KI NO BI Japanese Gin Cocktail Flight at @fitzgeralds_dc A Cherry Blossom celebration of artisanal Japanese Gins. The Kyoto Distillery is the first in Japan to be solely dedicated to making artisanal Gin. KI NO BI Gin is made using 11 botanicals sourced in its majority from the Kyoto Prefecture were the distillery is located. Another unique regional ingredient only available in Kyoto is found in its underground water source. Fushimi Spring water is renowned for its purity, softness, and mellow flavor. KI NO BI and KI NO BI TEA, the first two gins in the flight, were both elegantly smooth with classic juniper and citrus aromatics and flavors. The flagship KI NO BI is slightly fresher in its aromatics and more Yuzu forward in the palate. KI NO BI TEA delivers the similar freshness and citrusy quality, adding a layer of savory-fruity sweetness to its flavor profile. The third glass on the flight, KI NO BI Edition G, a rare and delicious treat. Edition G was aged in oak barriques sourced from the Argonne forests in Northeastern France near the Belgium border. The barrels had been previously used to mature Henri Giraud quality Champagnes in Marne, Champagne. Only 1,700 bottles of KI NO BI Edition G gin were produced to be distributed in 20 markets worldwide. A truly unique sensorial experience. The new Sui Gin sees Suntory aim their sights on a quite specific niche in the gin market - a light, citrusy gin that is specifically meant to be mixed in highballs, and paired with food. The latest spirit from Beam Suntory has 8 traditional gin botanicals and 3 Japanese botanicals in it - Yuzu, Ginger and Green Tea. Neat, the gin is quite light and citrusy, with the yuzu and juniper the dominant flavours, followed by a hint of spice from the ginger. It’s definitely a gin made for lighter mixers or drinks - it’ll probably be drowned out in a Negroni, and even with tonic, it might need a higher measure to stand out more. Heck, I’d say it was made specifically for highballs with soda, like the usual Japanese chuhais and so on. The launch at Miyako Izakaya served us a range of Sui Gin highballs, from a Gin and Soda to a Gin Sonic, and some paired with yuzu, ginger and pandan/kalamansi. And they all went really well with the food we had there, including sashimi, yakitori, and an awesome bowl of livers that almost tasted like pate (the yuzu in the gin cuts through the heaviness of the liver perfectly). Happy National Gin and Tonic Day!! Another year, another tea infused gin. This year I’m drinking @suntory_rokugin from Japan. It’s distilled with unique Japanese botanicals, including Sencha and Gyokuro teas. It’s very smooth and could be sipped alone, but I like the quinine bite that tonic brings back into the equation. A friend got me hooked on the light tonic water from @fevertree_usa , and it’s definitely the way to go with more delicate gins. Regular tonic water has so much sugar that it tends to overpower gins with a subtler flavour profile. I highly recommend picking up some light tonic water if you’re an adventurous gin drinker.
