fic masterpost
yeah i do have other marvel fics on my ao3 but some of them i wrote in high school also some of them i don't vibe with anymore
note that some of these are from a while ago! my perceptions and takes on characters change and grow, so if i wrote something, sometimes i won't agree with the characterization later. keep that in mind.
on that note: many of the old fics name Xuân as Xuyen, bc that was the fanmade actually-Vietnamese alternative to Xi'an before her name was changed in canon.
Family Colors (2018): 1,679 words. Standalone (there used to be a second chapter but I didn't like it so I got rid of it). Gen, Kamala-centric, Civil War II era. To whom do the Captain Marvel colors belong?
cloudburst (2019): 423 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. ever wake up to a thunderstorm?
Retail Therapy (2020): 1,209 words. Standalone. James Proudstar/Terry Cassidy. Early-krakoa era -- I wrote this just a bit after krakoa became A Thing, when we didn't know what had recently happened with more minor characters like terry. also i think they're very cute.
Morning Song (2020): 955 words. Standalone. James Proudstar/Terry Cassidy. idk I think Jimmy would like cooking.
if you don't mind me saying so (i love you) (2020): 25,423 words. Part 1 of "love like fools." Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. my funny little fake dating indulgence. the epitome of "I wrote it for me but you can read it if you want" (as so many of my works are). i haven't actually reread this one i have no idea if it's good or not. but it sure exists.
Days Off (2020): 1,523 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Sam wakes up sick and Roberto tries to help.
sunlight (2020): 2,090 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Seasonal affective disorder strikes Roberto.
the whole 'not being dead' thing (2020): 1,094 words. Standalone. Gen. Early-krakoa era. Jay is resurrected and catches up with his new nephew.
Winner Takes All (2020): 2,006 words. Two chapters (so far. might fuck around and add another chapter idk). Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Utopia-era. sparring and unsaid feelings and also Doug's new ability to read body language.
i don't want to spend my life (without your kiss goodnight) (2020): 1,702 words. Rated M for non-explicit making out. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. the world has not ended so obviously let's party
my home in you (2020): 2,122 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. patching up the other's wounds.
The Meaning of Family (2021): 10,926 words. Standalone. Gen. Ruth-centric. Ruth bonds with her family -- because she does have family, and no x man is truly ever alone. Also, possibly, she might kill someone in the future.
live our life like we know we could (ONGOING/HIATUS): 22,300 words. Part 2 of "love like fools." Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Post mission, post reveal, navigating uncharted relationship waters.
in the name of the moon! (2022): 4,382 words. Standalone. Gen (though it's tagged as Sam/Roberto, and you can certainly read it like that if you want, but that's not the focus). Sam textile artist real To Me. also: halloween and sailor moon.
i mean every word i say (2023): 1,559 words. Rated T for mention of sex. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Sam's been keeping secrets, and that makes Roberto nervous.
we will never be forgotten (2023): 2,689 words. Standalone. Sam Guthrie/Roberto da Costa. Roberto gets mindwiped, knocked out, and a visitor in the infirmary (in that order).
you're never gonna get a second take (2023): 2,166 words. Standalone. Dani Moonstar/Xuân Cao Mạnh. don't you just love those undercover missions where they have to dress in fancy clothes? yeah so does xuân
nothing holds me back at all (2023): 1,461 words. Part 1 of "the memories that make us." Gen. Dani-centric. Dani rides a horse for the first time (with her father's help).
you can never take this part of me (2023): 1,691 words. Part 2 of "the memories that make us." Gen. Sam-centric. Sam goes fishing with his dad and his gaggle of younger siblings.
~~~
works in progress (that I'm posting to hold myself accountable so I actually finish them someday):
- the rest of "the memories that make us" (i.e. the other 13 parts, one for each of the original nine and the six academy x era students. all of it is me practicing writing kids)
- king/lionheart Sam/Roberto medieval au. even tho I hate royalty the aesthetics kind of slam
- megafic (62 chapters planned! six tie ins! almost fully canon compliant all the way up to war of realms!) the ties that bind & related works wrt the better endings au
- rewriting document of high school fics (mostly samberto. I'm more or less a one trick pony)
- several shorter smaller things that I just have to work up the courage to post (including practice with NSFW writing)
- not a fanfiction: but my long ass academic paper (fully cited) that talks about the mutant metaphor and the actual minorities within the x men and my huge large spreadsheet that goes with it.
