Born on this day: outrageous sewer-mouthed American glitter-punk chanteuse, transgender trailblazer, cult icon, filth elder and the Queen Mutha of us all – Miss Jayne County (13 July 1947)! Auntie Jayne’s career is like a defiant one-woman assault on good taste. In the seventies, backed by her band The Electric Chairs, County (then billed as Wayne) was the undisputed drag queen of choice for hardened punks on both sides of the Atlantic, vomiting up ultra-raunchy diatribes like “Fuck Off” and “Cream in My Jeans”. After the band split, County relocated to relative obscurity in Berlin before transitioning and re-emerging with a solo career as self-made woman Jayne. In addition to music, County is a charismatic occasional screen presence in underground queer cinema (like Jubilee (1978) by Derek Jarman and City of Lost Souls (1983) by Rosa von Praunheim). All punk fans know “Fuck Off” but other Jayne-ified tracks to investigate include “Bad in Bed”, “Toilet Love”, “Mean Motherfucking Man,” “I’m in Love with Dusty Springfield” (County’s valentine to an early hairstyle role model) and the anthemic “Everyone’s an Asshole but Me”. Her autobiography Man Enough to Be a Woman is essential reading. Pictured: photo of County performing at The Underworld in Camden Town, London in 2005 by me! Read my tell-all 1995 interview with County here.

Nancy Spungen and Johnny Rotten
Photo Nancy Spungen and Johnny Rotten at Ivanhoe, Manchester Road, Huddersfield, 1977.
photo history:
It was 1977, I had just finished filming Derek Jarman’s ‘Jubilee’ when I decided to visit an old friend of mine – Rae Spencer-Cullen – in New York. In addition to acting I also used to write articles for the glossy punk magazine “Delux” edited by Willy Daly and Duncan Fallowell. Upon mentioning I was off to New York, Duncan exclaimed, “Why don’t you try and get an interview with Andy Warhol for the magazine?”
I arrived in New York and rang ‘The Factory’. I was immediately invited down to meet Warhol as he was very interested to find out about Jubilee and the Punk movement in England. During the course of our meeting, he asked me if I knew the Sex Pistols, and if so, whether I could get an interview with them for his magazine ‘Interview’.
Arriving back in England a few weeks later, I contacted Malcolm McClaren asking if it would be possible to interview the Band. He said it was fine, but I had better get a move on as they were off on tour to America in a few days and were about to play their last gig in the UK at Ivanhoe’s in Huddersfield. They were playing a matinee and evening show as part of a benefit for families of striking firemen, the gig was to take place on Christmas Day 1977. At this time the location of any gigs the Pistols played were kept secret until the very last minute, in order to avoid trouble and cancellation.
I drove up to Huddersfield on Christmas morning and witnessed an electrifying concert. I spent a lot of time backstage where several of these pictures were taken. The band were incorrigible, Nancy Spungen stood behind me trying to set light to my hair – it was Johnny Rotten who finally stopped her. Sid Vicious was completely out of it, along with the other members of the band, excluding Rotten. The band poured beer in my tape recorder, which virtually stopped it from working and referred to Andy Warhol the whole way through as ‘Andy Arsehole’. Remarkably, I did manage to complete the interview but, unsurprisingly perhaps, Warhol decided not to use it. I sold it to Heathcote Williams for his magazine ‘It’.
Huddersfield was the last concert that the Sex Pistols played in England. In February 1978 Rotten left the band and within a year both Nancy Spungen and Sid Vicious were dead.
In 2008 the remaining Sex Pistols reformed and played a concert at the Brixton Academy.
Photographs taken by Jenny at the Concert were shown at the Rock Shutter Exhibition – ‘Best 500 Rock and Roll Photographs’ in Las Vegas, USA and prints of these are now highly collectable.

I decided recently to make a video for my YouTube channel about Derek Jarman's book Chroma, which has been a big influence on me as a writer and which has become even more so since I moved into doing more visual art.
As part of the process of making the video I want to paint a portrait of Jarman, based on Howard Sooley's photo of him as used on the cover of my edition of Chroma. These are the stages of my progress on that so far: a preparatory black and white drawing, then a colour drawing, and now a study in acrylic on canvas board, which I'm partway through.

