Some of my recent coloring experiments. A lot of times things don't come out the way I planned, and it becomes important to be able to pivot (which sometimes definitely goes better than others). I like playing with sets that are hyper-colored or stylized, then working on more natural ones. I get bored making too much of the same. Honestly, I'm sharing the before and afters because I just really like seeing other people's, so I figure someone else out there like me might enjoy it.

Ok so Davrin! I have Thoughts about Davrin.

Because if you’re aware at all of the stuff I write you’re probably aware that I am a big fan of the kind of character who subsumes their own desires and survival and personhood for the sake of being One Thing, whether that’s a living weapon/made to be a soldier situation or just a “I am Your Best Friend first and foremost situation”. It is, uh. Small wonder I end up liking characters of colour the most, since those are the ones most often written with a Purpose in the story who don’t get to expand beyond that Purpose in the narrative, or if they do have that arc that I crave it’s still underrepresented in fanworks so it becomes my favourite and most frustrating niche where I have to create the content I want to see in the world, which is “person who tries to ignore their own needs gets to realise they’re allowed to love and be loved whether or not they’re useful”. Please be aware that while I don’t specifically discuss Davrin’s Blackness in the next few paragraphs it is a large part of why I’m writing this now because it massively changes the way this story gets read, both because people with unexamined biases will gloss over his story and just accept Davrin as being a tool to the story instead of a person and also because those of us who are aware now must consider how to address such a storyline knowing that Black people most of all are reduced in their stories to things and plot points.

So getting back to Davrin in particular I am both obsessed with and frustrated by how he’s written because! His narrative is such a good example of this trope! He is a monster hunter, and to a lesser extent at the start a protector, and from the moment we meet him he is trying very hard to keep himself shut in that box. He downplays any effect he has on the griffons, is upset at the idea of taking care of Assan because that’s what the others are there for, he’s just the sword arm. As time goes on and we do things like, you know, fight an archdemon without getting our Warden buddy killed, he seems so lost and almost devastated to have not died when he was “supposed to” – and this is a man who doesn’t really seem suicidal at all, he has no real desire to die, he just. Expects to. And what he can do to save others is always more important to him than what he could do to save himself. When my Rook walked in there expecting to be overjoyed with him that they were both still around I have to think the gap in emotion was so jarring to both of them, because like. This man has accepted his own death in the face of the “greater good” for so long that he never once made a contingency plan or even wild hope for “what if I don’t die?” And it’s so cool that he and my Rook got to walk hand in hand through danger and decide they deserve to be happy! It’s so cool that you get to potentially get him through the entire game and into a life with open possibilities and who knows what kind of future for the Wardens! That’s my shit!

And while I can’t say I’ll never choose the Grey Warden option for the griffon choice, to me that is so much a metaphor about letting yourself become a weapon vs finding peace and joy that is in line with you as an individual that if I’m playing the game acting on my conscience, not a Rook who’s further from me, I will always choose Arlathan for them. Because that’s so obviously a metaphor for Davrin’s own growth as a character.

This is where it pisses me off, though – too much of that metaphor is treated literally. Davrin doesn’t verbally acknowledge what the griffons’ changing role means for him, and I’m unsure if an unromanced Davrin ever says anything about planning for the future, having only gotten through the game once thus far. The fucking epilogue where all the companions say a little line about what’s in their future and Davrin just mentions the griffons and not his own fucking life??? Like he had a little line about pursuing romance or whatever but again. That’s a romanced Davrin. If he and my Rook hadn’t vibed “the griffons found a new home in Arlathan” or whatever would have been presented as the sole culmination of Davrin’s character arc. I love coparenting a griffon as much as the next guy but we cannot replace the “sword arm” persona with a “griffon daddy” persona as though him subsuming his needs and wants for the sake of Assan is any better for him than doing it for the Wardens. What the fuck.

Anyway short version of all that is Davrin has my favourite kind of story, and griffons are a metaphor for the way Wardens treat themselves. and the POINT of me writing all that is that you cannot approach his story without acknowledging that the fact that he’s a Black man means people who work/ed on both canon and fan content are ready and willing to treat him as a tool in his own fucking storyline for the sake of an animal, and he deserves so much better because holy hell if you’re gonna write a Black man with this kind of “I exist for a Purpose alone” arc you have got to pay attention to what you’re doing. Please. his story involves Assan but it's not about Assan it's about him.

The Expanse - It's just my favorite show ever. Probably my favorite overall group of characters ever, too.

