Iasi Ch F: Hugo Dellien [6] def. Javier Barranco Cosano 6-1, 6-1 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
It truly was a H. Dellien masterclass once he dialed in from the baseline, striking the ball cleanly and hitting the ball harder that got J. Barranco Cosano out of rhythm since the setup. To continue, the former often mixed things up with occasional drop shots and slices, but the importance came from the intuitive play that outplayed J. Barranco Cosano from start to finish. This domination from H. Dellien helped him creating 7 break points, converting 5 of them into 2 separate breadsticks, with no chance for the Spaniard to create or convert his chances as a result of his constant errors.
Furthermore, this was also reflected from H. Dellien's service games. Scoring 4 aces than J. Barranco Cosano's 0, the Bolivian sixth seed had an exceptional first serve winning percentage with 81%, 37% more than the latter, which helped him to solve the slightest problems. However, even though J. Barranco Cosano double-faulted twice throughout the match, his inability to respond to H. Dellien's deeper balls resulted in the fading of his second serve percentage to 36%, making it more vulnerable as the play went on.
This marked H. Dellien's first Challenger title this year, which, interestingly, came a week after his younger brother Murkel won the Brasov Challenger. In Hugo's case, this propelled his rank back to 139 live for a chance in a Top 100 comeback push. Somehow, his next tournament will also be the Amersfoort Challenger, where he will face Jiri Vesely in the first round. This could be an interesting match all along, with a potential classic on the line at their best!

H. Dellien somehow continued his dominance in the second set. Although the first two games started with two service game holds, the sixth seed's offensive play started with an intuitive volley, but J. Barranco Cosano's forehand error afterward did not help as he ended up being broken to 2-1 thanks to H. Dellien's forehand response to the Spaniard's drop shot. He then consolidated to 3-1, but somehow doubled the break after creating his break point thanks to his functional drop shot (4-1).
Without any further hesitation, H. Dellien held his service game (5-1), but the demolition did not stop. The Bolivian sixth seed fumbled J. Barranco Cosano's game point through his fourth-shot forehand pass, and even if the latter initially had a break point, it was foiled due to his double fault, followed by his forehand error that created H. Dellien's match point before its immediate conversion served the second-set breadstick (6-1), thus securing him the title this year.

Meanwhile, in the Iasi Challenger...
Simultaneously, another Challenger-level final took place in the Iasi Challenger, where sixth seed Hugo Dellien, who defeated Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 7-6(4), 6-2 in an all-Latin American clash, took on Javier Barranco Cosano, who stunned eighth seed Enzo Couacaud 7-6(5), 7-5 in another competitive encounter to make his maiden Challenger-level final. At their best, this could have been a fruitful match that tested their return depth and aggression, with what happened after moving forward becoming a different issue, but this match was an entirely different case in this regard.
J. Barranco Cosano then started the match with a rare working drop shot, but H. Dellien's powerful shots then complemented his serves afterward to start the match with a service game hold to 1-0. It took two more games before H. Dellien started the next game with an exciting rally that ended with his smash before he held to 2-1, but it was not until the next game where the Bolivian started it with a working forehand pass, followed by a backhand pass several points later to pave the way before he smashed his way to fumble Barranco Cosano's game points through his ground game, where the Spaniard's failed drop shot and a forehand error confirmed the break for H. Dellien to 3-1.
Subsequently, even if H. Dellien survived a deficit coming from a rare forehand winner, he still consolidated the play to 4-1 before J. Barranco Cosano had an erratic start to the game, where his forehand error (and a double fault somewhere) became prevalent before the sixth seed started striking more as he struck the ball down-the-line through his forehand to create his break point, thus earning his chance to serve for the first-set breadstick after the break (5-1). Without any further ado, he sealed the set with an ace (6-1), asserting further dominance to secure his commanding lead in this match.

J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran then continued their solid showing from the first set as they held their serves to 1-0, starting the next game with a forehand winner before trying to outhit R. Stepanov/T. Whiting to break early to 2-0, followed by a consolidation to 3-0 afterward even though they survived a volley winner. Somehow, the latter started putting themselves on the board by holding their serves to 3-1.
It took several more games before R. Stepanov/T. Whiting nailed an exciting net exchange with their final volley securing their 1-point lead before they held their serves to 4-2. To add, they also survived a match point made due to their +1 backhand error before holding their serves to 5-3, which meant that J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran had to serve for the match. The latter successfully did it, taking the second set 6-3 to secure their spot in tomorrow's semifinals.