Dear Peppertaemint,
I sort of think of you as an expert when it comes to K-Pop, media literacy and topics that deal with queer themes, given your writings on Taemin's work for example. I hope my inquiry won't be considered a waste of time because I know you don't deal with silliness in your inbox, but I will try my luck.
I will admit that I keep up a bit with the BTS members, albeit scarcely. I happened to read on twitter (known as X now) that through his artistic expression, Taehyung is either indicating he is queer or perhaps a suporter (an ally just like Valentina) of the community. All that is supposedly apparent in his first solo music video, with references to queer cinema or the clothes he's wearing for a photoshoot. Of course, this is not the first time this has been speculated in online circles. I'll post a link at the end of this message so you could get an idea of what I'm trying to explain.
What I would wish for is a more unbiased opinion from someone with vast knowledge and a cultural background and who doesn't feel the need to prove anything about their bias. At least I think he's not your bias. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm looking forward to your response. As always 🩷
Sincerely
Lady A. Assante

Hello Lady A. Assante,
Despite there being a high probability that this ask is a put-on, I’m going to take it at face value and reply in earnest.
I looked at the link you sent, which was a tweet of a Russian video purporting to tie the films Velvet Goldmine (1998) and Jubilee (1978) to Taehyung’s recent MV and, seemingly, his identity. I can’t read the Russian blocks of text in the video, but I can see the split-screen shots comparing Tae to characters in Velvet Goldmine. I can also see that Taehyung appears to wear a shirt of the film Jubilee in a promotional photo.
Tumblr media
Now, I’m old enough to have been around when Velvet Goldmine came out; it’s a film about sexuality and aesthetics in the glam rock era, and it not-so-subtlety tells, at least in part, a take on the long time rumour of David Bowie and Mick Jagger’s liaison as lovers during glam rock days. In all honesty, I cannot see how this film in any way, shape, or form, has any relation to Taehyung’s “Love Me Again” MV beyond perhaps they both involve sequinned outfits.
“Love Me Again” is a slightly moody, barebones MV of Taehyung singing in a Spanish cave surrounded by retro items. His hair is a golden mess, while his clothes are cheap sequin getups with golden chains around his neck. Tae is moody in his MV, but he’s no glam rocker. He’s a crooner lost in time and confused. He ends the MV practically disgruntled. For me, the through line of the exotic setting, the props and the styling doesn’t quite come through. So, there wasn’t a lot for me to take away from Taehyung’s MV, but when all his MVs are released, I will watch them in order and share my thoughts. Again, I don’t see any meaningful relation between these two works. And certainly I don’t see anything overtly queer about Taehyung’s MV. If someone wants to come with concrete examples of “he said X” or “he did X” or “he wore X,” then I can consider such things.
And about his clothes: Derek Jarman was an important gay rights activist in the UK. But his activism was, more generally, in the 1980s onward, and focused on certain laws that effected education in the UK as well as raising awareness of the AIDS epidemic. These are very important works, especially to me living in Britain as a queer person. However, the film Jubilee is not about that work. It’s a punk film in response to the Queen’s Jubilee in 1977, and it presents a dystopian future of monarchical Britain and features some of the best punk bands of the time, including The Slits and Adam and the Ants. That shirt is about the punk movement - an important movement in Britain to be sure, but it isn’t centred on queerness.
My advice to Kpop fans looking for queerness in Kpop is to start with those who are doing concrete things in the genre: Holland and OnlyOneOf are a great place to start. Then you can look at Taemin, Key and SHINee as a whole, and reach out from there. SHINee’s “My Identity” from the album Hard (2023) was played at Seoul pride this year. I’d really recommend having a listen. And before a critical interloper writes in to say that everything queer must be cryptically coded because SK isn’t safe for LGBT+; I’m very aware of the rights people are lacking in SK. However, there are levels to meanings in art, and every artist has their own comfort zone when it comes to what they wish to share, and what they wish to be “unlock-able,” and what they wish to keep firmly for themselves. What I don’t think is helpful is conspiracy-level theories about art being queer-coded. That’s because art is already meant to interact with its audience; what a piece of art means to you is what is the most important. If you find something that speaks to your queer side in Taehyung’s work, than for you, that’s what his work is. That doesn’t mean his identity matches yours. There’s no need for that. That’s the beauty of art.
As a postscript, this shot here is exactly what reminds me of Key’s solo work: spooky retro style. That’s Key’s signature, which has been a personal extension of certain works in SHINee’s oeuvre (like “Married to the Music”). What remains unclear for me is what this union of elements signifies for Taehyung.

