Study reveals mechanisms of crystal nucleation in glass-ceramics

A research team consisting of NIMS, AGC Inc., and JASRI has observed partial crystallization of a glass—an initial stage in its transformation into a stronger, more heat resistant glass-ceramic. The study is published in the journal NPG Asia Materials. To investigate this crystal nucleation process, the team performed multiscale structural analysis mainly using synchrotron X-rays. Based on this analysis, the team developed a model capable of explaining the crystal nucleation mechanisms within a glass at different spatial scales, from atomic to nano, without contradiction. To obtain a glass-ceramic, it is necessary to synthesize a pristine glass with a composition designed and controlled to precipitate crystals partially through heat treatment. It is believed that in the structure of glass-ceramics, crystal nuclei, which are the seeds of crystals, form within the glass matrix, from which crystal particles grow.

Dalam beberapa waktu terakhir, terjadi perdebatan dan ketegangan di Kabupaten Karangasem, Bali, terkait penertiban baliho dan atribut Partai Solidaritas Indonesia (PSI) oleh Badan Pengawas Pemilu (Bawaslu) dan Satuan Polisi Pamong Praja (Satpol PP) Karangasem. Aksi penertiban ini telah memicu berbagai reaksi dari berbagai pihak terkait, termasuk DPD PSI Karangasem. There was a smattering of polite acknowledgement.

Nenime turned to Aeril and her crew, "And may I introduce my friends and friendly neighbors? Of course, you'll remember Y'pollea, the silver flower of High Commorragh."

Y'pollea herself was flushed and wasted, as when Nenime had last seen her. She ew'd at the term, gave out a derisive snort, and swayed only to be caught by her consort.

"Young Erandaelion, emissary to his father, Count Erandael the Glory of the Setting Sun."

A fair youth, Erandaelion was leonine, with a great mane of golden curls and an equally splendid robe of fine silks.

Nenime had not known him long; her girls sighed at his passing and stole what glances they could, but to her he seemed thirsty for glory, prickly, and somewhat disinterested.

"Elder Artaemy of the Horned Wasp clan, Regent of Wasp Mitre."

A young man he was, but hard eyed. Well-built and powerful, Elder Artaemy dressed in simple leathers, sown with the iridescent scales of his island's giant predator-insects.

"Elder Daenil of the Redclaw clan, Regent of Crab Saddle."

Like his peer, Elder Daenil was likewise young, but leaner, calculating. The corner of his mouth rose ever so slightly, as if he were amused at the mere concept of being here. He wore leathers as well, but black, and cunningly embroidered with crustacean patterns.

The last was the youngest guest at the feast, an actual child. Elder Talara was small, with dark eyes and a mischievous smile. She wore a pale green digil wrapped with a sash and an abundance of amber trinkets and turtle charms.

"Please be seated," Nenime gestured, taking her seat between Y'pollea and her sister. Mathlitas lingered behind her as everyone took their place.

The Autumn festivities were in full swing.

With the wind-down of operations at Laevenir, allies both old and new had arrived at the westward Ynnari haven of Springsong, Neni’Shelwe, in preparation for future campaigns; At the island fastness Yavannie, there was to be a feast in honor of the various emissaries present, including the highly anticipated scions of the Sunblitz Brotherhood and Eldritch Raiders.

One was a woman clad in the blue of Iybraesil. She resembled Nenime, though her hair was shorter, and bound.

“Hail and well met, honored allies. I am the Steward Sulime Arenan,” the woman announced, “& this is Prince Mathlitas, of the Children of Mathlann.”

The other was a youth just recently come into maturity. His dark hair was tousled by the high breeze, but his was a noble bearing.

“Greetings,” the youth inclined his head; his silvery armor shimmered beneath a rich sea-green cloak. “It will be our privilege to see you safely to the celebrations.”

“Springsong welcomes you in the spirit of friendship,” finished Sulime Arenan. “I know my sister and I speak as one when I say we are overjoyed at your arrival.”

“Jaz! Hurry up!” Iris’ grating voice called up the stairs, “We’re gonna be late for you and Barry’s geekfest!”

Jasmine rolled her eyes, trying on her third coat that morning before settling for the brown trench her dad had given her as an early birthday present that year. Grabbing the portfolio on the edge of the dresser, she caught one last glance in the mirror before descending the staircase, her bouncy curls flying past her cheek.

Iris tore her eyes away from her phone to send Jasmine a judgemental look before grabbing her keys, “Finally,” she exclaimed, “I thought you’d never get ready”

“Well,” Jasmine scoffed, locking the door behind her, “Today’s the big day,” she cocked an eyebrow, “or did you forget like you do about everything in my life?”

Iris playfully slapped her shoulder, “I didn’t forget, I know that today’s your big atomic accelerator thingy”

“And…?”

Iris paused, taking an extra-long sip of her coffee before flapping her lips back and forth, “And it means a lot to you and Barry”

“Oh my god” Jasmine sighed, scratching her eyebrow, “You totally forgot about my interview today.”

“No--No I did not” Iris defended, pulling her phone out, “I even wrote it down in my calendar see?”

Jasmine refused to look at the bright screen, biting her cheek as she reflected on her sister’s typical behavior.

Study explores remarkable negative thermal expansion seen in layered ruthenates

A formerly unnoticed monoclinic distortion in Ca2RuO4 explains its enormous negative thermal expansion (NTE) over a wide range of temperatures, discover researchers from Tokyo Tech. The work promises a different route for the design of unconventional NTE materials, with applications in engines, thermal barrier ceramics, and precision instruments, among other things.

Most materials expand when heated, which is why railway tracks and bridges have special expansion joints to help them cope with extreme weather. But a small number of materials do the opposite. The rare phenomenon of shrinking when heated is called negative thermal expansion (NTE). A material with remarkable NTE is Ca2RuO4 (CRO), which is known as a layered ruthenate.

CRO has been a focus of research since Prof. Koshi Takenaka at Nagoya University found its NTE to extend over a 200-degree range. In a recent study published in the journal Chemistry of Materials, researchers from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), Nagoya University, Kanagawa Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, Osaka Prefecture University, Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI) and National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology reveal the physical properties responsible for CRO's intriguing behavior. "Our previous work showed 6.7% volume shrinkage in a CRO sintered body, while the crystallographic change was only 1% and was quite anisotropic. Moreover, a thorough understanding of its origin was lacking, especially on how varying the oxygen content switches NTE to PTE," says Prof. Masaki Azuma, who led the study. Anisotropy refers to a variation in physical properties along different crystal axes.
