how i think the amazing digital circus characters would respond if you asked them to buy pads

before i go do smth else like smth i think abt often but was thinking abt a few hrs ago in particular is how the circus easily tricks the audience into thinking the circus would be Better Than Real Life. when i think from literally almost any angle you examine it its just as bad (if not worse, depending on your own problems)

i think theres like so many problems its hard to even list them all. some of it is personal taste things. cus i think a lot of people think itd be fun because they enjoy specific aesthetic choices in the circus, or bc of other interest related things. but like. what about people who HATE bright colors. what about people who dont like the idea of not being human. what about people who dont enjoy things like roleplaying. some aspects of the circus are only even appealing to specific tastes in things, making one of the few 'draws' of it not really even being a universal thing

and thats the superficial stuff. because more importantly, if you dont like the real world (for whatever reason), the circus may provide a temporary solution to that, because its so far removed from reality. but i think the circus is way smaller than people realize. theres definitely always going to be things to see since caine can always make things, but its just as limited if not more than the real world, because while the world grows and changes, genuinely new things are created and discovered and stuff. caine will never really get to see that, let alone recreate it for the players- and even then, it still isnt actually that thing. that doesnt even factor in that caine is already operating on limited knowledge of the real world. its not clear how detailed he can get on things, since the accuracy can vary (spudsys being so accurate to the real world, vs the dinner in ep 1 being so flat and lacking almost any detail), but theres a good chance that anything he makes is going to be limited to, at the most, a CONCEPT from the real world, if theres nothing in the real world you like, thats still all youll get, just in a different way.and if you DO like things from the real world, youll never get to truly reexperience it (even if caine remakes it, youll know its not the real thing, and it wont be 100% how you remember it, either)

then theres the safety/pain/horror aspect to what caine makes. i think because there hasnt been gore or anything its easy to assume the circus is still tame, and that anything bad that happens cant be TOO bad. but this is NOT true at all. the teaser of the show establishes that even when caine is not going for horror, he still hurts the players. theres things thatd be physically horrifying to a person like getting possessed, theres physical pain (i see it debated but i think its clear that even if they were to experience less pain, they still DO experience pain, but thats a different topic) or extreme discomfort, theres psychological torment (the exit doors are genuinely very cruel even if that wasnt caines goal, what ep 4 did to jax and gangle. kinger getting taunted in ep 3, etc). its all survivable but even if you like them caine isnt trustworthy enough in this way to never do smth horrific to a person, or cause it through his actions

then theres the complete lack of autonomy, which imo is one of the most frightening things about the circus. bc unless your tastes are always aligning with the exciting, completely family friendly existence of the circus, and you never deviate even a little, you are going to be barred from any semblance of it. its best illustrated in how pomni HATES being touched but caines always prodding her and moving her places and stuff, and in how zooble is denied the option to opt out of adventures even when they state they want to directly by episode 4 implying the choice to even have time to yourself is deeply conditional (plus, the whole lack of an exit entirely meaning that even if you liked the circus, the lack of option to leave would still affect a person. youre getting locked in a big room for the rest of time and youll never get to leave). and also this post

and THEN you factor in the social aspect. because regardless of how you prefer socializing if at all, the circus is a nightmare. if you dont like people, thats great! you dont NEED to be anyones friend! except that you are going to be forced to interact with them eventually, and when you do its going to be repeated. its not gonna be once. and once caine notices hes going to bother you about it. forever

alternatively, if you DO like social interactions in any way, no matter what, if its not you, youre going to see others abstract. you are going to inevitably watch those you care abt struggle and eventually get stuck in a state that Seems Extremely Horrifying To Experience forever. its long and drawn out and itd suck and it wouldnt happen once

then is the easy to forget fact that if you have psychological problems they can and WILL follow you to the circus. gangle and zooble are the biggest examples of this. the circus didnt get rid of their problems, they just gave it a new, horrifying inevitable consequence. i sometimes fall victim to looking at the circus and assuming that ohhh i wouldnt have this problem! because i wont have to deal w it getting set off! but like... yeah i would. i wouldnt stop having this or that in the circus id just have to deal w it while ALSO going on adventures

theres many things. you cant truly eat you cant die you dont get to decide anything when you do die it seems terrifying to experience and youll be stuck in some level of that forever and anything you enjoy is not with you and anything you dont enjoy will follow you too to some degree and the list goes on and on

all this said i dont think any of this is an indicator that the characters lives are meaningless or smth just because it sucks. theres a reason gooseworx has said that the takeaway from the show should be that theres meaning to be found in a stagnant life. theres still meaning in their existence and i dont think its as hopeless as it may seem- but i think its still BAD. and tbh the idea that its worse only HELPS that theme of the show!!! i dont think itd hit as hard as a theme if the circus DIDNT suck