Derek Jarman's sketchbook during the making of Edward II (1991)
How did Jarman make the sketchbook? Jarman converted an expensive Italian photo album into a dynamic scrapbook, annotated filming script and notebook. He painted over the leather cover in a wash of gold and added a luminous sticker from an OutRage! campaign, saying ‘It’s cool to be queer’. The same stickers were used by film extras to deface Cliff Richard’s white Rolls-Royce, while he rehearsed in the next-door studio. Jarman pasted tabloid articles about the story into the sketchbook, noting that Cliff was ‘looking like an old conker’. What does the sketchbook contain? Jarman’s personal experiences are reflected, poignantly and playfully, in these pages. In 1986, he met Keith Collins and was diagnosed as HIV positive, and he moved to Prospect Cottage in Dungeness the following year. The sketchbook includes items such as a snare left by a hunter in Prospect Cottage garden, a business card for Derek from Keith, a ticket for a Celtic v. Rangers football match and a valentine’s card. Jarman became passionately involved in resisting Clause 28, the section of the 1988 Local Government Act that prohibited the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. This sketchbook contains a letter from Bow Street Police releasing Jarman after he was arrested for taking part in an OutRage! protest. Some notes also reveal that, at times, Jarman was ‘too ill to film’ because of AIDS-related infections. There are story-boards and sketches for scenes, produced by Christopher Hobbs and annotated by Jarman. You can also see Jarman’s key changes and cuts to Marlowe’s play. Most strikingly, Jarman has altered Isabella’s line, ‘Is not that strange’, replacing the word ‘strange’ with ‘Queer’. Jarman keeps souvenirs from the film set ‒ a letter on House of Commons paper demanding Gaveston’s banishment and signed by the cast members; photos of himself and the actors; the invitation to the cast party; and a piece of the metal foil used by cameramen to mask the lights. The sketchbook is an ever-shifting place for planning and inspiration, and a fascinating reflection on the making of the film.

something you’re proud of yourself for?
- being alive lmao. other than that i think it might be the sChOLaRsHiP (i don't know what to call since it does get me a disconut for the tuition fees but not for studying abroad 💀) and prizes i've achieved. not really proud of them but at least i don't have to worry when my relatives ask about my education.
favorite books?
- i'm terrible at choosing so here are some of them: all quiet on the western front; carmen; thương nhớ mười hai; da vinci code; từ gác khuê văn đến quán trung tân; beyond band of brothers; munich: the edge of war and probably odyssey, but i haven't finish the book yet so we'll see.
have you read any of easy company’s books? if so, which ones were your favorite?
- i've read ambrose's and winters' book, but the misinformation was laying everywhere in the book, so i totally prefer winters' "beyond band of brothers" over ambrose'.
when did you join the hbo war fandom? what was the first show you watched?
- i think i first heard about band of brothers at 9, and started watching the show at 10. band of brothers is obviously the first show i watched, and from this show i discovwred about the pacific and generation kill.
something that makes your heart happy when thinking about it?
- skinny sisk. if a bit more serious then it's probably this whole fandom (ily all so much 🥹🫶💖).

- i can't decide on my favorite actor/actress so far, but i'm mostly interested in anthony boyle's role as harry crosby in masters of the air now, so i'll go with that.
do you make content for any fandoms, if so; what sort of content?
- SHITPOSTS 😭😭
favorite hbo war character and your favorite moment with them?
- obviously it's skinny sisk and i love every scene he is in 😋 lmao i remember there was a time when i got shipped with a boy in my class and my non-hbo war fan bestfriend literally yelled i got a boyfriend and he's skinny sisk 😭😭😭
random fact your mutuals/followers don’t know about you?
- i can play the piano, not too much tho 💀
favorite quote/s that you wish to share with others?
- my favorite one so far was "are you from the 1940s or what?". said by my friend to me one random day.

- i'm too ashamed to publish my works anywhere but yes, if you don't mind reading cringy ass fanfics.
any nicknames you like?
- duck, because my viet name rhymes with it and my classmates & online friends call me duck more frequent than my real name so yeah.
list some people you love to see around on tumblr!
- literally every mutuals i have and people i follow, especially @mylastresortiswriting @lamialamia @murphyism @fkmylif3 @blvestxr @onehelluvamarine and @executethyself35.

