Dunki review
Spoilers for themes and tone below. Don't read if you want to go in cold. In short: recommended.
I can see now why none of the trailers for Dunki really did it for me. The second drop song Lutt Putt did though, and that was enough for me to think the trailers might be misrepresenting the film.
I was right. Or rather, it's not that they misrepresent the film, but they misdirect about what the actual journey is so that you're not spoiled.
The thing the trailers are working so hard to hide is that this is a tragedy. Yes, it has a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, especially in the first half. It also has some pointed satire as you'd expect from this director, and adventure, and a bit of action, and some rousing speeches. And romance of course, with SRK at his soulful best. It has all of that, and it's deftly done and very entertaining.
But we all should have known from the title that there was only one way a story like this could really end.
Dunki is about the bitterness of poverty, and how it strips people to their core character and forces them into making choices that change their lives forever. Even when that change leads to the best possible outcome - which it usually doesn't - it's at the price of bone deep regret that cannot be undone. It's life ruining.
Of Shah Ruhk Khan's three movies this year, I was bored by Pathaan, but could see why people were keen on it. In contrast, I was sold on Jawan from the first preview and adored it - a highlight of the year for me. But I didn't really get what all the fuss was about Dunki, and why people were so hyped about it.
I get it now. This director knows their stuff.
I'm not sure how big a hit Dunki will be, because I don't think it will be what people expect. It's not a feel-good Christmas movie. I got the vibe from people leaving the cinema that they enjoyed it, but weren't wowed.
I enjoyed it a lot - in a completely different way to Jawan, even though it has some thematic similarities. I need to mull Dunki over some more before I come to a final conclusion about it. Do I want to re-watch it? I think so, but maybe not for a while. It made me sad.
Dunki is a really entertaining movie and I recommend it, just be ready for a tragedy, not a romcom.
You'll laugh. You'll fall in love. You'll have your heart stomped on. It's a whole ride.

Jailer (2023) Spoiler Review
If you like pure mass entertainment and a group of veteran actors kicking ass, you'll love Jailer.
I saw Rajni's Petta a while back and while I enjoyed some parts of it, I was largely frustrated towards the end. I also saw Nelson's (the director) Beast, and while it had a straightforward premise, some parts of it were eyebrow-raising (I still love the hallway shooting scene with Vijay, though, that was just hella cool even if it didn't make sense). So, when they announced a Nelson and Rajinikanth collaboration, I wasn't sure if I should bother watching.
I'm glad I watched it though. For one, the story isn't all over the place. The revenge angle and heist subplot made sense together.
The flashback revealing Rajini's days as a hard-core warden aka Jailer was pretty nice. I liked that his hair style looked like the one in his older movies. However, I really don't understand why the inmates liked him or became loyal to him. It was never showed what he did to make them turn over a new leaf. They just said he helped them, but we mainly saw him being extremely violent.
Okay, this is part where I reveal that I saw Jailer a day after I saw Jawan. I couldn't help comparing the action in both movies because the action in Jailer is so violent! I'm not complaining or cringing. I actually liked the over-the-top violence lmao. It's just that I was like "Oh, right, this is one of things I was waiting for in Jawan -- hyperviolence!" LMAO.
Anyway, I do love that the former inmates that helped him were veteran action stars from Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema: Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal and Jackie Shroff respectively. Bruh, I had goosebumps when Shiva R stepped into the house to protect Muthu's family while the Hukum song played!
Next, let's talk about the songs and bgm. "Hukum" really is such a banger of a song. And the style that they do, where they insert bits of the song's melody into cool scenes that build up and lead to the FULL SONG or at least CHORUS is such a great style because it makes you so hyped for the next badass scene!
Now, the family -- I honestly thought Rajni and Ramya Krishnan would have more romantic moments together since this is their reunion. Like, yes, they're grandparents now, but so what? It's always nice to see older people still doing romantic stuff with each other y'know.