The amount of SEETHING HATE I have seen people give ragatha for slipping up once while defending Jax to hell and back even though he's an ACTUAL bully to Gangle for the entire series. Ya'll would NOT get along with Jax irl. Stop pretending like it because you think his design or think Michael Korvach's voice is hot

Really bothering me that people are calling Ragatha toxic, fake or abusive when in reality she is just a traumatized people pleaser who has her fair share of flaws, but in the end is not a bad person. She's trying, and she clearly does care about the others, even if there is also an element of fear she has that they won't like her if she doesn't act nice enough.

Ragatha isn't even in my top three favourites of the cast. But it bothers me how shallow and unnuanced some people are being about her character. I love Jax and his character is so rich and interesting to me, but I can still blatantly acknowledge he's done some pretty nasty things, and gets defended too heavily because of a few softer moments. Yet Ragatha has a few moments where she acts out (PAIRED with context that she's experienced emotional abuse her whole life) and all of a sudden she's the fandom's punching bag? It's so weird to me. Double standards. Kind of reminds me of the Gangle hate we got post episode four, but worse.

— when you first started dating jax, you didn't know what to expect. would he secretly be a huge romantic? would he continue to act the same?

— luckily for you, you got a mixture of both!

— jax is the type where, when he's around the others, he'll treat you like how he did before you both started dating. he'd pull pranks on you, make idiotic remarks, etc. despite the fact everyone knows you're both dating, he doesn't want the others to think he has a "soft spot" for someone.

— even though it's fairly obvious he has a soft spot for you. while he does treat you like how he used to before, everyone noticed how his pranks were slightly lighter and smaller, and his stupid remarks were filled with more playful taunts rather than his usual provoking ways.

— now, when referring to how you got a mixture of both, that also means jax has a romantic side.

— who knew? certainly not you.

— he isn't the flashy type, but he's the type that does small stuff that speaks volumes.

— he's the type to notice the small things. he'll note in his head how you react to certain things like conversation topics, and he'll start asking you about those topics just to see you get all excited.

— will he call you a nerd if you know a lot about that topic? yes, but he doesn't mean it in a mean way.

— that's also another thing. all of those nicknames he called you suddenly have a flirty tone to them.

— his favorite thing to call you? doll.

— and he knows it's you're favorite, too, so he will be teasing you with it every chance he gets.

"jax, what did i tell you about going into my room without permission?" your question was only met with jax's smirk as he shrugged, "i don't know. what did you tell me, doll?" before you could speak, your mind comprehended his words, and your lips slightly pursed as you stared at him in silence. you knew what he was trying to do by calling you that, but despite the fact you were aware of his game, you didn't call him out on it. the rabbit's smirk only grew as he took a step closer to you, and he leaned down by your ear. "what's wrong, doll? somethin' on your mind?" "die." "fiesty..." he grinned before straightening his back, and you only turned around and walked away from him in irritation.

— he loves irritating you, but only because that means later on, he gets to sneak into your room to "apologize" to you.

— he doesn't apologize. he just wanted an excuse to go into your room.

— why does he want to be in your room? because it means he gets to be with you without the eyes of all the other members being on you both.

— now, while he acts all cocky when everyone else is around, that act fades a bit when he's in your room. he's quieter as he gets on your bed and settles himself near your side.

— he would be the little spoon when you both cuddled. sometimes he'd like to hold you, but most of the time, it's nice for him to just be held as he gets to relax with you.

— he will tease you with the different outfits he gets during adventures.

— usually, his outfits stay the same, but he notices the way you look at him a little bit more when it changes, especially when he was in that suit at the bar.

— he saw you eyeing him, and he wouldn't stop teasing you.

"like what you see, doll?" you only rolled your eyes at his words as you fidgeted with the glass in front of you—swiping your finger across the top of the glass while jax placed his elbow on the counter and leaned against his palm. "you didn't deny it..." "be quiet." you mumbled, and jax only grinned. "make me, dollface." the others were too busy facing ragatha as she talked about something, so you took the opportunity to grasp his tie before pulling him close. the action slightly caught him off guard as a light flush sprawled across his face, yet his smirk never dropped. "just admit you like how i look in this outfit." you only paused for a moment before tugging his tie closer, and you placed a quick kiss against his cheek. a dazed expression crossed his face as he stared down at you, and he tilted his head. "that works, too..."