Week 15 - Final Blog Post Yay!
No way we made it to the final week....
So.. Winter break.... 😃
Here are some ofmy answers to the questions on the slide, and for organization I will add this here (if they were already answered below, I did not add them).
List all the things you need in order to realize it
there are a lot of twine tutorials online on youtube, so that will be my main source.
Testing things out! I won't know if things will work or not unless I keep experimenting so that is a part of the process (of course)
More for the future, but twine has this thing that if you use fonts from your device, they wont show the same even after uploading? I realized this after I showed my itch.io twine link and it didn't show my original font that I had.
What do you plan to bring in?
Complete visual novel game/experience, that includes media such as images, audio.....
Instead of bringing a TV, I shall test on the projector, as a second monitor
A second bluetooth keyboard to use for the game, because my laptop shall be showing video tapes of myself (i will compose this as one singular video on loop).
here is a sketch of a final prototype
Tumblr media
WHAT IS THE PLAN.....?
In order to create a FULL experience prototype, i still need to...
learn more twine! learn how to do more with images, fonts, sounds, videos, gifs....
attach to a bigger screen, in this case a TV to get that feel
watch the media i got from the final crit
make tiny changes to the narrative, nothing extreme, i just want to rethink the idea of the void based on the feedback i got from the final crit.
Weekly Deadlines (first day of class jan 22nd)
Quick note, some of the later dates are not as detailed because it truly all depends on what i am able to accomplish on the previous dates, for example if i can't finish one task, it most onto the next deadline.
December 15
test on TV just for the feel (quick)
take notes on current prototype, see what i want to change (thinking about pictures/videos here)
watch first episode of Archive 81, take notes
December 22
watch twine tutorials based on my notes and changes (focused more on audio/picture/ video)
watch Blue (film) by Derek Jarman, take notes
start collecting old videos of myself, making a collection and compose into one video (start looking on facebook and google photos...look at video tapes)
mess around on twine based on the notes
keep working to reach mostly a finish product to reflect on for next week, aka messing around on twine
January 5
checkpoint! see where i am at, what still needs to be done, stuff like that....
January 12
have the collection of videos finished, ready to go!
the twine should be done by this time as well, based on reflection of prortotype from the week before, make those changes.
January 19
organize and have everything ready for Jan 22nd! making sure that everything works
Okay that's all for now <33333333

VOID Share 'Fables From a Post-Truth Era' Video
UK avantgarde metal pioneers VOID have revealed the official video from their single “Fables From a Post-Truth Era“. The song is taken from the band’s latest album, “Jadjow“, released by Brucia Records in December 2023. Watch “Fables From a Post-Truth Era” HERE. The concept for the video, entirely created by Matt Jarman, stemmed from a dream, a photo of an actual derelict playground in Bulgaria…

In Memoriam: pioneering scene-maker of early UK punk, a muse to Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren as well as filmmaker Derek Jarman, and the original one-woman Sex Pistol Jordan (née Pamela Rooke, 23 June 1955 - 3 April 2022) died on this day two years ago. If the 1970s London punk subculture had an “It girl”, it was Jordan. Her confrontational sense of style and intimidating demeanour made Jordan a natural employee selling kinky latex bondage wear at Westwood and McLaren’s outré SEX boutique on London’s King Road in 1975. As Jon Savage recalls in his definitive 1991 punk history England’s Dreaming, it was a perfect fit. “(Jordan) was a living advertisement for the new shop, having turned her own body into an art object.” I treasure my sole fleeting encounter with her in 2012 at the book launch party for Punk’s Dead by Simon Barker. Jordan was holding court, surrounded by admirers, in front of one of Barker’s portraits of her. I approached and she graciously autographed a postcard for me. To do it, Jordan turned me around and wrote it against my back, gripping my shoulder with her free hand – which melted my punk heart! Jordan was truly a woman and a half. Fun fact: a besotted John Waters admitted he used to keep a photo of Jordan pinned to the bulletin board above his writing desk for inspiration.

Experimented with using a tracing of the Howard Sooley Jarman photo from the cover of Chroma as the basis for a drawing, didn't realise that going over the back of the tracing paper would have the unexpected (but very welcome!) side effect of etching it into the cover of the notebook I was resting on!
