🌊 So what's the deal with Mizorogi Hokuto and the Omizu-sama religion?
"Does the water taste delicious?"
Based on my theory that the names in Mononoke Karakasa have metaphorical meanings which may predict their respective plotlines and motivations, Let's break down his Mizorogi's full name character by character.
⭐️北斗(Hokuto) - The Big Dipper
In Japanese culture, the Big Dipper, a.k.a. Ursa Major has two major deities:
妙見 (Myōken) - A Buddhist deity and guardian of horses. Heals eyes diseased. Considered by many to be a bodhisattva because of his compassion, yet is depicted as a sword-bearing warrior.
天御中主 (Ame-no-Minakanushi) - A Shinto deity. The first, or one of the first deities that manifested when heaven and earth came into existence.
The lore drop of the hexagram paradigm introduces the medicine seller headquarters –Jyu-Shoku– existing between the human realm (earth) and Shuuga –the collected/search for self– which exists both everywhere and nowhere (heavens). So I'm pretty sure Shinto deity is the namesake of this water priest character.
🚰溝 (Mizo) - Ditch/Gutter/Trench
Interesting - so the theme of controlling the flow of water is already embedded into his name.
📣呂(Ro) - Bass Range of Japanese Instruments
This is a bit of a stretch, but would the sound of rainfall forming ripples upon the surface of water be considered musical? Or perhaps the interpretation here is that water ripples when a bass note rumbles through it. Basically, the baritone sound of his sermons controlling the women's desires, symbolized by water.
🪣木(Gi/Ki) - Wood
According to 五行 (Go-Gyo), the relationship between the five primordial elements, wood is nourished by water. Another interpretation: wood depletes water. Coincidentally, the buckets that draw water from the well, as well as the laquered triangular bowls which the women drink the well water from, are made of wood.
🧩Putting it all together, I believe Hokuto Mizorogi of the Omizu-sama religion is driven to do the following:
🌧️ Control the women of the ooku, whose "impure" desires are symbolized by natural rainfall
☔️ Shield the women from their "impure" desires with umbrellas (The waterproof repelling qualities are worn off with repeated usage, creating perfect breeding grounds for the Karakasa)
🚰 Diverting the women's desires (gutters/trenches) into the stone well.
📣 Reciting his sermons (bass tone of his voice manipulating water into artificially rippling) to manipulate the women's desires to align with the ooku's needs.
🪣 Having the women drink the purified well water regimented by buckets and cups (wood).
⭐️And this is all in service to a star-touched deity that was firstborn at the manifestation of the heavens and earth - who Tenshi, the shogun, represents.
Stay tuned for my thoughts on his Mizorogi's twin daughters!

so I was thinking
Dame Aylin's skin is like a broken porcelain glued back together with gold (like Kintsugi the Japanese pottery repair method with gold laquer)
Ketheric for 100 years was killing her and bringing her back to life to kill her again.
so what if with every death, she would not be fully repaired to what she was before, her golden blood filled in the cracks, and that's not only an allegory of her body being broken, but also her entire being, her heart and soul, her personhood.
what if when she fought lorroakan, and it was implied that she broke her oath, another crack was to appear on her skin...
and I made myself sad
EDIT: to include Aylin's words about her enslavement and torture

one tidbit i’d like to add about the series finale is there is a technique in japanese pottery (kintsugi, “golden joinery” or kintsukuroi, “golden repair”) where broken pieces are repaired with laquer that is dusted or mixed with gold, the idea being that the imperfections becomes what makes it beautiful and are an important part of the history that should not be ignored or hidden
anyway nate repairing the BELIEVE sign with golden glitter glue was very sweet