— the only time you admitted you liked his outfit was when he got put in a maid costume.

"i definitely like what i see..." you teased as jax's face only flushed more, and he slightly glared at you. "shut.up." "what? you look good! do a spin for me—" "shut the f*#$ up."

— jax would then proceed to pounce at you right then and there.

— did he hurt you? no, it was something that he would never do, but he did shake you a little bit while griping about how you betrayed him by voting for the maid outfit to be put on him.

— finally, he would always make comments about how he was your boyfriend, and he would do it just because he likes the idea of him being your boyfriend.

— you're going to your room? he should go with you since he was your boyfriend. you were going to go ask caine something? he should go with you since he was your boyfriend. you were going to take a small step away with him so you had some space in your bubble? he would take multiple steps towards you and invade your bubble because he was your boyfriend.

— he liked the idea of him being your boyfriend, even if it was in the digital world.

a complication of general & relationship jax headcanons

↳ before you read: lowercase intended, gn reader, written after ep 5 - before ep 6, ooc jax (?), terribly rushed, not proff read.

first of all; this guy is a massive jerk, he knows it, you know it, we all know it and it's a fact. nobody really likes him besides perhaps pomni, everyone else tolerates him; 'cause what can they do about his antics?

let's not forget about the fact that he has keys to everyone's room, he pranked everyone at least once. i'd like to say that he pranked ragatha and gangle the most. kinger is the one whom jax pranks the least.

he secretly cares about everyone, as i said before he has the keys to everyone's room, he has them not only for his stupid pranks but for emergencies as well. he was once too late to help his friend ribbit (the character that we saw on the door in ep5) and couldn't get to open the door. imagine you couldn't help the only person who truly cared for you in this forsaken cirsus. imagine knowing that they're getting abstracted on the other side of the door and you can't do anything about it.

build his walls up high, if you were to break them to see the true him it'd take a while. he hides his insecurities and problems behind his obnoxious personality, yet deep down he wants to be heard. he wants to be comforted but he wouldn't take the comfort well, generally would be really awkward about it.

despises crying in front of anyone, despises voicing his needs, despises talking about his past life in a serious manner, despites being ignored even though everyone is telling each other to just "ignore him".

canonically he's the youngest in the cirsus; he's twenty-two (22) so theoretically he had it the worst as he had the whole life ahead of him just for it to be taken away in the blink of an eye. he could've start his own business, start a family, explore the world and so much more, but again everyone in the cirsus had to experience the shock of the new world, new body, new name and the unfortunate memory loss.

in the real world he'd listen to msi, have black nails and be the type of person to work night shifts. :p

he journals to keep his sanity!! tried to keep track of the days trapped in the cirsus but lost track after a few months. at first he used to journal everyday but he rarely writes anything in it these days, but when it does you bet he'll write out like 3 pages. has a small list of what everyone is startled by and a small list of all of caine's adventures.

he is really expressive, his ears show his emotions really well and he gestures with his hands all the time when he talks, often exaggerating everything. body language can tell you everything!!

him catching feelings for someone in the cirsus would be extremely rare as he really doesn't take the digital world seriously, but it is possible; a really really slow slow burn. now he wouldn't even realize when he caught feelings for you, it just slowly progressed into something more than friends.

I like to think that the moment he realized he had a crush on you is when he was journaling and started writing about you, a lot about you or someone like ragatha or zooble point his obvious different behaviour when it comes to you.

its subtle but it's there: the way his voice slightly softens when talking to you, the way he always soughts to be at your side, the way he's staring at you from across the room, the way his pranks are even more harmless, the way he doesn't actually walk into your room and makes obvious loud noises to signal that he's here; he wouldn't knock though.

jax's love language is quality time and acts of service. he is very observant, he already knows you will need something before you do.

terrible at giving affection, even worse at receiving it. PDA is a no no for him unless he is the one who initiates it. please don't hug him out of the blue in front of the others, poor boy will be so awkward and flushed. HOWEVER he loves giving you suprise kisses, hugging you from behind, silently telling everyone you're his. and he is yours.

