CONCERT REVIEW: BABYMETAL AND DETHKLOK W/ JASON RICHARDSON AT PNE FORUM - OCTOBER 3, 2023
Tumblr media
Starting the night was guitar virtuoso Jason Richardson (All That Remains), taking centre-stage as he showcased his versatility as a guitar player, seamlessly transitioning between heavy riffs and melodic solos. With only backing tracks and lack of a live band, Richardson was truly the main character of his performance. His ability to captivate an audience is truly remarkable with the entire crowd headbanging and moshing in unison. Incorporating elements of rock, metal and djent, Richardson left metalheads itching for more.
With a quick crossover, Dethklok descended upon the stage as the lights dimmed, with metalheads set for a night of unparalleled brutality, humour and musical prowess. Dethklok – known for their adult animated series Metalocalypse – is Brendon Small’s brainchild brought to stage. With the performing band cloaked in shadows, the primary focus was upon the fictional characters of Dethklok which encompassed the giant screen behind them.

Playing songs such as "Murmaider," "Thunderhorse," and "Bloodlines" with interludes featuring in-universe character Facebones put the band’s tongue-in-cheek humour on full display. The band’s interaction with their fictional manager, Charles Foster Offdensen, added an extra layer of comedic brilliance to the show. As the set reached its conclusion, Dethklok left the stage to thunderous applause and a sea of satisfied metalheads – many adorned with corpse paint, eagerly craving for more.
Last but not least to grace the stage of the Forum was BABYMETAL. Hailing from Japan, the trio combine J-Pop and heavy metal into an image which took the world by storm – and consequently delivered a performance that was equal parts adorable and ferocious.
The Kami band, BABYMETAL’s backing band, provided the sonic backdrop for Su-metal, Moametal and recent addition Momometal's performances. Their tight, precise, and technically impressive instrumentation laid the foundation for the band’s unique sound.

One of the highlights of the evening was the choreography and stage production. BABYMETAL’s live shows are known for their elaborate and synchronized dance routines, and this concert was no exception. The contrast between their adorable, almost theatrical moves and the crushing metal riffs create a visual spectacle that is mesmerizing to watch.
The setlist featured a mix of songs from their diverse discography, ranging from catchy pop-metal anthems like "Gimme Chocolate!!" to more progressive collaborations such as "Distortion" featuring Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy, and "METALI!!" featuring Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.

The trio’s interaction with the audience was heartwarming. They expressed their gratitude in English and engaged with the crowd despite the language barrier. The band’s message of unity and positivity resonated with fans, creating a sense of camaraderie throughout the concert.
All good things come to an end as BABYMETAL closed their set with "Road of Resistance," leaving the venue with deafening cheers and chants for more.
BABYMETAL’s performance in Vancouver was a testament to the band’s ability to blend seemingly disparate musical genres into a cohesive and entertaining performance. Whether you’re a fan of J-Pop, metal, or just appreciate live music as a whole, BABYMETAL’s concert is a unique and captivating experience that transcends boundaries and leaves a lasting impression.