Anyway, that twist with his son! I didn't expect them to go all the way with the betrayal but wow. It was really sad, but I liked that they went for that gut-wrenching story, too. Rajini is not much of a dramatic actor, but his performance was good for what the script called for. Also, his partnership with Yogi Babu was funny and nice. Also, those bald sharp-shooter guys! Their costume changes! That was so hilarious! And Varman's henchmen! The random funny characters and elements are really such a fun part of the mass experience.
All in all, Jailer is a really enjoyable movie for the whole family (if your kids are old enough to not be so desensitized to violence I guess).

I saw Jawan today and ...
The last film I saw on a big screen was Ponniyin Selvan, Part 2, and before I went to see Jawan I had a talk with myself. "Self," I said, "although I don't know much about this movie, I know that it is not directed by one of India's greatest directors, nor is based on a classic series of novels, nor is the sequel to the previous film which had well-developed, memorable characters even in smaller roles, played by extremely good actors. So do not expect, Self, that this will give you the same kind of experience that the PS films did."
And with that said, no, this definitely didn't give me the same kind of experience but it was really fun to see one time in a theater with friends.
Big, big, VERY BIG ENORMOUS SPOILERS. Don't read if you haven't seen the film and you want to be unspoiled.
Much like my PS2 theatrical experience, I MISSED THE FIRST TEN MINUTES AGAIN, ARGH! I was counting on previews and they didn't have previews, I guess? However, I don't think I missed out on as much as I did by missing the first ten minutes of PS2.
There were lots of things I liked about Jawan, so I'm going to start with those:
The good:
It was fun seeing a bunch of South Indian actors like Priyamani and of course Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. (More about them later.) Oh, and I did like the mini-Family Man reunion with Priyamani and the actress who plays her character's daughter Dhriti on that show :D (If only Manoj Bajpayee had been in this and/or Raj & DK had written the script, this would have been a different film altogether.)
SRK is very charming, but much more so in the second half when he was playing the much more age-appropriate Vikram Rathore. I'll get to why I liked Vikram Rathore more in the parts that I DISLIKED but I also loved that Vikram was very funny. (I always love when SRK is slightly taking the mickey out of himself which he did in the second half of the film. And I cracked up when he asked Suji if she was also his kid.) I would watch a whole entire movie of Vikram Rathore doing cool stuff.
I liked the girl gang concept a lot (I would have even liked it more if the boss had been Kaveri Amma and not SRK, but I don't think the movie would have ever been made if that were the case) and I liked all the individual actresses.
Nayanthara - she was fabulous as the task-force cop and looked so good doing action scenes. I love her.
Deepika Padukone - she's so gorgeous and I had some Om Shanti Om vibes with this, which is a movie that I really love. And the emotional parts were pretty good too.
While the political messaging was extremely heavy-handed, I did like that it came up in the movie, especially the part about voting. (When they stole the voting machines, I couldn't help but wonder if the scriptwriters had been listening to any of the insane election 2020 denialism in the US :P Was Hugo Chavez behind any of this? :P) However, maybe the script would have been tighter if they had targeted ONE social ill, instead of all of them?
Vijay Sethupathi - I will always just really like him whatever he's doing, because I'm like a duckling about movies and I imprint on actors based on what I first saw them in*, and I saw VJS in Farsi first, and loved him in that. SO ...
There was enough humor that I didn't feel like it was entirely taking itself seriously which is important in this kind of a film (though you didn't have to show people rolling around laughing to cue us to laugh, director Atlee!!) Let your script do its thing, dude! (Oh, wait, I forgot that the script was ... the script that it was. Which brings me to the bad):
The bad:
I'm sorry but the de-aging VFX for SRK was honestly a bit creepy - people drag Nayanthara for having work done, but I'll take her still-human face over the plastic-y face Azad. When he pulled the bald sock thing off his head, I really thought he was going to peel off his entire face and show "normally aged SRK" but nope!
I just threw up my hands and laughed when they discovered Deepika was pregnant just by taking her pulse. Why do they even make pregnancy tests, am I right? And I don't know about India, but surely they would have you know, taken her blood group etc. when she was first incarcerated?