Who is....Jay Guthrie | Icarus? - A Reading Guide
Tumblr media
Joshua "Jay" Guthrie is an X-Men affiliated mutant from Marvel Comics first introduced in 1984. Jay is the younger brother of Sam and Paige Guthrie, and the older brother of Melody Guthrie. Despite being part of the New X-Men during the Academy X era, Jay is most known for being part of the Guthrie family, as he has a number of appearances with them prior to attending the Xavier Institute and his family/home drive many of his motivations and choices. Jay has bright red feathered wings, a healing factor, and can harmonize with himself when he sings.
Jay's story deals very heavily with grief and suicide, if you're sensitive to those topics please keep that in mind before you continue the reading list.
Reading list under the cut!
Family Matters
These issues give us a look at Jay's experiences at home and his relationship with his family (largely focusing on the parentification of him and his older brother Sam). Later issues in this section also touch on grief and suicide.
Rom (1979) #Annual 3 New Mutants (1983) #42 X-Force (1991) #32, 36 X-Men (1991) #36 Uncanny X-Men '95 (1995) #1 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #437-441
Academy X
After the horrifying events of Uncanny X-Men #437-441, Jay is brought by his mother to the Xavier institute against his will. Things get....bad for Jay and the family Guthrie, ultimately resulting in Jay's death and yet another disappointing but yet completely expected parenting fail from Lucinda Guthrie.
X-Men (1991) #157-159 Uncanny X-Men (1981) #444 New X-Men (2004) #1-6 X-Men Unlimited (2004) #3B X-Men (1991) #162, 164-165 New X-Men (2004) #7-9, 12-15 New X-Men Yearbook Special (2005) #1 New X-Men (2004) #20-28, 32* *this is Jay's funeral and Lucinda speaks to his classmates...though remarkably little about what she says is actually about Jay
Krakoa
Jay was brought back to life on the mutant island of Krakoa where he..... doesn't really do a whole lot.....
X-Men (2019) #7 X-Force (2019) #32 X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic (2021) #101 (Jay's only in one panel but it gives us SOMETHING about what he's up to on Krakoa) X-Men: Before the Fall - Mutant First Strike (2023) #1 (again, Jay's only in one panel, but i's SOMETHING)
The Guthrie family is funny because 3 of the 9 (?) can fly:
Sam (and his son) can fly by blasting off
Jay has wings
Melody can just propel herself through the air
Whereas the other 6 have a completely unrelated power or don't have powers at all:
Paige tears her skin to reveal a new form underneath
Jeb shoots lightning from his eyes
Elizabeth didn't have powers but it's assumed based on her age of apocalypse variant that she does/could have them (her aoa self could increase her size)
Joelle didn't have powers (and this led her to join a hate group, she realized her error)
Lewis had a mutation but it wasn't natural (it also killed him)
Not much was ever said about Cissie but she didn't have powers as far as anyone could tell
Moment of Awesome - Jay Guthrie/Icarus: When Namor happens upon a fishing Jay, the interaction takes a number of turns, before the younger man offers an ear to the ancient royal. Even if part of him believes the man to be a ghost.
Jay turned slightly to look at the wet figure behind him- no monster, but Jay wasn't going to rule out the man being some sort of spectre. He was surprised to notice the small, hummingbird like wings on the man's ankles. Ever since he'd gotten his wings he hadn't been one much for submerging himself. Then again, there was waterfowl.
Maybe this man was more like a duck.
Jay glared at him slightly as his heart slowed down. "You got me pretty damn good," he said to the figure. "And that's a shame about the bass."
Namor stopped, turned, and squinted. "Never doubt that I do everything 'pretty damn good.'" He took a swig of water. "There is more pleasant fishing on the other side of the lake — a healthy stock of perch." He stretched his arms wide, seemingly unbothered by being wet in the chilly March air.
Jay's politeness got the better of him, now that he was willing to rule the figure out as a ghost after watching him drink. "Well, I'll be taking that advice if'n you'd like to join," he figured it would be a no and kicked off. Why walk all the way around the lake when he could fly there in a shorter path?
This got a stare. "You," and the incredulity in the Atlantean's tone was so plain as he squared his shoulders that he might as well have been pointy, "Clearly understand nothing of Namor." His eyes blazed with pride for just a moment, but then, "I have not been fishing in 5,000 years."
Maybe Jay had judged this Namor as not being a spectre too soon. He didn't sound like he was exaggerating when he said 5,000 years. "You want to be joining in then?" He asked, not letting himself be put off by this self important man's attitude, especially when he sensed just a hint of sadness in his last statement.