All That Remains – Antifragile
There are a handful of bands that I absolutely cannot stand, and for the longest time, metalcore band All That Remains was on that list. They still kind of are, but truth be told, I’ve kind of forgot about them. Maybe that’s because they haven’t released an album in almost seven years (and that’s because their former lead guitarist passed away), or because vocalist and frontman Phil LaBonte didn’t turn out to be the worst Trump supporter we’ve seen in the rock and metal scenes (Aaron Lewis and Ronnie Radke take that cake by far), but even at their core, they weren’t necessarily “bad.” All That Remains have suffered from being bland and forgettable, especially in terms of a 00s metalcore band. They’re one of those bands that make the album over and over again, but instead of putting small tweaks into their sound that change things from album to album, they stay stagnant and don’t do anything different. Their diehard fans love it, but most casual listeners don’t care.
If they are a band I can’t stand, and they’ve always been a relatively boring and generic band, why am I talking about them now? Well, their new album Antifragile, is their first in seven years, and it’s their first album to feature lead guitarist Jason Richardson. The latter fact is what piqued my interest, because Richardson is one of my favorite guitarists in the metalcore and djent scenes. Whether it’s his work with Chelsea Grin about a decade ago (where he featured on their best album and they were actually interesting for a little while), Born Of Osiris, and his solo work. He’s an incredibly inventive and talented guitarist, so I was curious about what he would bring to All That Remains, of all bands. Honestly, he adds quite a bit, because if there’s one reason to listen to this album, it’s for him. I’ll be damned if the guitarwork isn’t the best thing here. There are tons of tasty guitar riffs and solos here, especially with a 00s melodic metalcore sound. Richardson nails that sound quite well, and even the breakdowns are pretty gnarly a lot of the time.
Even Phil LaBonte isn’t half bad, and that’s surprising for me to say, because he was always kind of bland and uninteresting. He has a decent voice, both whether it’s in terms of his singing or screaming, but he pulls it off okay here. I think another big reason why this album doesn’t irritate me is that LaBonte doesn’t bring his politics into it. I remember he was a full blown Trumper in the 2016 election, but we haven’t heard him spout any bad takes, or say anything bigoted or awful in recent years, so it was almost like they disappeared from the spotlight. I’m sure he still feels that way, as he does lurk in the alt-right sphere, but you wouldn’t be none the wiser if you were discovering this band for the first time, or casually listening to this album. The lyrics on this thing are its weakest part, because they’re pretty bland, uninteresting, and forgettable. They’re your average hard-rock and metalcore lyrics that don’t say anything of importance, but they’re not outright awful or offensive. They’re not Aaron Lewis bad, but they’re just kind of there. This is the kind of album that I listen to for the sound, versus the lyrics, but this is a pretty solid album, only if you look at certain elements. The vocals and lyrics aren’t anything amazing, but the instrumentation kind of makes up for that, for better or worse. This album won’t do much for you if you’re not a fan of these guys already, or you don’t like metalcore, but if you enjoy this you enjoy this type of music, you might get a kick out of this one. It’s a bit disappointing that they don’t take any risks here, considering it’s their first album in seven years, but maybe they’ll do more on their next album. Hopefully they’ll get a more consistent schedule, now that Richardson is in the fold, and they’ll take more risks, instead of keeping it real safe, like they did with this one. I like this album, but it’s a bit too predictable for its own good.

PLEASEEEEE I NEED ROOMMATE!SIMON TO DISCOVER OTHER NEW THINGS ABOUT HIS ROOMIE
you knew simon would rarely be home due to his job. he had told you this when he first moved in, and you didn't mind it. it was easy to fall into a routine with him when he was home.
however, since simon wasn't around often he didn't really get a glimpse into your personal routine, a routine that didn't involve him. he only saw who you were when he was around: quiet, a bookworm considering the amount of books that littered the coffee table, and kind (unless you are driving apparently). you were never loud, always keeping the telly at a quiet or reasonable volume and you never raised your voice. you cleaned up after yourself, and kept your space tidy.
so it took him by surprise when he sauntered down the hallway towards your shared flat, returning from an op, and all he could hear was the aggressive sound of a double bass and the growling voice of a man. truthfully he was surprised the light fixtures in the hall weren't falling from the ceiling.
when he approached the door, simon hesitated.
there's no way that music was yours...was it?
you were so sweet, so soft. yes, you did scream at shitty drivers, threatening their lives and carelessly flipping them off, but besides that you were an angel.
but simon had to admit that maybe he was wrong.
putting the key in, and turning it, he slid the door open, the music pushing passed him and escaping out into the hallway before he quickly shut the door to keep it inside.
and there you were, spread out on the couch, one leg stretched out while the other was bent up towards your chest. your hair was messy, loose and hanging over the armrest, some strands tickling the apples of your cheeks.
simon couldn't believe his eyes (nor his ears, but his ear drums had long since shriveled up and ceased to exist).
how the fuck were you sound asleep with this music pounding against the walls of the flat?
honestly, he had to admit the song was quite good.
he approaches you, not being mindful of his boots hitting the wood flooring because there's no way you'd hear him over the intense guitar and angry vocals of the music. simon rests a hand on your shoulder, leaning in and shaking you gently.
your lashes flutter open in a way that has his heart hammering in his chest faster...or is that the double bass that seems to be getting louder?