Which brings me to my VAST apology to all Tamil movies in which I have shaken my head in disbelief that a man who repeatedly has his head whacked with a metal bar or banged into a concrete pillar doesn't even have a concussion, let alone a skull fracture. No, compared to Jawan, you are all PINNACLES of realism! Because SRK was shot five times, thrown out of an airplane that was above the cloudline, fell into a body of water and didn't break any bones, AND banged his head on a rock and apparently just suffered some slight amnesia. Um, ok then! (I think the part where the dude finds him and says he's keeping his promise to Azad might have been in the first ten minutes that I missed, so maybe there's some explanation for why he didn't die - but for now, I just have to assume he was the incarnation of Grigorii Rasputin. And I will almost certainly never watch this movie a second time, so it will just have to remain a mystery unless someone can explain to me in the comments or something.
The music was completely forgettable. There wasn't a single song that I can even remember the tune of, nothing catchy, no memorable lyrics etc. That WAS disappointing.
Random new subplots that made NO SENSE. Like what was the whole thing about stealing the elections with mafia money? Why was that even in there? And if it had to be in there, why didn't the SRKs just leave him to the mercy of those people who would have murdered him inventively for losing their money? And if they just wanted SRKs to kill him the way he got Aishwarya killed, then why include that subplot? None of that subplot made any sense at all. (Actually very little of that plot made any sense.)
Another thing was the women's jail/rest home. If that is prison, I am surprised more people weren't clamoring to be incarcerated. It looked much nicer than living on a farm. It was super clean and they seemed to have a ton of freedom even before Azad became the warden.
The way Nayanthara was completely sidelined in the second half. I also have no idea why she decided to marry SRK after five minutes. (And they totally stole her costumes in Chaliye from the Kannala Kannala song in "Thani Oruvan" - a far, far better song than any of the songs in Jawan. (See below)
youtube
So all in all, I did enjoy the film and I'm glad I saw it, despite its flaws. But this is not a rewatch for the nuances type of film!
*Kay Kay Menon, Tabu, and Shahid Kapoor fan for life because I first saw them in Haider. Which is definitely the best movie Shahid Kapoor has ever made, but Farzi was really excellent too and Shahid and Kay Kay were in it alongside VJS. Watch eeeeeeet!

Jawan
Tumblr media
Finished Watching: 2/13/2025
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama Thriller
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟/5 (3/5)
Expectations: I was so excited for this movie, not because of anything that I've heard about it, but specifically because I'm an SRK fan. However, the film actually wasn't as good as I expected it to be. I just thought it would be a favorite because of Shah Rukh Khan, but it actually was not.
Not a Favorite
Summary: Vikram is driven by a desire to fix societal wrongs and ruin a business man named Kalee who is behind these societal wrongs. He holds the government accountable through his demands and sets the stage for his biggest take down.
Thoughts (*SPOILERS*):
This movie was a lot darker than expected. Also a lot more graphic. I watched the director's cut of the movie (on Netflix) so I'm not sure how many of the scenes were in both.
The first part was confusing but I saw people that I thought were Nepali. They later turned out to be just a broad North Eastern Indian tribe, but I was so excited at the fact that I was being represented, so Bollywood please just add more types of south asian people. Watching that scene I already knew what kind of movie it was going to be (or thought I did) and got a little more excited. I usually like a good revenge story where the one who's the "beaten down" dude fights back.
The first hostage scenario was absolutely insane. I didn't know what to expect as I went into the movie raw dogging it. I just didn't know what the movie was about except for the fact he was a police officer and a villain-esque character. My roommate and I were watching this part together and we lost it when he shot a woman. When the backstory was explained and they showed people hanging themselves I kind of then knew, "oh shit this is like an actual psa sort of movie." And when people loved him instead of hating him, I cheered. Like literally, when the kid left the train wearing his bandages, I lost my shit like crazy.