2. Dark - An actual masterpiece.

3. Gilmore Girls - A nostalgic fall favorite that didn't age great in a lot of ways, but means a lot to me. (we don't talk about the revival).

4. Skins - An incredibly formative show for my teen years, like I wanted to be Effy so badly.

5. Game of Thrones - Despite a nosedive in quality as it progressed, season 3 alone is so absurdly good that it still wins a spot.

6. Arcane - Absolutely gorgeous to look at, and then it's actually a good show, too?? I really hope season 2 sticks the landing.

7. The Bear - I knew when the first trailer dropped that this show would be for me. I always end up crying for Tina.

8. Taskmaster - A much needed pick me up, a different genre from everything else on the list, and absolutely my happy place.

9. Julie and the Phantoms - It just inspires pure, childlike joy? And it arrived in my life at a really difficult time & reminded me to just enjoy things.

10. Shameless (US) - When it was good, it was really good. Another show with another 3rd season I adore.

This was really hard, actually! There are several shows that just missed the list. This definitely reminded me how many shows have an absolutely incredible 1-3 season run, then start losing the plot a bit. But the game is "favorite" not "best," so I decided to go with some shows that had very high highs for me, despite their low lows. There are also a few shows that I think could eventually end up top 10 for me, but they're too new for me to be sure if they stand my personal test of time.

I see people now being like “idk how to feel about Maddie and Wally like is she really alive or dead? How can they be a thing if Maddie is alive?”

Meanwhile my Juke soulmate loving self immediately saw Maddie and Wally and without hesitation went “I like them 👁️”

At first with Juke before I knew people’s takes I was like “omg should I be loving them as much as I do 👁️ bc they cannot be together but yet they need to be together bc soulmates” but then immediately finishing School Spirits with Maddie and Wally I was just like “yes I am for this, no hesitation”

If I have one enemy in Julie and the Phantoms, it's Nick.

"But Nick didn't do anything wrong!" 😑

That one scene in episode 5 felt like a personal attack. It's stated in episode 1 that Julie barely, if ever, talked to Nick. SO TELL ME WHY THIS BOY IS ALL UP IN HER BUSINESS BACKSTAGE BEING NOSY AF TOWARDS A GIRL HE BARELY KNOWS (and one his girlfriend has potentially unresolved beef with, at that).

Nick hyping up that performance that wasn't going to happen made the situation MORE embarrassing for Julie, in my opinion. Like, the poor girl was already gonna be embarrassed; why add Nick into a scene that already makes me feel second-hand embarrassed for Julie and add pure, unfiltered rage to it.

I physically can't watch that episode. I can quote the other episodes line for line, but episode 5? I've watched it maybe like 3 times because I skip it every time I rewatch JATP, which is at least twice a month.

I also have a grudge against him (mostly Netflix, but also him) because SPOILER ALERT!!!! He's the last face we see before the show is canceled. Is it technically Caleb? Yeah. But if he hadn't shown up to Julie's house, he wouldn't have gotten possessed, and I would have gotten a half-way satisfying ending. We did NOT need that cliffhanger. So everytime I see his face (not the actor, just Nick's face, it's weird) I get reminded that the show was canceled, and my day gets ruined.

Anyway, if Nick has no haters, then I'm dead.

Edit: just realized that if you take Nick out of the story the only thing that changes is Perfect Harmony and the cliffhanger, but you can still have PH if you tweak the performance to be with some random and with the cliffhanger we could have gotten a banger with Caleb possessing Carrie or Trevor.

Redstone Snap JATP AU

Julie And The Phantoms is my favourite show. My comfort show. And Redstone Snap is my comfort ship. So I had to mix them up.

Careful this post will container big spoiler for Julie And The Phantoms. If you haven't see the show and wants to watch it wait until you read this post.

Scott is Julie, a lifer (someone who is still living) who lost someone close to him that made him stop music for a while.

Joel as Alex (battery), Jimmy as Reggie (bass) and Lizzie as Luke (guitar). Mumbo isn’t on stage but he wrote all the band’s songs. They’re all ghosts.

If Scott is Julie then Martyn is Flynn (Scott’s best friend, who is a lifer but can’t see the ghosts).

For Flying Solo. The group took Scott's lyrics. And made a banger. The thing is. Mumbo wasn't there. He was panicking over everything and went out to breath. He met Grian who quickly became his best friend (yup, nothing more). And when he got back, they had a full song finished only with Scott's lyrics.

