Meta Prison Blues

Crash Jaxun didn't like prison.

He didn't mind most of it, of course. Clothing had never been comfortable, so he didn't care what he wore (he could feel every inch of where it touched his skin, the texture a constant irritant he couldn't really get rid of). Food was hit-or-miss, but he'd noticed he didn't seemed to need it here so he often just didn't eat it, preferring instead to play with it. The texture was nice.

But just being in there made his head buzz. Without Butch, his thoughts flew and tripped and tumbled over themselves always going, going, going. Butch couldn't make the thoughts stop, of course, but his steady presence had helped Crash keep them in order, figure out which ones were important and which ones were just noise. Without Butch, people were enigmas behind masks; he'd gotten better at telling what his friends were feeling, of course - he'd known them longer - but even then he missed things. Strangers did things with their eyes and mouth and nose and he didn't know what those things meant.

He missed Butch.

Ten, twenty, thirty, a hundred times a day he'd reach out for that steady presence at the back of his mind and instead encounter a buzzing emptiness the buzzing like that of a phone left too long off the hook. He didn't care that he couldn't punch through walls or soak up the damage and never mind about it - there didn't seem much point to it all, here - but the emptiness ate at him.

The routine helped, a little. Every morning after lights on he would go to the bathroom and do his business, wash his hands, wash his face, and rinse his teeth. Every third day he would shower. After that he would go and work with the paste, which was distributed three times a day at exactly equidistant intervals. He liked that. Knowing exactly what to do and when to do it made his head a little quieter.

Talking helped too, though nobody else seemed to appreciate it. He'd spent the first few weeks talking to everyone about everything. Except the Secrets, of course, he had to keep those trapped behind his teeth, but every other thought had coming spilling out to whoever was willing to listen. The third week in he'd gotten punched by the person he was talking to. It had hurt. He hadn't seen it coming.

He didn't talk so much after that.

Sometimes at night - when the lights were out, anyway - and everything was happening too much, he'd quietly get up and strip down and sit with his back to the wall. The texture of the walls and floor wasn't as bad as the textures of the cloth, and he'd usually have a tube or two of paste that he could do what he liked with. Squeezing it was best, feeling it move slowly between his fingers before he balled it up and did it over and over again until just before lights on, when he had to scramble to get his clothes back on.

It was hard. Prison was hard. Still, he had the feeling that this was where he needed to be. Nothing near as good as his dad, of course - his dad had told him so, right before making it a Secret that he couldn't tell anyone - but he'd had those feelings before and they'd usually turned out for the best.

So he endured, waiting for the chance he knew was coming. Crash knew, in a way he couldn't say even to himself, that there was something necessary here and that they needed it before they could leave.

He just hoped it came soon.