The second hostage scenario was also quite insane, but this one hurt me a lot more. I work closely with kids and seeing them suffer even on screen actually had me letting out a sob. It wasn't as crazy as the first one, but was definitely more grounding, especially when it started to sink in that these probably weren't far off from real stories. I realized that, and then got a little sad for the rest of the movie.
The backstory of Azad really got me, especially when the kid saw his mom dead. That shit was brutal. But beyond that, it made the main character more lovable, when it really didn't need to. Felt like it was a bit overkill, but whatever. I think this part was added to the people who might have been like "yEaH bUt He'S bReAkInG tHe LaW." Like no shit Sherlock, that's the point.
The final hostage situation was I think the best part, especially when it comes to this movie being a psa for voting. Azad stealing the voting machines was quite the turn that I didn't expect. I should have expected it but I didn't.
The sub-plot of the romance kind of turned me off a bit, especially with the kid involved, until later. When I figured out who the woman was and what was kind of happening, I just zoned out for those parts until the Narmada turned to the "dark" side.
All in all, I liked the movie a lot. It could have been done with a lot less bloody battles and shit. But especially with more recent societal events in the USA, I think this movie is a great PSA movie. I also wish that there were more heroes like Azad out there.

Baby John Movie Review: BABY JOHN is a mass entertainer which works
Baby John Review {3.5/5} & Review Rating
Star Cast: Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi
Tumblr media
Director: Kalees
Baby John Movie Review Synopsis: BABY JOHN is the story of a protective father. John D’Silva (Varun Dhawan), a restaurateur, stays in Alappuzha, Kerala with his daughter Khushi (Zara Zyanna). He dotes on her and is bringing her up with the right values. John forms a bond with Khushi's teacher Tara (Wamiqa Gabbi). Tara takes John's help, without his knowledge, when she rescues a girl and approaches the cops. John is aghast when he learns about Tara’s actions due to his past with the police force. A complaint is filed against a dreaded henchman, Boss (Jaffer Sadiq). Assuming that John complained to the police and that he’s a common man, Boss and his men attack him. But John turns out to be a beast. He finishes them off ruthlessly. Tara sees him attacking the goons and learns that he's none other than Satya Verma, who was once the DCP and the husband of Dr. Meera (Keerthy Suresh). But his confrontation with Nanaji (Jackie Shroff) proves to be a turning point in his life. Hence, he decides to leave the force and live as a common man. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Baby John Movie Story Review: Atlee's story is massy but also a bit outdated. Kalees's screenplay tries to rise above the plot and is infused with mass moments. However, the writing could have been better. Sumit Arora's dialogues add to the mass touch.
Kalees's direction is commercial. The film is mounted on a huge scale and it has been handled appropriately. The bond shared by the father and the daughter is adorable while the romantic track also has its moments. But the best is reserved for the mass elevation scenes. The scenes that are memorable are John attacking the goons at night, Satya and Meera’s first meeting, Satya searching for Amba (Snigddha Suman) and what happens thereafter. The pre-interval block is when the film goes on another level and it’ll be greeted with whistles and claps. Post-interval, Satya’s meeting with the parents and the shootout at his residence stand out. The scene of Bhima Rane (Shrikant Yadav) and the North Eastern kid is well thought out.
On the flipside, BABY JOHN comes too late in the day as it gives a déjà vu of SIMMBA [2018], JAWAN [2023] etc. The execution is overall satisfactory but in some places, it's haphazard. The product placement of Center Fresh and Astral Pipes is quite in-your-face. But the biggest issue is that of the writing. BABY JOHN is a remake of THERI, which arrived 8 years ago. A lot has changed since then in terms of tastes and trends and Atlee should have aligned the script accordingly. Moreover, the hero vs villain equation is not convincing. Usually, the villain needs to be so powerful that the audience should wonder how the hero would defeat him. But in BABY JOHN, the hero becomes all-powerful once he harms Nanaji big time and doesn’t face consequences from the police department or the government. Nana takes revenge much later. But by then, it becomes clear that Satya can finish Nanaji, whenever he wants. This aspect severely impacts the goings-on.