Kintsugi
Warnings ➳ fluffy as heck
Pairing ➳ Daryl Dixon x F!reader
Word Count ➳ 392
"Do you ever…" her voice trailed off. Eyes squinting from the sun as the gears turned in her head.
The run was quiet. Rick and Carl walked ahead, lost in their own talk while she slowed to match Daryl. Cardboard covered windows and abandoned cars littered the once bustling shopping district, Walkers either trapped or wandering alone into the day.
"Wha'?" Daryl looked to her, gears still working hard.
She pursed her lips, eyebrows knitted as she stared ahead. Fingers fiddling with her unsheathed knife, her knuckles turned white when she gripped the handle to speak.
"There's this thing," she cleared her throat. "This Japanese art called 'Kintsugi' yeah?"
Eyes forward, he hummed for her to continue. Carl nudged his elbow into his father's side as he laughed.
"So a vase will break, and instead of trying to make it look like it's not broken, they'll use this glue-typa-laquer shit to put it back together."
"A'right," he nodded. Brows furrowed slightly as to what her point was going to be.
"And when it's all glued together, it'll get painted with like, gold or silver or something like that." He glanced at her to see a tensed jaw. "The whole bottom line is embracing all the broken parts rather than hiding them, the end being a stronger piece of pottery with a story behind it."
"Ya been thinkin' a lot," his shoulder bumped into her gently.
She gave a chuckle, soft and shy with her eyes locked to her boots.
"I dunno. It makes me think of us, you know?"
"Us?"
"This group," their eyes met. "All of us, you and me and those two dorks up front and everyone back home."
He couldn't stop the smile that tugged at his lips, head lowering as he let the dark curtain keep him from her view. She didn't have blind optimism - he knew her well enough by now that she was no optimist, but more the outlook she held. That beauty and flourishing could grow from the most ruined and broken, through everything she still believed that.
"Tha' one's m' favourite o' yers," he raised his head to see clouds slowly moving over the blue.
"All of my thoughts are immaculate, Mr. Dixon." She joked, leaning into him.
He gave a soft chuckle, low as he glanced at her.
"Yea', but tha's m' favourite."

Kintsugi is the traditional japanese method of repairing ceramics with laquer and painting the cracks with gold. So every time you break, whatever life throws at you, you learn a lesson, and that’s the gold in you. The harder you fall, the bigger the lesson, and the more you learn, the more it shines like gold in you.
Eventually, you think you’re broken, from fragments, to shards and then a pulverised powder. But please remember you’re also gold now, a franken-gold monster. So glue yourself back together with that precious rare kindness we all need and not toxic resentment.

As @eletaniaaa noted, quite a few members of Anacardiaceae produce a sap/resin that contains urushiol. This compound can produce allergic reactions and allergic dermatitis. Most people are probably aware of the effects of contact with poison ivy, but this chemical is also found in cashew and mango fruits. Not everyone who eats cashews or mangoes experiences an allergic reaction, but if you do, now you know why!
Urushiol is also used to produce lacquer! The word urushiol comes from the Japanese name urushi, which is the name of Toxicodendron vernicifluum, the species of lacquer tree that sap is harvested from. When properly dried urushiol lacquer creates a highly stable and very durable finish which is resistant to abrasions, water, acid, and alkali. Pretty much the only thing that degrades it is UV light and use of this type of laquer as been dated back to 7000 BCE.
Botanical Fact of the Day:
Mangoes, pistachios, sumac, poison ivy, and poison oak are all members of Anacardiaceae, the cashew family.
And cashews too.

Fukukenjaku in the Hokkedo hall, Todaji temple
Nara, Japan
The Fukukenjaku Kannon in the Sangatsu-do of Todai-ji stands 12 feet high. It dates to 746 and is made of dry lacquer. The Kannon is flanked by Nikko (right) and Gakko (left) - see previous page. This form of Kannon has eight arms. The statue bears a rather alarming expression for such a compassionate being.
"Fukukenjaku" means "never empty lasso." It refers to the coil of rope which the Kannon holds in one of his lower arms (viewer's right). Kannon uses this rope to catch straying souls and lead them to salvation. The lasso is found in other multi-armed forms of Kannon as well.

