Northlight’s Blues in the Night).
Kory Danielson (music director) is coming back for his 11th consecutive musical at the Paramount, after serving as co-music director and associate conductor with Tom Vendafreddo on Jesus Christ Superstar, and assistant music director and associate conductor for Sweeney Todd-The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Mamma Mia!, West Side Story, Hairspray – The Broadway Musical, A Christmas Story – The Musical, Oklahoma!, Les Misérables and The Who’s Tommy. About the Paramount Theatre
The Paramount Theatre (ParamountAurora.com) is the center for performing arts, entertainment and arts education in Aurora, the second largest city in Illinois. Named “One of Chicago’s Top 10 Attended Theatres” by the League of Chicago Theatres, the 1,888-seat Paramount, located in downtown Aurora at23 E. Galena Blvd., is nationally renowned for the quality and caliber of its presentations, superb acoustics and historic beauty.
The Paramount opened on September 3, 1931. Designed by renowned theater architects C.W. and George L. Rapp, the theater captures a unique Venetian setting with a 1930s art deco influence. The first air-conditioned building outside of Chicago, the Paramount offered a variety of entertainment, including “talking pictures,” vaudeville, concerts and circus performances for over 40 years. In 1976, the Aurora Civic Center Authority (ACCA) purchased the Paramount, closed the theater for restoration and returned the Paramount to its original grandeur. The Paramount Arts Centre reopened in 1978, offering a variety of theatrical, musical, comedy, dance and family programming. In 2006, a 12,000-square-foot, two-story Grand Gallery lobby was added, with a new, state-of-the-art box office, café and art gallery.
Today, the Paramount self-produces its own Broadway Series, presents an eclectic array of comedy, music, dance and family shows, and on most Mondays, screens a classic movie.
The Paramount Theatre is one of three live performance venues programmed and managed by the ACCA, which also oversees the Paramount’s “sister” stage, the intimate, 173-seat Copley Theatre located directly across the street from the Paramount at 8 E. Galena Blvd., as well as RiverEdge Park, downtown Aurora’s summer outdoor concert venue.
The Paramount Theatre continues to expand its artistic and institutional boundaries under the guidance of Tim Rater, President and CEO, Aurora Civic Center Authority; Jim Corti, Artistic Director, Paramount Theatre; a dedicated Board of Trustees and a devoted staff of live theatre and music professionals. The Tour marked theNice outrage with respect, and then moved on. It is ‘only’ a bike race. But my favorite uni sets from the 1908s were the home whites: a gorgeous, block lettered wordmark across the chest? Yes please. cheap jerseys