Baby John – Trailer | Atlee | Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, Jackie Shroff
Baby John Movie Review Performances: Varun Dhawan delivers a sincere performance and excels in the action and emotional scenes. However, it’s not convincing to show him as a DCP as he seems young for that position. Ideally, there should have been a reason why he managed to rise through the ranks so early in his life. Keerthy Suresh makes a superb debut in Bollywood and has an arresting screen presence. Wamiqa Gabbi, as expected, rocks the show, albeit in a supporting role. Jackie Shroff looks menacing and does a brilliant job. But he’s let down by the writing. Zara Zyanna is adorable. However, a few of her dialogues are not audible properly. Jaffer Sadiq is apt for the part. Shrikant Yadav lends able support. Rajpal Yadav (Ram Sevak) is seen in a different avatar and would be loved by the audience. Sheeba Chaddha (Madhvi Verma; Satya's mother) is dependable as always. Zakir Hussain (Baldev Patil) and Prakash Belawadi (Yashraj Mukherjee) are strictly okay. Omkar Das Manikpuri (Badrinath) and Mona Ambegaonkar (the doctor who tries to revive Amba) are fair. Lastly, Salman Khan’s cameo is quite entertaining.
Baby John movie music and other technical aspects: Thaman S's music is not of chartbuster variety. The title song is the only song that stands out. 'Nain Matakka' is well picturized while 'Pikley Pom' is passable. 'Bandobast' is too similar to 'Zinda Banda'.  'Hazaar Baar' and 'Gudda Guddi' are forgettable. Thaman S's background score is energetic.
Kiran Koushik's cinematography is satisfactory. Anl Arasu, Stunt Silva, Anbariv, Yannick Ben, Sunil Rodrigues, Kaloyan Vodenicharov, Manohar Verma, and Bronwin October's action is violent but works well in a film like this. T Muthuraj's production design is rich. Sheetal Iqbal Sharma's costumes are appropriate while Shruthi Manjari's costumes for Keerthy Suresh are appealing. NY VFXWaala's VFX is superior. Ruben's editing could have been slicker, especially in the first half.
Baby John Movie Review Conclusion: On the whole, BABY JOHN is a mass entertainer which works due to the clapworthy moments, the message, Varun Dhawan’s energetic performance and the cameo by Salman Khan. At the box office, the film will benefit owing to the long holiday period and no competition until Republic Day.

Dunki Full Movie Review
Director - Rajkumar Hirani Writers - Abhijat JoshiRajkumar HiraniKanika Dhillon Starscast - Taapsee PannuRyan CretneyPriya Sindher A soldier, Hardayal Singh Dhillon (Shah Rukh Khan) takes on an arduous and audacious mission, of helping a group of friends realise their dream of going to England. It seems like an impossible task because neither do they have a visa or nor can they can afford a ticket. And It is the start of a journey that promises to change all their lives forever. 'Dunki's' story is an emotional one - rolling in friendship, romance, heart-broken and heart-warming moments all into one. Manu and Hardy's tender love story unfolds from Laltu to London and back.. And in trademark Hirani style, there are dollops of comedy which is laced with satire to make it an entertaining ride, along with the strong message the film brings forth. Although the take on the issue is simplistic and sometimes the humour is iffy. The expansive narrative (Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, Kanika Dhillon) not only crosses borders and landscapes but also has a 25-year time leap. After two back-to-back blockbusters, Pathaan and Jawan, Shah Rukh Khan's 'Dunki' comes riding on huge expectations. And it marks the first collaboration between Rajkumar Hirani and Khan. Stepping out of the action-hero mould he donned in his first two outings this year, with 'Dunki', Hirani gives us a wholesome Shah Rukh Khan - he's charming, romantic, funny and pulls off some mean action sequences too. There are meta references and a hat-tip to some of Khan's iconic cinematic moments. Overall, 'Dunki' is a wholesome entertainer that's rousing, relevant, romantic and about returning to your roots.

God Of Violence - BHAIYYA JI: The Revenge Of A Big Brother!