I really like the Imperial furniture set, so I made this room design based on it! It’s a nice space to enjoy a cup of tea and write some poetry. ^^

shogatsu in death note
the winter holiday season is coming up so i thought i'd pull out some of the new years references in death note.
new years (shogatsu) is the big japanese festival. it originally took place according to the lunisolar calendar, but was moved to january 1st during the meiji restoration. it's a family holiday and has many shinto elements. it's a good time for change, refreshment, and casting off of old things.
preparation
year-end cleaning is basically what it sounds like -- it's a major cleaning you do before the new years. it makes sure your household is ready for the new year, because it's better not to have the mess of the old year hanging around. you want to start the year off unburdened. traditionally, it also welcomes kami to a clean house. (lucky ryuk!) traditionally, sachiko would also be preparing osechi (traditional auspicious foods) for new years day, although these days you can also buy these and/or pay for services to prepare the entire array for you. you can also buy some and make others. they're very fiddly and time-consuming to make, so this has to be done in advance.
new years eve
lots of television channels run specials for new years eve. it's not technically part of shogatsu, but it's part of the holidays for many people. sayu is watching death note's version of the red-and-white song contest. this is an nhk program, and it's the more traditional of the two choices. pop singers are divided into two teams, red and white, which compete against one another. it's a really big deal! the fact that misa was invited onto it means she's doing well. here's a colour picture of the stage from the second arc. the sun is there because of kira's influence. otherwise, that's pretty much what the stage looks like in real life.
light is watching the annual mma fight. the sapp-akebono fight was a real and highly anticipated fight between bob sapp and taro akebono. ryuk isn't the only one surprised by the outcome -- akebono was (shockingly!) knocked out in the first round.
new years day
new years day is the big celebration! soichiro missing it is somewhat similar to him missing christmas. sayu is right to be annoyed by this.
you get together and eat osechi -- traditional foods that represent and create various forms of good luck for the upcoming year. they're generally served in special laquered boxes. light would probably want to pay the most attention to the shrimp, which help with a long life, but since that's clearly not going to happen he should perhaps focus on the kuromame, which give you good health. (they also sometimes have gold leaf on them, which is pretty.)
mentioned in the four-panel comics, mochi soup (ozoni) is eaten alongside the osechi. the yagamis would probably be eating kanto style, which is a clear miso with bonito dashi and shoyu. a mirror cake is a common new year's decoration, often placed on a household shinto shrine or a decorated alcove called a toko. (this looks like a toko.) it traditionally has an orange on it. you can eat it eventually, generally during kagami biraki on january 11th.
you would also receive new years cards! light is presumably joking here -- this exchange happens on january 8th, so it is in fact much too late. yamamoto's making this sound like there's some romantic element involved, but you would send them to pretty much anyone (friends, family etc.) as long as no one in their household has died that year.
children are also given otoshidama, gift money in decorated paper envelopes. this is similar to chinese red envelopes. your children can then use this money to buy tiny tvs to kill people with. there are no specific rules, but ¥5,000, or $50, would be somewhat standard (per envelope) for a high school student like light. anyway, those are some elements of shogatsu! ohba and obata seem to like it, because a lot of things in death note (ex. all of this, the warehouse scene) happen roughly around this time. it's a fun holiday, and a good way to start off the new year!
#death note#i have very rarely seen shogatsu in anime/manga and im willing to bet its because of two things#a) unlikely to move the plot along#b) artists would have to draw all the osechi#i grouped the four panel comics together so tumblr wouldnt resize them in a horrific way dfgdfg but the mirror cake isn't strictly for#the actual day of new years#not sure if the yagamis have a household shrine but they do have a whole kami (ryuk) living there so maybe it would be redundant anyway#(there are also traditional reasons to do the osechi in advance but its physically impossible anyway)#also light & sayu are being ridiculous ftr fhjddnt this is even more silly than if she’d been asking for help w/ everyday cleaning