Sealing the day while catching up with the crazy backlog due to rain was the doubles match between Javier Barranco Cosano/Nicolas Moreno de Alboran, who stunned first seeds Orlando Luz/Marcelo Zormann 7-6(4), 7-6(4) earlier as N. Moreno de Alboran's singles quarterfinal match concluded, and Roy Stepanov/Tennyson Whiting, who advanced due to wild cards Cezar Cretu/Dan Alexandru Tomescu's withdrawal. This match turned out to be an exciting one, with several exchanges of breaks before the tie-breaker likely determined the flow.
To start, after 2 smooth consecutive holds, J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran scored a working backhand lob before a failed smash somewhere from R. Stepanov/T. Whiting, as well as a double fault, did not help, except for the former pair to break 2-1. However, the latter pair's swift and anticipative returns allowed them to break back to 2-2, and they maintained the level of play with a service game hold to 3-2.
It took two more games before J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran started the next game with a working smash 2 points into that game while capitalizing on R. Stepanov/T. Whiting's previous double fault that secured the earlier lead, with another failed smash becoming a concern before breaking to 4-3 only to be broken back (4-4) due to an erratic service game moments after the latter pair's more successful smash. After two service game holds, the tie-breaker then became inevitable.
R. Stepanov/T. Whiting's earlier double fault then set up J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran's 1-point lead before an unreturned serve secured their earlier service game hold to 2-0. With some swift returns, the latter maintained the lead while the former's double faults midway also did not help. To top it off, J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran took the first set 7-6(0) by serving an unreturned serve, completing the tie-bagel to set themselves ahead in this match.

Headlining the evening in the Szczecin Challenger was the "Battle of the Federicos" between Federico Arnaboldi, who knocked out Javier Barranco Cosano 6-3, 7-6(6) in the first round, and second seed Federico Coria (hereby referred to as Fefo for disambiguation purposes), who stunned wild card Olaf Pieczkowski 6-0, 6-3 thanks to a dominant performance. This match evolved to be a pushfest toward its end as the moment shifted back and forth, but only the more consistent one under pressure prevailed as they tried to stay balanced.
Fefo had an aggressive start to the match as he fired a backhand down-the-line winner for an equalizer before going after F. Arnaboldi's forehands, whose errors caused the early break to 1-0. The Argentinean second seed then followed it up with a solid hold to 2-0, and continued targeting the unseeded Italian's forehands before the error caused Fefo to double the break to 3-0. By then, Fefo strengthened his position with a service game hold to 4-0.
Subsequently, even if Fefo pulled a forehand pass winner for another equalizer and forced a deuce somewhere, F. Arnaboldi remained on the scoreboard as he held his serves to 4-1. After the former held to 5-1, he asserted more pressure to F. Arnaboldi, creating his break point through another smooth backhand down-the-line winner, where even if the 2 of the set points were saved, Fefo still baked the first-set breadstick (6-1) to put himself ahead in this match.

The first Challenger finals of the week featured the Tampere Challenger, where fourth seed Calvin Hemery, who defeated fifth seed Javier Barranco Cosano 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 through a scenic route in the semifinals, faced ninth seed Daniel Rincon, who defeated Gabi Adrian Boitan 7-6(6), 6-4 to make his maiden Challenger-level final. While their competitiveness only happened as this match progressed, this was not the case when they began the match.
Already in the first game, C. Hemery faced 3 break points before a failed underarm serve+1 attempt secured D. Rincon's early break to 1-0. However, this was followed by the Frenchman's break-back to 1-1 after a rare working volley that secured his one-point lead before the break-back. Somehow, D. Rincon broke back to 2-1 due to an erratic service game from C. Hemery, which allowed the ninth seed to casually pass for his lead, followed by the Frenchman's forehand errors for the break. Afterward, D. Rincon held his serves to 3-1.
The rhythm did not end here because a cross-court forehand that went too far created D. Rincon's break point before the ninth seed doubled the break to 4-1. D. Rincon then held his serves to 5-1, and somehow fired a working preceding forehand to C. Hemery's forehand error, which paved the way for the Spanish ninth seed to create his initial set point, which was converted several points later to serve the first-set breadstick (6-1), asserting his dominance in this match.