A TEASE, talks big but if you tease him back? he might actually explode.

twirling strands of your hair around his fingers, playing with the hem of your clothes, a hand on your waist, on your back is how he expresses his affection and love for you. further into the relationship he'll get more comfortable with bigger acts of affection like hugging and kissing.

actually goes crazy over how you see him, it was the worst in the crushing state. he doesn't want you thinking badly of him, he doesn't want you listening to others how terrible he is. his mood WILL change whenever you're mad at him. he will try to apologize in his own way, acting like its not that big of a deal in front of you knowing damn well he couldn't sleep because of it and sweated his ass off.

wouldn't know how to comfort you if you started crying in front of him or he found you crying in your room or really anywhere in the cirsus. would just look at you first, stare. you'd think that he's judging you but he really doesn't know what to do. after a while he'd just sit next to you and wait for you to open up or tell him to fuck off. he genuinely doesn't want you abstracting, anyone but you.

Been a minute since I've written an entire cast shot for TADC-- dont expect this to be a common thing again

Notes: gn reader, short and sweet, written on computer, Canon character focused, im sure ive already written this a loooooooong time ago but blah blah blah feeling like its been long enough to warrant a rewrite esp as new episodes have likely come out between then and now

CAINE

LOVE love loves cuddling with you- hes never actually cuddled another person... bubble doesnt count and thats more of like... comical clinging hug than actual cuddling!

odds are youre physically larger than him but thats not going to stop him being big spoon- definitely has the traditional "men need to be the one in that position" not because he feels he NEEDS to as a man... he just likes feeling like youre personal protector- your man, your guy, your... uhuhuh... yeah!

he sometimes like to cuddle you mid air... hope youre not afraid of heights and the odd feeling of defying physics!

POMNI

again, odds are youre larger than her. she seems more of a little spoon person... though she strikes me as the type to be an awkward cuddler. she doesnt really know where to put her hands- even if its far from the first time youve cuddled into one another

i love her, and she loves you- but pomni looks like the type of person to run uncomfortably hot and doesnt like being touched because of it... clammy and gross feeling, doesnt like it. dont touch her she will get irritated from the feel... its not that she doesnt like you she just doesnt like feeling sweaty

compromises by holding your hand in bed... looping your fingers together as you sleep feels... more tender honestly...

RAGATHA

shes soft and plush- of course she is, shes a doll! definitely has some weight to her... sleeping with her arm wrapped around you is so comforting, genuinely the best sleep youve gotten in a while

she also vaguely smells like berries! so thats a bonus! she totally gets it if you nestle your face into her hair and drift off smelling her! sure its a little quirky but shes not going to judge you for it... honestly if you smelled nice like that she might do the same

no big spoon/little spoon thing... you two mostly just cling onto one another in the bed by any means necessary

JAX

only ever cuddles you when he knows for a fact other people arent going to come in and see him like this. i still stand firm that he hates being seen as soft and vulnerable. even letting himself indulge in stuff like this in an unapologetically tender and sincere way for YOU takes some time

and even then hes most likely to shift into you and cuddle if youre asleep, unable to perceive his rare moment of just... being soft.

he doesnt like being little spoon though, even without the vulnerability stuff

hes kind of sticky.. hes not fluffy in my mind. hes like those rubber squishy toys

KINGER

its... nice holding someone again... but when was the last time hes held someone? why does it feels so familiar but so different- it wasnt you in his arms before was it? it was... someone else, wasnt it? ...hes hardly in the moment long enough most of the time to really dwell on it

he likes being the big spoon- keeping you in his arms... er... hands... makes him feel anchored, calmer. he knows hes missed this even if he cant quite pin point why

but... he kind of melts right into you when you turn it back on him and make him the little spoon. its like seeing a stunned animal relax into comfort

GANGLE

cuddling with her can be a little... hard.. shes made of ribbon so there isnt much to hold and she doesnt have much weight to her... it.. definitely is a sore topic for her. it makes her feel like shes falling short somewhere. like she cant properly cuddle you

even holding her bundled up in your arms doesnt feel right, and shes going to pull away the entire time- doesnt want to waste your efforts even if you try to reassure her... times like this call for creativity--

wrapping her ribbons around you might be a little unconventional... and might lead to tangling- but its something, and its something only you two can do.. no one else! its special and unique to your relationship specifically.. word it like that to her and she'll cheer up a bit!

ZOOBLE

they dont... much care for cuddling. for multiple reasons. partly because its just not for them, and partly because it forces them to actively become aware of what their body is like... the shape, the textures... its all a bit much...

but zooble doesnt want to make you feel rejected- its a hard situation all around. they are going to at least talk to you about it so youre not left in the dark... though it might take a while for them to bring it up

they much prefer non physical intimacy anyways- even prior to the circus. acts of service, talking, spending time. things like that mean more to them