The full weight of inhuman ice blue's eyes fell upon Jay Guthrie as the young man received his full appraisal. Whatever they found, Namor answered, "We accept your invitation. It should be diverting, at the least." He nodded. "What is your weapon of choice? Simple hook and line?"
"Well, I don't got a net for trawling and I never liked folks who shoot at the fish," Jay said as he began to fly to the other side of the lake, following Namor's knowledge of it. It also gave him an excuse to turn away from the man. That stare gave him the heebie-jeebies something fierce.
The other, muscled man took a minute to retrieve his water bottle from the dock, although he didn't follow immediately after. He had retreated back up to the boathouse itself, grabbing an item. Still, his voice echoed across the water to Jay in questioning disbelief.
"They do what to the fish?"
"Shoot at 'em," Jay called back, gesturing as if he held a shot gun in his arms. "Bam! Just overkill I think."
The Atlantean was there, then, crossing the lake on his own flight — movements quick and jerky compared to Jay's own soaring. A man stepping on air between hovers. His wings blurred in motion. "Typical," Namor judged, "Mankind loves to show power when it is least needed." He had fetched, it seemed, both a practice spear and an old, unloved fishing pole.
Namor darted forward, if only to be just a breath in the lead. "The joy is in the hunt, not the kill. Foolish."
Jay watched the other man fly, hummingbird-like and urgent, like he had to get wherever he was going yesterday. He observed Namor's fishing gear- he hadn't even thought of spear fishing. Jay wasn't sure he had ever met anyone who spear-fished. Then again, if this man was some sort of ghostie like he had expected, why wouldn't he? Wasn't that something they'd done before fishing poles?
Just how old was this guy?
Jay landed into a walk, setting his own fishing gear about. "My joy's always been in the atmosphere and the wait, but to each his own. I agree with you about the power thing though. No need for it."
I wanted to stretch my character design muscles and draw all the x-men’s blonde ladies since they are famously hard to differentiate, but it turns out a good chunk of that list is Guthries. Fortunately, designing siblings is also a fun character design challenge.
This ended up involving quite a bit of headcanoning because this family is a mess, so I’m gonna explain them all below the cut.
Sam was very easy, he’s even the one Guthrie kid with a clear birth order as the canonical Eldest. I mainly just wanted to capture his New Mutant’s design with his less gangly modern look.
Paige was the only Guthrie I’d drawn before, so I just used the drawing of her from the Gen X line-up I did forever ago. She’s been called out as the second eldest before,
-but Elizabeth has been mentioned to be specifically older than Paige. In the end I decided to commit to neither option and make them twins who constantly argue over who was born first. My friend swayed me that she should be trans given the whole hormone based power thing, so I ended up having to switch her from identical to fraternal at the last minute.
Jay’s order in line has never been clear, but he’s usually drawn as among the older group so here he is. I found a panel where he had a cute cowlick and liked how it seemed like he had a kinda bird-like nose, so that was most of the thought in his design.
Joelle’s one spotlight moment is joining an anti-mutant hate group because she was jealous that all her siblings were more special than her, which is a very middle child move of her so she’s right in the middle. I decided to play up how similar she looks to Melody, just to add even more reason she’d rebel like that.
Melody was very easy, her age was never specified but given that her age varies from quite young to being in the highschool group, I figured it was safe to put her on the older end of the younger half of the family.
A big problem with plotting out the whole Guthrie family is that Sam’s said there’s 10 Guthrie kids with him included, but only 9 have been named on page. Which seems like it has a pretty easy solution if you just include Ray Holder Jr because Sam considers his Mom’s boyfriend’s son a sibling in his count. I mean, that’s something that happens in the real world. Plus, kid died so I think he deserves it.
Jeb’s design has been all over the place. Does he have glasses? Does he have freckles? Is his hair strawberry blonde, red, or brown? I’m committing to glasses, freckles, and blonde hair just because I figure that makes him the most distinct. At least he’s pretty easy to place as closest in age to Ray and not the youngest.
Lewis and Cissie Guthrie are the two youngest and twins. I’d argue they're even more trans-coded than Liz, given that they're identical but different genders. The only interesting thing either have done is that Lewis got injected with necrotized DNA by the Dark Beast once and nearly died, so he gets to keep some scars from that to give him something to visually stick to.
thinking about these panels in She Lies With Angels and how Julia describes Jay's singing and his voice, and I'm only realizing now that, even if her narration may lead you to believe he's belting out some Ave Maria-esque ballad, he's probably just singing sad country songs.
(I know SLwA describes Jay as a "Rock 'n' Roll Hearthrob," but it just makes more sense to me that he'd be singing country songs, given where and how he grew up.)