Brasov Ch D QF: Javier Barranco Cosano/Nicolas Moreno de Alboran def. Roy Stepanov/Tennyson Whiting 7-6(0), 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
There was some kinds of momentum swing in the first set as there were exchanges of breaks, but the anticipative returns from J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran helped them to dominate the flow during the tie-breaker as they also went after R. Stepanov/T. Whiting's second serves. This way, their point construction and their shot placements also helped them to set up the second set, breaking early and had not looked back since. As a result, even though both players had 5 break points, the former pair converted 60% of their break points thanks to some clutch return games along the way.
Besides, J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran also appeared slightly more solid on serve. Scoring 5 aces than R. Stepanov/T. Whiting's 2, the former pair won 71% of their first serve points to get themselves out of most troubles. Interestingly, they won 2% more second serve points compared to the first with 73%, as R. Stepanov/T. Whiting double-faulted four times, which faded their second serve winning percentage 27% behind the former pair, especially considering the frequent +1 errors that included the failed smash.
In tomorrow's semifinals, J. Barranco Cosano/N. Moreno de Alboran will face fourth seeds Mihai Alexandru Jecan/Szymon Walkow, who defeated Scott Duncan/Hunter Reese 3-6, 6-3, [10-2] in a chaotic, but exciting encounter. This match would test their point construction and their range consistency, where both a possible chaos or close encounter could also remain a possibility. Should be a neat one to carry on the doubles sector before the final later that day!

Prague 2 Ch QF: Alex Molcan [8] def. Rudolf Molleker [4] 6-4, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
R. Molleker might have seemed to have a solid start when he was up a double break to 3-0 in the first set, but until A. Molcan regained his forehand range before breaking back to 3-1, the latter struggled to find his range. It might have taken a while, but the eighth seed was successful in maintaining his range (despite some moments) until he broke for the first set 6-4. Since then, he appeared even firmer in the second set, and cumulatively, he scored 6 times more break points than R. Molleker (12 to 2) even though the latter converted 100% of his break points by the start of this match.
Besides, A. Molcan appeared more consistent on serve despite the first set chaos as a result of a firmer second set showing. Scoring thrice more aces than R. Molleker (6 to 2), A. Molcan won 5% more points from his first serves with a 65% first serve winning percentage, and due to R. Molleker double-faulting thrice, it faded his second serve winning percentage 24% below A. Molcan, who won 3% fewer of his second serve points than his first, confirming his consistency throughout the match.
In tomorrow's semifinal, A. Molcan will face Gauthier Onclin, who defeated Javier Barranco Cosano 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 later that day in the quarterfinals. As both players went back on track in their own ways, this match tested their offensive capabilities, and how they could achieve their balance of power while trying to figure out their aggression. Should be interesting to see who stood out, at the end of the day!

The first Challenger final for this week was the Barcelona Challenger between second seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles, who advanced to the finals due to qualifier Lorenzo Giustino’s retirement upon the conclusion of the first set 7-6(1), and Nick Hardt, who remarkably stunned first seed Quentin Halys 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 in the first round before reaching his first Challenger final within the past few weeks by defeating Javier Barranco Cosano 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in a chaotic ordeal. Parts of this match turned out to be return-heavy in one way or another, which ended up testing their service game consistency at their best.
Zapata Miralles might have had a nervy start since he erred most of his forehands and scored a double fault for N. Hardt’s break point before the latter smothly held his serves to 2-0, creating his game point with a tidy volley. However, the second seed tried to get N. Hardt out of range thanks to his precedig volley, which got the former the break back to 2-2 only to be broken back due to his prevalent forehand errors (3-2). Interestingly, Zapata Miralles broke back again thanks to his constant functional passing shots, one of those resulted in the eventual break to 3-3.
In the subsequent game, N. Hardt started to become more intuitive, where his drive volley secured his second break point. Midway, he fumbled Zapata Miralles’ game points, and somehow broke back again to 4-3 before he got borken back due to an unforced error occurring several moments after Zapata Miralles’ forehand down-the-line winner. N. Hardt’s risk-taking approach became more evident in the last game as he withstood several break points along the way, with the two points that concluded the set playing a massive role: a backhand passing shot to secure the set point, and the Spanish second seed’s mishit forehand, which was fired too far, for the conversion (6-4).