Tumblr media
This is the story of an elder brother’s love for his younger brother and his vengeance for his younger brother’s murder. Feared gangster Ram Charan Tripathi a.k.a Bhaiyya Ji (Manoj Bajpayee) retires from the crime world. His younger brother who used to be a good guy, diametrically opposite to him, gets killed during an argument by the son of an influential Gujjar, Abhimanyu Singh (Jatin Goswami). Check out this raw and violent revenge action-thriller as Bhaiyya Ji roars to avenge his brother’s death which shakes the entire crime world! Co-produced by Vinod Bhanushali and Manoj Bajpayee, and co-written and directed by Apoorv Singh Karki, Bhaiyya Ji is blasting the theaters from May 24, 2024! Get Ready To Witness The Desi Machismo: Introducing Manoj Bajpayee as Bhaiyya Ji! https://youtu.be/y-XIMzKOWg4?si=biszCp0sWdudOeWe Raw, Rustic, And Massy Dhamaka! Bhaiyya Ji (2024) Official Trailer: https://youtu.be/BTG7TVVD_ys?si=E4T2cnAkBvxps8lF The Good: If you love violence and intense raw action, Bhaiyya Ji is a movie you wouldn’t want to miss out on! Remember the crime-thriller series Mirzapur? Well, if you want to watch that two-season web series in the form of a 2-hour and 15-minute movie, then look no further. You will visualize the same blood-curdling tale of revenge and violent action in Bhaiyya Ji as you did in Mirzapur. The only difference is this time it is Manoj Bajpayee who mesmerizes the audience with his incredibly powerful titular character of the retired crime lord. In terms of violence, Manoj Bajpayee has surpassed even the most violent action heroes in Hindi cinema. I have to say Bajpayee is a true character actor. If you had seen him as a nerdy advocate in the 2023 legal drama “Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai”, you would have been astounded by how he has completely transformed himself into the character of a fearful and violent gangster in this 2024 action-thriller. Besides, the entire movie rests on Bajpayee’s shoulders. His unique body language, raw expressions, and threatening dialogue delivery give the screenplay an exciting takeoff! If you ask me, I am indeed surprised by Manoj Bajpayee’s comeback to the big screen as a violent character. The raw and intimidating action scenes in Bhaiyaa Ji appear to even surpass those in Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” and “Jawan”. Zoya Hussain opposite Bajpayee gives an equally powerful performance. Bhaiyya Ji Ka Bhaukaal: “Baagh Ka Kareja” (Heart Of A Tiger) Track Featuring Manoj Bajpayee! https://youtu.be/FwKDTtGO7FU?si=RnCFAAvOnfAG_Bhf Suvinder Vicky as Gujjar Chandrabhan Singh is the lead antagonist in this movie. His performance is intriguing. The filming was done mainly in Uttar Pradesh, India. The sets indicate local district areas and the cinematic style has the pleasing retro essence of an original Hindi movie. The Bad: It’s an absolute war meant for daring men to watch only! A clear warning, this movie is not made for women and children as it is filled with extremely abusive language, blood, and gore. I would suggest to those who like watching interesting story-based dramas that you do not watch this film. Bhaiyya Ji as a film relies on its presentation and not the story. From the beginning till the end, this film will build up its screenplay such that it proceeds toward a devastating, bloody, and gory climax. Not that the story is fast-paced. At times, certain unnecessarily extended monotonous scenes may appear boring to you. The editing could have been better. https://youtu.be/RMXmQanPCcY?si=bjkTrLKGEP1LUyLf The Verdict: After the courtroom drama “Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai”, Manoj Bajpayee once again reunites with writer and director Apoorv Singh Karki to present a blood-curdling action-thriller! However, the plot is very predictable as you will know from the beginning itself what's going to happen in the climax. Not for the faint-hearted but Bhaiyya Ji is for real men to watch. So, build up your courage, and don’t miss out on Manoj Bajpayee in his fierce and lethal avatar! Destruction Reloaded! https://youtu.be/_AFj6Zb7A5w?si=2wqCVKBJhHgrYwxE Read the full article