And Mumbo feels bad because he thinks they don't need him anymore. He thinks he'll get replaced. And he feels bad for thinking that. But at the same time Scott is good. His lyrics are good. Why would they need him anymore? But quickly they reassured him and soon Scott and Mumbo started writing lyrics together which got them to be closer and to develop a crush on the other.

Martyn is not able to see Mumbo at least once (he can't be seen by lifers because he's not playing with Scott), he only sees the eye contact between Scott and Jimmy while they sing.

"You~ Totally have a crush on Jimmy.

What ? No I don't."

Martyn is convinced Scott has a crush on Jimmy and Scott is just pure confusion because. No ? They're just friends ??? Also. His crush is Mumbo??????

Caleb is still Caleb. We don’t need to change him. Although I think he died a very long time ago. At a time where the Hollywood Ghost Club wasn’t called that. But something else. And that’s when Grian joined. It was called the Watchmen’s Tower (Yes I managed to tie the Watchers to a Universe without them. What will you do, hmm ? Nothing. I am the one writing this post and I will do what I want mouahahahahahaha). So yeah. Let’s say Fwhip was the other guitarist of the band when they were still alive (yes this is Bobby). But he didn’t die. He lived and recorded their songs without giving them credits. Don’t get him wrong he isn’t a bad guy he just… didn’t think this through ? He wanted the songs of his band to live on so he just recorded them. He just. Never thought of crediting them, at that time it was hurting him so much (yes this is still a dick move but hey ! I don’t think Bobby is truly bad in the show !).

So yeah, they discovered Fwhip stole their songs, they’re mad. They go hunt him. Then Grian introduces them to Cale and BOOM ! That’s how they end up with the stamp. Also. When they come back Scott is pretty mad at them because they stood him up when this night was supposed to be their first show.

Mumbo being the one who fought with his parents and left, when Scott is mad at all the ghosts, Joel, Jimmy and Lizzie show Mumbo at his parent’s house. He is crying. He misses them so much and regrets how he left. When they all go back home, Scott forgives them and they get ready for their next show.

During Finally Free, the eye contacts between Jimmy and Scott are a lot and Mumbo thinks there might be something going on between them.

During all this time, Grian sometimes spies on the ghosts because he doesn’t want his best friend to disappear. At one point Mumbo is so confused and hurt by Grian’s behavior that he only talks about him to the band (except Scott). He talks about Grian so much that the band thinks he has a crush on him.

And sorry for those who hate misunderstandings, but Scott hears the band talking about Mumbo's crush on Grian and he convinces himself it's true. So basically.

Scott thinks there's something between Mumbo and Grian. And Mumbo thinks there's something between Jimmy and Scott.

Scott thinks about Mumbo the whole time he dances with whoever is supposed to be Nick (let’s just say Sausage because Sausage and Scott’s dynamic is funny). Or just. Imagining the song. But instead of keeping it in like Julie does, he actually writes it when he comes back home

Mumbo finds Scott writing a song and asks to look at it. Scott is a bit anxious Mumbo will understand it's about him but he still lets him look. The thing is. Mumbo thinks this song is about Jimmy and not him. So while he reads it he's trying so hard not to let his feelings show. He compliments Scott on the song because even though he's a bit hurt, it's still a very good song.

Scott doesn't have the time to ask him any question or if he's alright (yeah he definitely saw the change Mumbo had while reading the song) because Mumbo just teleported away right after giving him the paper back.

At one point, Scott decides to find and give Mumbo’s parents the song he wrote about them thus making the Unsaid Emily scene. This is also the first time he heard Mumbo sing a whole ass song. It was always some bits when they were writing. Never a whole song ! And they got home together. And Mumbo got a shock because of the stamp and Scott looked so sad and angry (at Caleb) and betrayed and like his whole world shattered.

During Stand Tall. Scott sees everyone coming back and looks backstage just to see Mumbo looking at him with such a big bright smile and Scott wants to cry right there. Then when they all disappeared he wants to cry even more because “God they passed. This is it. They finished their unfinished business. God it hurts. He never got to tell Mumbo how he felt about him. And now he never will.”

The scene with the big ass hug. They all hug each other. And then Mumbo, I don't know. Maybe Mumbo stayed on the side. But soon enough he joins Scott, puts his hands on Scott's cheeks. And oh my god he can touch Scott. He can feel him. He can feel his warmth. And he just kisses him. That's something he wanted to do for a while and now he can.

He will take the chance when he has it. He doesn't know if he'll be able to touch Scott again.