Kicking off the action in the Girona Challenger singles semifinal was the match between Radu Albot, who defeated Javier Barranco Cosano 7-6(3), 6-3 in the quarterfinals, and lucky loser Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo, who advanced due to his fellow lucky loser Joao Sousa's walkover due to his lower back injury prior to his last dance next week in Estoril in the quarterfinals after the former won his second-round match against qualifier Gastao Elias 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 as a revenge to his second-qualifying-round loss a few days prior. While one's properly executed aggression put themselves ahead in this match, keeping it solid became another challenge by the end of the set before possibly other troubles came in afterward.
It all started from the third game as Sanchez Izquierdo's backhands were being sought. It was the cause for Albot's one-point lead to 15-30, the creation of his break point, and a netted backhand for its conversion to 2-1. The Spanish lucky loser then created a break point due to Albot's +1 forehand error and another one from the former's preceding forehand, but Sanchez Izquierdo's forehand error caused the second deuce before Albot solidifying the said lead to 3-1. Somehow, he found his break doubled (4-1) thanks to his defenses, finishing with a notable forehand pass to Sanchez Izquierdo being caught off-guard at the net for a crucial equalizer before the latter's 2 consecutive double faults for the said break.
Albot's shot-making prowess then continued with a forehand lob to win him the first point before consolidating the lead further with a hold to 5-1, but when he had to serve for the first set for the first time 2 games later, Sanchez Izquierdo's cross-court forehand to Albot's failed slices started things before the latter erred his forehands for the break (5-3), signifying Sanchez Izquierdo hung on through his pacing. The Spaniard then held his serves to 5-4, and almost turned the tables as he created another break point from his backhand finish to Albot getting run over from his forehand side, but Albot managed to save them all before successfully firing his forehand pass to serve it out for the first set to 6-4.

Girona Ch R2: Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo [LL] def. Gastao Elias [Q] 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Gastao tried to stay aggressive with his range in the first set, but as soon as Sanchez Izquierdo absorbed his pace and outhit Gastao's forehand side in the other two sets, the latter went out of range from the baseline. As a result, there was a slight difference on their break point conversion rate, where Sanchez Izquierdo converted 27% of his 11 break points compared to Gastao's 20% conversion rate out of his 10 break points, most of which came from the first two sets.
On the other hand, there were several notable differences in their service games. While Gastao had a commendable first serve winning percentage with 73%, 3% above Sanchez Izquierdo thanks to his 5 aces, which mostly got himself out of trouble, the latter had a better margin in terms of their second serves. This was evident as Sanchez Izquierdo double-faulted four times than Gastao's 3, but he could still win 14% more of his second serve points due to the latter's frequent unforced errors under pressure while following things up.
Since his fellow lucky loser Joao Sousa withdrew from their quarterfinal match due to a lower back injury after giving his all in the first two rounds before his last dance next week in Estoril (250), Sanchez Izquierdo directly advanced to the semifinals, where he faced the winner between another lucky loser in Javier Barranco Cosano and Radu Albot. This opened a path to a possible lucky-losers duel, with their aggression and pacing being the most important aspects being tested in this match.

The Challenger finals continued with the Tenerife 1 Challenger, where second seed Pedro Martinez, who opened a bakery by defeating qualifier Javier Barranco Cosano 6-1, 6-1, faced fourth seed Brandon Nakashima, who also stunned qualifier Denis Yevseyev 7-6(6), 6-2 in the semifinals. While a title would put either of them closer to the Top 100 return, this match would see who appeared more intuitive throughout the match to prevail.
P. Martinez initially had a decent start right at the first point through a working volley even though Brandon held that service game 1-0. However, Brandon started to press P. Martinez right from the second game, where Brandon's cross-court backhand winner paved the way to the break point, which was converted thanks to his preceding slice to P. Martinez's failed volley (2-0). Brandon swiftly consolidated to 3-0, and had an interesting equalizer by utilizing his backhand as a transition to a working volley, but P. Martinez held to 3-1 afterward.
Several games later, B. Nakashima had 2 break points, one of which came from P. Martinez's double fault, another one came from his backhand passing finish several shots after his drop shot, as well as backhands and slices exchanges in build-up. Eventually, P. Martinez held that service gane 4-2 and Brandon earned his chance to serve for the first set, where even though he survived P. Martinez's swift return that foiled his set point, he ultimately survived by taking the first set 6-3 with an unreturned serve to affirm his offensive appearance in this match.
